tessitura!!! tessitura technically means an instrument or singer’s most comfortable range. lemme just say there is like. a decent?? summary of tessitura but i changed a lot of that because o had NOT done enough research about drum corps at that point. claps my hands together hope you don’t mind. an essay

okay wait i didn’t think about this. just in case you’ve never heard about drum corps it’s kind of like marching band if you pumped it up by 100 and had no woodwinds. it’s insane. it takes months of like 12 hour rehearsals to learn a show that has to be as close to perfect as possible. you go on tour around the US and never see home inbetween shows. you live on busses and highschool gyms across the country. it takes tons of physical activity and it is Exhausting. it flips your life upside down for a while and if you don’t take care of yourself…it’s not good!!! remember this.

TOMMY!!! our tommy yayyy. tommy was raised knowing about dci. his aunt was a proud blue star back in her day, so when a performance is scheduled near them she takes 8 year old tommy. he loves it. he loves how loud it is, the way he feels the sound rumble through the bleachers, the way corps members smile at each other. the most of all though, tommy loves the sound of the trumpet. so when he reaches 6th grade beginning band, tommy comes excited and ready to blow them all away.

tommy loves music. he pours his whole soul into it. of course when you do that, there’s ups and downs. tommy’s happiness can kinda fall on how good he is at trumpet, he has one pretty rough director along the way, but tommy tries to pull himself out of any holes he falls into. because he wants to keep moving, keep getting better (both skill wise and mentally) because music is what he lives for. no director can take that joy away from him.

^back on the director thing. his director kinda..targets him. he has that whole like i see potential in this kid so i’m gonna push him past his limits so he can be good mindset. but tommy wants to enjoy band as much as he wants to be good. and tommy IS good. he takes private lessons, he practices, he makes honor bands, he cares. more than anyone else around him. but tommy feels trapped. he feels so trapped - like the very thing he lives for has become unrecognizable. so tommy quits highschool his sophomore year oh yay 🎉🎉🎉

the day tommy drops out he and tubbo meet at a local diner. this is probably one of tommy’s lowest points. tubbo is trying to figure everything out obviously and all of his questions make tommy think about how lost he actually is. he breaks down. yay !!! breaking down because you’ve suppressed every emotion you’ve had for the last few terrible months !!! tubbo awesome tubbo says like hey. music is the only thing you’ve mentioned while spiraling off about where to go with your life. if you don’t know where to channel your love for marching why don’t you audition for a drum corp. plus it would probably be good to be in a music space without The Director.

now okay background info. freshly FIFTEEN (youngest year you can do drum corps) year old tommy auditioned for the blue devils. which is famously like the Big Deal corps. it’s hilarious to me and i love him and trust twilbur feels the same way. he didn’t make it (obviously) but he learned a lot, so when this audition comes he knows more of what to expect. that’s part of how tommy, through some miracle, makes bluecoats.

it changes his life. that’s kinda what the whole au is about

tommy’s drum corps experience is mostly like. him learning to be more forgiving with himself. learning his limits and learning that all of them are okay. making SO many friends everyone is #endeared by him (except for niki LMAO we’ll get into that) getting past the physical and mental exhaustion. learning to rely on others etc. just the drum corps/marching band experience yk

and tommy loves it first day of drum corps he’s like i was made for this actually. and he’s very confident about that he WILL tell everyone

now listen i haven’t really thought about when tommy and wilbur meet. but i do know how. there’s this drum corps called the velvet knights that disbanded is 1996 (i think?? that’s off the top of my head lol) they were literally nicknamed the clown princes of dci because of how just. silly their shows were. they were also famous for always marching in red converse.

so one day, when tommy happens to be wearing red converse, he hears a scoff behind him. he whips around and sees the drum major. who tommy has already began to idolize.

“what are you, a velvet knight?”

“what?”

“your shoes!”

okay so. wilbur joined band after eret quit theatre to play tenor sax. wilbur followed him because theatre just wasn’t doing it for him anymore. he, just like tommy, fell in love with band. wilbur was a lot more obsessive with it though. he immediately began practicing everyday for hours, making his whole life revolve around constantly improving. the stress weighs down on you eventually, you know?

wilbur is one of twins with techno. wilbur feels a lot less than his twin. like he has to prove himself (even if those thoughts aren’t really based on anything solid.) so band kinda becomes a way he can shine.

don’t get me wrong wilbur is not always like. super serious. he does band because he loves it. it’s so obvious that he loves it. even when you put aside all the trying to be great stuff wilbur loves band. and he will start some shenanigans. he’s just very disciplined with improving and in highschool he has this itch under his skin that people don’t view him as good enough that as he ages grows into a desperate desire to be great and to be remembered and all that cwilbur stuff. but wilbur loves band. he’s so passionate and he genuinely loves every member of that stupid drum corps it’s so gosh. twilbur can’t even see how important just Being Himself is to others and how much He means to the corps and his friends. not his playing, not hiss accomplishments, so many people love him for just him BUT HE CANT SEE IT my. aughhhh

this is so rambley. he just makes my heart HURT me when i think that no one takes my skills seriously and i need to be better but it’s just that people love me for my entirety even when i can’t.

OKAY MORE LIKE ACTUAL INFORMATION ABOUT HIM LOL…he has two years of open class experience and then 3 years of world class. unlike tommy😭😭😭

his best friend is niki can i just say? crainduo make me crazy and this au. it might be even worse. they meet at an honor band audition freshman year because niki was wearing an abba t shirt and wilbur has never been scared to talk to anyone ever. THEYRE BOTH ABBA FANS WHO CHEERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they’re literally only their true selves around each other i’m so crazy. they share earbuds they match outfits they go to coffee shops together WILBUR WRITES MUSIC FOR NIKI TO PLAY ON FLUTE DO YOU (i get dragged away)

oh also niki does guard for bluecoats!!!!!!!!

wilbur ends up giving tommy private lessons after tour is over. because they both kinda became attached to each other and wilbur is the best trumpet player tommy has EVER met (better than his old director WHO CHEERED) so he begs wilbur for them

lemme just say? twilbur is not in a good mental place at this point. one. post tour depression hits him HARD two. he didn’t take care of himself well on tour at all three. all of the problems i mentioned above are getting worse for him since he’s not constantly surrounded by his friends. AND ☝️ being back at college studying for a degree he hates when he wants to do music so so so so bad makes him worse. everuthing is making this guy wrose.

their lessons are a really good bonding experience and tommy learns a lot. they’re a great part of both of their lives especially for tommy who’s last experience with a teacher was not good at all. but as time goes on wilbur starts to let his mindset bleed out onto tommy and it’s not fun. it’s not fun. because wilbur has the same mindset tommy’s old director has AUGHH theyre sou.

^right around this situation wilbur cuts Everyone off. straight up no contact. he feels like they’re all distractions from him being great (he wants to cut them off because he thinks his end will hurt them less that way)

wilbur goes home to techno after an unexpected run in with niki it’s a whole thing i have a fic about it 🎉🎉🎉those days with techno are pretty rough and awkward because techno doesn’t Know this version of wilbur.

while he’s at techno’s his birthday comes along and wilbur kills himself while techno is going to pick up tommy for a surprise birthday party. he leaves letters for everyone and the one to niki is the longest. longer than tommy’s, who his last few months practiacally revolved around, longer than eret, his childhood friend, longer than his twin, who he spent his entire life with. he leaves his trumpet for tommy and tommy never stops playing that instrument no matter how much better he could have.

wilbur wears his corps jacket all the time even if it one million degrees outside. he loves the attention

niki hates tommy because he minorly inconvenienced her a few times and she is always out for him. (tommy ate her oreos, broke one of her hairties and she tripped over his case once)

eret is a smoothie addict and volunteers for random things a lot. he also only does jazz band after highschool and is so confused about what wilbur and niki are doing all the time

beeduo met in the emergency room??? while tommy was on tour and he’s so mad about it

NIKI DRIVES A MOTORCYCLE.

tommy bought a nerf gun at some point on tour and is a menace to ride on the bus with because of it
