Dyeing with fungi, demos are fun. (Plus one plant.)
Tumblr media
The colors are not accurate on the phone and as they are drying they are looking a bit different.

10/08/20 There's a restless energy to this time of year, as the days shorten and the sky remembers rain. Time to harvest, to hoard, to press, to share, to bring every lovely thing in under the roof like part-time dragons. Unfortunately, between hailstorms and the Deerpocalypse, we haven't got much to harvest this year. We will not be cussing at a cider press at 2AM or patiently attempting to reason with that one sarcastic cherry tree that only makes fruit 6 meters above ground. Livestock get to outsmart humans all year long, but harvest is when the plants get their turn.
I kind of miss it. I've taken to peering suspiciously at random leaves, wondering if they'd be really annoying to process.
In that spirit, we picked this velvet-footed pax and dried it to dye cloth with. This species contains cinnamon-coloured atrotomentin, mostly visible on the outside, and purple-grey spiromentin, mostly visible on the inside. Dyeing with it requires fairly precise control over heat and acidity to get only the pigment you want, otherwise you'll end up with cloth the colour of cold lumpy oatmeal.
Of course, that won't happen to me. I definitely won't be outsmarted by a mushroom. That would be absurd.

This time of year (late summer, although it doesn’t feel like it), one of the most commonly seen mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest is this species, Tapinella atrotomentosa. It’s often called the velvet rimroll, and, rather misleadingly, the velvet pax, (which would seem to imply that it’s a Paxillus species - it is not!). Tapinella is, oddly, in the order Boletales. Why is this odd? Because most Boletales have pores on the underside of the cap, not gills!
This species has a soft, velvet like cap, with a dark velvety stipe below, and as a saptrotroph grows exclusively on dead wood - conifer wood, to be specific.
Some foragers are disappointed to learn that this mushroom is considered inedible - it’s very bitter and rather tough. It does have one very cool use, though: dye! Here are some sites that show what Tapinella atrotomentosa dyes can look like, with different mordants (generally dark purples):

Velvet rollrim (Tapinella atrotomentosa)
This is a rare find this far south in the UK, although common up in Scotland (as well as the rest of Northern Europe, the US, and Canada) - from a distance, I thought I’d somehow stumbled across wild king oysters. This fungus is easily recognised up close by wavy, in rolled cap and velvety stem.

Oh lawd we dyeing. Cooked 85g dried Tapinella atrotomentosa for about an hour from 38-41°c prior to straining and dumping the skein into the dyebath.

The skein is now soaking.

Tapinella atrotomentosa, also known as the velvet-footed pax! (Due to the velvety texture of the stalk)
Although it has gills, the velvet-foot is a gilled bolete, quite a rare find as there aren’t many gilled bolete species!
Found this one in Macon County, North Carolina and it has been one of my favorite finds ever, so decided to kick off this page with this one.

Some of the oldest mushroom pics in my drafts, from very early in the summer - there's brittle gills, two different kinds of Amanita, a Lactifluus volemus and a baby Tapinella atrotomentosa (top right)
