Eurovision 2002: The Interval Act and Other Performances

It may be Christmas, but this blog does not stop! Here are some topless Estonian men self-flagellating with viht. Happy Christmas!

Yes, it's interval act time, and if there's one thing that a small stage is going to inhibit it's the intervals act. To squeeze that many performers into a small space, you have to leave the drummers off to one side. It's entitled 'Rebirth' and is performed by dance group Runo along with the ETV Children's Choir. It's cut from the same cloth as several previous interval acts - host country culture portrayed through the medium of modern dance along with some rhythmic music composed for the occasion.

It's not particularly memorable - in fact the English Wikipedia page for the contest doesn't even mention it, though it does have the memorable sauna related scene above which I'm sure we can all enjoy.

Leading off is a shortened reprise of last year's winning song by the artists Tanal Pader and Dave Benton, although there's no sign of 2XL. I hope they're there in the background somewhere. There's no messing about at the start of this year, there's relatively little preamble before launching directly into the contest.

Like in 1999, there's a mid-running order break for ads including what is probably the single most memorable additional musical number of the show. The two hosts star in what appears to be a little skit but turns into a full musical number. It makes the most of Annely Peebo's mezzo-soprano voice for a song poking gentle fun at just how many songs at Eurovision are about love. Marko joins in to demonstrate that he too can sing to the applause of the crowd.

A short pre-recorded video accompanies it and frankly, for a mid-running order break, this is as about as perfect as it gets. The song A Little Story in Music feels like a musical aside from a classic era Hollywood or Broadway musical, it's performed beautifully and it only lasts a couple of minutes. It's completely perfect and I like it so much I've linked it below.

The seasons are shifting already. Pine needles are dropping, and the air is indeed changing. East Texas is a subtle lady when the seasons change, but you know if you know how to pay attention.

Christmas w/ Ramshackle

Characters: GN Yueme (yuusona), Grim, Mizuki, trio ghosts

Context: Second year semester, Mizuki brought ingredients to make one of Yueme's food back home. They ended up making 50,000 tamales, so they ended up sharing with the others.

Warning: Strict culinary judgment

It's that time of year, Christmas is around the corner. The first winter, Yueme and Grim arrived at NRC. They couldn't forget the things they had to fend for self-defense, but with Mizuki along, everything was going to be fine. For once, they were able to have a nice family dinner.

As the morning rises, the heart and spade go to visit their friend as they stop on their track.

A unknown delicious smell

Ace and Deuce arrived at the Ramshackle dorm, the smell getting strong as they knocked on the door, greeted by Grim.

"What do you guys want?" (Grim)

"We came to visit Yuu." (Deuce)

"Say Grim, what is that smell? It's strong, and it smells good. Is Yueme and their friend making something?" (Ace)

"Henchman says they are making something for dinner." (Grim)

"Here you go, Yueme." (Mizuki)

Yep, it was indeed busy as there were a lot of ingredients at the table counter and 10 big pots at the stove counter. The trio ghosts also help as they put the "dough" on the "giant leaf" and then the seasoning chicken, but they couldn't help out as the kitchen was too warm for them. To Ace and Deuce, they have no idea what they were making, but they could tell their friend was in a happy mood as they were finishing with the last batch.

"Aannd~ That should be the last one." As Yueme put the last one inside the big pot.

"Yueme, what is it your making?" (Ace)

"Oh! It's something that I used to eat back to my original world. It's called tamales, a mesoamerican tradition dish. The masa is a dough made of nixtamelized corn, steam with corn husk/banana leaves, either red or green salsa, and for the meat, it can be either chicken or pork." (GN Yueme)

"Wow! Hearing it just makes my mouth water." (Ace)

"By the way, Yueme. Are you and the rest going to finish "all" of that?" (Deuce)

"I might have got a lot of ingredients, but it was worth it. Yueme, we might have to share it with the others as this could be added to the cafeteria menu." (Mizuki)

"Hmm..yes. I don't want to waste all of it. Mizuki, see if we have a wagon to carry out to the Hall of Mirrors." (GN Yueme)

22. Do they like being called pet names? Do they call other people pet names? What’s their go-to?

oh that is extremely context dependent - not a simple yes or no, but a matter of who and when.

If Josie doesnt know you, that is a hard no. People acting overly familiar, or worse, condescening,with pet names drives her up the walls, and being overly familiar with names with Josie is a surefire way to get on her bad side.

For people she knows, its a bit different. She doesnt mind the terms, within reason. She likes shows of affection in much of anyform. September in particular often calls her 'love', which she is very endeared to. I imagine Sept can get pretty into cheesy and cute petnames which Josie is oft endeared too.

In terms of her own usage she does tend towards them towards those she knows. she tends to use 'dear' the most often, especially in terms of friends and the like. she adapts to using love for sept too..... she likes the show of affection, and enjoys Aknowledging her relation to other people.....

23. Stability or novelty?

Oh Novelty for sure. Even if Josephine really tried to settle down into a Simple Life and Expectation of The Mundane, it wouldnt have worked for her. She's endlessly curious, endlessly searching, possessed with a deep need to know. Her greatest joy is when she's discovered something new, or what she's so close to the next breakthrough, or when there's a tanalizing piece of information thats just out of her reach. New, novel things are so neccesary for Josie, she'd choose it over stability every time, even subconciously (this might make things a tad difficult when it comes to being a mother, but still, she is figuring out the balance of work and home.)

29. What recurring dreams do they have?

Josephine tends to have a lot of nightmares, replaying of events from the past, or frequent worries about the future. Moments she's tried to move from the forefront of her mind in the waking tend to rear their ugly heads when sleep comes. Perhaps then she's not too affronted when others come to interupt her dreams...

most commonly tho (nemesis spoilers) she has reoccuring dreams about being back in Beggar's Wake, their among the moor, and endless howling wind, ringing in her ears.

spencer is the canon half - sister of meg that her vengeful ghost spoke about. she was known as joan back then. her first name. — joan idolised meg. her big sister was her hero. so many fairytales talk about wicked step or half sisters, but that was never the case with the masters siblings. from the moment little joan was born, meg became the protective figure with complete ease. the two girls were joined at the hip … until they weren’t. they held hands, they skipped. meg stood up to the bullies and then, when she was old enough, she taught joan how to do it herself. they were partners in crime, never one without the other.

joan’s parents died in a car crash when she was twelve. as a result, their aunt mariem moved in to become their legal guardian. the incident brought the two sisters even closer, having each other’s backs more than they already as. as much as their aunt tried, she wasn’t a natural caregiver. she was there because she felt she owed it to her sister. before meg left for college, she made a promise to joan that once she was finished with her studies, she would come home & they would get their own little apartment together. they would constantly email each other live listings they came across, with a teenage joan printing them onto a pinboard she’d started in her room. something to keep her sister close and give her hope for their future.

joan knew something was wrong with her sister when she missed their thursday night phonecall. meg would never leave her hanging like that. when she left for college, they made a pact; thursday night was their night, no matter what else was going on. she tried to tell her aunt, but her aunt brushed the concerns off. she’s probably just having fun, she’s at college, mariem reassured. she’ll call next week. — she didn’t. it took three weeks of radio silence before a campus administrator called the house to report meg had stopped showing up for class and her car hadn’t moved from where it was parked. meg masters was officially reported missing.

joan did everything she could to find her sister. she even ran away from home, turning up at meg’s college to hand out missing person flyers, asking anybody she could if they’d seen this girl. she refused to leave until the cops made her under aunt mariem’s orders. she wasn’t trying to punish joan; she just didn’t want another niece going missing. unfortunately, at seventeen years old, joan didn’t understand that. she started lashing out at her guardian, accusing her of not caring.

the longer meg was lost, the more joan started to lose herself too. it was easy to fall apart without her big sister around to keep her grounded. she started skipping class / dropped out of school altogether not long after. took up smoking. ran from the cops when they caught her stealing beer. most teenagers go through a rebellion, but joan took it to the next level, spiralling in any way she could. it was as if she was punishing the world for hiding her sister from her. it didn’t help. it certainly didn’t bring meg home. at least it distracted her for a while though or at least, she pretended it did.

meg’s ghost wasn’t lying when she said her sister killed herself. she tried anyway. thirteen months after that first missed call, her sister’s body was found and joan volunteered the identify the body. aunt mariem tried to talk her out of it. the morgue was no place for a nineteen year old girl, but joan insisted. she owed it to her sister to be there for her. and she needed to see it for herself, if she was ever going to believe meg was truly gone. — boy, was that a mistake! traumatised by the sight, joan drank a bottle of vodka and hotwired the neighbour’s car. the same car would later be found at the bottom of a lake. joan drove it in with every intention of sinking with it, but fate had other ideas; somebody pulled her out. provided cpr. they wrapped her in a blanket, provided warm tea. when they asked her name, she told them spencer. when they asked if they could call anyone, she told them no … everybody i love is gone. in a way, joan did die that night and instead, spencer came forward. she ran. when the car was found with all her identification inside, joan spencer masters was presumed dead ands he has, until this day, remained presumed dead.

spencer became obsessed with finding out what happened to her sister. there was no way she obtained those injuries by accident. they were too severe, too brutal. too inhumane. from the moment she ran, spencer swore never to stop until she found out the truth about what her sister really went through. she dug deeper & deeper, then a little deeper. as the years passed, the puzzle began to piece itself together. a witness on campus spoke about seeing black smoke surrounding meg. cctv showed her in places she had no reason to be visiting. police reports, stolen after she broke into the station, described a woman with short blonde hair being the last person seen with a truck driver stabbed to death. none of it made sense at first, but sheer determination pushed spencer on and eventually, the answer became clear … demons.

spencer fell into the hunting life without even meaning to. the deeper she dug, the more beasties she began to stumble across. she learnt how to protect herself, but it wasn’t enough. she wanted to learn how to protect others too. it’s not the path meg would’ve wanted for her, but then … she doubts meg wanted the path she ended up going down either, and she’s not here anymore to tell spencer no. blinded by rage and the thirst for revenge, spencer promised herself she would find the demon that took her sister and make them pay. in the meantime? she’s perfectly fine with taking out any other monsters she comes across. anything to stop what happened to meg happening to someone else.

CHP Şanlıurfa Milletvekili Mahmut Tanal, belediye borçlarına ilişkin Meclis araştırması açılmasını istedi. Tanal, "Belediyelerde çarçur edilen, yandaşlara aktarılan, kişisel servete dönüştürülen her kuruşun hesabı sorulmalıdır. Belediyelerin borç bataklığına sürüklenmesi, belediye kaynaklarının yanlış kullanımı, belediyelerce vatandaşlara kaliteli hizmet için harcanması gereken paraların amaç dışı değerlendirilmesi, belediyelerin toplamda ne kadar borcu olduğu ve bu borçların hangi kalemlerden oluştuğu konusunda TBMM üzerine düşen görevi yerine getirmelidir" dedi.CHP Şanlıurfa Milletvekili Mahmut Tanal, belediyelerin önceki dönem borçlarıyla ilgili araştırma önergesi verdi. Tanal, TBMM Başkanlığı'na sunduğu araştırma önergesinin gerekçesinde şunları kaydetti: "NÜFUSU 100 BİNİ BİLE BULMAYAN İLÇELERDE MİLYONLARCA LİRA BORÇ BIRAKILDI""Cumhur İttifakı çatısı altındaki AKP, MHP ve kayyumlardan devralınan il ve ilçe belediyelerinin borç yükü, halkın parasının nasıl çarçur edildiğini gözler önüne sermektedir. Nüfusu 100 bini bile bulmayan birçok ilçe belediyesinin dahi geride milyonlarca lirayı bulan borç bıraktığı görülmektedir. Kimi il ve ilçelerde kişi başına düşen borç miktarı 10 bin lirayı aşmaktadır.Meclis Araştırması açılması talebimizi birtakım örneklerle gerekçelendirsek: AKP'den CHP'ye geçen Denizli Büyükşehir Belediyesi'nin, 11 milyar 130 milyon 969 bin lira borcu olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. AKP'den CHP'ye geçen Balıkesir Büyükşehir Belediyesi'nin toplam borcunun ise 15 milyar lira düzeyinde olduğu bilgisi, basına yansımıştır.
