Úgði /ʏːðɪ/

noun, feminine, plurale tantum

This Kolic word means "Winter." As the plurale tantum tag implies, it can only exist in the plural — so even if you're talking about a single winter, you use the plural form.

Etymology

from úgða (darkness) — plural úgði.

I was twofold inspired by Czech when making this word — firstly, our word for winter is also a word that means another extremely commonly said thing (zima means both "winter" and "cold," like, as a noun). So I decided to make the Kolic word for winter refer to the long nights they experience, as Kól lies a little behind the arctic circle. The second stroke of inspiration is in making it plurale tantum, since Czech also has these words and it just. made sense in this case. After all, winter isn't just "the darkness," but rather notable for its many significant darknesses. Hence úgði.
