The Mediterranean Sea is in crisis. Once a thriving spot for biodiversity, it is now the most overfished sea in the world and, according to the WWF, is "on the verge of burnout."
Why? Bottom trawling—a destructive fishing method where nets are dragged along the seabed, catching or destroying everything in their path.
For our 21st Planet Wild mission, we're supporting a beautiful and effective method to stop bottom trawling and protect marine life: an underwater sculpture museum.
Many thanks to the five selected artists who donated their work to the museum: Nikolas Maniatakos, Maria Grazia Collini, Abdulkadir Hocaoglu, Stefano Corti, and Giacomo Bernardi.
A special thanks to Greenpeace, Camilla Salghetti, Barbara Farnetani and Santiago Burin Des Roziers for providing us with additional footage.

...In 2006, a desperate Tuscan government dropped concrete blocks into the sea in an effort to disrupt the trawlers. Fanciulli says they didn’t work, however, as they were too far apart and the nets simply dragged between them.
He got permission from Arpa, the agency for environmental protection, to drop an additional 80 blocks at his own expense. Still, however, he wasn’t satisfied, and his thoughts turned to the shipwrecks he’d loved as a boy. “I didn’t just want concrete,” he says. “I was fascinated with beautiful antiquities underwater.”
He began to wonder: what if, instead of dropping concrete blocks into the water, he dropped art?
He asked a quarry in nearby Carrara if they could donate two marble blocks that he could use to make sculptures. “They donated 100 instead.”
Via word of mouth, contributions from tourists and online crowdfunding, Fanciulli persuaded artists including Giorgio Butini, Massimo Lippi, Beverly Pepper and Emily Young to carve sculptures from the marble. Then he took them out to sea and lowered them in.
The underwater sculptures create both a physical barrier for nets and a unique underwater museum. The sculptures are placed in a circle, 4m apart, with an obelix at the centre carved by the Italian artist Massimo Catalani. Emily Young provided four sculptures, each weighing 12 tons, she calls “guardians”; nearby lies a mermaid by the young artist Aurora Vantaggiato. Lippi has contributed 17 sculptures representing Siena’s contrade, or medieval districts.
The “museum” is open to anyone who can arrange a visit – either through guided scuba tours or by arranging their own dive.
It’s located along the Argentario section of the Tuscan coast, which has been plagued by trawling, and this year boats have been caught carrying illegal nets and fishing in protected waters.
Biologist Roberto Danovaro, who heads the Anton Dohrn research institute in Naples, likened trawling to “fishing with bombs”. “You catch the fish, but also destroy their habitat,” he says. “With no possibility of growing back because trawling is so intense.”
But the museum appears to be having some effect. Whereas 10 years ago the Posidonia was disappearing, Dr Gioia Benedettini, sea manager of Arpat, the local environmental agency, says it is now growing back.
Marine life of all kinds appears to be returning. Algae covers the statues, and lobsters have taken up residence nearby. Talamone is a turtle recovery centre – part of the Tartalife project – and more turtles have been seen, as have dolphins. “In the past it was unusual to see dolphins near the coast,” Faniculli says. “They normally stay offshore, but as industrial fishing destroyed the seabed, they moved close to the statues because, due the repopulation, there is food.”

My dearest friend Luca took me to his camping Village on the beautiful Town of Talamone which boasts an excellent position on the sea, in the shade of the ancient Giannella pine forest facing the islands of Giannutri, Giglio and Montecristo. Comfortable and elegant, it is the most popular tourist resort on this stretch of the Tuscan coast. I am not mad about camping villages but it is a most beautiful spot and had a great Fettuccine with ragù!!! Loved it ❤️ #argentario #talamone #campinglife #livemoments #loveitaly #carpediem #marcusberesford #love #lovefriends #lovefamily #lovelife #liveaslastday #viveremomenti #maiarrendersi #viverelavita #ama #viverecomefosseultimogiorno #vivereilmareilsoleeilvento☀ (presso Talamone Camping Village) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdsyJpbqavL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sailing Tuscany and Sardinia? Discover these mediterranean pearls during a boat tour itinerary!
Tuscany and its archipelago are an infinite beauties heritage famous all over the world and divided between enchanting medieval villages, seaside towns, coastal or inland cultural and gastronomic itineraries.
CONTACT US NOW FOR YOUR PERSONALISED ITINERARY
Sardinia, on the other hand, is a region with unique naturalistic landscapes, wide sandy beaches surrounded by Mediterranean scrub, and typical villages.
What better opportunity to discover these two Italian territories than through a holiday onboard a charter sailboat or yacht?
Where to sail from? The starting point for your sailing itinerary in Tuscany and Sardinia
The Tuscan marinas from which to start a boat trip are many and each one offers the necessary to prepare to set sail.
VIEW ALL THE BOATS BASED IN TUSCANY
Castiglioncello, Cecina, San Vincenzo, the bases further north, are perfect especially for those who want to sail north-west and reach the Corsica coasts.
Salivoli, Scarlino, and Punta Ala, located in the center of Tuscany, are Elba Island’s closest tourist ports, just a few hours away by boat.
Finally, Talamone, Porto Ercole, and Cala Galera are ideal for those who want to visit the nearby Giglio and Giannutri islands or head to Sardinia and southern Italy.
How to choose the best time to leave?
Considering the Sardinia central position in the Mediterranean Sea and the Tuscany continental one, with humid and muggy summers and cold and rainy winters, we can say that the best time of the year to start a sail is from April to October when temperatures range from mild in the scorching heat. In particular, the months of July and August are the hottest and also the most crowded with tourists both on the beaches and in the ports. In this case, however, being on board a rental boat turns out to be a far from obvious advantage!
What could be a possible itinerary to visit just some of the places in these two magnificent regions? We tried to imagine a hypothetical route lasting 10 days along the Tyrrhenian Sea from north to south. If you are looking for inspiration, follow us!
Day 1: set sail for the Elba island
As we said above, Tuscan coasts are not lacking marinas from which it is possible to set sail. Whatever our choice, the distances that separate us from our destination vary from 6 to 30 nautical miles.
After meeting the crew, completing the last briefing, and being sure you have everything you need onboard,  it is finally time to lift anchor!
Any advice? For this kind of travel, it is always good to rely on specialized rental companies. Our choice is Your Boat Holiday, a serious and reliable company to entrust with the complete management of your trip.
Day 2 – Day 4: discovering the Elba island
Elba is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and a favorite destination for yacht charterers in the Tyrrhenian Sea as it offers a series of safe landing places, beaches, and magnificent landscapes.
Easy to reach, this island is able to meet the needs of all its visitors. There are many marinas in which to anchor, equipped with numerous services, and charming towns to visit, whether you are looking for shopping or you want to discover their art and culture.
One of the most appreciated aspects of those who go on holiday by boat to the Elba is the numerous coves sheltered from the winds, which make up the entire coast of the island and which are characterized by a crystalline and clean sea that leaves all its visitors to marvel at the many blue water shades.
Among the most practiced sports are diving and snorkeling. thanks to its rich depths that host numerous fish species. Outdoors lovers can instead spend time on land by hiking and mountain biking, enjoying a game of golf, or relaxing at the San Giovanni spa.
Day 5: The Giglio island
Small and beautiful, the Giglio island offers tourists a territory with a wild character, in which winding paths lead to cliffs and breathtaking landscapes, perfect especially for trekking and long walks lovers. If you have little time available to visit this beautiful island and you are curious to really discover its peculiarities, we advise you to focus your attention on these worth noting tourist destinations:
Giglio Castello is the highest and most fascinating area from which you can enjoy a splendid panoramic view. As it is easy to deduce from the name itself, this town is distinguished by the presence of a beautiful medieval castle.
Giglio Campese, known above all for the largest and most popular beach on the island.
Day 6: The island of Montecristo
Among the islands near Elba, this is certainly the most fascinating and, in some ways, mysterious. In part, it is thanks to Alexandre Dumas, who here set some scenes of one of his most famous novels, The Count of Montecristo. The island of Montecristo is an authentic naturalistic jewel that has remained practically intact. Here is what not to miss during your excursion:
Montecristo fortress. Located on the highest peak of the island (645 meters), the ruins of this ancient fortress stand out on the island. It was erected as a protection against continuous pirate raids.
Cala Maestra. Cala Maestra is the only landing place on the island. Here there is also a small sandy and pebble beach protected on either side by two small rocks.
San Massimiliano monastery. Located at 320 meters high, it is somewhat one of the symbols of the entire island. According to tradition, the monastery was built on an ancient temple dedicated to Jupiter.
Day 7 – Day 10: Tour of the La Maddalena archipelago
The Maddalena archipelago is located on the north-northern coast of Sardinia, off the Costa Smeralda. It consists of 7 major islands (La Maddalena, Caprera, Budelli, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Spargi, Razzoli) and several smaller islets, bathed by a wonderful and transparent sea.
VIEW ALL THE BOATS BASED IN SARDINIA
Unfortunately, our available time does not allow us to visit them all. This is why we focus on the 3 islands that we have chosen for this trip.
La Maddalena
La Maddalena is the largest of the archipelago islands which, not surprisingly, bears its name. It has a triangular shape and almost 45 kilometers of generally high and jagged coasts and rich vegetation of berry trees including the characteristic myrtle. The diffuse reddish rocks color together with the clear water create a continuous and fascinating contrast of colors. The highest point of the island is Monte Guardia Vecchia (156 meters) which is accessed via a road that offers excellent views.
Due to the coasts nature, there are many small coves, among these, we point you out:
Cala dello Spalmatore, located to the north and rich in granite formations;
Cala di Abbatoggia, located to the north and formed by granite cliffs and small sandy stretches, it still preserves an uncontaminated environment;
Cala di Giardinelli, located on the island’s eastern side and sighting Caprera, it is full of spectacular granite formations.
Santo Stefano
With an area of 3 square kilometers, it is one of the smallest islands in this archipelago and is located halfway between the Sardinian coast (one mile from Palau) and La Maddalena.
Considered one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, the island of Santo Stefano, with its 50 hectares of unique nature, is the ideal place for a holiday of pure relaxation. The colors of the sea, ranging from turquoise to blue, blend with the warm pink of the granite rocks.
A rugged coastline, constantly caressed by the breeze and its small white sand beaches makes this place a natural masterpiece.
Guests love to visit the Cala Fumata bathing establishment while the most beautiful panoramic view is observed from the Punta dello Zucchero (101 meters).
Spargi
Uninhabited due to its rugged nature, it has an almost circular shape with few inlets and numerous sandy bays. Spargi rises in front of the western coasts of La Maddalena and is the third-largest island in the archipelago national park with an area of over four square kilometers. A little to the west emerges the rock called Spargiottello, a diving paradise.
The island depths are all surprising: great submerged attractions are the shoal of Washington, off Punta Zanotto and the wreck of Spargi, a Roman cargo ship (35 meters long) from the 2nd century BC, found in 1939 in the Corsara shoal. Part of the cargo is exhibited at the Nino Lamboglia museum in La Maddalena town.

Classic car shows are a summer tradition. But if you want the most exotic, rare, and the most expensive cars in the world, then you need to head to the Monterey Peninsula, Calif. The 67th annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance caps off a week of intensive, obsessive car love.
The Concours this year features 204 of the highest-caliber cars that have ever been made. Essentially, the international car world descends on the region. Fifteen countries and 31 states enter the elite car show held on the famed 18th hole of the Pebble Beach golf course.
That's just the end of a week of car madness, when cars take over the coastal towns of Monterey, Pebble Beach and Carmel by the Sea. The Monterey airport hosts an event of cars and airplanes. There's the Tour d'Elegance, where show cars cruise the streets, a wild exotic car show on Cannery Row (Steinbeck fans wouldn't recognize it), and, most importantly, plenty of public and private auctions. Take a look at the top 20 most expensive cars ever sold (publicly) and more than half were sold in or around car week on the Monterrey peninsula.
