Ahh, Hinata!!! I love writing my girlies getting the tickles they deserve! I've gotcha covered, friend!

XOXO- “Hey, do you like raspberries?”

“Takemitchi? Are you still awake?”

Said man certainly was not; or at least- he didn’t want to be. Currently he was laying with his head in his girlfriend’s lap, hands folded over his full belly after the bento lunch picnic she made for them. Everything from the temperature of the day to Hinata’s sweet smelling perfume left him in a state of content he never wanted to leave. “Maybe.”

Something round and firm pressed against his lips. When he opened his mouth, a blueberry was dropped in. “Mm, those are good. More please.”

“Hehe, you’re too cute.” Hinata laughed as she fed him, picking what she hoped to be the sweetest of berries. Even when a few were off, Takemitchi wasn’t complaining.

A thought crossed his mind then. “Hinata…can I ask you something?”

“Hm?” She paused, her hand hovering over his mouth with another berry. He popped it in his mouth with a grin, knowing full well his teeth probably looked purple.

“Do you like raspberries?”

“Hm…sometimes, yeah. But I didn’t bring any.” She tilted her head at him, unknowingly falling for his trap.

“No worries; I brought plenty for you!” With a burst of strength, he twisted and pressed his face against her stomach. Nuzzling her shirt out of the way, be took a breath and blew.

PFFFFFT!

“AH! Tahahahkemihihihitchi!” She squealed, doubling over across him as she giggled, her laughing fits growing with each blow. “Dohoohhoohn’t! That wahahahhas uuhuhuhunfahhahahahir!”

“It’s very fair! You always tickle me- now I get to tickle you back!” He laughed with her, giving her one last blow before attacking her hips with tickly fingers, making her squeal and wiggle against him. Halfway in her lap, he effectively trapped her. “Coochie coochie coo, Hina!”

“Ahehahahahahahaha! Tahhahakemihihihihitchi! Pleahhahahhse!” She pulled at his shirt, halfheartedly punching at his shoulders as she tittered against him. “Ohohohohokay, Ihihihih’ve hahahahd enohohohohugh!”

Laughing, Takemitchi pulled away, taking in Hinata’s flushed cheeks and breathless smile with fond eyes. “Heh, you’re cute when you’re all red like that. Like a-”

“Raspberry?” Hinata finished, narrowing her eyes playfully. He snickered, burying his face in her lap once more with a happy sigh. “You know I’m gonna get you back, right?”

“Hmm.” He hummed, fully aware. Instead of tickly fingers though, he felt her press her lips against his. They tasted like berries.

The end of an era

Takazuru 孝鶴 from Kyoto-Gion Kobu has retired this month, December 2024. She debuted in 1982 and was the last member of the 孝 (taka) naming line, whose home was the Kaida 貝田 Okiya (closed 2013). The first documented member of this naming line was Takae 孝江, debuted around 1951. She was the last Okasan of Kaida and maybe the Okiya's founder. The last new addition was Takahina 孝ひな, debuted in 2008. Two girls who were Maiko in Kaida later went to become Geisha in Shinbashi: Takacho 孝蝶 (1998-2004) became Kuniryu くに龍 (2009-19). Takahiro 孝比呂 (2005-08) became Kozakura 小桜 (2009).

Some maiko do leave to get married too, especially if they're leaving at the end of their apprenticeship. I believe Mameteru and Takahina (and possibly Fukunae) are examples :)

You’re right with that! It has become much rarer now, but some Maiko do retire to get married as well. Maiko are ages 20 to 22 when they retire, so they are adults already and much older than they often appear to be. When looking at Maiko Tomitsuyu, most people probably wouldn’t think that she’s 21 already, for example.

I haven’t heard anything about what Fukunae went on to do, but it’s not impossible, of course. I also couldn’t think of any Maiko who retired to get married for sure, so I didn’t add to the answer from yesterday.Until a few decades ago, it was completely normal and also usually expected for girls and young women to get married and have children early, and it was usually their only way of achieving financial stability and status. Of course, the average man was also much younger when entering his first marriage back then. People also just died much earlier back then on average, so you kind of had to be quick ^^’.Before WWII and I’d say even for about three decades after that, it was considered completely normal for a girl to get married after an apprenticeship. Before WWII, a Maiko usually completed her apprenticeship at ages 16 to 18, after that, it was (and still is) 20 or 21.

The average age for marrying and also for having children has significantly risen in the past decades in Japan, as in most countries around the world, especially industrialized nations. In 2013, the average age for first marriage in Japan was 29.3 years for women and 30.9 years for men, and it’s still rising a bit. Geiko Makino was either 25 or 26 when she retired this summer, so she was a few years below average, and Geiko Katsuya should be either 31 or 32, so she is a few years above average. I can’t think of any other Geiko who left to get married of the top of my head, but I think it would be interesting to see how old they were on average ^^.

Aside from Kanoyuri, who else are your favorite geimaiko, active or retired? Some of mine include Kikuyu, Mamechika (Tama), and Tomitsuyu.

They’re all written on the same tab, but my favorites include Kotoha, Katsue (Kamishichiken), Satsuki, Mameroku, Naosome, Fukuai, and Hisano for geiko. As for maiko, they’re Ichiaya, Umechie, Fukuna, Fumitama, Kotomi, Tomitsuyu, Satoryū, and Takahina.
