Victor Stage (Germany)
Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge
Composed by Takayuki Iwai.
Though animation wise Victor von Gerdenheim is very silly, his theme suggests a melancholic sadness. What's more, the song seems to skip beats, as if for a heartbeat of a second the music stops, only to continue as if nothing happened. It's like something is missing, but it's hard to identify what...
Unsurprisingly, Victor (as a pastiche of Frankenstein's Monster) has a tragic backstory. The professor who gave him life died before he awoke, and not understanding life and death, Victor interprets his masters' silence as disapproval. Victor wanders the earth and the plane of monsters without guidance or love.

STAGE 78:                                    MARVEL VS Capcom To this day, the Marvel VS Capcom series of fighting games has become one of the most popular, recognizable and profitable franchises for the fighting game genre in the world of video games. Although the first game debuted in the year of 1998, the actual origins of this collaboration between these two legendary companies (Marvel comics and Capcom Respectively) goes back 5 years with the first game from this partnership being the arcade beat 'em up of one of it’s most popular characters, the vigilante known as The Punisher. With the popularity of that game came Capcom’s first Marvel-based fighting games, X-men: children of the atom a year later.
This game's fast paced, frenetic gameplay, special moves and incredibly unique roster of characters would be the foundation for future Marvels VS Capcom series of games for years to come. It also didn't hurt that at the time the x-men comic books and the animated series that aired on the Fox kids saturday morning television block were incredibly popular, completely cementing X-men: children of the atom for instant success.
Funny enough, this was also the first game that featured the first Crossover moment for the series, as the street fighter character AKUMA appeared as a secret character for the game as there was a contractual agreement by capcom to marvel to include a street fighter character for the game.
The next game from this union would be Marvel Super Heroes: War of the gems. This title would expand the scope of the previous game including a whole host of non X-men characters. Although at first it seemed that Marvel superheroes was the same game as x-men, this game's roster and noticeable improvements over its predecessor by way of its presentation, art direction and the implementation of the Infinity gems which added to the already fast and chaotic gameplay, made this game a truly unique and exciting game experience. With the implementation of tag team-based gameplay coming in the form of a mode created for Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams where two players, controlling Ryu and Ken independently, were able to fight against an AI-controlled M. Bison at the same time, which itself was heavily inspired from the final battle sequence from Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, The next game in the series X-Men vs. Street Fighter would introduce a whole new dimension in the fighting game genre and was the true beginning of the Marvel VS Capcom series.
With each game that came from this union of Marvel and Capcom, two powerhouse companies known for their own separate and respected industries, This gaming series would introduce new ideas that would become hallmarks of the crossover series.
Paying homage to not only to marvel but also to the long and storied history of capcom, with the inclusion of well known to the obscure characters to its roster, The union of these two companies did not just revolutionize the fighting game genre; it also created a truly exceptional, memorable and beloved video game experience that is still adored even to this day.
This series was a celebration of a successful partnership between Marvel and Capcom that will never be forgotten, so this is why this STAGE of the retro VGM Revival hour is dedicated to covering the amazing music from the Marvel VS Capcom series.
So let’s get STARTED!!

Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire
this soundtrack is really happy and whimsical for what i imagine a vampire savior game to be.
in fact, this soundtrack has some ridiculously smooth tunes.
check out...“CONCRETE CAVE“ maybe? “VICTOR Ending Theme 1“ is pretty great too...
i also want to point out “FEAST OF THE DAMNED” for being delightfully jazzy. the kind of tune i’d expect to hear from a vampire game.

DAY 1297) Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom - Boss Battle 7 ~Lich~
Composer: Hideki Okugawa, Isao Abe, Takayuki Iwai
(0:00 - 0:06) 3 bars of 5/4, 2 bars of 3/4
(0:06 - 0:25) [4/4, 4/4, 4/4, 3/4]x3, 4 bars of 4/4
(0:25 - 0:41) 1 bar of 7/4, 10 bars of 4/4
[loop from :06]
the 15-beat pattern at :06 definitely feels like “15/4″ or at half tempo 15/8 or whatever so it’s just as “odd time” (if not more “odd time” than) as the 5/4 part at the start even if it’s all written as a loop of 4/4 and 3/4 here. Stuff written at this fast a tempo tends to be that way I guess.
I probably said this before on previous writeups for music from this game, but all 3 of these composers have pretty significant odd time credits to them and all have stuff that vaguely sounds like this so I have no idea who to guess in this composer roster did this one.

RETRO VGM REVIVAL HOUR - Stage 75: DARKSTALKERS
The game originally began development when Capcom decided to make another fighting game using their CPS2 arcade board, which allowed for even better animation, detailed sprites and additional effects.
Various conflicting reports have surfaced as to who exactly over at capcom was responsible for bringing this particular game to life. One story, According to art director Akira Yasuda, was that a Capcom Artist by the name of katya Akitomo had an idea to create a Monster Fighting game which was then given life thanks to a collaboration by game planner Junichi Ohno. The other story comes in the form of Capcom U.S.A’s producer Alex Jimenez, who states that Capcom Approached him with an Idea to make a new fighting game.
As Jimenez was a big fan of the Universal Monsters, and was responsible for Capcom obtaining the Marvel comics AND Fox Studios licenses for Capcom, suggested the idea of a fighting game that featured various famous Universal monsters of that era, Frankenstein’s monster, dracula, the wolf man and so on…. And actually approached Universal studios to obtain the rights to use those classic monsters. Unfortunately, the deal was rejected, but Jimenez continued on with the Idea of  Monster based fighting game, which he states took him about an hour to create all new original characters that were recognizable, but distinctly different from their Universal counterparts. Now the true Origins of this franchise and its characters continues to be quite a mystery. Ultimately, most fans of the series have accepted that both stories are probably true to some extent. With the game being generally very well-received by critics upon release in arcades and later home console ports, Darkstalkers would become a Capcom title that was essential in the further development of Capcom's 2-D fighter dominance. Games like X-men Children of the atom, The marvel VS capcom series, Street Fighter alpha series, and even other games Not created by capcom like Guilty gear, Melty Blood and Blazeblue were a result of the fast pace gameplay that was introduced by the Darkstalker series which further cemented Capcom as the powerhouse of 2D fighting games. Although there have been various re-releases of the first 3 games (5 if you include versions that were updated arcade games that removed/included characters or modes which were only available in Japan at the time) there has been little to no news about a New Game in the series for almost over 25 years. With characters being Relegated to cameos and costume skins for other Capcom fighting games, It seems this once celebrated franchise is basically dead, but as long as there are fans of this series, The DarkStalkers will NEVER DIE! So this is Why This STAGE of the Retro VGM Revival Hour is Resurrecting some ghoulishly amazing tracks from the various games (as well as cameos) from the DARKSTALKERS Franchise.
