Hey, everyone!
I'm doing better (although living on my own is WEIRD after being with my ex for 21 years), and I wanted to thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. I'm getting through this one day at a time, and I'll make it to the other side of the road. 🐔
Anyway, there was a recent list of best comedians in the 21st century in the Telegraph on the eve of the Fringe Festival, and some of my favorite comics were included! 👀
Here's the descriptions for those curious—I highly recommend all of these incredible comics, ESPECIALLY number 1:
44. Kate Berlant (my article about her and Bo; audience interviews for Kate coming soon!)
A warped mirror for millennial smugness, 36-year-old Berlant’s narcissistic persona and fast-paced, deadpan delivery have inspired a host of great younger acts (including Leo Reich). Her half-improvised, stream-of-consciousness patter is a kind of thrilling comedy glossolalia, while her mind-reading routine is some of the funniest failed stage-magic since Tommy Cooper. The American’s luvvie-mocking Broadway show Kate (directed by Bo Burnham) arrives in London next month. Fight for a ticket.
16. James Acaster (my article about him and Bo)
It’s easy to take Acaster for granted – he’s constantly on panel shows and podcasts. But his 2018 stand-up shows (collected on Netflix as Repertoire) are works of borderline genius; baroque puzzle-boxes, all buried callbacks and high-concept whimsy. If he once seemed a bit aloof and impersonal, that mask fell with his most recent West End show: a confessional tour-de-force about being dumped by his girlfriend for Rowan Atkinson.
5. Tim Minchin (my article about him and Bo)
The kohl-eyed, frantic-haired Aussie already felt like the finished article when he parachuted into the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe with his sensational debut, which parodied teen popstar dreams with precision-tooled, beat-perfect musical numbers. Almost two decades later – after stage-musical success with Matilda and Groundhog Day – his live shows come with more contemplation and political edge, but that twinkly-eyed mischief is still there. Minchin evolves with age, and is all the better for it.
4. Maria Bamford (my article about her and Bo)
A critic once called Bamford schizophrenic. She corrected him: “That’s not my mental illness! Schizophrenia is, of course, hearing voices, not doing voices.” An impressionist whose vocal acrobatics are usually used to imitate her own family, Bamford can be surreal, confessional or staggeringly dark (especially stories about her time “in the psych ward”), but is always thrilling. Her rare performances – in her own front room, car parks, or to just one audience member at a time – are unique. Wildly original, and a crucial influence on countless young British acts, she is, to my mind, America’s greatest living stand-up.
1. Bo Burnham (my primer and SOOOO much more on my website haha)
Burnham is the 21st-century comedian. Recorded in his bedroom, the razor-sharp New Englander’s piano-driven songs made him a YouTube sensation by the age of 19, at which point, in 2010, he astonished British audiences with an almost bewilderingly precocious stage debut, Words, Words, Words.
His follow-up, What, was better yet, a royal-flush hour of ingeniously sly musical, character and meta-comedy that was the undisputed hit of 2013. As he told me at the time, “I do hope my sort of frantic, the-floor-is-lava type of comedy is a mimic of what it feels like to be alive now.” Indeed it was, and, although panic attacks took Burnham away from the stage for some years, he blithely whipped up the acclaimed feature film Eighth Grade in 2018, and three years later returned to the public eye with the Netflix special Inside.
This was locked-down comedy – as “live” as it could be at the time – about the misery, isolation and gnawing insecurity of being a young comic unable to perform, so finely observed, intricately constructed and beautifully written it made your head spin. In terms of capturing that bizarre moment, mining it for laughs, and speaking both to his own generation and to all of us imprisoned in our own homes, no one else even came close.
Congratulations, Bo! ✌🏼

The Power Of Music & Comedy: Tim Minchin
New Post has been published on https://grahamstoney.com/music/the-power-of-music-comedy-tim-minchin
The Power Of Music & Comedy: Tim Minchin
Tumblr media
Tim Minchin is a thoughtful performer who combines the power of music and comedy to both entertain and impact his audience, while expressing what is on his mind in an engaging and memorable way.
I first came across Tim when a friend offered me a ticket to his Sydney show during the Ready For This? tour in 2009. While I’d never heard of him before, I was immediately drawn in by the proficiency of his piano playing, the intellectual nature of his comedic observations, and his bizarre teased hairstyle.
Tim’s meteoric rise to fame was captured in the documentary Rock ‘n’ Roll Nerd, named after one of his early signature tunes that expressed ambivalence at not fitting the traditional rock star mould:
youtube
While he achieved success as a musical comedian in a relatively short period of time, it came after many years of playing keyboard in an 80’s rock cover band. At the beginning of his career he as constantly under pressure to create an income as his wife was keen to give up work and start a family. They were both overjoyed when she became pregnant, but this also ratcheted up the pressure on Tim to provide for his family financially. A particularly vulnerable moment in the documentary happens when his wife has a miscarriage while he is on tour, and we get to see Tim in grief revealing his sensitive side. There is more to him than just his on-stage trickster persona. The one silver lining in this cloud was that gave him some breathing space to launch his career, move to London and become successful before they became pregnant again.
Giles Hardie said that Tim’s success was often a reflection his past experiences, describing him as a “jack of all trades” and quoting co-star David Duchovny from TV series Californication calling him “a high-energy dude” with a “comedic soul”. In an interview with Leigh Sales, Tim described his joy in musical collaboration and the difficulty of avoiding celebrity narcissism.
His song Canvas Bags drives home the importance of taking reusable shopping bags to the supermarket with a degree of repetition bordering on the absurd. We don’t even use canvas bags much in Australia, but with this song in my head, I always remember to take shopping bags every time I leave the house:
youtube
One of the hallmarks of a great artist is getting referenced in other artist’s work, and the inclusion of Canvas Bags in the Four Chord Song by The Axis of Awesome is a nod of respect from his comedy colleagues:
youtube
Tim frequently tackles important issues in his music, such as the foolishness of belief systems based on pseudoscience in his 9-minute beat poem Storm:
youtube
His song Prejudice uses an ironic twist to assault racism:
youtube
Tim isn’t afraid to offend his audience, using profanity to highlight the distorted priorities of the Catholic Church’s response to child sexual abuse by priests in Pope Song.
youtube
If you think the song is offensive, how could that possibly compare to what some priests have been doing to children with the protection of the church?
Neil Genzlinger says Tim “looks like a character out of ‘Sweeney Todd,’ alternates between absurd, low-key monologues and incongruously comic songs, accompanying himself with gleeful piano pyrotechnics.”
While his ability to weave his comedic genius into his songs is the underpinning of his success, he also has the ability to write sensitive songs. White Wine In The Sun describes the strong emotional dynamics in families as the basis for our feelings of safety and security in the world. Even for atheists like Tim and I, spending quality time with family on Christmas Day feels special, and hearing this song always makes me tear up as I think of Christmas Days spent with my own family in the sun together:
youtube
Social issues have always been a significant influence on Tim’s work, and his ability to write, record and produce catchy, quirky and relatable songs rapidly allows him to respond to newsworthy events in a timely manner. Come Home (Cardinal Pell) expressed the outrage that many Australian’s felt at the perception that Cardinal George Pell was avoiding Australian justice by hiding out in The Vatican:
youtube
However, Joel Hodge considered it “name-calling and abuse”, saying Tim “seems more interested in provoking reaction than dealing with the facts”, and that “it gives an indication of the level of public debate in Australia”. Gerard Henderson described the song as “abusive”, calling Tim a “militant atheist musician” and accusing him of engaging in guilt by association.
In the wake of the recent bush fire disaster and the coronavirus lockdown, Tim featured on HouseFyre with Briggs, expressing the frustration that many Australians feel with our political leadership’s response in recent times of major crisis:
youtube
It got played on Rage last Friday night, a sign of success and mainstream acceptance in the Australian music industry.
Music is unique in its ability to affect us emotionally, and comedy is unique in its ability to disarm our prejudices and highlight inconsistencies in ourselves which we could otherwise easily ignore. By combining the two, Tim Minchin has tapped into a powerful force to not only entertain, but also to enlighten his audience and inspire social change from a grassroots individual level.

worst case scenario les mis cast?? (incl. as many minor/swing tracks as you imagine they'd totally bomb)
This is a difficult question because it’s going to be almost impossible to beat the nightmare cast that we’ve only recently endured at the Gielgud concert. But I will try my best.
The year is 2025. We have endured another 3 staged concerts with fantastic actors as 3rd understudies and mediocre urdang graduates as principals. Bradley Jaden is still principal Javert in the west end, he now wears an open poet shirt during his suicide and is dampened with a wet sponge prior to the scene so that it clings nicely to his arms.
The anticipation for the 40th anniversary is great. We daren’t get our hopes up, we’ve been burnt before but someone has heard whispers of a revolve….
That someone lied. The 20065th cash grab concert is announced in a joyless Facebook graphic. Cammack has managed to find a venue even bigger and less suited to such an event than the O2 and he’s holding it there. Tickets start at £470.
Maybe it will be a good cast though. They couldn’t do it again could they? “I don’t have enough money but if they cast JOJ and Earl Carpenter in the leads I’ll have to buy a ticket!!” Tweets one naive fan.
The cast announcement drops one lunchtime and all the air leaves the room.
Its under the cut for suspense. And also because its sooooo long
Jean Valjean: Ramin Karimloo Did you know he was the youngest person to play the phantom on the west end? DId you? Oh you did? Good. Did you also know that he is conventionally attractive? Well you’ll be sure to know this by the time the concert is over because he will be performing the entire thing shirtless. Except for the barricade scenes where he will wear the national guard coat open over his bare chest. He will also add a few lines of profanity because Valjean has had a really hard life which means he would swear a lot...obviously. (Disclaimer: this could be so much worse I know but wait until you read the rest)
Javert: Tim Minchin Fresh from his phenomenal vocal performance in Jesus Christ Superstar, Tim tries his hand at performing the flattest rendition of Stars you have ever heard. Of course the ensemble will be full of phenomenal actors who could have performed this 1000% better but where would be the fun in that?
Fantine: Idina Menzel Who wouldn’t want to hear that cheese grated voice belt every note in I dreamed a dream? Its obviously exactly the casting the fans have been asking for and who is Cammack to deny them?
Cosette: Amara Okereke  Theres just something about having one member of the cast whos actually really good in their role that makes these concerts even more painful and Amara is taking that bullet. At the end the original cast will come out and they will all look at her with knowing smiles and it will be the only think worth watching.
Marius: Tom Fletcher Carrie helped him get the role, age is just a number. Apparently he’s always wanted to play it ever since he was a child. He gives it his all but his voice cracks multiple times and the whole thing is so embarrassing to watch that you miss Nick Jonas.
Eponine: Carrie Hope Fletcher Yeah this is okay casting I don’t hate her in this role but she has to pretend to be in love with her older brother (and puts way too much into it) so its the worst casting ever.
Enjolras: Michael Ball. Apparently this is another role he has always dreamed of playing but was never cast in. Thats because he’s incredibly wrong for it. It doesn’t matter that he’s older than the rest of the cast, he’s Michael Ball.
Thenardier: Ricky Gervais Oh you thought Matt Lucas was bad? You will be begging for him to come back.
Madame Thenardier: Matt Lucas in drag. He’ll make Madame T’s verse in Master of the House take a full 2 minutes and be incredibly sexual. You will want to die.
Gavroche: Eddie Redmayne  He has always wanted to be Gavroche and Cammack decides to let him. He comes out on his knees like lord Farquaad.
Grantaire : Jeremy Jordan
The Bishop of Digne: James Barbour Do I even need to say anything....?
I have put all of my energy into this i don’t think I can bear to think of bad takes for all the remaining tracks. Perhaps I will make a post later. BUT there would be members of the OLC in really minor tracks just as a kick in the teeth to the audience. Eg, Colm Wilkinson as Bamatabois, Rebecca Caine as the Locket Crone. Earl carpenter is also there as “man reading newspaper”.

10 questions tag
Thank you @raonaidstudies for the tag x
I’ve already done this once so won’t be tagging anyone but I really enjoyed your questions
If you could have dinner with two people, dead or alive, who would they be and why? Jack the Ripper (to finally find out who he was) and Pompey the Great (just because I find him a pretty interesting guy)
What’s your favourite cuisine? Indian for sure
What language is your favourite to listen to and why? My favourite language to listen to is either Mandarin or German (the two I am trying to learn). I find the tones in Mandarin really pretty
How are you doing right now? (Love to everyone, bc the world kind of sucks right now ❤️ ) I’m doing good right now. I hope everyone reading this is too <3
Do you collect anything? If so, what is it? If not, what would you like to collect? When I was younger I collected gemstones and pretty rocks. I don’t collect anything anymore
If I gave you a plane ticket for tomorrow, where would you go, what would you see and why? My dream vacation is to China and there’s so much stuff I want to do there. Top of the list is probably zhangjiajie (the floating mountains)
What types of classes are you taking when the semester starts? Are you excited? I’m very excited for my new classes. I’m taking two archaeology classes (one about Athens and one about Pompeii) and a class analysing the work of Tacitus. I also get to write my dissertation this year.
What do you typically order at a cafe? I usually order a hot chocolate (I don’t like tea or coffee) and some sort of pastry to eat
What are your top 5 songs/artists?
That’s so difficult!
Tim Minchin
Guns n Roses
Hu Xia
Gfriend
Kelly Clarkson
Do you have a motto or quote that you live by? ‘Nothing is as bad as it seems’. It really helps me out when I’m struggling with anxiety
