Taddeo Zuccari (Italian, 1529–1566) Pietà with torchbearers, c.1560-66
Born in Urbino, the painter is considered the main representative of Italian Mannerism. He was Federico”Ts older brother, went to Rome aged 14 and soon became a very popular artist with wealthy clients and was able to establish his own business as a fresco painter. He received commissions from Pope Julius III and Paul VI together with Prospero Fontana, was active in the Villa Giulia and was allowed to paint the representative rooms in the Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola, which can probably be considered his principal work. He also decorated the Sala dei Fasti in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome. Zuccari attained a fortune which allowed him to build a palace in Rome. Due to his importance, he was buried near Raphael’s tomb in the Pantheon in Rome.
There are several other versions of the present work, for example in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (canvas, 232 x 142 cm.) or in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, Urbino (281 x 154 cm., image no. FAB60351). Upon closer examination, certain aspects suggest that the work was not fully completed before Zuccari’s death in 1666. When giving the painting a title, the wax candles were misunderstood on various occasions as “Attributes of the Passion of Christ”. The Farnese cardinal is said to have conveyed this idea for the depiction with candles to the painter. The famous biographer Giorgio Vasari already mentioned the Zuccari. The importance of the painting is also demonstrated by its distribution as a copperplate engraving.
The painting is considered a protected Italian cultural asset and is located in Italy.

. Nel 1889 il castello viene acquistato da D.Elisabetta Frield, moglie del Principe Salvatore Brancaccio, i quali contribuirono in modo significativo all'ampliamento e all'ammodernamento, dandogli la grandiosità che oggi lo contraddistingue. #castelliditalia #lazio #roma #italia #italy #travel #castellobrancaccio #brancaccio #sangregoriodasassola #history #historia #sunset #sunrise #ambiente #cartolina #postcard #postcardfromitaly #dimorastorica #dimoraresidenziale #castello #castelli #castle #castles #chateau #chateaux #castillo #castillos #borgo #borghi #borghiitaliani https://www.instagram.com/p/CSqTaQnI8Hl4oio52uTvjHVLXKjBEmgp-mNeAE0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Calle Ponte Rotto was a misshapen laneway thanks to the poor posture of the centuries-old buildings that flanked it. Overhead, Odile had once spotted neighbours dangling out of their windows to test if they might be able to kiss across the modest breadth of the alley (they’d managed it, to cheerful applause). The café was literally a hole in the wall, a window cut out to reveal a kitchen (if so generous a term could be applied) that was not even half the size of Odile’s bedroom. There was a small stove  and a shelf where the bread and pastries were set, and that was about it. There wasn't even a sign over the serving window, the proper name of the establishment lost to history. One of the older patrons had once confided that the bar was simply called Nataniele’s, after the owner… or the owner’s father. Or perhaps their names were the same. It was no matter—the coffee was good, the prices low, the service quick. The location meant that no one too snooty and respectable was ever caught dead elbowing their way to the bar, which Odile appreciated. It meant there was no chance of bumping into a client or the likes of Carlo Zuccari on her way to the studio.
Taddeo was already standing at the bar, spotting her just as he raised his espresso to his lips. He waved her over and she picked up her pace slightly, dodging a man who had finished his coffee and was heading back to the street, scraping her painter’s board against the side of the alley in the process. Taddeo winced.
“It’s fine,” she said, wedging herself in beside him. It wasn’t difficult for the little coffee spot to get crowded, for obvious reasons. The bar could perhaps fit three patrons abreast before things got a bit claustrophobic. She gave a familiar nod to the owner and flashed two fingers. “Doppio, please! And a cornetto, please.”

(Leiden, 1556 - Bruselas, 1629)
No. 124.
No. 221.
