Hi! What episodes of Eric's TBD RPG does Taliesin appear in please?
Hi there! Taliesin appears in the following episodes:
12-19, 24
Shield of Tomorrow episodes 40 & 41 (This is a crossover with the group's Star Trek campaign, but it does continue the Eric's TBD RPG story. Taliesin appears at the very end of episode 40.)
Eric's TBD RPG Holiday Special
The entire show can be watched either on Twitch (subscription required) or on Youtube (for free).
I would recommend for anyone interested that they start at the first episode, even though I initially started with episode 12 myself, because I ended up rewatching the whole thing from the beginning anyway. The story and players really are all wonderful.

C2E40 - Dubious Pursuits - rewatch
IT’S A HALLOWEEN EPISODE I FORGOT IT’S A HALLOWEEN EPISODE
for a split second I was trying to remember if we got the happy fun ball early, but no, that’s going to be probably the NEXT Halloween episode (“Jester! Put it down!  NOW!” is burned into my head.  I can’t tell if it’s Caleb or Liam but *fans self*)
Aw, no Laura this episode.  And I love that Travis’s costume is a hat and M&M gloves.  How is Sam’s ketchup costume more put together??? XD
Oh!  Liam’s back to the dark mug!  (and Travis’s gloves have come off INSTANTLY)
I love Liam doing the ‘Kylo Ren’ voice because I don’t watch Star Wars (I’m not a big action movie person, star trek tv shows tend to be more my jam. Hence why I’m also not big on the new star trek movies that were just action movies), so I have no clue if it’s accurate or not.
THEY BROKE MATT!!!! It’s so so rare now that they get him with a shout out, I love when it happens!  Travis did it this time ‘round.
...Caleb asking how many eyes he has right now hits WAY different XDDD
What the fuck is that flask Sam omg
Ah, the three murals with the three eyes in each, a deliberate red herring from Matt.  It was fun hearing him talk about this and what plot threads could have come from this during the wrap up.
I like that the Uk’otoa mural has amber eyes all along the body, and I’m just here thinking that Caleb should pry some out so he won’t need to buy any for his eventual Vault. XD
Hmmm.  After last Talks Machina where Liam said that Caleb would try to stop Fjord from raising Uk’otoa, I wonder if Caleb grabbing Fjord to talk before he could follow Avantika into the well was planned deliberately.  It ends up not making much of a difference, because Fjord does still get there first and just fails to figure out how to place the eye, but still.
HOURGLASS!!!  We never got many of these.  Have they ever actually run out the time on camera?
Enlarging Caduceus! Very smart move!!  (also I totally think Matt wiffed the roll for Yasha, and that’s why he gave Beau advantage instead.  He’s a very generous DM)
LOL as I bring it up, the sand runs out.  Penalty is only that the water fully fills the chamber, which is not too bad.
I like how after this, they I think always have someone with the spell water breathing.  Burn me once!
Faaaaaack another combat.
Ah, the Kiss of Life.  This is one of those moments that so small, but it’s so hard to imagine the campaign if it didn’t happen.  Though a part of me does wonder how the scene would have played out if 1) Caduceus was the one with the key, or 2) if Laura was actually there.  I feel like at least part of Fjord’s decision came from Travis not wanting his wife’s PC to die while she wasn’t there, and I do wonder if he would have gone for a kiss had Cad been the one instead, or if he would have done a more physical attempt of taking the key and dragging Cad along or something like that.
I like when Matt starts the chase skill challenge he straight up says that they have six rounds of it.  It gives them an idea of what to expect, because six is a LOT when you don’t know how much you have to do, and I can see them keep asking after three if they hadn’t made it yet.  So saying six ahead of time means that they’re aware of exactly how long this can take.
They don’t roll damage for the fluffernutter, so I don’t think we actually find out how much damage it can do!  Sad times.
Nott drawing the attention of the lizard-folk hits a LOT harder in hindsight knowing about her sacrificing herself to save Yeza and Luc.  This is, apparently, a trademark tactic of hers, despite her as Nott seemingly being very ‘selfish’ (except not really).  It also adds to both Veth and Nott’s stories.  It’s not her first choice to be self-sacrificing.  It’s not her second choice either.  But when the chips are down, it’s the risk that she will take herself rather than risking those she cares about.
Even though it was Taliesin’s idea, I like that it’s Yasha who is picking up and carrying Caleb when he hits two points of exhaustion.  I JUST WANT MORE YASHA CALEB INTERACTION.  These little guilt ridden introverts didn’t get enough time together. :(
Oh wow, after break almost EVERYONE is mostly out of costume except for Matt!!  (I suppose Sam is too, but he’s wearing a fricken ketchup costume, it’s hard to count it.  I suppose props for still wearing the hat, as that’s got to be uncomfortable)
I find it very very funny that the Squalleater name just sounds super wrong.  It’s the Ball Eater, Matt, get it right! XD
LOL after calling them out, Sam takes off his costume too.  PROPS WITHDRAWN.  ONLY MATT WINS.
It’s very interesting hearing Fjord pretty vehemently reject the possibility of releasing Uk’otoa at this time.  When they are in Xhorhas and his powers are taken away, Travis confirmed (I think in the wrap up, but maybe in a Talks) that he was 100% ready to go and release Uk’otoa just to get his powers back.  Knowing that, and seeing how against it Fjord is here is a fascinating play of how one can feel in control when one has what they want.  Fjord very much wants to continue to get more power, perhaps not the power that he would get from a full release, but the Control Water – he is very disappointed that he didn’t get it and is very driven to get it.  With his powers lost entirely, he seriously considers a prospect that he had rejected out of hand.   ...I have thoughts about this tying into his decision to serve the Wildmother, and Travis’s decision to multiclass, but I don’t have the energy to put it into words, so just assume that I said something very thought provoking and well worded.  (so not like my usual write ups XD)
Fuuuuuuck, Caleb’s face when he tells Fjord “you do what you have to” in regards to Avantika and the glass of wine.  I would not have been so aware of it had someone else not done a fantastic write up of how Caleb was taught to use his sexuality and how that colors his views of how the Avantika/Fjord interactions should go.  I can’t remember the post or who wrote it, but I did reblog it when I saw it ages ago.
AWWWW, Nott giving Fjord the vial of acid and the genuineness of the interaction.  Team Green, I believe is the name, SUCH a good combo of sass and feels.
I very much appreciate the fact that Matt is clearly giving Travis the opportunity to have these RP sessions with Avantika without having to have it go into overt sexuality, something that he knows Travis is uncomfortable with.  Matt gives little winks and nods, allowing the opening if Travis wanted to take action, but in no way makes it a ‘must do this to proceed’ sort of thing.  It makes Travis being willing to take that step fully his own decision without feeling pressured.
I like how “Seamen, seamen everwhere” “and not a drop to drink” ended up being the thing that broke Matt.

An off-grid adventure in the Arizona desert
In search of some pre-winter warmth before the snow starts to fall in Chicago, SLH’s Barter Room Co-ordinator, Katrin Holtkott, ventures into the sun-soaked Arizona desert to experience the natural beauty of Castle Hot Springs, an off-grid oasis set within the Bradshaw Mountains.
Tumblr media
Driving the last 7.5 miles on a ‘primitive’ road it became apparent why a high clearance vehicle had been suggested at Phoenix airport, only one hour south of Castle Hot Springs. We took it slow in our four wheel drive truck and marvelled at the stunning, film set-like vista of cacti, distant mountain ranges and the occasional donkeys. Nestled in this wild and utterly beautiful landscape is Castle Hot Springs – an oasis of green lawns, thermal springs and kitchen gardens.
Ad Astra – Reaching for the Stars
Our Sky View Cabin, opposite Salvation Peak, epitomises understated elegance with no creature comfort neglected. The private outdoor bath and shower (and there is an indoor shower too if the great outdoors do not call your name), the telescope on the balcony for star gazing at night (no light pollution makes for an unbelievable firmament of twinkling brilliance), the Nespresso machine with great sized mugs for morning coffee while watching the sun rise in a delicate shade of pink on the mountain peaks opposite, makes you want to spend as much time as humanly possible in the cabin – but there is just so much else to experience.
Tumblr media
The Main Attractions
The farm tour, the history tour, the Petroglyph tour, morning yoga and meditation, massage treatments, Via Ferrata, paddle board yoga, guided hikes, wine tasting, mountain e-bikes, pickleball, Bocce ball, the film documentary on Castle Hot Springs – all vie for your immediate participation – and we tried so, so hard to sample everything on offer in four days, while at the same time taking time to float in the mineral rich waters of the natural hot spring pools, soaking up sunshine and expertly prepared cocktails by bartenders Russell and Marcin.
Yoga and meditation in the Stonehouse – led by Mike and Colleen was the perfect start to my day. My husband Paul elected to remain wrapped in the softest terry robe on the planet, on our private balcony, enjoying the silence and scenic desert mountains, before meeting for breakfast overlooking the pool. No downward facing dog for him – but relaxation never the less, before immersing ourselves in the Castle Hot Springs daily activities.
Tumblr media
One of the highlights was Via Ferrata – a climbing experience employing rungs and ladders fixed to the rock face traversed by steel cables to which the climbers are secured with a harness. Ryan, our wonderful lead guide, took us from valley level to about 350 feet with breath taking views and confidence building encouragement. Paul’s Bradshaw Hot Stone Massage left him equally elated without the need of changing altitude.
The history tour made us realise that we were following in the footsteps of some of America’s most prominent families, who all flocked to Castle Hot Springs in their heyday – The Rockefellers, the Wrigleys and future President J.F. Kennedy all stayed at the resort. Do ask about the link between J.F.K. and the flag on Salvation Peak – it is a great story and made us hike to the peak one morning, just because we could – and we were rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views of the Hieroglyphic Mountains.
From Farm to Table
Josh, one of the enthusiastic gardeners, hosted the farm tour, pointing out where the ingredients for our amazing meals came from, how they experiment with new varieties and how the bar and kitchen vie for special and new ingredients to create their magic – who knew that there were so many different varieties of pepper, cucumber and tomatoes! And this brings me neatly to the outstanding meal experiences.
Tumblr media
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included in your stay – and if none of the activities entice you to venture into the Arizona desert – the food prepared by Executive Chef Christopher Brugman and his Equipes is reason alone to make the trip. We have never, ever enjoyed food like it – to say we ate dinner is a disservice, we savoured each and every fork and spoon full, the fresh and delicate flavours explode and combine to create unrivalled culinary memories. I was prepared to offer my first born in exchange for the mint chimichurri recipe – I still am!
Local Landmarks
We did manage to tear ourselves away from this historic resort to explore the surrounding area – Montezuma Castle National Monument is a leisurely 90 minute drive away, and well worth a visit. The changes in the landscape and vegetation are amazing and the actual monument is awe-inspiring. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West is only an hour away (pre-booking the house tour is essential), as is the Hole in the Rock. These two landmarks can easily be visited on the way to or from the airport.
Keep Coming Back For More…
Frankly there is more than enough to keep you at Castle Hot Springs – with horses arriving in November for trekking, more Via Ferratas possible in the future, and the new Agave farm five miles away with a bike path planned to link the farm and the resort, why would you venture further afield? In five years, the Agave will be ready for distilling – and I feel it is my personal responsibility to check on its progress annually between now and then. Castle Hot Springs is not only on the National Register of Historic Places, it is now also on my personal register of places to return to again and again. But in the meantime, bring on the Chicago winter. Our stay at Castle Hot Springs has ensured we are ready!
Tumblr media
SLH Insider Tips
Plan your activities in advance – some have to be pre-booked and with so much on offer you really don’t want to miss out.
Keep hydrated – the complimentary, refillable water bottles are yours to take with you as a souvenir of your stay.
Try not to ask for the Wi-Fi code – immerse yourself in this off-grid world of adventures. It’s no wonder that Castle Hot Springs won the title of Most Mindful Wellness Retreat in the SLH Awards 2020.

Talks Machina (Episode 88 spoilers!)
Highlights from this week’s episode:
This week’s pre-show message from Denise: “Brian is a puppet and I’m pulling the strings.”
Overwatch mention! Brian shout-outs D.Va, Marisha’s all about Symmetra, Matt breaks out the McCree voice.
1PM Saturday, much of CR will be playing Mansions of Madness on the stream, and Matt will be guesting on a show at 11AM as well.
Brian: Our special guest, Gil Ramirez. Marisha: (whispers) Don’t fuck us, Gil.
Gil was helping out in the twitch chat from episode one. He’s also been smithing for sixteen years!
Gil uses liquid mercury to balance his steel dice. Travis: ...you just have liquid mercury hanging around?
Gil and Taliesin both have a periodic table collection.
Gil takes off his button-down to reveal a t-shirt that just reads “Don’t fuck me, Gil.” with “Dammit Gil!” on the back.
Gil pulls out cards that read “Malks Tachina” that are all sick burns on Brian.
4:46:50 total gameplay time last week. VM had 936 total HP at the start of the kraken battle, ended with 70 total HP.
A fan points out the similarities between the kraken fight and the Kobayashi Maru in Star Trek--an unwinnable fight to see how you do under great pressure. Marisha points out that nobody is expected to do the Aramente alone, but they’re never told that explicitly, so Keyleth’s been figuring that out, and that was one of the big lessons here. When she decided to planeshift out, she had to trust that Grog was going to finish it without her. She’s been moving beyond her previous urge to be self-sacrificial.
Matt points out that if Keyleth had stayed, Grog probably would’ve stayed until the end, too, and things would’ve gone a lot worse.
Matt wasn’t playing the kraken to full intelligence (his argument being that the rules-as-written version is better suited to being a full-arc villain kind of deal), but if they’d decided to talk to it, it probably would’ve stalled long enough to get everyone exactly where it wanted them.
Travis on Tary not using Luck to reroll: Either he is the most genius, maniacal character in a long-running arc... or he just rolled shitty dice because Gil fucked him.
Keyleth would’ve rather failed the Aramente than kill the kraken or lose her party.
A question on screen flashes twice. Laura (who isn’t even on the show this week) immediately tweets “Two flashes!! Free Denise.”
Grog was trying to abide by Keyleth’s rules of not killing the thing, but his whole priority was getting Vax out, because he realized that not getting him out while he was unconscious might’ve meant losing his body for good. Matt points out that it worked out well that it was always Grog getting eaten, because he was more likely than most of the other party members to deal enough damage to get out.
Why didn’t the water ashari let Korren and Keyleth know Vilya was suspected dead? Matt starts to answer, then admits it’s mostly just to maintain narrative drama, because that’s how storytelling works.
Gil wonders whether one of the lodestones could be Keyleth’s mom. Marisha: ...my mom is octopoo?
Grog’s decision on leaving Tary mostly boiled down to “...eh.” Grog didn’t mind too much that Percy made him go back for Tary, because he didn’t feel too strongly about leaving him behind, but there might be consequences once Friends wears off.
Keyleth would’ve definitely still planeshifted out if Grog and Vax’s positions had been reversed. She trusted that Vax would’ve managed to get out, too.
Travis’ wise words on the Raven Queen: “Didn’t she need the blood jacuzzi to get the thing going?”
Travis thinks Grog would be interested in participating in Vax’s ritual.
Travis was stoked for Vax to join the Dead Club, but he has no idea how it’s going to go because of the Raven Queen.
Matt re: people yelling about revivify/resurrection no matter the outcome: “I... mostly don’t care. I’m still a sensitive boy.”
Brian brings back the intro to the first episode, in which Matt points out that this is the continuation of a home-game and number-crunching shouldn’t be the priority. Of course, Critrolestats is an exception: “They keep track of the numbers we like.”
Brian: “Discussions are great, and we love talking about the show even if we disagree... but when it gets to be this weird thing where people are... it’s like, guys, you’re kind of embarrassing yourself. Like, give me a break, dad. Maybe intense scrutiny of a D&D game that’s on the internet isn’t the best way to live your life.”
Travis: “I’ll never go on [reddit]. It requires reading, right?”
Matt thinks the kraken was probably watching the party for a while, and then Tary’s natural one was a focus point. If they hadn’t failed that challenge, they might’ve had to fight it as they were escaping.
The one spell Marisha forgot to write down on her spell sheet was Freedom of Movement, which would’ve been incredibly clutch in the fight. Matt forgot about it, too.
Matt points out that everyone had an extremely stressful week leading up to that episode. Brian mentions that he’s known everyone for a while, now, and they all generally act the same on-screen as they do off-screen, so they’re not gonna be putting on an act. Sometimes you just get a bit of a slog playing D&D when everyone’s exhausted, but it can still be fun as long as people aren’t going over every decision with a magnifying glass.
SURPRISE ASHLEY WITH AMAZING HAT ON AFTER-DARK
After dark:
The first shot after the break is just a close-up of Trinket.
Matt to Travis, in one of the best out-of-context quotes thus far: “So what you’re saying is that your deviantart is full of vore?”
If Grog had an intelligence of 20 for 24 hours, he’d probably go down to Percy’s workshop and build something.
Matt ran a session pre-stream that was just Pike and Vax, in which the two of them had to fight a chimera. There was also one that was just Vax, Scanlan, and Pike.
If Grog had been left behind and died, Ashley thinks Pike would’ve pulled a Scanlan and left the party, then would’ve gone to go live under the sea until she found him, and would’ve kept his body until she got True Resurrection, “even if it took a hundred years”, so she could bring him back.
Matt re: Keyleth being the only one who hasn’t died: “No, there’s a reason for that. Because she’s my fiancee and I give her special treatment.” Marisha: “Don’t say that even in jest!” Matt: “No, if that were true, I wouldn’t sleep on the couch as often.” Marisha: “They’ll believe that, too! They’ll actually think that’s true!”
Ten or higher on that saving throw and Grog would’ve died in the kraken. Matt rolled a nine (which is why he tweeted the picture).
Marisha’s biggest fear re: ways for her character to die was tripping and falling in lava, which just about happened, so almost anything else would’ve been okay in comparison. Brian: “Keyleth died doing what she loved: a series of errors.” Marisha: “Failing.”
Travis’s Xbox gamertag is MeatyAlbatross.

Imagine you have to do surgery on a Vulcan for the first time AND it’s the ambassador AND he’s your boyfriend’s dad AND your boyfriend’s mom is there AND the ship is shaking AND your boyfriend also might die because of experimental blood transfusion.
I swear Bones’ salary better be a trillion million dollars every second

I don’t know if there’s something in canon to refute this but with the information I have I think Sybok made up that flashback of Sarek saying “so human..” in a bad away when Spock was born.
Cause with McCoy it seems like he was taking one of McCoy’s memories but Spock can’t remember when he was a baby right? Or did Sybok get the memory from Sarek at some point.
I don’t know in my mind I think Sybok constructed that to manipulate Spock and that Sarek didn’t actually say that.
