"The Haunting Of Bly Manor" request: I'm so sorry if this isn't where I am supposed to write a request, but I've never written one. If it's possible I would like an Owen imagine. I am the housekeeper in bly manor instead of Hannah and me abd Owen would flirt at times, but we haven't kissed or anything. In the end, The lady in the lake was dragging me towards the lake and Owen saved me. Now you can either make it so we kiss after he saved me or when we meet a few years later in his restaurant because I can't make up my mind. If you don't like the request, you can ignore it haha.

Sometimes you wished you had chosen differently. Maybe you should have wished to not have come to Bly Manor, to not be amongst the dead that haunted the halls, but you didn’t regret that. It wasn’t how you anticipated your job at the manor going, but you loved the family you worked for, and you were certainly grateful for those who you worked with. Your biggest regret involved him. Owen had been the chef for nearly as long as you had been the housekeeper for the Wingrave family, and you instantly hit it off. You liked each other and it was obvious to everyone that saw you but neither of you wanted to make the first move, scared to ruin your professional and platonic relationship. Now, you wished you had let the nerves and worry dissolve and allow you to be happy but maybe you would never get a chance.

Rumours of hauntings had been around long before you started working at the manor, but you had always been sceptical, even if there were things that had made you question it. Part of you never believed in the lady in the lake, no matter what you hear of it, but when you felt an uncontrollable force grab hold of you and drag you towards the lake, there was no denying it anymore. Your only saving grace was Owen had stayed late and happened to see the attack.

Everything happened in a blur of fear and panic as you attempted to kick and hit at your invisible assailant. You were too busy focusing on your own mortality to see how he stopped you from being pulled under the water of the lake, leaving you only aware when you finally felt him tug you back onto the bank, successfully removing you from the grasp.

You clutched onto the man in front of you, not caring that you were covered in dirty lake water and a sludge of mud that coated you both as your bodyweight forced him into the bank.

“Are you okay?” He asked, pushing your wet hair from your face.

You panted, trying to get your breath back to normal but adrenaline still pumped through you, forcing the uneven breathing pattern.

“You saved me,” you croaked. “You saved my life.”

You peered up at your saviour, part of you questioning if it was true or some weird dream, but when you saw his smeared glasses and panicked smile, you knew it was him. With a mixture of panic and confidence from being in the face of death, you realised there wasn’t anything to fear between you and let your instincts take hold. You leant up, pressing your lips firmly to his, taking you both by surprise.

When you pulled away, you couldn’t help the smile that took hold of your lips.

“Was that for saving you or because you actually wanted to?” He questioned.

“I’ve wanted to do that for so long but almost dying gave me the courage to actually do it.”

His smile mirrored yours, dopey, slightly confused but joyous. “I’ve wanted to do that for a long time too.”

You didn’t take a second thought before you kissed him once again.

Another month, another Choices Insiders

I lost a lot of interest when it turned out we're not the titular character in Hot Shot but a lowly reporter who has to wh*re out and do filthy propaganda for some hockey team. However, it has GOC MC so I'll still give it a try, albeit with low expectations.

I liked the behind-the-scenes stuff though, always cool to see what goes into creating art for the game. There seems to be a lot of 3D modelling involved in background art, which is cool. Perhaps PB could base character sprites on 3D models as well, then they wouldn't look so weird.

Surprised that PB is trying to release Blades 3 already this year, although it doesn't sound that impossible. After all, book 2 was still in pre-production less than a year before its release. I hope that they won't rush it though and take more time if needed. RWB spin-off and COP3 are not surprising as they're lower budget linear stories.

1 GOC book per 1 gender locked book is ...ooookay, it's not good but better than last year. 3 per 2 would be more in line with the better years and actually improve the situation overall. I'll probably do the next Choices stats post about GOC books.

ID2 - the main villain, the final battle, the way MC was turned into vampire and how he reacted to it were all hugely underwhelming but I still look forward to it. Urban fantasies seem to be my thing (besides sci-fi but sadly PB isn't interested). I'm curious how they'll handle the 3 different romance paths, I also want to see MC seriously struggle mentally with vampire life and I hope that whatever danger is waiting for us is more multifaceted than the boring villain in book 1. Hopefully there won't be another cheesy happy ending where regular humans and vampires suddenly become the best buddies.

ACT - it's gender locked so there goes my interest.

TDG - the name and thumbnail made me hope for something dark and gritty but based on the leaks we're once again getting involved with the quirky lives of rich people. Still, it's a GOC detective story so it shouldn't be too bad. Fingers crossed there's still going to be some gore and blood besides the fake glittery glamour.

TGOU - meh, another gender locked book. Probably THOBM but smuttier and over 3 times longer.

FR - lol I don't know why the title sounds so funny to me 🤣! Based on recent patterns, the filthy rich one is probably the LI, unless PB manages to surprise us. What is up with the fascination with billionaires anyway? What is PB trying to tell us with it? That the company is struggling and waiting for a sugar daddy to rescue it? Anyway, it's another gender locked book, so there's little to no chance I'm going to read it.

HOF - that must be the book about firefighters that PB teased sometime ago. It's good to have something involving a more down to earth life style for a change that us regular people could relate to. I just hope it's not another one of those books where only the LI is the firefighter. Or where we are another rookie falling for an older, more experienced person.

I’d even go as far as to say Eddie’s queer journey started all the way back in 4.13, with Carla telling Eddie to follow his heart and not Christophers, which was a contrast to how she approached Shannon (“ a boy needs his mother in his life”). I’m firmly in the belief that he had his “oh” moment when he was shot, because he reached for Buck, and knew that if he could get to Buck/Buck was safe, he would be okay. But he repressed it due to all the trauma that lingers. You can see part of that repression in 6.12, when Buck asks if Eddie remembers anything. I wouldn’t necessarily say Eddie was being dishonest about what he remembers (repression is a hell of a drug), but he was avoidant in that moment, while being open. (Sort of like “I’ll tell you a small secret to keep the bigger one hidden.” )

The biggest sticking out point to me for an earlier development is the Eddieana breakup. Putting aside the rumours that that was originally the start of his arc, the way the entire thing was framed was extremely telling, from the dialogue being word for word from Dani in THOBM, to the costume colours and the poses themselves. While they’re breaking up, Eddie is closed off, holding himself together and trying not to break down. He admits that he will never love Ana the way he’s supposed to, and the ‘ready-made’ family excuse is just that: an excuse. He had been dating Ana for roughly 7-8 months at this point, so he should be open to letting her in, even just a bit, but he’s not. On the other hand, he let Buck in easily, and repeatedly, forming a quicker made family than that with Ana, yet he has no issues with this. This is the point where he’s finally starting to realize something is ‘wrong’ with him.

The panic attacks was never just about his trauma from the military, in fact—it wasn’t brought on by that at all past the panic in S3. Eddie panics both times in 5.01-5.03 because someone assumes Ana plays a larger role in his life (Christopher’s mother/his wife) than she actually does, and instead of correcting them, he panics, and has a freeze response. There’s no need for this if it was just about Ana’s role being assumed further, he could easily correct them, but the mere idea of it makes him scared. This even goes all the way back to Shannon, and the pressure of marrying her and subsequently ‘running away’ from her. (Imo, I think while they may have wanted to do the ptsd arc at some point, the shut down from his queer arc was the reason it was done that season.) We then have Eddie’s breakdown, and while part of it is because his colleagues are dead and he has survivors guilt, another part of it is because he ‘failed’ once more. He believes he is broken, that his job of saving people is not worth it because it doesn’t replace the people he loses. He couldn’t make his parents happy, he couldn’t make Shannon stay, he couldn’t save Shannon, or Buck, or Chris, or Buck again. He almost didn’t save Hayden—nearly died trying—he lost Ana, and now his crew, the people he saved, he never actually did. He pulled them out, but he didn’t save them, and I think that is something he believes 100% about himself, that no matter how hard he tries to fix himself, to get better, to save himself, he never can. All he does is fail.

(The point above about failing, I’ll circle back to, because it’s important with Kim). Eddie gets better, he thinks everything is okay, and then Buck dies. But unlike Buck, Eddie can’t save him, can’t help no matter how hard he tries, regulated to driving instead of helping. It isn’t until the last minute he has with Buck is he able to push air back into his lungs and blood back into his heart, does Eddie finally ‘win’. But even then, it’s not enough. It was very very telling how much Eddie looked like a grieving widow while Buck was in his coma. It hit him that he’ll live in a world without Buck, and if Buck doesn’t live, neither will Eddie. Going back to the shooting, if Eddie can just get to Buck, if he knows Buck is safe, he’ll be safe. This is when I believe his “oh” moment comes slamming back full force. He cannot live without Buck, and so what the hell does that mean? What role does Buck play in his life? Before he can question it, ask Buck, and figure it out, along comes Natalia and “she sees me” and Eddie looking at Buck with such a look of hurt, because here is Eddie, the man who sees him, the man who saved him, but Buck isn’t his. This leads into Pepa pushing Eddie to date so that he won’t be alone. Eddie doesn’t want to be alone, he wants Buck, but he can’t have him, so there is Marisol. She’s another perfect on paper woman to fit the roles that have been set out from him day one. Rules and orders he has to follow, a man he needs to be.

That leads into your point about Marisol and the nun arc, him fighting his catholic guilt, losing his son, etc. Back to Kim however, Eddie sees Shannon, sees how he failed her, and tries to do better. It was never about actually dating her, it was about finding and fixing the only love he knew worked: Shannon. But whether he’s realized it now or not, Shannon wasn’t that. They lived apart longer than they did together, they fought more than they didn’t, they left each other, and on and on. He’s romanticizing a relationship he knows doesn’t exist, but it’s better than looking inward on why exactly he’s doing that. Buck catches him, and like Buck does, he steps in and he helps. He nudges on that Door, and while Eddie doesn’t want to open it yet, he knows that if he doesn’t listen to Buck, Buck will open it for him. The thing about this door though, is it’s bursting at the hinges, and that moment where Christopher says “mom?” it all explodes open.

Now Eddie’s at the point in his life where everything is gone, destroyed, and broken. He is broken, and he hurts everything he touches. And instead of picking up everything, putting it back neatly, he ignores it. Tries to sweep it under the rug. The only reason he’s getting away with it is because the two constants in his life are gone. Christopher—his heart—is gone. He irreparably broke them, and his parents swooped in and nothing he does can fix it. He’s failed Christopher over and over, but this time it’s permanent. He proved his parents right. Buck—his north star—is pulling back. Eddie is likely the reason why, not wanting to burden Buck, because he’s the reason another person left him, and he can’t face that. Buck is trying, but Eddie is pushing him away in fear of breaking him too. But Eddie misses Buck, you can tell in every glance, the stares, and how quick he looks away when Buck’s eyes meet his. He’s now learnt new things about Buck, about his new friend Tommy, and that’s making him think about himself, and again, what Buck means to him.

He has nothing to hide behind now. His son is gone, an elephant in the room with Buck, and his best friend, and his new discovery, is the Issue. It’s why he’s opening up to Chimney and Hen more, why he’s likely to open up to Bobby soon. He can’t talk to Buck because Buck knows him so well, and he can’t deal with Buck seeing something he doesn’t understand himself.

i wonder if most of the pushback with regard to 8x05 comes from the fandom being so sure that eddie is going to figure out he’s gay before he shaves the mustache. i think that belief has led to there being this sense of ‘if gay eddie/buddie doesn’t happen now and like this then it’s never going to happen and we’re running out of time’, which isn’t true. i admittedly did get caught up how the fandom theorized episodes 5-7 would play out (bt fight and breakup in 5-6, gay eddie and mustache shaved in 6, possible feelings realization in 7) and felt disappointed with 8x05 because of that, but after rewatching the episode and reevaluating the expectations i had for it and why i even had them in the first place i feel a lot better about it. eddie’s arc is only just starting! we know the shaving scene is at the end of the next episode, and imo it would be extremely rushed for eddie to realize he’s gay within that time frame based on what we’ve seen from him so far. eddie has clearly been thinking a lot about the situation he’s in but his sense of self is still wrapped up in being a father. my guess now is that he will confide in someone about feeling completely lost without christopher in his life and the mustache being a manifestation of that, and they will tell him that altering his physical appearance isn’t the solution he needs to change his circumstances and encourage him to figure out who he is outside of being a father. the synopsis for 8x06 says a call dealing with a divorced man will open old wounds, so if that's about eddie then i think that he will likely also confess to shannon wanting a divorce and how he’s been lying to himself about the true nature of their marriage and the effect that lie has had on all his subsequent romantic relationships. shaving off the mustache will be what kickstarts his self-discovery arc instead of being the moment he accepts his sexuality like i’d thought previously.

as far as the bt breakup goes — if the show does end up going the route of tommy being abby’s ex and that striking a nerve with buck, i think that could be the catalyst that allows him the freedom to admit all the other things about tommy/the relationship that he dislikes but has so far disregarded in an effort to make the relationship work. the comments buck made in 8x05 (“oh so i am gross?” and “my own boyfriend won’t even kiss me”) point toward him feeling dissatisfied and frustrated with tommy. i also wanted to add on to what the other anons have said about bt’s lack of intimacy and say that i find it to be apparent in the dialogue as well. what stuck out the most to me about the daddy issues joke last season was that although buck and tommy had been seeing each other for a couple months and were presumably fucking, tommy still says “god i hope so” instead of something like “i know you do” which would have established a sense of familiarity between the two. everything about the way they’re physically positioned in scenes and how they speak to each other shows that the writers are not interested in developing tommy or the relationship beyond what’s strictly necessary.

also! something i liked about the episode was how it showcased how much trust and respect buck has for eddie versus how little he cares for tommy’s input. tommy and eddie both tried to talk buck out of believing he’d been cursed, but he only relented because of eddie (the pointed “if you say so”). even tommy recognized that he was incapable of swaying buck and deferred to eddie (“listen to the medic”). buck protested when tommy called him out for picking his skin but quieted when eddie backed him up. tommy doesn’t know best, eddie does. also the way buck kept talking about billy boils despite tommy’s multiple (very condescending and patronizing!) attempts at getting him to stop… buck does not like that man lol

Thank you for sending me such a thought-provoking message. I love this post entirely, but I have one small correction regarding your first piece about Eddie’s journey. From my perspective, it's misconception that Eddie’s gay discovery hasn’t started. I always thought the Buddie feelings realization theories were too fast, too soon since they would be a core couple, and like Chimney and Maddie before, their romantic development would happen spread across the season. However, we’ve been watching Eddie’s gay discovery storyline unfold the moment he said “Tommy’s gay?”, learned he and Buck were on a date, then instead of breaking up, stayed with Marisol. So I don’t believe it’d be rushed if he has a small realization that he keeps privately to himself. Otherwise, I agree with you and all your thoughts.

I don’t want to simply reword everything you said about Buck and Tommy. I will also add that Buck likely believes he owes Tommy their relationship since he’s his first gay relationship. Buck has once remained in a relationship under obligation (Taylor Kelly after they said “I love you”). And he has never made the same mistake twice in his relationships.

Exactly what i thought while reading this prompt. In contrast to Eddie, how restricted she felt being with Eddie and now Everything is so nice and easy and comfortable with Jamie. Dani is living in a book ( a nice fairy tale book). Also, whoever wrote this prompt, If you ever consider writing a Damie fic (or any other fic for that matter) please do it. This one was very good and very detailed and it felt like reading a one shot.

Summary:            Jamie had known she was in dangerous territory from the moment the au pair had stepped foot on Bly soil, but it was this moment that made her realize she was unmistakably, irrevocably in love with Dani Clayton.

A snippet in which Jamie and Dani each experience an "Oh, this is it" moment, so to speak: Jamie's on a date night and Dani's in the flower shop when Jamie gives her a moonflower. Here ya go! One of the things Jamie liked most about Dani was that she listened, really listened. She’d listened when Jamie had told her about her bully of a brother and wisp of a father. She’d listened when Jamie had told her about what therapy had done for her. She’d listened to each and every story about the shitty foster system Jamie could manage to relive. And right now, Dani was adamantly listening to the comedian onstage. 

Tonight was a celebration of sorts. They had been in Vermont for eight months now and their shop had been open for six. They tended to scrimp and save every penny given all the expenses of starting up a new business, but when Jamie had seen a flyer for Dani’s favorite comedian coming to town a few months back, she had taken down the information and purchased the tickets without a second thought. 

Jamie watched as Dani listened - an activity the au pair engaged in with her whole body. Dani’s lips were spread wide in a grin and her eyes were saucer wide; she was leaning forward, literally on the edge of her seat, her knees jumping up and down as she bounced her legs, practically humming with energy. All of her attention was squarely focused on the woman on stage telling a story about West Hollywood life. The gardener might have been jealous, but she wasn’t the type. She simply enjoyed the sight. 

Jamie, for her part, continued to be more amused by the au pair than the star on the stage. The comedian was funny, sure, but it was Dani’s laugh that made Jamie’s own smirk appear. The poor thing was wiping away tears of laughter and it was all Jamie could do not to reach for the hinge of her jaw to turn her face and kiss her through each laugh. She settled instead on biting her lip and squeezing Dani’s hand on their shared armrest. 

Dani squeezed back. She raised their entwined hands to her lips, pressing a soft kiss to Jamie’s knuckles before bending over with more laughter. 

Like it was nothing. 

Like it was breathing, or blinking, or any other habit of living. 

And that was it. 

That was the moment.     

Oh, Jamie thought. 

Jamie had known she was in dangerous territory from the moment the au pair stepped foot on Bly soil, but it was this moment that made her realize she was unmistakably, irrevocably in love with Dani Clayton. It was this moment that she decided it was time to start cultivating a certain white-petaled flower. Dani was worth it and thousand times more. 

*** The days turned to months, the months to more, and before the au pair knew it, a year had passed. A trip around the sun, and she was still here. She was still her. 

“Have something for you,” Jamie said, turning their sign on the shop’s front door to Closed. 

“Oh, yeah?” Dani asked, waiting. She didn’t know what she was waiting for, but for a while now, Jamie had been keeping some sort of secret. The gardener seemed happy enough- happier more and more every day, if Dani was any judge of Jamie’s behavior. She hummed more and smiled more easily at customers. There were more stolen kisses when they were alone in the shop and more excuses to be alone if they weren’t. Whatever it was that Jamie was keeping to herself, it was a good something, so Dani let it be. Jamie would share whatever it was when she was ready. 

The gardener held something behind her back as Dani was finishing a bouquet order. 

With a small clunk of a sound, Jamie set a small vase on the counter, saying “Yeah.” 

Dani looked up and immediately recognized the rare beauty. Her brows came together as she looked from the flower to Jamie. “Is that a moonflower?”

“Yeah,” Jamie said again, but this time her eyes were locked with Dani’s and she somehow sounded almost shy. 

Dani fought the smile trying to form on her lips as her heart pounded. So this is what Jamie had been up to. “They’re really rare, you know.” 

Jamie nodded, her gaze fixed on the counter. She inhaled sharply, suddenly seeming to steel herself, and looked Dani straight in the eyes once more. “I’ve got a problem. Or rather, we’ve got a problem, Poppins.” 

“Oh, no,” Dani said, still trying, but failing to hide her smile. She knew what this meant. She knew that Jamie had been spending months on this, affording the plant her time and attention - her devotion.  

“You see,” Jamie continued. “I’m not sick of you. At all.” Another sharp intake of breath, and this time it was Dani steeling herself, bracing herself. Jamie was looking at her with an intoxicating mix of bravery and vulnerability.  “I’m actually pretty in love with you, it turns out.” 

And that was it. 

That was the moment. 

She had been holding pieces of herself back - small ones, tiny even - parts of her she wasn’t sure she could give, because she didn’t know how much longer the beast in the jungle would give them. 

But no longer.

She may only be able to give Jamie one day at a time, but at that moment, she let herself begin to love Jamie with every piece of her, the beast be damned. However much time was left, she wanted to spend it with Jamie. 

Dani couldn’t hide her smile anymore. Her lips spread into the widest of grins.

Jamie’s eyes fell to Dani’s lips as she reached to cup the au pair’s chin in her hands, and they shared a kiss so like and unlike every other kiss: one of promise, if not hope.

When you started working at Bly Manor, you hadn’t intended to have a role in raising the two children, having initially been hired as a cleaner but after what had happened to Rebecca, you had ended up working as their temporary au pair until the new one could be hired. You split your time cleaning the home and caring for the children, the gardener Jamie having even assisting you with some of your chores, rather than trailing mud throughout the halls as she normally did. You quickly realised the only reason she helped out was to spend time with you, but you weren’t mad, you were fond of her and had spent the previous eighteen months that you had been working together shamelessly flirting without ever admitting to your feelings.

The flirting continued between the two of you until the new au pair was hired. You instantly hit it off with Dani as you worked closely with her to introduce her to her role in the two kid’s life and helping her find her feet in a new country, home and job all wrapped into one. You didn’t mean to distance yourself from Jamie, nor did you have any interest in Dani but you had spent a lot of time with the American, to the Brit’s dismay. Jamie had been watching the interactions between you two, how often you spent time together and how you laughed and smiled at nearly every comment from Dani’s mouth. Although she had no reason to be jealous, you weren’t in a relationship, she couldn’t help but be pained by seeing you growing closer with another woman. She hated how she felt but it was what she needed to finally tell you what she felt for you.

When Jamie saw you wave off Dani on her walk with the two children, she stopped you before you could return to the house.

“What’s going on with you two?” She asked, not starting with a greeting, just throwing the question straight at you.

“Pardon?” You frowned, not even certain what she was referring to.

“You and her,” she said gesturing off in the direction that Dani was walking away in. “Since she arrived, you’ve barely even spoken to me.”

You raised an eyebrow at her. “I’ve just been helping her get used to living here, I’m sorry if you feel like I’ve not been spending time with you.”

Jamie’s frustration overwhelmed her as both hands knitted into her own messy brown hair to try and gain some form of release.

“God Y/N,” she said through gritted teeth, trying to stop herself from screaming. “I really fucking like you.”

Just wondering since I feel like you’d know.. what’s the most sequels books have gotten in a single year? Does that matter? I’m glad we’re getting all these sequels especially for COP and TCH but if ID isn’t one of them.. yikes. There’s no way this wouldn’t be popular enough for one

So, this is hard, because at the beginning sequels were basically guaranteed and in the early years, only a couple of books didn't get them (and most of those books were originally promised books). Things really changed around the time ATV flopped.

2016 releases:

TF- 8 books + 7 specials

MW- 1 book

RoE- 4 books

= so the first year saw seven series and saw 5 of them get sequels, roughly 71%.

2017:

2017 saw 6 new series and 4 of them got sequels, roughly 67%, so a slight decline from the previous year.

2020 was a weird year. The release of VIP brought even more one-shot books as Choices adjusted to the new market. 2020 saw 14 new series but only 3 got (or have been promised) a sequel, although the sequel rate rises a bit to 21%

2021 saw a low of only 6 new series but 3 of them got promised sequels, making the sequel rate rise to 50%.

2022:

TCH- 2 books*

2022 is obviously incomplete, as only 3 books have finished, but so far it is a 67% rate.

2016- 71%

2017- 67%

2018- 64%

2019- 17%

2020- 21%

2021- 50%

2022- 67% 37.5%

2023- 14% (incomplete)

So the numbers seem to be climbing again, now that they have released VIP with early access. I think a safe bet is that half to two thirds of books will get sequels, but it is going to be based on performance, specifically early access/vip performance.

I really hope ID gets a sequel and I think it will. I think it is more likely to get a sequel than MAH (but that could surprise me).

Three of the 2023 books are still ongoing, so their status is undetermined. But of 7 completed series in 2023 only one got a sequel announcement for a low of 14% but 2023 did see two books getting announced book 3s, so that does balance it out a bit.

So with the 2022 numbers and 2023 numbers in, I think we can see about 1/3 of books getting sequels. Not great but better than it was for a while.

is thobm fandom still kicking? damie was the first wlw ship i ever read fanfic for, and thobm fandom is the one i was in before the wilds. if y’all are still out there, and anyone has time to sign a petition to save the wilds, that would be super cool. the wilds s1 came out a few months after thobm, and i know a lot of people i used to interact with watched it, so I’m shooting my shot here lol. prime video unfortunately canceled it last week, so we’re doing what we can to try and bring it back. https://www.change.org/p/save-the-wilds
