Is Covid-19 the Silver Bullet for a Stable Climate?
This article was originally published on Medium.
By Brad Zarnett
Something changed recently when I saw a map comparing the air over China before and after the country went into lockdown in an attempt to contain the Covid-19 Coronavirus. Slowly over the course of a week, I began to see the issue of climate change in a whole new light.
This might sound radical but please hear me out.
The path towards a stable climate will need to run through some kind of economic collapse. It will have nothing to do with a more sustainable business model or more progressive government action - both of those approaches have failed. Let’s face it - people just don’t feel the urgency to change how they live their lives and government is too weak and/or corrupt to lead the way.
Wait - stop with this negativity!
Perhaps you believe that we’ll find a technological fix like carbon capture or maybe you're a believer in the ability of solar, wind, tidal and algae as a basket of renewable solutions. Or maybe you think that Greta’s movement will force the hand of government to finally take the strong steps that we need. You might be right...maybe...maybe not. But I think late at night when we’re alone with our thoughts, we can see the writing on the wall. Our efforts for the last 30 years have failed and it’s no wonder - we’ve been pressing the wrong “change” button.
Change….Never Came
Climate change is a slow motion crisis - perfectly suited for politicians to kick down the road. To reduce emissions by the amount set out by scientists in the IPCC report requires a massive shrinking of the fossil fuel sector and a complete rethink as to how we conduct business. The amount of economic instability and job loss that this would create would be unprecedented. It’s political suicide - voters don’t support politicians who take their jobs for a crisis that’s decades in the future.
In hindsight, meaningful change was never going to happen before the crisis hit - besides being a political loser - the status quo is a massive windfall for the campaign-supporting super rich and corporate elite who have a vested interest in maintaining the climate plundering system. So politicians take the middle road - they talk about being environmental champions, they pretend to take strong actions, they sign the Paris Accords (which is nothing more than “immunity via collective failure”), and nothing of consequence happens.
A Strong Economy
Politicians say a lot of things about climate change but when you look at their actions the message is clear - the economy comes first. According to the neoliberal script, the best way to achieve this is by leaving business alone and not burdening it with a lot of pesky regulations. Efforts towards reducing environmental or social harm are encouraged as voluntary measures without regulations and of course, there are few if any penalties for non-compliance. All the actors in this performance are perfectly aligned to keep the current system in place. In this way, economic disruption is kept to a minimum, the elite continue to line their pockets, jobs are protected and voters continue to elect weak and visionless politicians - just like the ones we currently have. And of course, the environment pays the price.
Change Needs a Jolt
For real change to occur there needs to be a trigger, something has to jolt us out of our familiar ways. Something has to alter our expectations about what the future will look like if we follow our current path. That is to say, we perceive a greater level of risk with our old behaviour as compared to trying something new. And that’s where a perfect dose of fear comes into the equation - that’s the activation button for us to collectively realize that it’s time to take the medicine that science tells us is necessary.
Our current approach to fighting for a stable climate isn't working. Our brains just don’t seem to grasp the gravity of this slow motion crisis. We need to engage a more primal response. We need to engage our limbic system so that it feels the urgency, that the danger is imminent and not 20, 50 or 100 years into the future. This is what we’ve been missing all along.
The Dream is Ending
Something has happened in the last two months that changes everything. A tiny virus has landed right in the middle of our green business fantasy - the one where a smooth transition to a sustainable economy is well within our grasp. Where we just need to make more eco-friendly purchases and force companies to meet that “green demand”...along with a few small behavioural changes like carrying a reusable coffee mug, riding a bike to work or going vegan.
We’ll that dream is coming to an end - this virus is about to shed light on a failed strategy that has persisted for far too long. Could this be the trigger that we’ve needed that will finally force us to get our emissions under control? Time will tell but as of now, as tragic as it is, this horrible virus seems to be the best chance we have to avert a climate disaster.
Covid-19 Coronavirus
Covid-19 is like nature reasserting itself, turning on a switch that says enough is enough - if you won’t make the economic system more climate friendly then we’ll just shut the whole thing down. And we won’t make the same mistakes you did like trying to use the greed of a predatory banking system to achieve positive results or by encouraging a movement to divest from fossil fuels. Our approach will achieve success by shutting down something even more fundamental to the economy than money or oil - people.
What makes Covid-19 so effective is that it captured our attention using fear. It’s forcing everyone on the planet to rethink and adjust to something that we never really thought about - how we interact with other people and how important those interactions are to the global economy. This is something that the climate movement was never able to achieve - at an individual level, everyone feeling the urgency to change their ways.
Tragic But Effective?
Now, if this sounds like a harsh way to address climate change - that’s because it is. It’s tragic that people are dying and it could get much worse. According to Julia Grant an infectious disease epidemiologist, “it’s likely that people you know will die from Covid-19". But we always knew that climate change was going to be disruptive and take millions of lives - we just thought that it was going to happen at some distant point in the future under someone else’s watch. Our planet’s collective decision to “kick the can down the road” has all but ensured that our response to climate change will not be on our timeline - we're going to let nature decide.
I guess the most important question is - do you believe the science about what will happen to our planet if we continue to let the climate unravel? If you don’t then I’m shocked that you read this far and if you do, then you need to take this model for change seriously and reflect on all of the failures that have led us to this point.
Yes, But The Economy
We’ve tried everything we know on how to reduce emissions while expanding the economy and we have little to show for it. But we won’t likely have to face our failure anytime soon as the consequences of our inaction won’t be felt for many years to come.
An “economy first” approach with Covid-19 is different - the results of this strategy have revealed themselves in near real-time. There were many experts who said at the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak that it was vital to contain the illness and restrict air travel but those warnings were ignored in favour of keeping the economy healthy - and of course now it’s too late. We are in the midst of a pandemic and our economy is showing it’s fragility. The very thing that we tried to protect is now under attack and lives are being lost at an alarming rate.
Whether we're talking about Covid-19 or Climate Change the similarities of an “economy first” approach are striking. We can likely guess that it won’t go well in the case of climate change but we now have a live example of how this strategy works when governments choose the economy over a mass mobilization designed to protect human wellbeing.
The Heart of the Problem
What makes Covid-19 so fascinating is that you don’t need to convince anyone to do things differently - the fear component takes care of that and new behaviours become the norm. And when that happens the rest of the pieces fall into place. Social distancing begins, the economy can’t function properly and emissions drop.
After so many years of playing by the rules of a climate plundering economy - Covid-19 comes on the scene and smashes them all. Trying to befriend and collaborate with those who are causing the harm has got us nowhere and wasted decades. Like a heat seeking missile - Covid-19 get’s directly to the source of the problem - our economic system - and it begins to dismantle it.
A New Approach?
We have a big problem and it's not emissions. It's not plastic, it’s not deforestation, it’s not species and biodiversity loss - it’s the way we’ve chosen to run our society, to conduct business and to measure progress. Maybe ignoring biodiversity loss, ecosystem health and general human wellness, in favour of a healthy stock market was the wrong choice. The economic system that we use to run the planet is a disaster. It’s time to put our focus directly where it belongs.
If you believe in science then you need to take this model for change seriously. Nothing else has worked and the clock is ticking. ___________

Jeep Gladiator Gets Six Moab Easter Safari Concepts
via IFTTT Jeep Gladiator Gets Six Moab Easter Safari Concepts Jeep’s 2019 Moab Easter Safari lineup is an all-pickup affair, with the off-road specialist bringing six custom-built concepts to the annual event that takes place in Moab, Utah (April 13-21). All six concepts are based on the all-new Gladiator pickup truck. Besides the M-715 Five-Quarter restomod, all other concepts seem to be ready for production with the right amount of Mopar goodies. Whether they’ll make it to production or not it depends on Jeep and the public reception. All Gladiator-based concepts feature the standard model’s 3.6-liter engine albeit with a performance bump courtesy of a Jeep Performance Parts cold-air intake. So, without further ado, here’s what each Jeep pickup concept is about. 1. J6: does it preview a Gladiator single cab? We start off with the J6 Concept, which envisions what a single-cab version of the Gladiator could look like. It mixes the classic Jeep truck styling of the late 1970s with prototype and production Jeep Performance Parts from Mopar with spectacular results. 2. Jeep Wayout: the Gladiator for overlanding enthusiasts This concept envisions an overland version of the all-new Gladiator that comes with a full roof-top tent and custom canopy, custom bed rack with an integrated ladder, two custom-fit auxiliary fuel tanks, ARB onboard air system, and more. The roof-top tent is said to sleep two adults comfortably, while the 270-degree awning with amber LED task lighting helps travelers set up camp. The concept also features a new Gator Green color that will be available on production Gladiator models, a Jeep Performance Parts two-inch lift kit for more ground clearance, and 17-inch steel wheels shod with 37-inch mud-terrain tires. Other off-road upgrades include a 12,000-lb (5,443-kg) Warn winch and Jeep Performance Parts snorkel. 3. JT Scrambler: the nostalgic Gladiator The retro-styled JT Scrambler combines the color palette and graphics of the iconic CJ Scrambler with Jeep Performance Parts and conceptual touches. Based on the Gladiator Rubicon, the Scrambler is kitted with many accessories from Mopar’s Performance Parts line. Those include additional LED lights on the sport/roll bar, A-pillars, and front brush guard, spray-in bedliner, two-inch steel prototype tube sport/roll bar with a total of eight tie-down points, custom 17-inch slot wheels wrapped in 37-inch tires, a two-inch Jeep Performance Parts lift kit, and rock rails. The Scrambler color theme is carried over inside on the Katzkin Amaretto Brown leather seats, dash panel, and armrests bordered in orange thread. 4. Flatbill: a desert truck that can haul two dirt-bikes This Gladiator has been tweaked to deliver extreme 4×4 capability and utility while accommodating motorbike lovers. Designed with the desert lifestyle in mind, it serves “as the ultimate hauler for an array of toys.” Design highlights include a vented carbon hood, high-clearance flares, custom-designed shortened front bumper and skid plate, a tube rear bumper, and custom bodywork on the bed lowers. The bed can accommodate two dirt bikes thanks to the removal of the tailgate and the addition of dedicated wheel ramps that slide out for easy access and loading. 5. Jeep Gladiator Gravity: made using only launch-ready Jeep Performance Parts his custom model is the closest to a production vehicle, as it’s exclusively made using launch-ready Performance Parts. The rock-climber-themed trail vehicle features Mopar cross rails and cargo carrier basket in the bed that enable storage of rock-climbing gear such as ropes, carabiners, helmets, and shoes. 6. Jeep M-715 Five-Quarter: 1968 M-175 military truck returns as 707hp restomod project This spectacular custom concept continues the Easter Jeep Safari tradition of restomods with a 1968 M-175 that has been kitted out with modern components and a menacing look. The name is a reference to historical Jeep trucks that were one-and-one-quarter tons, or “five quarters.” SUBCRIBE NOW.. https://youtube.com/c/TopCarsChannel My Other Sites Facebook : http://bit.ly/2S33EwM GooGle plus : http://bit.ly/2Uz66Ib Twitter : https://twitter.com/Top_Cars1 Pinterest : http://bit.ly/2RZzevw Blogger : http://bit.ly/2UBSBI5 Instagram : http://bit.ly/2S2cISV Popular Vidio. 9 Helpful Cycling Tips for All Levels
New Post has been published on https://onlinefitnessgym.com/9-helpful-cycling-tips-for-all-levels/
9 Helpful Cycling Tips for All Levels
Whether you stick to a stationary bike or ride outdoors, cycling is one of those activities that seems pretty straightforward (hence, “it’s like riding a bike”). But picking up a few bad habits is easier than you’d think, and poor technique can cramp your cycling style, damage your body, and even mess with your bike.
Sitting there wondering if you’re guilty of getting lazy in the saddle? We tapped a few expert cyclists to help you leave nine harmful habits behind and become a better biker.
1. Not wearing a helmet when cycling outdoors.
I mean, come on, people! The biggest, most obvious cycling no-no is to skip out on wearing a helmet. Even wearing one that isn’t a proper fit can be harmful—a comfortably snug helmet is an absolute must, as a loose fit won’t protect you in the event of an accident.
Even if local laws don’t require you to wear a helmet, do it anyway. Nix the annoying excuses you make: No distance is too short, temperature too hot, or hairstyle too perfect to justify not protecting your brain. Promise me you won’t ever get on a bike without a helmet again, OK?
2. Neglecting your gear.
Sarah Hoots, a domestic elite cyclist for Unknown Cycling in Charlotte, NC, says that serious cyclists logging serious miles should buy a new bike every 2-3 years. Or, instead of getting an entirely new whip, she says you can invest in a great carbon frame and swap out components when needed. “A new chain is as valuable as a new bike so be sure to get a new one every 2,000 miles,” Hoots says.
Hoots also suggests keeping a regular maintenance appointment scheduled with your local bike shop to prevent long-term issues. “If you ride more than once a week, this could be once every three months. Less frequent cyclists should aim for twice a year. But always check your tire pressure and inspect tires visually to look for any small tears or leakage,” Hoots says.
3. Riding a bike that’s the wrong size.
Unless you’re riding a BMX bike that’s intentionally small, you should speak with an expert to get properly fit for a bike before making a purchase. Paul Levine, CEO of Signature Cycles in Greenwich, CT, says that a proper fit plays a huge role in injury prevention and overall comfort on the bike.
“A lot of companies measure their bikes to slightly different points,” Levine says. “Even within the same manufacturer you may ride a 56cm frame in one model and a 54cm in another, simply because of the design of the bike. So many riders end up on the wrong equipment if they’re not working with experienced shop staff or a fitter to determine the bike size.”
Levine also notes that getting properly fit in a shop improves your overall riding experience, no matter how seasoned a cyclist you are. “For more seasoned riders, a fitting can increase performance and accommodate life changes, or help us reach goals,” he says. “Our bodies change a lot over time, we lose weight (or gain it), have injuries (or kids), and we evolve as cyclists when the miles accumulate. Our positions on our bikes need to reflect this.”
4. Skipping meals before or after a ride.
You’ve got to fuel before riding, but there’s no one-size-fits-all meal plan for cyclists. Erin Nelson, an instructor at Swerve Fitness in New York City, says that eating before exercise depends entirely on the person, especially for morning classes. “If you’re going to eat something, make sure it’s at least 30-45 minutes before class. I love RxBars and always have them on me.”
After a ride, it’s essential to refuel as cycling burns lots of calories. Nelson recommends having a nutritious smoothie to replenish until you can have a meal with lean protein and lots of greens.
And don’t forget to drink plenty of water before, during, and after a ride. “The actual amount during a workout varies from person to person, but you should aim for around 36 ounces of water in the hours before and after exercise,” Nelson says.
5. Barely warming up or cooling down.
Even if you hate it, stretch before and after a ride. According to Nelson, stretching is the best way to prevent injury and is also imperative for recovery and maintaining your range of motion.
Nelson recommends a runner’s lunge as it helps elongate the hip flexors that typically get very tight during cycling. And massages are always a great idea for tending to sore muscles—this is your permission slip to book that spa day you’ve been dreaming about.
Most indoor cycling spots will allow riders to enter the studio at least five minutes before class, so Nelson suggests hopping on your bike early to get warm. “This is a great way to let your body loosen up and get the muscles ready for action,” she says.
6. Skipping out on anti-chafe cream.
Discomfort from chafing during an epic ride is such a buzzkill. But good news: This agonizing pain is entirely preventable. Hoots knows from experience that chafing occurs after hours of friction in the groin region while cycling. She suggests applying a generous amount of Chamois Butt’r on any areas with creases in the skin that may be touched by the lining of your shorts’ padding.
7. Lousy form.
Cycling is a relatively low-impact on your joints, but only if you have the correct alignment. All too often, novice bike riders jot their knees outward rather than tucking them in or ride with their seat height far too low.
Splayed knees are going to cause you serious pain down the road (and make you look like a clown riding a tricycle). Keep your knees slightly inward and your elbows in tight. “When in the saddle, the body position should all be within the frame of the bike, and the core muscles should be engaged to support the back,” Nelson says.
To measure the correct seat height, start by aligning the seat with the top of your hip. Then sit on the saddle and adjust the height until you have just a 30-degree angle in your knee while extending your leg. Having the seat too high, which strains the tendons and ligaments in the hips and knees, and riding too low puts all of the engagement in your quads and patellar tendons.
And if you’re on a stationary bike, Hoots has an easy-to-follow rule of thumb for checking your form: “There should be a straight line from the center of the pedal to the tip of your knee cap. Anything slightly over or behind will cause knee pain,” she says.
8. Not being aware of your surroundings.
Wearing headphones is just plain dumb when it comes to outdoor cycling. You won’t be alert, you’ll have trouble hearing car horns and emergency sirens, and you definitely won’t hear other cyclists approaching. Even in the countryside you need all of your senses to be fully aware of your surroundings and prevent accidents.
It’s illegal in most places to use your phone while operating a vehicle, and bikes are no exception. Don’t text and ride. If you need to send a message, snap a picture, or check directions, stop off on the side of the road. Keep your phone out of sight to prevent the temptation of checking in.
9. Play by the rules.
Cyclists tend to hate drivers, but drivers also tend to hate cyclists. You must adhere to road rules. Don’t roll through stop signs haphazardly, ignore red lights, or weave through traffic—you can’t predict when someone else may open a car door or run a red light.
And if there isn’t a bike path on the street, command space in your lane. Never ride in pedestrian areas or on the sidewalk as you’ll be moving at a faster speed than people walking. Don’t hug the curb and risk getting pushed off of the road. “Cars should give cyclists three feet of space when passing, although not every driver is respectful of this rule,” Hoots says.

Asia Pacific was the leading regional market in 2017, with China accounting for the major share. In 2017 September, the Chinese government issued a newly framed energy vehicle credit mandate that took effect in 2018. This mandate sets a new and minimum benchmark for the production of electric transporters with some flexibility offered through credit trading mechanism. The country has emerged as the major hub for production of these products not only because of its supporting policy framework but also for its low cost production rates. Reflecting the cost difference in battery cost electric vehicles in the country are much less expensive. Application of lead acid batteries leads to an estimated cost of USD 167 of an electric bike in the country. On the contrary, these products cost at an average of USD 815 in the U.S. and an average cost of USD 1,546 in the Western Europe countries, which reflects to the different choices in the battery chemistry.

BMW Motorrad Sets a New Sales Record in the First Half of the Year for the Fifth Time in Succession
MUNICH, July 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --
Sales increase by 9.5% to 88,389 vehicles in the first half of 2017. The aim is to achieve a new all-time sales record for the year as a whole.
BMW Motorrad sold more motorcycles and maxi scooters in 2017 than ever before. Compared to the previous year, deliveries increased by 9.5%. As of June 2017 a total of 88,389 vehicles (previous year: 80,754 units) were supplied to customers.
Stephan Schaller, General Director of BMW Motorrad: "For all of us at BMW Motorrad it is a great pleasure and a confirmation of all our efforts that our customers continue to show us that we are on the right track with our model initiative."
Strong sales growth in Europe and Asia.
The strongest growth was recorded above all on the European markets in the first half of 2017. For example deliveries increased in France (9,447 units / previous year 7,790 units), Italy (9,099 units / previous year 7,912 units), Spain (5,573 units / previous year 5,133 units) and UK/IE (5,410 units / previous year 4.746 units). Overall around 12.9% more vehicles were delivered in Europe including Germany than in the previous year. The South American market in particular is showing considerable growth potential for BMW Motorrad with a dynamic increase in sales. As compared to the equivalent period of the previous year, deliveries increased by 16.3% to 8,306 units. Sales in China were also significantly higher than in the previous year (2,836 units / +18.8%).
The German motorcycle market remains the single biggest market for BMW Motorrad. With 14,461 units sold, BMW Motorrad boosted sales by another 4.9% and is thus the overall market leader. In the US, BMW Motorrad achieved a further increase by 3.8% with 7,157 units in the fist six months of the year.
Water-cooled R 1200 GS continues to expand its leading position significantly.
The highest-volume BMW Motorrad model series traditionally is the R Series. The motorcycles equipped with the hallmark BMW boxer engines, achieved a sales share of 49,240 units in the first half of 2017. The two travel enduros R 1200 GS and GS Adventure lead the ranking list of the BMW Motorrad top sellers. The R 1200 GS alone achieved a sales plus of 17.3% with 17,159 units sold in the first half of 2017 and was able to expand its dominant position in the big travel enduro segment even further.
The sports-oriented BMW S Series with the S 1000 RR Supersports Bike, the S 1000 R Power Roadster and the S 1000 XR Adventure Bike are a key pillar in the BMW Motorrad model range in 2017, too. Overall 12,763 S models were delivered worldwide.
A further key factor for BMW Motorrad's success in the first 6 months is the R NineT family which now includes 5 models. The currently latest member of the popular heritage family, the R NineT Urban GS, was launched successfully as recently as June.
Further impressive models in the pipeline.
With the G 310 GS another very interesting model is already waiting in the starting blocks. Above all the South American market is showing high demand for the 310 GS. The smallest member of the GS family is characterised by extreme agility and robustness making it ideally suited for dense city traffic and also for riding on unsurfaced roads outside urban areas.
The HP4 RACE will be already be available from September. More than 40,000 visitors attend the world's biggest BMW Motorrad party.
BMW customers, motorcycle enthusiasts and interested individuals from all over the world met up for the 17th time from 7 to 9 July for the legendary BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the biggest public event organised by BMW Motorrad. "We would like to send out another big thank-you to the more than 40,000 fans and visitors this year", says Timo Resch, Head of Sales and Marketing of BMW Motorrad. Apart from the already presented BMW Motorrad models for the 2018 model year, the BMW Motorrad Days were also dedicated to showing two special innovations. It was the premiere for both the BMW Motorrad Spezial range and the new Connectivity with TFT display special equipment.
The model initiative continues.
In 2017, too, BMW Motorrad is continuing its model initiative with the broadest and most attractive product portfolio in its history. Timo Resch states: "With a plus of 9.5 % after the first six months, we are well on track to set a new sales record at the end of this year.
