I joined Tumblr 13 years ago to keep up with this little boyband I heard about from fans of X Factor UK on Twitter. Actually, those fans were using lyrics from the song "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction to describe another music artist I was following--"the way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed" about Tommy Joe Ratliff, Adam Lambert's bassist. Watching all the vids and gifs on Tumblr, I first noticed Louis' cute energetic demeanor, then Harry's adorable dimples, then noticed the name "Larry Stylinson". And the rest is history! Lucky 13, sometimes.

Rare writer ask game: name three pieces of media that are not novels/short stories or movies/TV that were formative for you, and tag three people.

Oh damn, this is tricky and I love that. I don't know how much any of these are connected to my writing specifically, but they were formative to who I am and obviously that's always gonna tie into my writing somehow.

1. Ocarina of Time. It always will be one of my favourite video games, and the kind of games I like now are still often reflective of what I liked about it. Also, I said recently in another ask that Sparrabeth was my first ship, and it was definitely the first one I went all in on, but Link/Sheik was probably actually where I started (that Bolero of Fire bit, am I right?) Sheik was also probably technically my first queer fictional crush.

2. This feels cringe to admit 😅, but Adam Lambert's Glam Nation tour. I was 19 and juuuuust starting to internally acknowledge and accept myself as queer, and I would watch all the videos from the concerts and dance along in my room and sigh dreamily over Tommy Joe Ratliff's knees buckling while he got snogged within an inch of his life. It was the first time I remember being excited about being queer, because it seemed so damn cool. ("Fun" side note; writing this made me go "the heck ever happened to Tommy Joe anyway?" and apparently now he's a far-right Christian Trumpster, so that's a thing that happened. Somewhat disorienting that he was a little part of my journey away from that and then he went into it. Booooo.)

2. This song. One of my earliest memories is of my dad holding me and singing this song to me. I still can't listen to it without tearing up. And really just a lot of music I associate with being a kid in the 90s. There's so many songs that take me back to my mom hitting record on the tape deck when they came on the radio, to the way my dad whistled along to classic rock. But this one is right down at the foundation.

11:A song that you never get tired of

Given how long I fixate on one song until I fixate on another and hop between song fixations I don’t get tired of the songs that I choose to listen to so much I don’t think? We’ll also only choose a few that I’ve listened to for at least two years (so far):

First that comes to mind is Polyphia’s The Worst (however sometimes I can’t listen to it if it puts me back in the place I was when I listened to it all of 2021(?) or 2022(?) even though it soothed me very much through it)

Another is The Neighbourhood’s Afraid. Ever since it was in an 8tracks playlist I have loved it very much and held it so close to my heart. Though I don’t listen to it as often as I once did.

12:A song from your preteen years

One of the first that comes to mind is Marilyn Manson’s Coma White

But also Sleepwalking from BMTH

But I know there was a lot of Three Days Grace, as well as Miyavi.

I was starting to branch out and get to explore music on my own (and getting free legal downloads every week from my library’s music site) at this point in time

Mum really loves Adam Lambert after watching him on American Idol so I listened to him too (I love him too!) and uhhhh his bassist until he could be his guitarist Tommy Joe Ratliff was Very Cute (and so I listened to some music he liked starting from Depeche Mode and eventually branching off into so many different places I have no idea anymore (I remember doodling on everything in class in middle school though and the DM rose was definitely one of those things haha) definitely at that age I also was influenced by what my older cousins liked to listen to as well - mostly the radio station that is now owned by iheartradio. While also needing music to validate and cathart with my Biggest Feelings I’ve Experienced At That Point In Time In Life.

So I’m probably going to regret digging into this particular mess, but has Tommy Joe Ratliff completely metamophosized into a not-so-funhouse mirror version of himself? I haven’t really been keeping up with various musical people whose work I liked forever ago, but a glance at twitter and things looked... weird? Is he just a conservative Christian republican now? When did that happen? Don’t some of his views kind of spit on the entire community he used to be a part of? Morbid curiosity compelled me to ask the internet at large, who may have been paying more attention.
