Night, Laughter, and a Sword
Chapter 1
Summary: Tallulah gets a rather rude welcome into this strange world of myths.
Pre TLT
Word count: 952
Warnings: Description of injuries
Random: Thanks so much for supporting this passion of mine! So here is chapter one :)
Next Chapter
Tallulah felt every single shard of glass as it dug into her right shoulder, up and down her arm, and all the way up to her neck. She wished she could cry out in agony, but she had to keep calm. She breathed heavy, she knew there was only one way to survive. So she reached for her sword.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Penelope let out her strange laugh at one of Talluah’s bad dad jokes. Tallulah couldn’t help laughing as well.
“You sound like a goat, my dude!” Tallulah wheezed between giggles of laughter.
Penelope grabbed one of the yeast rolls, “I don’t even understand what that’s supposed to mean!”
Tallulah shrugged with a grin. Her dad walked in with more food.
“I have moose meat! It’s in season!” He announced happily.
Dinners with her family (and Penelope) were always full of surprises. Sometimes food fights would break out over small things. Most dinners were full of snickers and strange questions. You would never know. But this dinner wasn’t going to be like most. And it all started with a strange roar outside. Tallulah glanced out the window and could swear she saw movement.
“Dad, did you hear that?” Tallulah questioned. Her dad had good ears from being a game warden. Surely he did!
He looked at her with confusion, “No, maybe it was just a goose or something.”
Tallulah nodded and kept eating. Until she heard it again.
“That sounded threatening, how about I go look for it?”
“Fine, but bring a weapon! And don’t do anything stupid!”
Tallulah ruffled his hair and grabbed her sword. It wasn’t a typical weapon for your normal Mainer to have. But her dad gave it to her on her 10th birthday, saying it was a gift from her mother. She didn’t know her mother well, but her mother must have known her to give her such a beautiful sword. But now wasn’t the time to marvel over every detail of its blade. She unsheathed it and walked out into the dark.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tallulah already had quite the talent with tracking from growing up in the woods. But her strange ability to see through the dark made her even better. Nighttime just made her feel so much more rejuvenated and powerful to her father’s dismay. It isn’t the best idea to let your daughter out in the woods of Maine, in the middle of the night. But she found ways to escape anyway. She came to a sudden stop, sounds of cracking branches seemed to echo.
“Strange, most creatures would be much quieter than this.” She thought. But she very quickly learned this wasn’t her usual animal. Matter of fact, she found out a second later. A lion, goat, snake mix lunged out of the brush, knocking her to the ground. She grabbed her sword again and attempted to swing at the monster. Her dad had taught her the basics of sword fighting, but the basics weren’t going to work here. The monster easily dodged the attack and swung her into the air with its tail. It all seemed to go in slow motion. She looked up at the stars as she seemed to fling into the inky blackness. Then she felt herself move through the shadows. Reality came crashing back as she burst through the window. The shards stabbed like millions of thorns, making her bleed out. She wasn’t quite sure she could survive those injuries. But she knew she definitely wouldn’t survive if she didn’t attack back. She grabbed her sword and leaped out the window and hoped her power would work. Maybe she could figure out how to teleport again! And to her surprise, it worked! She landed on the back of the mighty beast. It roared at her presence, trying to claw at her. So she used all her strength to pierce the sword through the strange creature. It gave out one more loud growl before collapsing into a pile of dust. Tallulah was breathing fast and heavily. How had she done that?! But that wasn’t the most important thing right now. She ran inside and Penelope rushed to her side.
“It was the Chimera! I saw!” Penelope cried, “I’m so sorry, I should have been a better satyr protector!”
Tallulah looked Pel in the eyes, “Satyr? Like in my storybook?”
She nodded and led her to the table. Her dad looked more shocked and terrified than ever, hugging her close. Eventually, he began to bandage her.
“Dad… Did you know?”
He averted her eyes, “Yes, Lula. I found out after she left what you would be a part of. Pel can explain.”
Tallulah looked at Pel and urged her to share this new information. Her jaw dropped as the satyr told her everything. The monsters she had seen and fought, her powers, her mother. But going to a mysterious mythological camp honestly made Tallulah laugh. This would be so unbelievable if she hadn’t just fought the Chimera.
“You will be going to camp in a few days, but first you need to at least heal up those gnarly scratches.” her father told her, holding her face.
Tallulah felt her eyes beginning to water, “But you need me… You don’t have much more family nearby.”
“Lula, I have the other wardens. Your grandmother too. Don’t worry.” He comforted as tears fell down his cheek, “I know it’s a lot to take in but I just need you to be safe.”
Tallulah slowly nodded and embraced him again. Penelope began to wail.
“Omigosh, it’s so sad to see this!!!”
“You always were emotional, weren’t you.”
Her dad gave a soft smile, “I’m going to miss you.”

Night, Laughter, and a Sword Chapter 4
Summary: Tallulah has a moment with Luke and the stars. And makes a big decision for the good of the children of Nyx.
Pre-TLT
Word count: 1.6k
Warnings: None really, just some fluff and description of a nightmare sort of
Sorry for taking a little while and releasing it randomly! I've been busy
Previous~Next
Tallulah slowly blinked her eyes open. Moonlight shone through the main window and lit up the room. She pushed herself up onto her elbows and took a deep breath. Something made her feel much more calm at night. Something felt freeing about the darkness. Knowing it stretched everywhere and covered everything. Until something lit it up that was. She sat up against the wall and enjoyed the silence. But then she noticed some weird grunting noise. And panicked breathing.
Her eyes drifted around the room, silently laughing at Alex’s weird position, until they landed on Luke. His blanket was kicked off the bed and he was tossing and turning. His forehead was drenched in sweat. He was whispering at something, his hand drifting up to his scar. So Tallulah nimbly tiptoed towards the edge of his bed. Avoiding the campers strewn around the floor. She could see why Luke was so stressed out with his responsibilities. She hadn’t known him for very long, but she had noticed how he was constantly on his feet. Always in charge of sword training. Always attempting to tidy up the cabin, not that it worked. Always worrying about the new kids. She reached him and stopped. Everyone was still sleeping as it was midnight meaning she couldn’t make much noise. So she gently shook him awake. It took a few tries but he eventually looked up at her.
“Tallulah?”
“Yeah, it’s me.”
“Need s’mthig?”
“No, just checking on you. You were having a nightmare or something?”
Luke stretched and sat up, “Yeah. But I’m used to it.”
“You don’t seem used to it…”
He shrugged and traced a finger down his scar, “It’s because of a-um-quest this year…”
Tallulah noticed he obviously didn’t want to talk about it and slowly led him to the window.
“I think you need a distraction.”
“Thanks, LaFlamme. I ‘preciate it.”
She softly smiled and sat down. She could name just about every constellation. They each had a different story. Luke eased down next to her and looked at the stars as well.
“I could never understand this.” He admitted.
“Huh?”
“The patterns in the stars. There’s so many of them! I can’t remember them all.” He answered, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Well, there’s of course the zodiacs. They each represent important parts of myth.”
Luke nodded as she pointed out a couple.
“There’s Andromeda! It’s one of my favorites. She was saved from sacrifice by Perseus!”
“Cassiopeia is there!”
“Centarus is real big! It’s right over there!”
Tallulah kept rambling on and Luke kept intently listening. She didn’t notice how his gaze kept on her. (THAT’S RIGHT READERS! WE GOT A SLOWBURN!)
“They’re all beautiful. Maybe you could tell me their stories later.” Luke whispered.
Tallulah blushed. Not many people understood her love for stars. But they were all so mighty and full of fiery power. Yet they only left a small glow on the Earth. Millions of light-years away.
Luke let out a gasp. Even more light shined through the cabin, waking up all the campers. Tallulah looked up. A purple and white symbol of a star and crescent moon floated above her. Several campers stared in awe. Then it disappeared.
“You’re a child of Nyx…” Luke declared with a sad smile.
Tallulah had no idea what to think or say or do. Her mother had just claimed her. What was she supposed to do now?! Several campers came up to her and congratulated her and announced they were also children of Nyx. Most were ranging in the ages of 9-13. But Tallulah honestly felt bad. Now she was just another camper Luke would have to worry about. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw another Hermes boy (Chris? Connor?) comfort Luke. He was just staring at her with glassy eyes. His fingers running up and down his scar. Alex softly patted her on the back.
“I-I’m sorry.” Tallulah apologized, her voice barely audible.
“It’s not your fault… He just has some issues with his dad…”
Those few words made her form a plan in her mind. Maybe a risky one, but a plan nonetheless. In the morning, she would enact it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I need to talk to Chiron.” Talulah stated at breakfast.
Alex glanced at her, “Not gonna ask why, but you might as well run by what you’re going to say to me.”
“No, you’ll just try to stop me.”
Alex shrugged, “That doesn’t make me feel better but you do you. He’s probably at the big house.”
Tallulah nodded with determination and quickly scarfed down her food. Then she immediately strided off. But she didn’t notice Luke trailing after her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Taylor Lafree is here!” Mr. D called out.
Tallulah bit her tongue, now wasn’t the time for sass. She needed Chiron to accept this request. For the sanity of Luke.
“Ah! Tallulah, what may I do for you?” Chiron bellowed as he made his way over the deck.
“I was claimed last night.”
“Oh! What cabin?”
“Nyx…”
“Ah so no real ca-”
“That’s what I came to talk about.” She cut him off.
She took a deep breath before starting again. Chiron gave her a surprised look, curious as to how she would continue.
“I think we should get a new cabin.” She started slowly, “Since there are plenty of Hypnos and Nyx kids. I can even be a counselor if needed! I just want to lessen the strain on Luke.”
Chiron raised an eyebrow, “That is a very large request. But I see your reasoning.”
Tallulah nodded. Maybe he would hear her out.
“But I believe Luke is handling himself quite well.”
Tallulah grimaced. How could they not see him struggling?! She had been there for 4 days now and she could already tell!
“I don’t wish to be disrespectful but he is only 17. Yet he is supposed to care for like 35 kids?! Also sword training! And normal camper duties?!”
“Well the other counselors-”
“DON’T HAVE TO CARE FOR AS MANY KIDS!”
Chiron sighed, “Alright, Alright. Just because of how many kids there are and because of your insistence I will agree. But you have to help design it. Luke and the other counselors will help train you”
Tallulah grinned and agreed quickly. She walked off satisfied.
“Wow, you care a lot, LaFlamme.”
Tallulah spun around to see Luke leaning against a building.
“Well, I also care about my siblings. They deserve a little bit of privacy. And the ability to stargaze without getting eaten.” She shrugged.
She didn’t want to admit that she cared about him. They were just friends and it was going to stay that way.
Luke handed her a crumpled list, “Here is a list of your new responsibilities. They can be a bit overwhelming at first but you’ll get used to them.”
“Oh please, I rode a moose once!”
“You wh?!– nevermind that has nothing to do with this. How about we tell the other campers about this.”
Tallulah shook her head, she didn’t want a whole lot of attention.But Luke just dragged her back to the cabins and began to pull her up onto a table.
“Attention children of Nyx and Hypnos!” a handful of campers turned their heads to Luke, “I want you to meet your new counselor!”
Silence ensued. Tallulah felt her face burning in embarrassment. But she needed confidence to win them over.
“To help lessen the strain on your favorite counselor, Castellan here, I’ve decided to take over for Nyx and Hypnos kids. I know I’m relatively new to this camp but I am the oldest and I am willing to put in the work. I also am creating this cabin to give you kids a chance to stargaze without becoming a snack for harpies.” She earned a couple giggles from the campers.
Public speaking came quite easily to Tallulah but that gave her more encouragement. After her “speech” of sorts, a smaller girl came up to her. She looked about 11 and had long black braids. There was a fierce look in her eyes, almost like an Ares kid. But also a gaze that gave a sense of knowing.
“Hi, I’m Annabeth. I see Luke has taken to introducing you to the camp.” She started, gesturing to Luke, “I trust that he hasn’t bothered you too much?”
Tallulah rolled her eyes but smiled, “He’s Castellan, always a bit annoying.”
Annabeth shot a sharp glance at Luke and muttered something along the lines of, “Nicknames already?”
Luke’s cheeks turned rosy and he folded his arms, “LaFl-Tallulah! I’ve just made sure she’s not alone!”
“Hey! She has me, Lou, and Mae!” A voice sounded from the tree.
Alex flipped down to the ground with grace, landing with a spiderman pose. Lou-Ann also appeared from behind.
“Mae was working on a Demeter kid at the infirmary so she couldn’t come to our dramatic entrance.” Lou-Ann dramatically sighed.
Tallulah darted her eyes between them all, “So why the sudden group meeting?”
“Well we heard about your brave decision to become a counselor for the Nyx and Hypnos kids!”
“And I just haven’t met you before, even though Luke has been taking care of you.”
“I know, I know… Maybe it was a stupid decision… But something is just telling me I need to do this. I truly want to help these kids.”
“I know you will! I have all the info you need on the Hypnos kids and Nyx kids. They can have some interesting issues of sorts. Like falling asleep anywhere!”
Alex and Lou smirked at each other. Luke seemed extremely eager to help her. But Tallulah would take all the help she could get.

I found out after writing the latest chapter that kicking someone in the shins hurts like, a lot. And when you block a kick with your shins it's called a shin lock. So technically I could have played more into Luke being in a WHOLE lotta pain and probably limping after. Oh well.

Night, Laughter, and a Sword Chapter 3
Summary: Tallulah's first capture the flag game is... eventful. One of my favorite chapters to be honest! And we meet some of the more important characters!
Pre-TLT
Word Count: 2.1k
Warnings: Descriptions of violence
Hope you like it :)))))) ALSO ART BY ME
Previous~Next
Used to her dad’s early schedule, Tallulah woke at dawn. Most of the campers were still snoring in their bunks. She sat up onto her pillow and rubbed her eyes, getting a good look around the cabin. Then she noticed Luke was also up.
“Oh, hey. How’d you sleep?” Luke asked, casting a glance at her.
“Eh, ok. The floor is just so very comfy.” Tallulah answered with a roll of her eyes.
“Don’t worry! I’m sure you’ll be claimed soon. Then you’ll have a cabin of your own. Unless you're a minor god’s kid.”
“I sure hope not, I don’t live down here for the next couple of summers.”
“Yeah, we have a lot of Nyx and Hypnos kids for some reason. They started appearing a whole lot more than the rest. I’m getting tired of dealing with their powers or stopping them from getting eaten by the curfew harpies.”
Tallulah gave him a weird look, “You’re telling me we aren’t allowed out a night because we’ll get eaten by HARPIES?!”
“Exactly! It’s pretty extreme to me. I don’t understand why the gods just don’t care about their-”
A bell rang through the cabins. Tallulah covered her ears with a pillow. It was definitely not as peaceful as the woods back home.
Luke chuckled, “It’s capture the flag day. They make everyone get up early. Better get up before you’re trampled.”
He held his hand out and pulled her up. She definitely didn’t want to get stepped on.
“Talls! Check your hair!” Tallulah heard from a bunk.
Tallulah’s face grew warm as she remembered how much of a mess her hair must have been.
“Hey don’t take it as an insult! I think it’s cute.”, then it was Luke’s turn to blush, “IMEANFINE!!!”
Tallulah shrugged it off and went back to brush through her hair. Alexandria approached her.
“Sorry if you thought I was being mean,” she apologized, “I just didn’t think you’d want to walk out like that.”
“Hey, it’s all good! Just give me a minute.”
Eventually, Tallulah had combed out all the frizz and had tied her hair up with a bandana. Alex gave her a thumbs up and led her out of the cabin.
“So what time is capture the flag?” inquired Tallulah.
Alexandria gave a mischievous grin, “We destroy the enemy at 12:00! Each cabin is assigned to blue or red and the unclaimed are randomized. Go see the paper!”
She led her over to a large poster on one of the signs.
Team Blue
Hermes Cabin
Athena Cabin
Hephaestus Cabin
Demeter Cabin
Team Red
Ares Cabin
Aphrodite Cabin
Apollo Cabin
Dionysus Cabin
“Here, let’s head to breakfast, relax and train for the day, then you’ll be assigned.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Long story short, Tallulah got assigned to red. Penelope directed her to who she would need to meet up with. Her and Alexandria walked towards the armor area to get ready. She just hoped she wouldn’t go too far with her sword.
Alexandria noticed her nervousness, “Have you played capture the flag before?”
Tallulah nodded, “Yeah, but it was a lot more…violent in the woods.”
“Oh really? That’s questionable, we have swords!”
“Well we had nerf guns, swords, and pocket knives. But we didn’t have any armor.”
Alexandria went pale at the last comment. It was sort of strange it was so normal for kids to have weapons now that she thought about it. Alexandria handed her greek armor. It was kind of weird for Tallulah to see. She almost wanted to laugh at how stupid it looked with its feather helmets.
“I know you're new, but we’re still gonna crush you!” Alexandria challenged with a scary smile.
After she walked off, Luke came to check on her.
He adjusted her armor.
“Here, it’s so you’re not in as much pain when you lose!” He smirked.
“Oh, it’s on Castellan!”
Luke raised his eyebrows with a smile, “So I’m getting last name’d now? Well then it’s on, LaFlamme!”
Then she headed off. Eventually she saw her crimson flag and the girl she was supposed to meet.
“Oh, you’re the newbie!” The girl greeted, “I’m Lou-Ann!”
The girl had the beauty of Aphrodite, but the violent gleam in her eye gave her an Ares kid look.
“Don’t worry! I’ve heard about you! You will love this game!”
“I bet I will, can’t wait to destroy the other team!”
Lou-Ann punched her arm, “I like your style!”
A horn sounded out and the demigods took off! But Lou-Ann stopped Tallulah.
“You, me, and Kay are going to guard the flag!”
Tallulah was slightly relieved. She never liked initiating combat. Yet she wasn’t against violence either.
“Get away from here scoundrels! You look like you wear two different shades of black at once! I will make your blood color the ground of this forest!!!” Tallulah was surprised at such violent threats, so she searched for the voice.
Eventually she found a blonde haired girl with a large sword swinging at opponents.
She looked back at Tallulah with a scary look in her eyes, but then it softened, “Sorry, I’m Kay. Kay Thatcher of the Ares cabin.”
Tallulah gulped, “Isn’t maiming and killing not allowed?”
Kay shrugged, “They’re alright! HEY DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!”
The blue warriors tried to inch away before Kay took another blow at them. Then another blonde came through the woods, barely making a sound with her nimble footsteps.
“Come here!”
Tallulah followed her. She had brown and gold eyes and more gold weaved into her hair.
“I’m Mae of the Apollo cabin! Kay might attack you if you catch her in a frenzy just warning you!”
“Oh ok, thanks Mae. I’m Tallulah.”
Mae winked at her, “Stay safe!”
She darted back off with her bow. Kay ran off towards more runners. So Tallulah decided to guard the clearing. She knew she made the right decision as 2 Hermes kids came through.
“Oh, it’s the new girl. Just knock her out, she hasn’t trained.” One whispered way louder than he should have.
This provoked fury in her that she never knew she had. She decided to use the shadows to surprise attack them just to prove she could be scary. It’s kind of terrifying to have the enemy jump out of the woods at you. So as they decided how to attack she snuck into an old burrow. Man, they were stupid if they didn’t notice her or not very observant. The burrow was big enough for her so she crept into the darkest corner of it and she used all her concentration to teleport up to one of the shaded trees. And it somehow counted and worked!
One of the boys began to look around, “Wait, where did she go?”
“I don’t kn-”
Then Tallulah launched herself at them with a war cry. Her force knocked them to the ground. Their weapons had been flung out of their hands into the thick brush.
“AGGHHH!!! WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?!”
She disappeared again, watching them look around with fear. It made her happy to see their terror at every little sound. Maybe she was an Ares kid? But violence didn’t appeal to her much. Now wasn’t the time! She smacked them again, this time with her sword. She took a slice at one of their ankles and kicked the other in the back. They seemed disoriented as they ran off in the opposite direction. She had done her job. But then she heard another rustle and hopped back into the foliage.
“I know you’re there, LaFlamme.” called out a familiar voice, “Come out and face me!”
Their soft brown eyes made Tallulah realize who it was. So she decided to humor him and stepped out.
“It’s gotta be hard to fight with hair constantly in your eyes.” She smiled, pointing her sword at Luke’s helmet.
He quickly brushed his hair away and pointed his sword back, “I’ll have you know I’m the best swordsman this camp has seen in the 300 years.”
Tallulah rolled her eyes and advanced at him. He easily deflected her. So as this dance continued she formed a plan. She may not be able to defeat him but she could distract him long enough. She continued the duel without much energy, easily being pushed to the ground.
“I’ve gotta say I’m disappointed in you, LaFlamme.” Luke chuckled, holding his sword to her neck.
Tallulah shook her head, “Same. I never thought you would be tricked so easily.”
Luke gave a confused look. There was no obvious way she could defeat him. But she had noticed he wasn’t wearing armor on his legs. So she took a strong kick at his shins. Because of the unexpected blow he tripped and fell to the ground. Tallulah quickly jumped up and pointed her sword at the back of his neck.
She clicked her tongue, “Wow, Castellan. That was a hard fall.”
Luke tried to get back up but Tallulah put a foot on his back. After a solid 5 minutes Tallulah let him back up.
“But that game isn’t over?”
“I will tackle you if you go for the flag.”
He raised an eyebrow at her. She could be bluffing but she trusted her strength. So they stood there for a minute or so in a game of chicken. That was until screams of joy erupted through the woods. Tallulah beamed as her teammates came running through with the bright blue flag. Luke dramatically sighed and jogged off.
“Look! We did it!!!” Lou-Ann squealed.
She was leaping around like a little rabbit, making Tallulah laugh. She then dragged Tallulah off and the girl named Mae followed after them.
“I surprisingly didn’t see, ugh, Castellan. But I did beat up some Athena kids! I leaped at them with a violent rage and swung at them with my sword! It was so cool!” Lou-Ann boasted, taking slices in the air.
“I saw! I took some pretty amazing shots with my bow!” Mae added.
“I destroyed 2 Hermes kids and distracted Castellan! It was pretty thrilling.”
As they made their way to the bonfire they all kept recounting the moves they made and tactics they used. When they arrived, Alexandria waved them all over.
“Sad we lost, but you guys were amazing!” Alex complimented.
Lou-Ann and Mae returned the compliments, recounting some of her team’s moves.
Eventually Tallulah joined in.
“Can I ask why you use a boomerang as a weapon?”
Alex held onto a wooden boomerang with colorful stripes around the end. She tossed it around in her hands before answering.
“I just think they’re pretty snazzy. Most people don’t expect to get hit in the back of the head with one!”
She had a point. It’s about as expected as getting hit with a log. She totally didn't experience that. Look, kids are really competitive during tag.
“Do y’all want to hear about the canoe story?” Alex inquired.
Tallulah had learned over the past few days that she was quite the kleptomaniac. Maybe it was a Hermes kid thing but Alex was on a whole nother level. So this story sounded interesting. Everyone settled in a circle around Alex as she cleared her throat.
“So basically, Luke snuck me out of camp for one of his errands and I saw this really nice canoe sitting outside this building! It was called, like, Dick’s Sporting Goods or something!”
“Did you actually steal a canoe?!”
“Maybe, there was a kid and his dad inside of it talking about how excited they were to go on a boating trip! So I pushed the dad out and punted the child. Then dragged it back to camp! The little kid was so emotional!”
Tallulah’s mouth hung open.
“Have you never been outside of camp before?!”
“Me and my mom live in Kansas, in the middle of nowhere. WE LIVE OFF THE LAND. She makes homemade ketchup everyday!” Alex announced with a corny grin.
Tallulah couldn’t hold her laughs back anymore. Soon Mae and Lou-Ann joined in.
“That was one of the more odd things she has dragged back to camp.” Luke snickered from behind.
Out of surprise, Tallulah screamed. When he laughed more she playfully smacked him across the head.
“You have so much chemistry with a guy you’ve known for 3 days.” Alex giggled.
“Hey!” Tallulah delivered another playful smack this time to Alex.
Lou-Ann shook her head, disgusted, “Talls is way too good for mouth breather over there!”
Luke feigned gasps.
“Yeah! He’s isn’t nearly as attractive as our girl here!” Mae added.
Luke dramatically fainted and draped himself over the log. Tallulah rolled her eyes with a smile. Even though Luke had gorgeous charcoal curls and a charming crooked smile… He was such a good friend! The moon was full and was shining over the camp making Tallulah feel powerful. It had been a good day. Even though she was still getting used to this world.
First off, sorry for mass posting today! I don't mean too but I need to use my productivity when I can!
For those interested in Night, Laughter, and a sword, I might be rewriting parts of it!
I dislike how quickly Tallulah and Luke are going together and I want it to be a bit slower :)
So yeah, that its. If you don't like all my The Outsiders content then just block it on your tags! (Not that anyone has complained or anything) I just post as my hyperfixtations go
Chapter 5~Night, Laughter, and a Sword
Word count: 1.3k
Warnings: Some description of play violence
Summary: Just hangouts with the group and a little more information on the new cabin. (Yes, I know it is inaccurate for the Nyx and Hypnos kids to have a cabin since that is kind of Luke's motivation and yada yada, but I need it for plot reasons)
Previous~Next
Tallulah laid out all the sketches so far of the new cabin. Annabeth had helped out with the outside, seeming very interested in architecture. But Tallulah was glad for the company. Alex also helped a lot with the concepts. She was amazing at drawing but didn’t seem to focus much on it as a skill. Then of course there was Luke. Who coincidentally was at her side right there and then.
“Thah wone is sorta…emo.” He muffled, a glazed donut stuffed into his mouth.
Tallulah playfully smacked him on the head, “Don’t talk with your mouth full! It’s annoying.”
Alex appeared in the window and knocked on the pane. She never seemed to use the door.
“Hey y’all! I have some room designs if you want!” She announced with a canvas bag full of scrolls and writing tools.
Tallulah quickly helped her into the room and unfurled the scrolls. There were bed layouts, a stargazing platform, constellation charts, and a hangout area. But something seemed to be missing in that space. Where the beanbags were, the wall was bare. It may not have been the final design, but something needed to be there.
“What about there?”
“Well, I don’t have all the furniture and decor planned out yet. Annabeth just gave me the basic structures.”
Then Tallulah remembered something from her childhood. A fond memory of her and her dad. The late summer nights of June and August, he would usually get out his projector and a white sheet. She would set up blankets and pillows while he hooked it all up. Then they would hook it up to a computer and watch whatever movie they wanted. Some nights they would laugh at their favorite comedies. A big smile plastered on her face as tears rolled down her cheeks. Others her dad would put on sad tragedies. Dabbing his tears dramatically. Some nights they would put on silent films and make the voices themselves. Many of these kids haven’t seen their parents in a while or feel alone. So she came up with another big idea.
“Do you know any way I can message my dad?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Of course 2 Hermes kids could find a way to get the message to him. But there was no telling how quickly he could respond. So in the meantime she needed some more input on the designs. But she also had her other activities. Like her favorite, archery. And her least favorite, sword fighting. Sword fighting was fun, but she just had to have Luke as a mentor. It was his passion so he made her train for hours. And it was really tiring. Especially when she had better things to do.
“No! You need to lunge with this foot.” He sighed, demonstrating.
“Do we really need to keep going?” Tallulah groaned, “It’s been like 3 hours!”
“Just a couple more minutes!”
He had said that 20 times now. That wasn't an exaggeration either, Tallulah had been counting.
“All right, one more time!”
“Guess I have to try this time!” Tallulah sighed dramatically.
Luke rolled his eyes and pointed his sword. She lunged forward at him, aiming for his stomach. Luke easily blocked it and attempted to slice at her shoulder. But she ducked and kicked his ankle. Luke drew in a sharp breath of pain but pointed his sword at her neck.
“I’m sorry, did that hurt, Castellan?” Tallulah taunted even though he had the upper hand.
“Well I could have pinned you. That would have hurt.” He smirked.
Suddenly Alex appeared in a tree with a goofy grin, “Woah woah woah there Luke! We don’t need any flirting in this establishment!”
Luke’s face became bright red, “I wasn’t flirting!”
Alex gave him a look that gave the vibes of sure and Luke punched her arm. Tallulah just smiled. She sort of wished she had that sort of bond with someone. But maybe she would now.
“Tallulah! Luke! Where are y’all!” Lou called from afar.
“We’re over here!” Alex called back.
“Oh! You found them!” Mae exclaimed.
“Were they making out?” Lou shouted, crashing through the brush.
“NO!” Tallulah and Luke shouted at the same time.
Tallulah huffed, “I’ve only known him for a week, what makes you think we are so deeply in love?!”
“I’ve read his diary! It’s in my stash of steals!”
Tallulah opened and closed her mouth a couple times while Luke smacked Alex on the head.
“C’mon weirdos, you’ve been training for a while.”
“Tell me something I don’t know!”
“Well it’s bonfire time, let's go!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mae led the songs with her siblings as the bonfire glowed on everyone’s faces. Tallulah didn’t know any of the words but it was fun to see everyone sing together. But soon enough, Luke took her to meet another camper. He had blonde hair that was neatly combed and black glasses. And earbuds in, making it seem he wasn’t focusing on anything around him. But he plucked one out and looked up at them.
“Is this Tallulah?” He questioned, raising his eyebrows.
“Yep! I thought you might want to talk to her about the cabin designs.” Luke explained.
Matthew got up and dusted his pants, “Uh, hi. Name’s Matthew. I’m a kid of Hephaestus and helping with the welding and stuff of your new cabin.”
“Nice to meet ya! I don’t have too many questions, but if you have any, go ahead!”
Well, he had a lot of questions. Tallulah didn’t know one could ask so many! Half of it she just pretended like she understood things like the different types of screwdrivers. Soon enough, her eyes drifted back over to Luke and Alex. A group of girls were talking to Luke, giggling and batting their eyelashes. This seemed like some weird setup in your typical high school rom-com so Tallulah didn’t bother going over to him. If girls wanted to flirt with Luke why should she care? But… Matthew was getting kind of overwhelming. So she said her apologies and walked back over to Alex and Lou.
“I don’t understand why girls are so obsessed with mr. swordfighter! He’s the least cool guy here!” Lou groaned.
“Oh really, then who’s the coolest in your eyes?” Tallulah raised an eyebrow.
Lou went silent and her face flushed red.
“Well? Who is it?” Alex grinned.
Lou whispered so quietly Tallulah almost couldn’t hear her, “Loch Stirling…”
They snickered as Lou crossed her arms and harrumphed. Until Alex pointed Tallulah into Luke’s direction.
“I think prince charming needs some saving.” Alex hinted as Luke seemed to look more panicked than enjoying the attention.
Some of their girls were getting a bit close to him, one even putting her hand on his chest so Tallulah could understand his uncomfortable feelings. So she strided over to him and put a hand on his shoulder.
“Uh, hey girls. We need Castellan back to settle an argument. If that’s not too much trouble!”
“What, want him for yourself, new girl?” One of the girls hissed, “Well guess what, you have no chance!”
Tallulah took a step back. Maybe she really was in some weird cringey movie.
“Bye girls, I always need to be responsible for these crazy kids!” Luke called out as Tallulah dragged him off.
“That was a bit strange.”
“I know, I know. Thanks for saving me. They can get a bit…handsy.”
“I could tell. They have a lot of confidence that they probably shouldn’t have…”
Luke chuckled and took a seat next to Alex.
Alex gasped, “My dear brother, rejecting the advances of the ladies! I thought I would never live to see the day!”
“Shut up!”
“Nah, don’t feel like it.”
“You really have the annoying younger sister role covered huh?”
“Yep, Annabeth also helps with that!”
As her name was spoken, Annabeth joined them and raised her eyebrow at Luke.
“What’s going on here?”
“Oh, just poking at Luke. He was basically getting run over by girls!”
Annabeth rolled her eyes with a smile, “Him of all people!”
Tallulah laughed as the roasts went on. She wished life could always be this easy. But life as a demigod was about to get very rough.
“Help! Kay Thatcher was dragged away!”
Mini-Chapter Night, Laughter, and a Sword
Word Count: 527
Summary: A small chapter in Alex's perspective. A little about her past.
Warnings: N/A
Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alex swung her boomerang to Tallulah. Catch had become their favorite thing to do. It was always a nice way to just chat with each other. It was also a really good activity for stamina training. Tallulah raced after it and jumped off a stump to catch it.
She panted, “Nice job, Alex! These throws are really good! A bit hard to catch though.”
“Oh well, been doing it my whole life.” Alex shrugged with a grin, “Always a good way to get coons and foxes away from chickens.”
“Let’s take 5, before I pass out.” Tallulah decided, resting against a nearby tree.
Alex settled next to her. A cooling breeze passed through the clearing. She lifted her head and nodded to the soft melody of the birds.
Tallulah stretched her arms with a deep breath, “Mind telling me about your home?”
Alex smiled softly and crossed her legs. It had been a little while since she had been back.
“Well, I’m from Kansas. Me and my mama live on a dusty little farm a little ways from the nearest town. Not quite in the middle of nowhere but also not in a busy neighborhood if you know what I mean.”
Tallulah closed her eyes but was still listening intently. It honestly meant a lot to Alex. It had been a good while since she had someone listen to her with interest. Especially about home.
“We have a couple animals and crops. Never really bothered me that I didn’t have a dad. But we did and still have these 3 old dudes that live next door. They come and sit on the porch with my mama sometimes. Not real good hearing though. Two of them are named Larry, then there’s also Gerald. I would try to chat with them but they could never hear me! All they would answer with was “HUUUUUH?!” kind of annoying but I got used to it.”
Alex giggled as she could almost hear them now. It was kind of weird what company a county girl could find when all alone.
“Did you ever have many friends?” Tallulah inquired, opening one eye to look at Alex.
“Nah… Not ones my age at least. But I was pretty content with what I had. My mama always told me my dad went to work on the railroads. Not the most popular job but I believed her. I wonder if she really knew the truth.”
“What’s your mom’s name?”
“Pamela Fleet. Or Pam for short. I miss her a bunch.” Alex sighed.
She could see her mother’s warm brown eyes and light brunette hair. Stripes of gold and gray in it. A big grin always on her face.
Tallulah stopped her humming for a minute or so, seeming to contemplate something.
“Forgive my straightforwardness, but is she…dead?”
Alex’s mouth gaped open,“Ah heck no! She’s alive and well! Running the farm with the Larrys and Gerald. Going berry picking on some of the trails near our home. I go back every Summer.”
Tallulah laughed, “Sorry, you just used a lot of past tense.”
She got up and lended a hand to Alex, “C’mon. Let’s keep playing.”

Night, Laughter, and a Sword Chapter 2
Summary: Tallulah makes her way to the mysterious Camp Half-Blood with Penelope. With a surprisingly less amount of monsters then she expected. As well as just her being introduced to the camp.
Pre-TLT
Word Count: 1,872
Warnings: N/A
*Several characters in here are from the real Percy Jackson universe. I did not create them but you will recognize them.*
*Also will be using show descriptions*
Random: I'll mainly be posting these on Fridays but because I already had this prepared I decided to post it :) Hope you guys enjoy!
Previous~Next
Tallulah traced over her new scars. They stretched up her right arm and shoulder like white lighting strikes. It reached all the way up to her neck. Which kind of surprised her, injuries to the neck were never good. But she had healed just fine. As she brushed through her dark, wavy hair she could hear her dad making breakfast downstairs. So she pulled her new bright orange shirt over her head and made her way downstairs. Pel was sitting at the table, nervously tapping her hooves. Which was another thing Tallulah found out about her friend. Satyrs were quite strange. Her dad snapped her out of her thoughts and gave a side hug to her, sliding a bowl of cereal across the table. She smiled at him and took her seat.
“I asked the guys if I could take the morning off since you needed to head to a summer camp. And… you know I wanted to be there!”
“Thanks, Dad. I really appreciate it.”
For a last breakfast, it moved much quicker than she wanted. Soon enough, they were all out the door and hopped onto her dad’s four wheeler. It felt so natural to feel the wind whipping through her hair and seeing the world zoom by. It was definitely something she was going to miss. But Penelope assured her that she would have lots of fun at camp. Her dad also comforted her, even though he was holding back tears. Eventually, they made it to a train station. Tallulah gave her dad the tightest squeeze ever, refusing to let go till he did. Then he cupped her face and promised he would send letters or whatever he needed to do to see her. But she had to get on the train. Pel promised him she would do everything for her and hopped on too. As they sat down in their car, the train began moving. Tallulah watched as her dad disappeared from view, forests taking the place of the train station. As Tallulah stared out the window, she realized she had a lot of questions to fill up the ride. Luckily Pel was happy to answer them.
“Why didn’t you bring me to camp at the “right” age?”
“Because I-I um… thought you could handle yourself. And you were never suspicious. But it wasn’t right for me to not bring you.”
“How about my mom?”
“We will hopefully find out soon.”
“Do I get to go home?”
“Most go home after the summer. But some stay year-round. Your decision really.”
“Why didn’t monsters come after me more?”
“I don’t know, maybe they just don’t like to trample through the forests of Maine.”
The question session could have lasted forever, but they needed to rest. So Pel went to bed and Tallulah stared out the window. This world seemed so new and scary. Would she truly fit in? Constellations seemed to light up the sky, Tallulah picking out each one. It calmed her nerves and soon enough she drifted off to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As morning broke over the field, they finally made it to the location. It seemed they were right outside NYC on an island. Tallulah didn’t exactly know where they were but Pel definitely did. She led Tallulah down the roads and through forests with ease. Tallulah was used to long hikes from her life in Maine, but this seemed to last forever. After several hours of walking (and water breaks) they reached a seemingly important forest. The sun was near the edge of the sky, highlighting each tree.
“This is Half-Blood hill, our last part of the journey. Then we’ll be at the camp”
A large archway appeared as they climbed up a hill. Ancient Greek engraved into it.
“Here we are!” Penelope declared.
“Oh.” Tallulah said with disappointment.
But as they walked through the doorway, it quickly turned to a gasp of awe. It was beautiful. Penelope walked down the road and looked at her expectantly.
“C’mon!”
She held onto her hand as they strided through the paths, passing several kids with the neon CHB shirts. Tallulah started to feel her nerves, her anxious thoughts bouncing through her brain. “Hey, now that I have my normal legs back I can actually keep up with you!” Pel joked and distracted her.
“Wow! SOoOo impressive!” Tallulah shot back sarcastically.
Pel seemed to always make her feel better. Eventually they made it to a large house. A centaur came up to her and shook her hand. It was kind of freaky how much he towered over her.
“My name is Chiron, I'm in charge of Camp activities.” He introduced, “And that is Mr. D. Head of the camp.”
The man in a patterned shirt and scruffy beard gave a small wave.
Tallulah returned the wave, “Nice to meet you, uh when do I meet my godly parent?”
Chiron began to explain but was quickly cut-off by Mr.D.
“I’m your father, pleased to meet you. Now if you could-”
Tallulah rolled her eyes, “Sure, I’ll let my mortal father know he is no longer my father.”
Chiron shook his head, “He’s just messing with you. As soon as they claim you, you’ll know. Here, let’s go to the cabins.”
Tallulah followed quickly behind the clip-clopping of Chiron’s hooves. She was only half-listening as Chiron explained everything going on and how it all worked. That was until they reached the cabins. 12 glittering cabins surrounded a small area, and a small 13th one was off the path. It was the most fancy thing she had seen, in a forest at least. As Chiron continued to ramble, Tallulah’s eyes wandered to each camper. She took in each small characteristic of them, noticing little constellations of freckles on each face. Until she reached a taller, dark and curly haired boy. He had chestnut brown eyes that just so happened to be staring back at her. She gave a soft smile, making him quickly look away.
Kind of creepy. After Chiron left she was led to the Hermes Cabin. That was where the unclaimed stayed. Penelope immediately decided to embarrass her by announcing her presence to the entire cabin. Her face turned hot and she avoided eye contact as Pel told everyone who she was. She could have at least done that for herself! After that, her friend disappeared to do her own stuff. So Tallulah took to unpacking stuff. She didn’t have too much, a star map, a picture of her dad and her on a fourwheeler, and her sword.
“That’s a pretty cool sword.”
Tallulah nearly screamed as the voice sounded right behind her. It was the guy who was staring at her earlier!
“Thanks, I guess. It’s from my apparent goddess of a mother.”
“I see.You know, you’re a bit older than most new kids here.” He pointed out like she was stupid.
“Yeah, and you could give a proper introduction after staring at me.” She answered with a bite in her tone.
She knew she should be nice but she didn’t appreciate the obvious fact. He was about a head taller than her, but that didn’t matter to her.
He turned a shade of pink, “Sorry, wasn’t trying to sound rude. My name is Luke. Luke Castellan.”
“Tallulah LaFlamme.”
He nodded and stuck his hand out, “Great to meet ya.”
She nodded back with an awkward smile, “Uhhh, just going to stand there or?”
He quickly moved out of the way and dramatically waved her off. She had barely stepped out of the cabin before she was stopped again. But this time, the girl really appeared out of nowhere. She jumped and quickly turned into a defensive stance. She could hear a laugh from Luke, but the girl in front of her just rolled her eyes.
“Knock it off, Luke!” she scolded, “Sorry, my name is Alexandria!”
The girl had brown hair and dark green eyes. She was also around the same height as Tallulah
“Um, my name is Tallulah?”
“Nice to meet you! I know the first days can be pretty scary. But don’t worry, you seem cool!”
Tallulah smiled, “Thanks, do you know where food is?”
Alex nodded with a grin and led her off. Tallulah was quite eager to eat, but she wasn’t happy about more walking. That’s when one of the taller girls spotted her. She approached Tallulah with her group and looked her up and down. She snickered and rolled her eyes when Tallulah side-eyed her. The girl attempted to shove Tallulah but it didn’t work. She easily widened her stance, making it so she couldn’t be knocked over. Just a trick Tallulah had learned.
“Clarisse! Stop bullying the new campers!”
Clarisse looked back and groaned, “Ugh! She seems like she can hold her own without your defense anyways!”
Luke caught up with them.
“You ok?”
“Yeah? I’ve been through worse. Like being thrown through a window.”
Tallulah walked off with Alexandria before anyone could react.
Alexandria snickered, “Wow, what’s with the attitude towards Luke?”
Tallulah shrugged, “I’m glad he’s trying to be nice but I also don’t need him following me around. Though I probably could have been kinder”
“Don’t worry, he won’t take it personally.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since most of her day was spent walking, Tallulah was very happy to finally eat dinner. Her and Alexandria sat down at an empty table soon joined by Luke.
“Dude! I want to meet the new girl without you ruining it!”
“I don’t see how I’ll ruin it. I just want to make she’s comfortable!”
“Hey!” Tallulah interrupted, “It’s ok, he can join us.”
Luke waved some of his Hermes Cabin buddies over and took a seat. Smirking at Alexandria while he did it.
“So, who’s the newbie?” one of the guys asked, pointing a fork at her.
“Never point a possible weapon at someone!” Tallulah answered, pointing her spoon back.
Alexandria grinned, “This is Tallulah! She’s from Maine and arrived an hour ago. She’s a pretty cool person in my opinion!”
Tallulah was glad that at least someone here liked her, that was all she really needed. But the rest of the group liked her sass. So they were warming up too.
“Where did you get those scars?” Luke questioned.
It took Tallulah a solid 5 seconds to realize what he was talking about. The reminder made her flashback for a second, remembering the pain.
“It was from being thrown through a window. The Chimera did it.”
The group’s eyes widened. Several of them glanced at each other.
Luke broke the silence, “The Chimera?”
She nodded slowly. Was something wrong with her first monster?
“That’s a pretty fierce beast, how did you defeat it?”
Tallulah went into the story of the fierce, but short, battle. Alexandria seemed pretty impressed with her fighting skills. Luke as well, surprised she had such little training. For once, she felt as much pride as the day she killed her first deer. Maybe it was a weird analogy, but hey she was a pretty weird person. A bell rang out to signal the end of dinner.
“I’ll save you a seat at the bonfire, Talls!” Alexandria assured, patting her on the shoulder.
Tallulah gave a grin. What a warm welcome.
