You know what goes great on top of a permanent magnet DC brush motor/generator? Another one!

No seriously, this appendage under the top dust cover is a small DC generator for measuring the motor's speed. The white metal ring under the brush holders contains four permanent magnets and *look at that adorable tiny armature*.

Out of curiosity and while carefully monitoring the current level, I applied DC voltage to the little tach generator, and at about 20vdc it drew about 90 milliamps and did indeed start turning the shaft.

I don't really know what voltage or speed the motor is rated for, but applying 1vdc to the main terminals (behind the externally visible round brush holders) makes it turn slowly and stopping the shaft by hand gives a locked rotor amperage of about 1.1. At 2 volts it's no longer possible to stop the shaft with my fingers, it's just got silly levels of torque.
