Higurashi When They Cry Hou Ch. 6 Tsumihoroboshi pt. EX-2
There are no screenshots, it's all text.
When last we left off Rena was in the process of explaining to Keiichi how the Sonozaki family, and potentially the other members of the Three Families were using parasites to establish control over the people of Hinamizawa under a mystical guise.
There's much ado about how what the ancient Onigafuchi villagers thought was a god, was in fact just a foreign doctor. Buddy, let me tell you when the visual novel was going in deep on its explanation of how parasites were behind it all I became unbelievably sad. I was overcome by such an absolute despair that it very nearly killed my playthrough of the series entirely. Parasites? Parasites are the cause of all of the troubles in Hinamizawa? All the setting up the mysteries of who's behind the curse, who's calling the shots, the seemingly mystical explanations behind everything was PARASITES? I became inconsolable in my grief, that this was the explanation behind it all. After nearly a hundred hours spent playing through this series it was going to explain it all away like this?! My despondence grew, I'd been here before, I don't know if I can handle another series Danganronpa-ing me, or Bioshocking me. The very idea of continuing on after being dealt such a critical blow was agonizing to me. Why should I continue reading a series that was going to go with such a completely stupid solution for the mysteries behind it all? It's probably not healthy to put so much stock into a fictional franchise, but what can I say? This series got its hooks into me good and deep, and I was so upset by this it really put a damper on any sort of enthusiasm I had previous had going for the franchise.
I consulted with a friend, I had complained at length about some of the sillier plot developments throughout the series to them before. They offered the recommendation of stop reading multiple times. So they asked me, "am I going to just take a few days away from it?" A reasonable enough question, but I knew deep in my heart that if I took a day or two away from it that was it. I would never come back. Part of me had the notion that I would at least see the visual novel through the rest of the chapter, I was on chapter nine moving onto ten. Surely I could endure just to reach the conclusion of the chapter? But I knew if I let all the momentum I had truly and completely stop that there would be no restarting this. The flame would be smothered entirely with no hope of rekindling it.
So, I grit my teeth, and just dove back into the chapter. If nothing else I would see it this chapter to its ending. Well I've done that. twenty-six hours and ten minutes the playtime clock on GOG says. I won't lie by saying this chapter didn't do serious harm to my enjoyment of the series. It did, quite a bit. The notion that this is all an X-Files is really quite tremendously disappointing to me. The chapter makes a lot of noise about how it's ridiculous to get suckered in by the scrapbooks of Miyo Takano that these might be the reasons behind everything in the series up to this point. But then in the post-chapter TIP it then goes on to say "actually, what if?"
I feel like I could guess fairly early on in the series that there was going to be a human conspiracy element behind it. But for some reason the notion that it's all a government plot that's behind it all just really sucked all the energy I had up until now. It's not even just the parasite/alien/government conspiracy angles that annoyed me with this chapter. The constant hammering home of how you shouldn't be judged by your past actions and you can atone for your sins is all well and good, but when it makes up more than half of the later chapters writing I started to get annoyed.
There are some really interesting tidbits in this chapter, there really are. I loved the revelation that Rika has indeed been stuck in some sort of hellish time loop for at least one hundred years. I also adore the idea that the other characters stuck in this situation with her can recover their memories of alternate timelines and remember previous 1983s. Keiichi reconciling with his murder of Rena and Mion from Onikakushi was some really solid writing, and I liked it. But the constant interrogations about whether you should be held accountable for your actions in completely separate realities started to annoy me.
Also I know that it might not be the case, but the last sub-chapter or two, where Rena takes the class hostage, I have serious doubts about whether or not that section even happens. Like when Keiichi dies to zombie Mion in Watanagashi I don't doubt some version of events happens, but I don't think it's a one-to-one with the actual reality of the situation. Also the fact that despite having just resolved everything with a fucking stupid fight scene at the end it all doesn't matter in the slightest because everyone dies from the Hinamizawa Disaster anyway?
I will continue this series, deflated though I am. I remain hopeful that by the end of it Ryukishi07 will be able to bring it all back around like he did with Umineko, but I'm also keenly aware that it very well might all be just down hill from here.
Despite all this I still took over 1400 screenshots. So… I guess that's something.
I'm sorry, but the fact it's even suggesting that "you know what's really behind it all? ALIENS" is just really fucking absurd. Chapters 7 and 8 have some really fucking heavy lifting to do to right this ship and make it end in a way that's just not completely stupid bullshit. I sincerely, truly, and desperately hope that the next chapter is better than this.

Higurashi: Massacre Chapter 1
Like Time Killing, this arc opens up with Rika's murder and her asking who kills her.
Considering that's the opening to this arc, we can look forward to finding out the truth.
In Time Killing, Rika's murder is what TvTropes would call futureshadowing. We're told she died and then the rest of the arc focuses on how Akasaka met her. Though rather than the arc foreshadowing that Rika dies, it foreshadows that Akasaka didn't help her.
And if you're reading the series in the intended order, you would have also just finished Curse Killing. So the opening to Time Killing emphasizes that Rika's murder is an important thing.
This time, we're coming off of Atonement. That arc has a happy ending until it suddenly didn't and now we know why. Atonement achieved a lot, but it never made any progress to Rika's murder mystery and she was still killed.
It's been a while since Rika was killed by our unknown killer that it's understandable if we forgot about them.
Just opening up with the grand revelations about how the arcs tie together and what the underlying mechanics are.
And we finally meet Frederica Bernkastel.
And Rika's comment to Rena in Atonement chapter 10 makes a bit more sense in this context. Frederica is the accrued memories that Rika has experienced over all these timeloops while Rika is the person from each iteration. Rika didn't understand what was going on at first because she had only just died.
Now I have to wonder where Rika ends and Frederica begins throughout this story. Obviously, Frederica was the person who told Akasaka to go back to Tokyo, confronted Shion and committed suicide, told Rena about how she's existed for 100 years, and fought Rena with a broom.
But I wonder if it was Rika or Frederica who told Akasaka that she doesn't want to die and who forgave Keiichi when he remembered he'd killed Mion and Rena.
Throughout Atonement, Rika very clearly was acting like she knew what was going on so it's not like she's locked out of her memories of events.
I'm going to guess that the Rika here is who she is without the effects of the timeloops involved. When she arrived, the memories of everything started flooding in to her, but she still remained the same person. So perhaps Frederica is the part of her that cannot actually be Rika.
So I guess Rika really was the one who pleaded to Akasaka and forgave Keiichi because those are aspects of Rika, not Frederica.
Frederica seems cynical, but she's not cruel. When Rika became distressed over Curse Killing being brought up, Frederica apologized and even tried to cover up the fragment so Rika wouldn't see it.
Frederica says the people inside these fragments will never figure out their worlds are repeating, but Keiichi managed to do that. While Rika and Frederica exist consciously outside the fragments, a little piece of everyone else seems to migrate between fragments.
And now for the part you have to pay attention to. This will be on the exam.
There are three cardinal rules which govern every fragment and are common to each one.
Rule X: An unspecified person in Hinamizawa is possessed by paranoia which leads them to murder.
Rule Y: On the night of the Cotton Drifting, Jirou Tomitake and Miyo Takano are killed.
Rule Z: Everyone believes all the murders in Hinamizawa are committed by the Sonozaki family.
While discussing the rules, it's brought up how Rules Y and Z influence Rule X. When Rule Y activates, it drives up a sense of fear in the victim of Rule X and it gets amplified due to Ooishi and Takano being influenced by Rule Z.
I do want to mention that Curse Killing seems to work somewhat outside the norm though. Keiichi wasn't driven by paranoia at all. And Rule Y was entirely inconsequential to that arc. Rule Z did factor somewhat into the leadup to Keiichi deciding to commit murder, but it was only to the extent of suggesting murder as an option and all it did was fuel his decision to commit the murder because Mion outright said she couldn't do it.
Overall, Rule X is the most shaky rule. And the events from Atonement could really change things. The unspecified person is always either Keiichi, Shion, or Rena. And Keiichi could very well have broken free of Rule X and helped Rena do the same. So if Shion can be stopped, then Rule X is broken.
There's a light contradiction when they're recapping everything. Frederica says they don't know anything that happens after Rika is killed, but then she refers to when Shion learned about how her grandmother pretends to be behind the murders in Eye Opening. And that happened after Rika was killed in that arc.
back
Spoiler Discussion
Curse Killing is actually the proof that Rule X is not as absolute as it appears to be. Keiichi was not possessed by paranoia which led him to commit murder. He committed murder and that led to paranoia.
That's a big reason why the Curse-Killing scenario is the actual best chance to break the three rules gridlock. As long as Satoko can be saved without committing murder, then Rule X can be invalidated.

In Ep 8 of Higurashi during Takano Miyo's trauma flashbacks or whatever...was there supposed to be all those x's like xxxxxxx and xxxx and xxxxxxx? Like were those originally supposed to be there or was that weird censorship on the steam version? There was literally so much of it that it inadvertably started being funny to me and I couldn't take whole scenes seriously because of it which definitely wasn't intentional. At the same time I can see Ryukishi doing this on purpose because he likes to handle these subjects with care which I respect...but regardless of why it was there it definitely took me out of the scene that could have been the scariest one in all eight episodes if not for all that.

Nekodamashi-hen Eps1-4
himatsubushi-hen was the turning point of the og series, or at least was supposed to be. All the pieces are finally on the board and the central mystery behind all the noise is laid out.
Please see my ramblings on Nekodamashi-hen and comment with your own theories and interpretations!
:readmore:
Rika's resolution in Ep1 that she was only going to allow 5 more loops made me reconsider what Nekodamashi-hen's place in the plot was. This would be a longer chapter leading up to the resolution a la Matsuribayashi-hen, or maybe she would find resolve to keep fighting, which as of ep3 seems to be where it's going.
Ep1 introduces the sword that can kill loopers like Rika, and there's a little caveat with it. First is that it's missing. Second, there's the possibility of another looper.
I like to think these may be red herrings or at least not to do with the one pulling the strings. The culprit doesn't need to be a looper, as we've seen in Matsuribayashi-hen. Takano's certain victory had nothing to do with her reliving any part of her life, but rather just sheer determination to become great. The sword went missing well in advanced of the festival, at least by the time Takano and Tomitake broke into the saiguden on the festival night.
Takano's role is a puzzle however. Her MO is completely different- stealing a van alongside Tomitake instead of just injecting him and inducing L5 symptoms until he kills himself. The Yamainu are still around, but they're not creating the GHD. But Ep2 makes me think it's still her somehow involved.
Akasaka, Akane, Kimiyoshi, and even Keiichi all give their "villainous speeches" that came straight out of Document 34, which we know Miyo would use to manipulate people. Rika being at the center of the murders (Oiishi's rant) were not one that she gave in the original, but that still doesn't rule her out. Satoko's motive however and doesn't translate well if you assume every killer we saw in Nekodamashi-hen so far was a result of Takano's manipulation.
My current theory is that Document 34 was the bait used for the others but maybe another event occurred to set Satoko off. I don't think Takano is the puppet master this time even if she did play a role in rule x.
Rika's life at St Lucia's is more important than they're letting on, but what we've seen so far is red herring. I think her original death in 1988 is important but had a lot more than "oh she left Hinamizawa." I'm kinda upset that she's going through that guilt. So much trauma occurred there that she should be able to have been happy outside Hinamizawa where she suffered for so long. I'm wondering if her initial death was a call for help or at least otherwise overlooked- something that happened in 1983 caused her death in 1988. That's going to be the key.
The satoko culprit theory is what we end with on ep4, so let's turn this chessboard around:
Onidamashi-hen ends with a struggle between Rika and Satoko. The struggle between Rena and Keiichi was just filler. Original Onikakushi-hen really didn't see anything about Rika's struggle so it's a similar deal I guess.
Watadamashi-hen last saw Rika go to what appears to be Yamainu who were also planning on executing Document 34/GHD. Either Yamainu succeeded in killing Rika and the Banken prevented GHD, or potentially Satoko killed her. It's still hard to say at this point.
Whether she killed Rika or not in this chapter, Satoko's roll of the dice did play an effect in the story. Shion's focus specifically on Rika during the ladder scene rather than Satoko's cursed blood can be interpreted that at that point she was being played by Satoko. Why was she at the Sonozaki residence? Probably being confronted by Mion who saw something going on, or otherwise continued manipulation of Shion.
Tataridamashi-hen, finally, the most inexplicably strange chapter of the first three questions, is essentially a retelling of the answer arc Minagoroshi-hen rather than Tatarigoroshi-hen it was named for. What was Satoko doing in this one? She didn't have much chance to set her gameboard. But I did notice her behavior during the altercation between "Teppei" and Keiichi. It does seem rather calm. I think she induced L5 in Keiichi.
we have some sort of confirmation now that Takano is not after Rika or a GHD, but we're not sure on why: Is this a manipulation on Satoko's part, or is this something else. Memories of a past fragment does not equal a looper, as we've seen with Keiichi. Could she have woken up with a bad dream of how Matsuribayashi-hen ended? And the string of loops throughout Nekodamashi-hen, were they all a result of Satoko, or did Takano or even the Yanainu have a hand in it, as implied by the references of Document 34
I don't like invoking the Umineko witches to explain Higurashi. It's a nice metaphor though, and I'll use it here;
We're not seeing a Lambdadelta game. We don't see that certainty that we saw with Takano's game: Rika is killed by Takano, and then Hinamizawa is destroyed. Rika's deaths are always different in each game, in each loop. There is no pattern or certainty other than Rika dies.
We are seeing, however, something more like Beatrice's game. The only certainty is that everyone is dead, but the manner in which they die are so different, and the rules are much more higher level and conceptual than the og higurashi rules.
Rule X: Someone succumbs to Hinamizawa Syndrome causing the tragedy.
Rule Y: On the night of the Watanagashi, Takano and Tomitake go missing.
Rule Z: The will is strong enough to overcome the Yamainu's plan to kill Rika.
I think rule Z is the most important clue we have: Satoko is good, but is she good enough to be able to affect the actions of a town who essentially ostracized her? She has a hell of a motive but using her friends as collateral seem out of character, even if she is L5. If not her, who has the ability to overcome a certain fate so easily?
If Satoko is a looper and the culprit, how can she be stopped? Apologizing didn't do much; as it appears, she's not ready to forgive. Teppei might slow her down but not enough. Is she really possessed by Oyashiro? Why would Hanyuu do such a thing?
Please share your own thoughts. I know this was a ramble.

Some conclusions and headcanons about Miyo, because I just spent the last few hours researching Japanese adoption laws and the like. I struggled to find information on legal name changes outside of marriage and on adoption laws outside of present day, so if someone is aware of any of these conclusions being faulty, I would appreciate if you let me know! :>
Well, my starting point was a question of: Irie says that, at least in Showa 58 (1983), single people are not allowed to legally adopt children. However, Hifumi (Miyo’s grandfather) was a single adult. And at the same time, Miyo changes her name not once but twice by early adulthood.
This brings up a couple possibilities. Maybe Miyo was never legally adopted, and it’s just that the people of the orphanage didn’t want to raise a fuss and risk being exposed for their cruelty so she was allowed to live with Hifumi. I’m not sure what kinds of documents the school would require, but even if they generally would want a parent/guardian’s permission, the fact that she was an orphan means Hifumi probably could have found one that would allow it. Thus, Miyo could have changed her own legal name when she was old enough. Alternatively, she never legally changed her name, but uses Takano Miyo for research things while her legal name remains Tanashi Miyoko, which is completely allowed, and that’s what she tells people when she introduces herself so we have no reason to know it’s not her legal name.
However, I started reading about “adult adoption” in Japan. Apparently this, at least currently, entails adopting a person who is at least 15 years old. I don’t think this requires the adopter to be married, and the “adopted adult” is able to consent to it themselves (despite 15 being well before the age of majority). Thus, when she turned 15, Miyo could have consented to the adoption. At that time, Hifumi could have allowed her to legally change her name, and until that point she was going by it unofficially.
As I mentioned earlier, she changes the spelling of her name once again, after going from Tanashi Miyoko to Takano Miyo. Initially it’s 高野 (Takano), like Hifumi’s, but she later changes it to 鷹野 (Takano, different first character) for her research so people don’t think she’s doing the research out of sentimentality. There are two possibilities for this as well, which are that she has legally changed it, or that she has only changed it unofficially as an academic pseudonym while she does this research. While the “official documents” we’re shown (like with the list of deaths) list her as 鷹野三四, if memory serves, Jirou’s name is still given as Tomitake Jirou, and yet it’s brought up (by Ooishi I believe) that this is probably not his real name. (And in fact, I do believe that ジロウ -- which is written in katakana -- would be a pretty unusual name for that time period. Correct me if I’m wrong, though.)
The one motivation for her to legally change the spelling of her last name is that when she signs legal documents, she would presumably still be using 高野 if she hadn’t legally changed it to 鷹野. However, there’s little reason for the academics to see her legal documents -- until the Irie Institution and all that gets started, but both Koizumi and Nomura (who are the ones pulling the strings in ensuring she has funding and all that, at varying times) are already aware of her having been adopted by him, so there’s not much point in trying to hide that.
As for how Nomura creepily found out about her adoption, it actually wouldn’t have been that hard if Miyo had been legally adopted (which is part of why I think she was, when she was 15). All she would have to do is look into Miyo’s family registry (koseki). (Koseki were a thing since the Meiji Era, so before Showa.) Creepy, but entirely possible. I don’t know if the average person can march in and look at a random person’s koseki, but certainly with Nomura’s connections we can assume she would be able to pull it off.
Incidentally, regarding years. Higurashi takes place primarily in Showa 58 (1983), as is mentioned many times. Miyo’s age is given as “3X” (in the same way the club members’ are given as X or 1X) iirc, meaning she would have been born somewhere between Showa 18 (1943) to Showa 28 (1953). WWII ended in Showa 20 (1945), and it seems she was born after the war. She was probably 8-10 when she was adopted (keeping in mind Rika and Satoko are presumably 9, with their ages given as X, and she seems to be roughly the same age), so she would probably have been adopted somewhere Showa 35 (1960) give or take a few years.

Alright, anime characters by their very nature are usually a bit strange. They are after all living in the anime universe and not the real world. That said, there are some characters that take being a bit peculiar to all new levels of strange. Sometimes there’s a really good reason for their actions (childhood trauma, etc), and other times they just like doing what they do. So today’s top 5, I’m focussing on my favourite top 5 strange characters. This list is kind of similar to my list on characters who weren’t all there but on that list I went more with characters who were a bit spacey and oblivious rather than characters who clearly have direction its just weird what direction they’ve chosen.
Please Note: There are some plot spoilers below if you read the descriptions.
Honourable mentions this week go to Oculus from Death Parade and Misaki Mei from Another.
Number 5: Koko Hekmatyar from Jormangand
Koko is an arms dealer. She’s tough and almost impossible to phase even if you point a gun directly at her face. That said, she’s also more than a little bit odd. She’s got a strange moral code and at times her decisions about who to deal with and who to walk away from seems fairly arbitrary. Also, after spending a lot of her childhood on battlefields she has picked up one very strange habit after she was told by one of her body guards she should always be smiling. All and all, Koko is a character I love, but the girl is strange.
Number 4: Kagerou Shoukin from Inu X Boku
This guy sees everything in the world through the classification of either being an S (sadist) or an M (masochist) and he goes to great lengths to explain his reasons and logic to those around him even when they tell him they don’t care. Even a Lazy Susan in a Chinese restaurant doesn’t escape classification. Kagerou is one seriously annoying character, but he does have style and you certainly can’t accuse him of not being true to who he is.
Number 3: Miyo Takano from Higurashi
Miyo’s strangeness is really entirely understandable given the horrific experiences she had at the orphanage as a child, but that doesn’t excuse her decision to kill an innocent child and then massacre an entire village just to prove that her adopted father’s research was actually right all along. You do have to admire her dedication to the long term plan and she’s certainly tried to account for all the loose ends. If not for time looping and the power of friendship, she’d have definitely succeeded and she did many, many times before she was finally defeated.
Number 2: Akito Sohma from Fruits Basket
Alright, if you just watch the anime, Akito is just a bully and a nutjob. Violent temper tantrums, control issues, and outright torture of younger family members litter the scenes Akito appear in. There’s some attempt to justify this extreme personality in the manga, though while it helps you to see why Akito is so crazy it doesn’t really justify Akito’s actions given for the most part this is a case of misplaced anger. A tragic figure through and through, there’s something compelling about Akito so that even when you hate what Akito is doing, you can’t really look away.
Number 1: Ladd Russo and Claire Stanfield from Baccano
I couldn’t really split these two. In a show full of strange and extreme characters with strange and extreme personalities, these two still managed to distinguish themselves as being severely unhinged and yet fantastic fun to watch. Their show down on top of the train was one of the highlights of an anime I loved through and through. They are also oddly similar though Claire is clearly the more refined. Neither is squeamish or has an issue with blood and they both wholly believe in their abilities and that their actions and justified. They also severely lack empathy for pretty much anyone else except their chosen lady. All and all, these two guys are awesome to watch on screen but I would never, ever want to meet anyone like them.
Over to you: Who is your favourite strange anime character?
Thanks for reading.
