Tides

Three basic tidal patterns occur along the world's major coastlines. In general, there are two high tides and two low tides every day in most areas. If the two high tides and the two low tides are approximately the same height, this is referred to as a semi-diurnal or semi-daily high tide. If the high and low tides differ in height, this is referred to as a mixed semi-diurnal tide.

Dinurnal (top left). An area has a diurnal tidal cycle if it experiences a high tide and an ebb tide every lunar day. Many areas in the Gulf of Mexico have this type of tide.

Semidiurnal tidal cycle (top right). An area has a semi-diurnal tidal cycle when it experiences two high and low tides of approximately equal magnitude each lunar day. Many areas on the east coast of North America have these tidal cycles.

Mixed semidiurnal tidal cycle (lower centre). An area has a mixed semidiurnal tidal cycle if it experiences two different high and low tides on each lunar day. Many areas on the west coast of North America have these tidal cycles.

Moss Cove at low tide vs high tide. There are a lot of small coves in Laguna Beach that have no dry sand during high tide; if you catch it at the wrong time, you can only stay dry on the stairs. I love the ephemeral nature of the tides and the seasonality of the patterns; I'm still trying to learn the general tide and surf patterns

Summary: When their routine is interrupted, Wei Ying gets himself and Lan Zhan ready for bed. Kay's comments: This story was so sweet and made me feel all warm and mushy inside T_T Just a short storty of Wei Ying taking care of Lan Zhan after an unspecified rough day, taking him through their routine and tucking him in. Every word and every action is filled with so much love, my heart has grown three sizes. Excerpt: Wei Ying toes off his shoes, changes into his house slippers, and pours himself a glass of water when he comes home. While the water filter's refilling, he washes his hands at the kitchen sink. This is all routine: Lan Zhan's routine, not his, which Wei Ying took and made his and which has the double effect of keeping him hydrated and keeping him closer to his partner. He's home late tonight, his backpack filled with books from the library where he's abandoned it on the sofa. Wei Ying thinks that, notes it, and walks past the backpack on his way to the bathroom. He notes it again on the way back to get more water and forgets it again. He has a reason this time: the lights are on. The lights are usually on. He gets home later than Lan Zhan on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Lan Zhan is usually asleep, waiting for him in bed. He's always asleep, and he always curls against Wei Ying when slides into bed. Even if he's sleeping on his back. Even if Wei Ying is going to scroll on his phone instead of rest. But now the lights are on in the bedroom too, so Wei Ying goes. The backpack, he thinks—he'll grab the backpack later.
