Alright, taking a breather from my Eclipse posts to handle a couple things! (Long post!)
1) New ep of Kabe Koji: LOVELY. Ooooooh, the sloooooooowww burn. Mamocchi’s emotion at touching Issei and inspiring him. Issei’s slow growth into leadership and determination. These characters are taking their time with showing their facets. I’m really loving it.
2) Japanese Twitter (and English Twitter reporting on doramas) have noted that the show Silent is quite popular right now in Japan, so I’m picking it up on Viki. Watched the first episode last night, and it is just lovely, reflective of a lot of what I like about doramas and Japanese literature. The pace is very much akin to Shinya Shokudo -- it takes its time with telling its story. It focuses on a young woman who is about to move in with her boyfriend, a high school friend. But she runs into another high school classmate -- her ex-boyfriend, who had suddenly dumped her after graduation. While she thought she had been dumped for another woman, her ex-boyfriend had actually lost his hearing. I’m only through episode one, and there are three on Viki so far, but I’m going to dive into this -- I feel like the pace and storyline are super calming, and the acting is wonderful so far. The lead actress is Kawaguchi Haruna, who I haven’t watched before, but she’s splendid.
I’m so appreciating the increase in dramas that feature characters with disabilities in lead or prominent roles -- Drive My Car, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and now (for me) Silent. I’m only through episode one, but it seems like this art is being respectfully and deeply done. It’s a nice foil to the intensity of The Eclipse, and I think I’m picking up Big Dragon once The Eclipse is over, so considering how insane Big Dragon looks, I’ll need a calmer dorama to balance things out!
3) OMG, I am FINALLY publishing this review: Three Star Bar in Nishi Ogikubo, yay!
I finished this cute mid-season 2021 dorama much later than I expected; I started it last month, and had to pause while my partner had COVID. But this six-episode series was otherwise a quick watch. I’m going to offer some gentle criticism, but this show did help me cross another dorama off my Machida Keita rabbithole list.
The show focused on three former high school classmates, now adults, who take over the bar of the deceased grandfather of one of the classmates. The bar focuses on classic cocktails and only serves canned food (somewhat of a common occurrence in shows about food in Japan). Machida as Amamiya is a former salaryman; Fujiwara Kisetsu as Nakauchi is a former high-end chef who transforms the canned foods into unique dishes, and Morisaki Win as Kobayashi is a struggling author and current owner of the bar.
So I think that this dorama would have actually been slightly better if it had been a fall or early winter dorama, which sounds kinda of weird, but hear me out: the three main actors are all amazing in their own right -- we’ve seen them in other works that totally showcased their acting chops.
[Having now watched a couple Machida works, and with more on my list, I’m really getting convinced that Cherry Magic was his prime acting showcase of his career so far. Watching Teppachi! was fine, shrugs, and Super Rich is going along (Akaso Eiji outacts Machida in Super Rich), but those shows aren’t challenging, or like, dramatic. Live Like a Girl, Alice in Borderland, that taiga he was in, and probably some movies I’m missing, may prove me wrong, but I gotta watch them first before I judge. I think we were deeply spoiled by the actual quality of the filming and writing of CM, regardless of its BL status, for both Machida and Akaso.]
Anyway, I think that if Three Star Bar were a fall or early winter show, it may have been written with a little more depth -- instead, I think it served as a mid-season quick filler for MBS. I think the three guys (sparkles sparkles, they were all cast together for a reason) were ultimately underutilized, and the customer focal points of each episode were slightly weak and hyperbolized. There was a lot of potential -- the dorama was sweet, but the writing was on the edge of something much more complicated and interesting that didn’t quite get there.
I wrote earlier that episode two punched me in the gut -- it was an episode about an actress-turned-mother who was struggling with balancing her career and raising her child. Lord, can I relate.
So I think that episode could have really gone places! Japan has deeply entrenched issues with supporting career women who become mothers. I think the episode documented the actress’s struggles well. But the guys were left to respond kind of with....not a lot. The actress’s husband comes to the bar and says, “we’ll manage.” Like, cool, but give us more. What I wanted to see was how the husband would compromise himself and his family’s structure to accommodate his wife’s career -- it wouldn’t have taken too much more writing to get to that point. Or the guys talking about their own views of this problem more deeply.
I think I’m being critical enough of this show because the potential for human revelations in the context of being alone in a quiet bar are so high. I’m working out in my head a separate meditation on the beauty of eating and drinking alone, and how Japan handles this so beautifully in their many shows about the topic. I really wanted Three Star Bar to join those ranks, but ultimately, the dorama was designed to tell a different story.
For the sake of that different story -- getting three cute classmates together to figure out their early mid-life crises as a team -- it was a sweet show, especially the last episode, with an ex-pat coming back home to Japan to discover her father’s life in the old bar with Kobayashi’s grandfather. I truly do love shows that showcase food and cocktails, and honestly, I think Machida as a bartender did the best he could with what he was given from a writing perspective.
And Amamiya’s and Kobayashi’s life revelations at the end were satisfying. Amamiya’s character was written as a little milquetoast, but -- the guy clearly need to move away from society’s demands that he turn into a run-of-the-mill salaryman. By finding his life in the bar and living creatively, Amamiya took a risk that a man like himself would have otherwise likely struggled to accept. The true winner of this show, in my opinion, was Morisaki Win as Kobayashi. His Kobayashi was the perfect brooding foil to Amamiya’s cheerfulness, and I think Kobayashi’s revelatory story of conquering writer’s block did nail what a quiet bar inspires -- aloneness can oftentimes bring light to darkness.
I would recommend this as a quick watch! If you LOVE shows about people sitting at bars and working out their very deep issues, Shinya Shokudo is the dorama for that; but Three Star Bar is perfect for a fast binge. AND, SWEETLY: two cute future BL cameos are in this, with Nishigaki Sho as a young Amamiya, and Matsuoka Koudai from beloved Kabe Koji as a fellow chef. Nishigaki playing a young Amamiya was particularly cute and made me giggle; I wonder what Minato Akira/Rokkaku would have thought.

Should I scream and review some taiga doramas here?
Cuz I feel bit uncomfortable in twitter lately. So, I gonna scream here more than on my main twitter account.
Of course, not spoiler free, hehe. Also I'd like to get some moots or passionate soulmate to crazy over historical figures and their actors. Anyway, my favourite era is Sengoku, Bakumatsu, and Meiji (with a bit of Taisho) era, but now my braincells stuck in Bakumatsu tho.
thanks for segodon, hana moyu, ryomaden, yae no sakura, and seiten wo tsuke

[DL] Dorama Yowamushi Pedal Season 2 (HD Streaming from Pandora TV)
Tumblr media
Hi, I was searching for pedadora HD download link because my cheap recorder was broken so I couldn’t record from WakuWakuJapan channel 😂😂😂 Well even tho I could, it wouldn’t be in really high quality tho. Moreover, it’d be Indo-subbed 😂😂😂
So I was searching and found it on Pandora TV streaming site. I reuploaded it to MEGA so it’d be more accessible, since HD streaming on Pandora TV is only for premium subscribers.
Remember : the only true HD quality is only the 1st episode. The rest are so-so.
Here we go : ❤click here❤

Tumblr media
Padahl Ryo masih under 30s santai dikit lah Ryo 😆😆.

So what I have been up to recently.
Tumblr media
I have been reading Far Away Bird recently about Theodora the wife of Justinian. It was a theme and era I haven‘t read any novels about so far thus it was a change from the many mythological retellings, Roman era novels or Tudor novels I read most of the time. Since Theodora‘s life is a from rags to riches story I think it‘s always interesting to see how this affects the surroundings.
Tumblr media
The other book I have been reading was Jesus eine Weltgeschichte (Jesus a World History). It was a pure cover buy since I thought that the juxtaposing of a crown with the crown of thorns is brilliant. The essays in it were well written as well. It was kinda written like a lens: at first writing about the world before Jesus then for some chapters focusing on his character and surroundings and then zooming out again and focusing on the after effects. I have also put a novel on my watch list: Ariadne by Jennifer Saint.
Tumblr media
US Cover
Tumblr media
UK Cover When I see Greek mythology retelling I usually can‘t refuse to read a book. It‘s pitched for fans of Madeline Miller‘s Circe or Pat Barker‘s Silence of the Girls. It‘s of course centered on Ariadne helping out Theseus against the Minotaur, being left behind at Naxos and ending up with Dionysus. Her sister Phaedra will also be a main character. It will also be based on Ariadne‘s letter to Theseus in Ovid’s Heroides.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was also sorta reminded of June Brindel‘s two novels Ariadne and Phaedra when reading the summary. These two books follow the theory that the Minotaur story represents the triumph of main land Greece over the Minoan/Cretan culture and predominance (the Minoan culture historically seems to have vanished more and more after natural catastrophes). I wonder if lesser known stories about Ariadne will be included like her being petrified by Perseus with Medusa‘s head for example. As for Taiga dorama: Due to the Covid break at the moment I took a break from Kirin ga Kuru since it was hard getting back into the series again after several weeks.
Tumblr media
I am following news about the new Genpai War Taiga from 2022 though. Kamakura-dono no 13 nin As the title suggests it will be about people in Yoritomo‘s surroundings. The main character is Hojo Yoshitoki the younger brother of Yoritomo‘s wife Masako.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically it‘s like a remake of Kusa Moeru which was centered on Masako but now switching to her brother Yoshitoki thus most characters which appear in Kusa Moeru will also appear in Kamakura-dono no 13 nin. Hojo Tokimasa the power hungry father of the Hojo siblings. Ohime the daughter of Yoritomo and Masako who hates her father due to the Yoshitaka incident. Yoriie the son of Yoritomo and Masako who also has much drama. Wada Yoshimori and Hatakeyama Shigetada. Noriyori whom Yoritomo also began to mistrust. And of course Yoshitsune. I am glad that Suda Masaki was chosen I think that he will play a more well-rounded Yoshitsune than the usual depictions. There is at least much content for that time frame and Masako is a very prominent female character. Genpai War Taiga were also always good so far. I think what I would really like regarding the Genpai War though would be a manga or novelization or movie about the relationship between Kiso Yoshinaka and Imai Kanehira. I read the Heike Monogatari as a teen barely knowing anything about the main characters (with the exception of Yoshitsune and Yoritomo). When I read it the most touching, deepest and memorable relationship to me was the relationship between Yoshinaka and Imai.

Garish Room #28 [2017 ver. member A to Z case of Aoi] part 1
Tumblr media
- Actor (favorite actor / actress, own acting ability)
Aoi: If I name, for example, Satomi Ishihara, it will be a little strange, huh? *laughs* She is very pretty, and her acting is quite good. The Doramas with her are very interesting. Next, if we're talking about actors... This year I first watched all the releases of the "Taiga" series.  [*Big River" is a long historical series, which shows NHK throughout the year. It has been broadcast since 1963]. Initially, I thought that I'd only watch the first three episodes, but it turned out to be so interesting that I was seized by this. In this regard, I believe that Kusakari Masao is the best among the actors.  He's insanely cool.  I even thought that I want to become as magnanimous as he is.  What about my acting?  It's no good. To be yourself and completely reincarnate in someone else is two huge differences.
- Baby (do you often behave like a child)
Aoi: I often think about it. So honestly I can't say "yes". From time to time, I really want to intervene into someone's conversation with emotional words like: "Eh? Why?" And this is very childish. * laughs * And I often think to myself "Oh, it's so awkward."  But there's nothing to be done about it, because I have such a character.  I realized this already when I arrived in Tokyo. The people of Kanto region don't understand my jokes at all. *laughs* Hmm, maybe nobody at home could understand me too. * laughs*  Sometimes, others say: “You are unbearable”, but in fact, even then the ambience around me is very pleasant.  But, even if they don’t fully understand these jokes, then parry with words like "Okay, okay, it's alright" or "Hey man, what makes you so angry?".
- Christmas (memories of christmas)
Aoi:  Nothing special. Everything is too ordinary, and there is nothing to tell.
- Danger (it was dangerous!)
Aoi:  In early December, I was poisoned for the first time by oysters. Despite the fact that I really like oysters, I thought I would die. I heard that such a poisoning is terrible, but it was really terrible. At first I thought, "How can It fever from poisoning?", but then I thought, "What if this is the moment of my death?". *laughs*  Somehow I reconciled to this,  my body was weak, and I thought that this is how death comes. And, then, during the tour, I was struggling to think about life as much as possible. After all, they [* about Shinigami?] come unexpectedly, don’t they?
- Emergency (things you think you need to do now, as soon as possible)
Aoi:  General cleaning. Anyway if I don't clean the bathroom, I won't be happy. If we talk about cleaning in the bathroom, it needs to be done throughout the year, so then you don't need to polish it to shine. But even if I do this, I still have to clear the drains several times during the year. And if I do not do it at once, I will have to do this for a year, for my health. It'll seem to me that everything bad is still in my body. So I must do this as soon as possible.  Therefore, by the end of the year (2016), my plans must be implemented. Probably I will do it right tomorrow. *laughs*
- Fashion (preferences in style)
Aoi:  No preference. The other day, I went out with a backpack from the collection of our goods. And since I never wore this backpack on my shoulders, so I put it to put on wild. When Ruki saw this, he only said, "This is wrong way". So I looked like a Yankee who carried a backpack on elongated straps. * laughs * But in fact, I have no interest to such a fashion. *laughs *
- Ghibli (Ghibli's favorite works)
Aoi:  I prefer the works of Pixar. Therefore ... I can not single out anything *laughs*
- Health (what do you pay special attention in the field of health)
Aoi:  Every day I drank up to two cans of beer. The first thirteen years in the group I was constantly slightly drunk, and because of this, I began to gain of weight. Therefore, now I don't eat in the evenings and have reduced the volume of consumed alcohol. And I'm glad with the fact that I started taking care of my health. I stopped drinking and overeating.
- Immorality (about treasons, which became a hot topic in 2016)
Aoi:  I do not think about people who think that it's worth it. Apparently, they can afford such a way of life. Perhaps this is related to money. But ... all this is not good, right?  But even on television, everyone does it.  And they do not limit themselves in anything.  If this is true, then I would prefer to watch only local news and reviews on seasonal food.
- Junk (unnecessary things at home)
Aoi:  Cables? *laughs*  After I stop using them, I don’t throw them away, so there are a lot of in the bag.  And although I don’t use them for anything anymore... I do not understand how I can take them and throw away.  They are all called "What kind of adapter is this?".
- Kimi no Na Wa (the film "Your name")
Aoi:  Of course I didn’t watch... Since the cross-promotion of soundtracks, with the help of active advertising and various advertising  cooperations, in all available ways they get such a hit. This how I can explain the growing popularity of this story.
- Love (the importance that love occupies in your life)
Aoi:  It takes about 2% of my entire life. What is called love is the need to share your time with someone else, right? I love only one person. [* himself? LOL]
