I managed to get my brain to hyperfocus on Do House Things today!
There are three gremlins in my head driving. A toddler, a monkey, and an old woman who is secretly a Cougar.
Sometimes I can spin the Wheel Of Focus and come up with something good. (Other times it just spins and spins.)
Today I started with making breakfast, which dirtied dishes. Yesterday I managed to actually wash all of the dishes but by Talos I found like three more glasses in weird places. So I made a nice breakfast and then persuaded myself to wash the dishes from that, and those last few glasses so it could be ALL DONE.
But then! The sweet hyperfocus kicked in hard, and I scrubbed all the petty little things I could find in the kitchen: the top of the tub we keep the big rice bags in, the electric kettle, a cookie jar, etc.
And then I thought I'd get a basket of "kitchen stuff" from off the back porch. Our closed in back porch (mud room?) Is haphazardly loaded with boxes that we didn't have room for, initially. I dug out a plastic basket of the things that had been on top of the cabinets at the old place. Translation? Rarely used items that were dusty and needed a good scrub.
Found my camping dish set. Washed all of those dishes.
Now, when we moved in December, we brought all of our food out and put it on the back porch while we waited for the fridge to be moved. We had hoped it would stay cold enough but it didn't. We did wind up throwing away most of our food. We also know that we missed some container and there was a cache of food spoiling out there, but we could not find it. It was rank.
So I dug through the stacks, pulling out "kitchen things we didn't have space for" and putting them away, stacking up "previous owner/tenant left this behind", and actually organizing the things I wanted to store out there on purpose. All my coolers and picnic sets are now stacked neatly out of the way back there.
And I found a styrofoam cooler in an odd location. It was heavy. So was my heart. It was filled with items from the freezer. Folks, it is now fucking MARCH so you can imagine the absolute horror. I snagged a big garbage bag, put the whole-ass styrofoam cooler into the bag, sealed it up and put it in the garbage can. Grosssss.
But! All my coolers are cleaned out, my cake saver is clean and ready to find a new home, all my camping supplies are actually in the Camp Box, and I no longer have randomly grubby things in the kitchen!
I was able to incorporate the plastic basket and now my vitamins and supplements all have a nice container.
My porch doesn't smell like death and garbage!
Side effect: I had a date tonight. I had to have a little help getting back out of the headspace of CLEAN ALL THE THINGS! Fortunately that worked out ok, and I was able to get into a romantic mood.
But somehow, I've been able to make my house into a Grownup Space, and we are keeping it up that way.
Well. For various definitions of Grown-up space.
