What's Next

A quick list of things I would like to work on in the coming weeks, in no particular order:

Revamps (v2.00!) of a couple of my earlier themes; namely Hydrogen and Helium. These are the most in need of updating and refining... My latest magnesium theme actually started out as a revamp of Hydrogen, but it digressed far enough in style that it became its own thing.

An "Interphase" remake. Yep. I'm still proud of some of my older yukoki designs and am considering revamping some of them... I've actually gotten started on this remake but halfway through I got second thoughts about the direction it was going. Here's a sneak peek of what I've got so far:

New layout for xuethms, which also means a public release of my current theme!

Another big gaming database-related Notion template. This one's been in the works for many months, but I haven't had the energy to polish it up for final release. My motivation to work on this fluctuates with my interest in the game -- and (hint) now it's summer, which is a great time to get back into the thick of things and make big bells off of beetles...

A couple of pages. I wanted to try my hand at some uncommon page types, such as media review pages. I'm open to funky suggestions too, shoot away in the comments or in my inbox!

If you've made it to the far end of this post, thank you for your time! 💕 For sticking it to the end, I'll treat you to a non-coding related life update: I'll be starting grad school in September, studying bugs (the non-programming kind) ! I expect things will get pretty busy in the next couple of months as I move my entire life overseas and settle into my new position. I'm nervous about the big changes, but excited all the same too. :) Fingers crossed everything goes well, and I won't end up abandoning my coding hobby in the chaos... T_T

Neutral abt it bc on the one hand I rlly like how it came out but on the other,, one of my favourite things when I make art is knowing what I'm doing and why and everything making sense (at least to a degree) and I just didn't have that in that drawing??? LONG HAIR MARCELLUS!!!!! That drawing specifically is from my m&ms au (tagged on my blog if u r interested 😌) so that's why he has long hair sbdjdnfjnf but I think he could have it in canon too <3 I mean he was just languishing in the ice tunnels for like 400 years or smth his hair probably got super long. It probably got super tangled and messy tho so maybe he cut it all off 😔

Is the city associated with your WoL/OC's starting class the place where their journey actually began? Did they actually come to it from outside as shown in the game, or were they born there? Do they feel welcomed or alienated by the city and its culture?

XIV Culture and Geography Asks

Sort of. Alannah's not from Ul'dah proper, she was born and raised in Eastern Thanalan and her family has lived in the region for generations.

Her relationship with the city itself is both stranger and intimately familiar.

Ul'dah is where she ended up after her family kicked her out, and while it had been in view on the horizon her whole life, it was still a very large culture shock once she was immersed in it. She grew up dirt poor in essentially the middle of nowhere with tumbleweeds and goats for company, Camp Drybone and the Golden Bazaar were the largest towns she'd ever been to, and even then not very often.

So she wanders into this very large population center with all types of people and immense wealth and ways of life that she's never been exposed to before and has no idea of how to go about supporting herself or who to trust. It was a terrifying experience for a sixteen year old girl, let alone one who'd been reclusive her whole life. And she spent the majority of the next two years living homeless there.

At some point she managed to get a job as a dyemaker's apprentice and he let her sleep on the rugs in the back room. And that experience not only taught her how to develop her own special aether-infused inks, but how to interact with people and present herself to the world.

And when she discovered the thaumaturge's guild and their library and wealth of knowledge, suddenly Ul'dah became a place full of the answers that she had always been starved for.

But I don't think she was ever truly comfortable or fit in there. Not back then anyway. Later, as her confidence grew and she discovered more of herself as both a mage and the Warrior of Light, Ul'dah's lofty grandeur that it had once had in her mind seemed to shrink and become somewhat more ordinary.

It was never home, not really, but then her feelings on home as a place are completely skewed by both her family's rejection of her and her extensive travels. Ul'dah is a place where she lived and learned, that forged her into the beginnings of a new person, and placed her in the path of Thancred and the future that awaited her.

But the city doesn't claim her and she doesn't claim it either, they merely acknowledge their shared history. She was never wealthy enough to be embraced by the elite, nor did she remain impoverished in the streets. She blended in with the numerous other hyur, and no one bothered to mark her passing until she later returned with the dubious mantle of hero.

On a more meta level, I built her history and background around Thanalan and Ul'dah because I started the game as THM after completely failing to figure out which class was the healer. And even though I eventually got it figured out and permaswitched to CNJ/WHM sometime after level 40, I still wanted that choice to impact her character and reflect where she came from and how she got started.

So if you've ever wondered why she did a weird pivot from black magic to white magic in her backstory, it's because I wanted to directly translate my irl experience learning this game into her lore. 🤡

Lisen, i get that you wanna be critical n all but that redesign really wasn't it

You practically made your own oc at that point, you could literally give him a new name and it would be 100% ok to use him in any way possible

I know that the colors used in the og annoy you, but they are quite literally an integral part of the shows artstyle, same with ridiculous outfits. What you essentially did is pick up jojo characters and made thm wear normal clothes people wear with no flair or the color of the original

When you critique things, its important to deconstruct what is integral to the subjects identity, what is essential to stay and what can be replaced. A good example is Steven Universe redesigns actually, they are incredible at keeping core elements with quite big and bold additions!

Nah I can handle criticism and I do appreciate the feedback! I’ll check out some Steven universe redesigns for a guide thank you for the tip! I was using other hazbin hotel and helluva boss redesigns for guide but I can understand how you don’t get that impression. I also get where you’re coming from with your other points but I do disagree with some of what you said. I know the colors are an important part of the story and world building, that’s why I went with brown for him! I felt like it fit his deer theme a little better plus brown is still a warm color like red and yellow which are common colors in hazbin hotel and helluva boss. The brown still fits while being distinguishable from other characters and backgrounds. I do like some of the ridiculous outfits but when every other character wears the same outfit I feel like it takes away from the design of characters who have it for a reason/look good with it. In my opinion I don’t really mind when people redesign a character and it looks completely different than the source material when it comes to redesigning a character like this in this context but I can totally understand if you feel differently! Not all my redesigns are going to be wildly different (I think vaggie and angel dust will cut close to their canon designs) but some other characters are going to be drastically different because I feel like the characters could have gone in different directions. And I do apologize if these sound more like excuses I just wanted to explain my thoughts ^_^ (nah grown ass man using ^_^ get him)

It also seems to me that we're constantly evaluating Liam and Olivia on wildly different standards (one can claim that this may be because Liam is a king and Olivia is a Duchess - yet the structure of the nobility in TRR shows that the Dukes/Duchesses play similar but localised roles in their provinces).

If we were really to evaluate Olivia like that, we would find her to be sorely lacking both as a Duchess and a spy. Very rarely do we see her in Lythikos, and most of the time it is - surprise surprise! - when there is a ball, a function or a festival going on! For all her rah-rah-Lythikos-is-the-best-chanting, we actually don't see much of what exactly she wants to do for her people.

Besides a tiny speech she makes when Lucretia discredits her in TRR3, we never see much about her plans for the duchy. At least with Liam we see his plans - for disaster relief, for animal conservation, for EU access; hell, we even see him making plans to compensate the Applewood farmers until their crops regrow. I hear a lot about how much Olivia cares about her people, but the only times you see Olivia interacting with commoners at all is when they are singing her praises about how great she is. I mean, Liam often gets that too from the press and public, but the fandom still wants to call him "sucky king".

As a spy you get all these cool scenes where she wears leather and there's THM background music playing...but lbr what happens to all this intel she manages to collect? Where does it go? What purpose does it serve besides making Olivia stans go gaga over her? Because IIRC, she discovered Operation Swan in TRH1...and the next we hear about it they managed to successfully execute that plan. Very rarely is she shown actually investigating her findings further or passing her intel. The closest we get to such an instance is the discovery about Bartie Sr being the second murderer of Liam's mother...and she gets kidnapped in the process and costs Liam and the MC her vote at the second Coventus Nobillis. Hell, her last scene in TRR3 has her claim that she will research on any laws that could create problems for them later...and we never see her do any of that in TRH lmao.

There is in fact very little we see her do besides collect some intel, and then warm that information with the seat of her ass.

If we're really looking to be fair, we might as well measure the other faves in TRR (and in CoP while we're at it coz fandom magically seems to not care about "commoners" when this series is on!) to the standards we continuously hold Liam to and mock him for, while ignoring the few times canon does bother to talk about what he does.

I made this request several months ago and I had many comments wanting a second part with the song More (K/ DA) and since the problem with the publications is now fixed, I think it’s a good time to write it once and for all before returning to the orders.

In this second part, reader is fused with Evelynn and Seraphine, you’ll understand what I mean.

Days, weeks without the leaders knowing anything about your new singing career. Since you got off the stage that beautiful day, dozens of record producers, even audiovisual managers were at your feet asking, imploring you, to give them a chance in their agencies. After long days and millions of messages per hour, which they played as background music in Mr. Trein's classes, you decided to give this new career a chance in a completely different world from the one you were used to.

Weeks since you last told them about a new song that was being produced with three more members, it seems you were going to be part of a group band, but you didn’t delve much on the subject for confidentiality reasons. The only thing you could tell them is that, in a couple of weeks, and the famous day finally coming, a music video with the respective band was going to be released.

Leona and Riddle weren't very excited. Let's see, don't get me wrong, Leona was very proud with all the little act you put on on stage, you even made Vil himself shut his mouth, 1000 for the effort, not just anyone does it. But he wasn’t very "into" in your music career. Yes, he was happy that you found something to distract you from all these catastrophic events at school, but other than that ... nothing more. Instead, Riddle… he doesn't know much about this whole world, he had an idea, and he was happy that you could meet other people outside of school. Perhaps he would be more excited by the time he waych the music video.

And like I said before… the famous music video release day had arrived.

The leaders were having a routine meeting, almost nothing interesting and very little to report, maybe a few complaints from the cafeteria or flight classes, but as I just said, nothing important. The mirror chamber was on the verge of being clear, faces of exhaustion and disinterest poured out of the doorway when a whirlwind of five multi-colored heads arrived to collapse the seven dormitory leaders.

"Care to explain what this outrageous come for?" Riddle was about to turn his trademark color as he saw his two residents sprawled on the floor after colliding with Kalim and Idia's tablet.

"Wooow, that happened so fast, my head hurts" Azul held out his hand to the white haired boy and helped him stand up, while the tablet flew off and floated in the middle of the room as usual.

Leona and Vil looked at the scene with contemptuous looks, just as their irritation was clearly evident at being pushed by their residents. As for Malleus, who hallelujah had been notified at once about the leaders' meeting, he simply deigned to observe the scene in a mocking way, but never disrespecting his classmates; a little giggle and he was composed again.

"It's out!!" Ace and Deuce jumped off the floor and faced the crosshairs of their dorm leaders. Ace continued to take out his cell phone and enter the conversation he had with you, clicking on the link you sent him a few minutes ago.

"What went out?" Azul, intrigued by his comment, approached the redhead, except that he ended up being dragged out of the room. Each freshman grabbed the arm of their respective leader and led thm into a classroom with audiovisual projectors ... except for Sebek, he simply asked his young master to follow him. In all this tumult, Ace connected his cell phone to a projector, revealing a black screen on a white canvas in the middle of the classroom. The seven leaders were completely lost, some even wondered why they had followed them, ahem… Leona more than anyone.

Now, with the cell phone connected, the speakers at full volume and each participant sitting in a chair, trying to be as comfortable as possible in their pompous suits, and with the lights off, Ace gave play and music began to reverberate throughout room. Multiple vibrant colors invaded the vision of everyone present, shapes, figures and objects began to come out of nowhere and a voice dislodged them all.

The first to appear on the screen, the origin of that unknown voice was a girl with an incredible blonde hair, long and in a ponytail, which if were loose, it would’ve reach the floor. The faces of most of the boys showed confusion, it was obvious that they didn’t know her, much less had you talked about her in one of those short conversations about the video clip. The only ones who knew who this girl with violet eyes was, which matched her purplish top with sparkling blues and a shorts that barely covered her butt, were Vil, Idia and surprisingly Ace.

Without giving many explanations, avoiding distracting others from the girl's movements, Vil commented aloud, seeing Kalim's face when he didn’t understand why he wasn’t seeing one of his great friends first and foremost in the video clip, that the girl was from a female-only academy, much like NRC.

Everyone turned to see the others, even Leona raised his ears when he heard your voice appear for a fraction of seconds, to end up combining with the voice from another girl. This second girl was one of tall build, pale skin with red eyes and bicolor white and blue hair; Unlike the first, she was already known within the music industry but she had never recorded a video clip with another person.

In the middle of the shots of her, Deuce saw your profile hiding behind a mural, even some shots of your hands playing or ... moving your fingers in the air. With the chorus appearing on the screen, tension began to build in the environment. Why weren't you showing up? The directors gave you the ugly eye and left you behind? Why weren't you dancing with the other members?

During the chorus, no matter how high it was, the guys could hear your voice. It was there, it was in complete harmony with the other voices, but at the same time, you weren’t there. For some it was going to sound a bit embarrassing to admit, that they could discriminate your voice from any other, even in the midst of a crowd of people. Azul and Idia had found a video of your little recital and had downloaded it for…the great seven know for what; perhaps to have it in loop for hours. Even Malleus was getting impatient not seeing you on screen, not seeing you enjoying yourself like the other members were showing it.

The video now showed Neige walking down a large red carpet, having people asking for photos and autographs, aside from reporters and paparazzi taking photos. And besides, couldn’t miss the bodyguards, scaring off every crazy fan who threw themselves on him. Throughout that walk, Neige was dedicated to signing autographs left and right, never stopping to look at people. Perhaps the aesthetic they wanted to give him was from a famous and megastar, but seeing this brunette so ... carefree made Vil tense.

As much as the events of the NRC’show have remained in the past, one doesn’t simply forget their rivalry, and much less now that he had to see how his greatest rival, both in modeling and now in music, was part of his first video clip with the person who refused to participate in his musical group. Yes, Vil was dealing with serious problems of guilt and regret.

Again, the only thing the camera showed was your profile, hiding and appearing behind murals. For the last time you came out behind a marble figure, the camera made a 180 ° turn, starting from your back, but it didn’t end on your chest, it was in a downward movement, until it ended at your feet, just at that your sentence ended and your body was left squatting on the reflective floor.

At this point you could see the despair of Kalim and Riddle in their eyes. At the moment of collapse, you made an almost imperceptible movement, turning around and hitting the camera with your open hand and sending it flying into another space, again changing the perspective and the person as the center of attention.

Jack was wagging his tail at all times, he was undoubtedly enjoying the video clip, both the aesthetics and the melody. Obviously, he wanted to see you even more on screen, but inside he knew that at some point you were going to appear, even to blow up the whole video.

Again the chorus appeared, like the first time, you didn’t appear, no matter how many changes of perspective there were. The screen went black, and in a moment of great tension, doubt and nerves, the boys thought the clip was over. Ace and Deuce were about to bolt, ready to beat up and kill the record company that had "hired" and duped you, but a little glint and a hand hovering over a window stopped them in their tracks.

And finally… finally, you appeared in your great splendor. Your hand lightly decorated with a blue ring chained to your wrist was the starting point for a great sequence shot towards your body, revealing your arm covered with a semi-transparent black mesh jacket with purple and light blue highlights, and ending in a black top, purplish with pink and sky blue iridescent patterns. And your face… woow, your face made up like a rising star, cold-toned glitters and shadows, silver pearls around your eyes, and shiny pink lips.

Everyone, absolutely everyone was stumped. Your way of singing, the movements that enchanted the camera, the warm tones that came from your lips; your simple presence blended with the aesthetics of the video. Even singing in Chinese was a nice touch to throw off anyone hearing and / or watching this show.

Kalim, finally seeing you, let out a cry of joy and clapped as he had never done it before at one of his parties. Riddle was proud and couldn't help but smile to see you shine. Leona smirked when no one was looking at him, watching as your head fell into contact with a bed and your whole body merged with the objects and the predominant aesthetic.

Your walk towards a large illuminated door, ending up turning around and appearing in the middle of a room with the other members to give the last chorus, left everyone excited. They had already seen your movements and the way your body moved to the rhythm of the music, as if you didn’t have a skeleton, but watching you dance on the big screen, with a musical group, having better and closer shots was another different experience completely. 

Let's say also, there was a bit of jealousy on the part of the boys when they saw some shots showing you with the other members, interacting and being very touchy. Your smile, as beautiful as it was, that someone else, outside of NRC, was responsible, made the boys' blood run hot.

The room was silent for a few seconds, ending in cheers and applause from the first years. Ace disconnected his cell phone and was ready to make a video call when a message notification echoed off the walls. The guys gathered around the device and read the message, your message.

"Get ready, I'll get more;)"
