Okay, we have now seen the next few episodes of s6, which means it’s time for a long overdue post in which I talk about how much I love Sid Freedman
(let me count the ways)
1. if the show at times can be read as existing in a Conscious Narrative (you don’t say) then Sid arrives as the characters reach their breaking point of wanting to deal with it anymore and gently explains that they can and will make their way through it
2. he’s not an Agent of the Narrative (anymore than anyone else in the cog of the war at the non-decision-making stage can help the role they play in continuing to perpetuate it -- including the surgeons who heal up men to go back and get shot at, or kids who will return to minefields), so much as he is a balm against it, to the best of his abilities. he cannot, because of the force of the Military or the Narrative, discharge a person if he does not believe that they are crazy -- an idea I cannot quite enunciate, but if he’s sending someone home... well, they’ll have lost something irreparable, equivalent to an amputation. as long as he can call the characters sane, they are some measure of okay, even at their worst. we, the audience, may possibly breathe easier for a bit, because they are still strong enough for the Narrative. Sid would know
3. he is Very Very good at letting the waves crash against him if that’s what is needed, to listen if that’s what is needed, and to talk if that’s what is needed. he is also, over time, as everyone else in this here Narrative, in need of healing himself, and I love that this side to him has been explored a couple of times now
4. in an environment where everyone wants to leave the 4077, Sid comes there to feel better! speaking of how one defines sanity in an insane situation, huh?!
5. maybe what I’m getting at is that he is the speaker for some very interesting key elements of the Theme, while still feeling like a great character on his own. he’s not in the main narrative, but when he appears you know there’s probably something big that needs to be Explored in some way (or a poker game)
6. his interactions with all the characters highlight some of their most interesting elements. am personally especially fond of how he speaks with Klinger and Margaret, the respect he has for their equally interesting situations around gender echoes the respect the Narrative wishes to have for those stories. his empathy for them is our empathy for them
7. in the last episode I saw with him -- Mulcahy (the other person whose job cannot be measured in tangible results! someone who is attempting similar healing from a different perspective! religion and psychiatry! I lose a mind - I lose a soul!) recognising his distress and asking him to let go of his Role for a second (his role in the war, his role in the Narrative), and he strips down to a t-shirt and boxers and throws them in the massive bonfire they all create together to overcome their frustrations! wonderful, showstopping. in s5 when BJ was pranking various characters to make others smile! maybe he’s not so wrong about coming to the 4077 to feel better, it seems like a mutual exchange
8. of course, he may be the best person to speak Hawkeye back from a ledge, whenever that ledge is apparent. and he may be at the moment the only character that Hawkeye can really be that vulnerable with (mostly)
9. what a wonderful, wonderful man, and a wonderful character and also Allan Arbus is very attractive
10. interested in the overall ideas around the usefulness of psychiatry, ideals of Masculinity (including not talking about your problems ever), and a sweet, softly-spoken man helping to uncover some of the violence of war in the 50s as seen through the 70s, my one comparison being TNG trying to add a counselor character and not quite nailing it, despite having the right idea in the 80s (I love you Deanna) -- and also the various explorations of the cycles of violence: make someone well enough that they can go out and be violated again, and knowing this and still having to do your best, because an alternative cannot be imagined in the situation... what are you healing people for?

The 100 Highlights - “Exit Wounds” (5x06) ... 2.0
Hi guys. So some of you may be reading this title in mild confusion right now because “didn’t she already do a highlight post for 5x06?” 
And you would be right! I did, indeed, create a highlights post for this episode that you can view here. And I would be lying if I said it didn’t bring me some level of satisfaction in posting it, but - alas - it does not really fit the purpose of this series in the first place ... which was to spur positivity within the fandom for whenever we experience another inevitable meltdown.
My initial purpose of starting this series was, ironically enough, exactly for episodes like 5x06 - the episodes that fandom despises. I did a highlight post for 4x04 last year, another episode many people did not enjoy, in an attempt to put a more positive spin on it and lift the moods of people in fandom. My motivation for creating this series was mostly in the attempt to preserve the sanity of myself and the fandom as a whole.
So, forgive my petty crackpost. While I had my fun with it, it was always my intention to do another, more serious list of highlights for the episode when I gathered up the energy to do a rewatch.
So here it is. The new and improved (????) list of my favourite parts of 5x06:
People of Wonkru, hello and welcome to the 100th annual Hunger Games. I have to say, I did appreciate my wife, Charmaine Diyoza’s homage to THG. She grew up in the early 2000′s, she knows what’s up. Dropping a bunch of parachutes from the sky full of rations? Now that’s a power move. A woman after my heart.
“Two missiles and this war would be over.” “And then what? How many of our people are farmers? How many are engineers?”
Seriously CHARMAINE IS SO SMART. She’s not rash, she’s calculating. And she doesn’t fight needless battles. She isn’t here to kill, she’s here to take the valley. But she’s also willing to negotiate peace in order to reach her goals - she isn’t irrational, and she isn’t cruel. Never have I ever rooted for an “antagonist” on this show more. Every episode she just gets more likable and more relatable. She says everything I’m thinking, I swear.
“In war the greatest victory is the one that requires no battle.” I don’t think there has been a person in power on this show who has ever verbalized such a thing. It’s no wonder Kane is siding with Diyoza. Even if Octavia wasn’t such a tyrant, how could he resist teaming up with the one person who actually practices what he’s been preaching for all these years?
“We’re the only thing that can defeat us.” Why does this line feel like foreshadowing? 
Okay, I have to take a moment to scream (again) about how aggressively into Gaia’s look I am. Damn girl. No idea how you bleached your hair down there but good on you. Good. On. You.
“Gina at Mount Weather. Ilian in the conclave. Me, on that damn cliff.”
Listen. I fucking cheered at that line. I cheered. And I don’t think I have ever cheered for Octavia in anything she has ever done, or said, since maybe Season 2. I am not an Octavia fan. I’ve been pretty vocal about that, but this is one of the few moments during the series in which I could actually understand and empathize with her, because in this episode she voiced everything that the audience has been thinking AND. IT. WAS. SO. VINDICATING.
First of all, shout out to my girl, Gina Martin. You were the realest, and you deserved better. RIP. I don’t think it is actually possible that I could ever dislike any line that acknowledges her.
Second of all, Marie SLAYED the delivery of this line. Her voice actually breaks when she references Echo almost killing her in 4x04. I was trying to place what it was about Octavia in this scene that I liked and I realized: she may be swinging a sword, but that is not Blodreina talking. Underneath that armour is Octavia. And, judging by the way she clutches her stomach, she can still feel the wounds inflicted on that day on the cliff. Now, however, it isn’t Echo who is holding the sword: it’s Bellamy. This isn’t Blodreina holding up a facade to maintain her power; this is Octavia expressing real pain. And I may not agree with how she treats her brother, but this is perhaps the one case in which her argument is completely, and totally valid. 
I don’t know if Marie clutching her stomach like that, right where the scar would be, was an acting choice or a directing choice but I really liked that small detail.
“Why are we even doing this? So your sister can go to war? What happened to us being the good guys?” Thank you, my precious Monty, for being the light this world needs. Now go ditch Wonkru and join up with my wife Charmaine. 
Listen, I cannot describe how initially soothed I was when I heard Niylah’s accent. Finally, someone seeking out my girl Clarke! It felt like old times (and this is coming from someone who never used to give two shits about Niylarke, if I’m honest). *sigh* 
“I’m sorry. It’s just, everything’s so different.” God, my heart BROKE for Clarke so many times during this episode. I feel so much for her and it’s just SO easy to connect with her this season. She’s definitely my favourite character after the time jump, thus far, and I’m loving every second that we get of her. 
I already said that I never really cared much for Niylarke but giving her that black panther was CUTE. Sue Me.
“You saved our lives, again. Thank you by the way.” “That wasn’t me; that was Bellamy.” First of all, my girl is getting the acknowledgement she deserves. Second of all, I will take my crumbs - thank you very much.
I’m not going to lie: The 100 can disappoint in many ways, but the soundtrack never does. Tree Adam’s score was slaying the game in this episode, especially in the scene with Niylah and Clarke. That track was beautiful. It had the perfect amount of softness and nostalgia and melancholy and I loved it.
“How do you explain the sun to someone who’s never seen it?” This line was so eery and creepy HOLY shit. But I loved it, even as much as it broke my heart to realize that the one person who sought Clarke out in this episode was only using her for information. 
“I can still tell when you’re lying.” dark!Niylah - I never knew I would be so intrigued.
“Gaia, what are you doing?” “Protecting the last true natblida, as my order has always done.” BA DUM TISS
That plot twist ... I have to admit that I honestly did NOT see that coming. I was sure that Gaia was shoved straight up Octavia’s asshole. I cannot express how much gratification it brings me to know that Gaia was playing her the entire time. As Murphy would say, “that’s a survivor’s move.”
“I’m not the one you should be afraid of.” Seriously, the story potential this twist opens up for Clarke, Gaia, Octavia, and Madi is just OFF the charts. I cannot wait to see where this goes.
The entire interaction between Gaia, Niylah, and Clarke was simply fascinating. Three woman who I didn’t know I needed to interact this much.
“I don’t enjoy seeing you suffer, John.” “Then why’d you leave me.” I’ve never been a diehard Memori stan (just casually enjoyed it) but goddamn this episode was prime angst material for them. I have such a weakness for angst, my friends.
“You didn’t need me anymore. You were always off doing your own thing with Raven.” “SO WHAT?” YOU TELL HIM EMORI
“When we were on the ring, I was part of something bigger than myself. I didn’t know I needed that, but I did. And you punished me for it.” This is my favourite version of Emori, guys. Remember when we all thought that Emori died off-screen before S5 aired because there was no BTS of Luisa? I’m so glad we were wrong. Her story this season has been absolute fire. A prime example of natural character development following a time jump ... *ahem*
“A spy and a murderer ... with a conscience. You’re right Bellamy, she has changed.” I SCREAMED at Marie’s delivery of this line. It was just ... so on point you guys.
That shift transition from ***** *** (I can’t type it out - this is supposed to be a HIGHLIGHT post) to Clarke packing ... with the same music playing. aasqkqisnsksks I ain’t gonna say a word
“Six years is a long time. Octavia is not the girl from the stories I told you.” Madi’s hero worship is mildly cute but indulging it can’t possibly lead to anything good. I really appreciated this line. And I don’t blame Clarke one bit for feeling like she needs to leave.
“If anything happens to me ...” Give me a moment to recover. I’m Triggered.
But seriously that Madi x Clarke scene was just so beautiful and emotional and heartbreaking. Eliza is slaying the game. and why does lola’s face remind me so much of bellamy in THAT scene y’all know the one. the resemblance is real i said what i said
Clarke looking over to ***** ******* like a wounded puppy ... for the second episode in a row. I AIN’T GONNA SAY A WORD
“W h a t?” THE PAIN IN HIS VOICE i’ll take my crumbs
“No, YOU don’t understand.” GO OFF CLARKE !!! Also, WHO’S READY FOR HAKELDAMA 2.0

I cannot express how much I loved that they showed Madi reacting to having her hand slit open realistically. Like that girl is trying so hard not to show pain but she FEELS it, and she was whimpering. Like, damn, I felt that. Lola did such a good job showing how a child would realistically react to that happening. 
Not to be That Person. But. Bellamy’s hair game marginally improved in his scenes with Clarke. I only know Truth.
THE SLOW-MO OF CLARKE RUNNING TOWARDS MADI AS OCTAVIA’S VOICE ECHOES IN TRIGADESLENG. Y��ALL ARE COMING FOR MY LIFE THAT WAS SO CREEPY AND COOL
“I understand why you lied Clarke. You were just trying to protect her. But Madi no longer needs your protection - she has mine.” I LOVE antagonist Octavia. Seriously. I’m so happy they decided to go the villain origin story route for her, it just makes her so much more interesting. AND SHE’S SO DAMN CREEPY
“I executed traitors. And I made it look like a real defection.” Okay, okay, okay, so was shooting the defectors cold-blooded as shit? Yes. But was it smart? YES. I think Octavia is a bad person but damn girl. Dammmmmmmnnnnnnnnnnn.
Don’t come for my life but I HONEST TO GOD ENJOYED OCTAVIA IN THIS EPISODE. And not because I like her as a person but because she made sense to me with pretty much every move she made. And I’m not used to that feeling with her.
Echo hiding the piece in Karina’s wound. F u c k i n g hell mate. AND WHAT WAS THAT LOOK AT THE END. I dunno but I’m intrigued. 
Sooooooo in case y’all were wondering. I do think 5x06 holds up better on rewatch (as most episodes do). Not all of the episode was bad, as my initial highlight crackpost made it out to be - there were still some good moments. I thought the last ten minutes of the episode were particularly strong, and to be honest all the stuff with Clarke and Memori was A+++. So, definitely not bad all around. And it has a good set-up for the episodes to follow which I am genuinely looking forward to.

Sometimes I'm really annoyed about how the show has white washed Tyrion yet made Dany's character darker like in s5 and s6 they made Tyrion the one seeking peaceful solution against the Slave masters when that was Dany's role in the books I mean yes Dany can be ruthless when she needs to be(which is something she represses in book 5)but she's not Viserys or Aerys the one she's aways been compared to has been Rheagar and it's aways been in positive terms(cont)
So if they have Tyrion and Varys start doubting her sanity when they have previously been two of her most loyal supprters it would be a huge diservice to her character to still have the audience doubt whether she would go mad or not when we have an actual mad queen and a bigger threat we don’t need more badass ruthless Dany moments just for the heck of it we’ve bene shown that many times already what we need is more of her being relatable and human which sometimes the show doesn’t portray well(end)
Im just hoping they don’t have Tyrion disagree with her on this one. Because I feel that a majority of lords, kings and queens would expect what Dany expects - you want me to uproot my army and my resources under my home, i’ll need something to prove your loyalty or cold hard proof of the threat. But with the whole, Tyrion/Varys questioning her sanity I’m worried they’ll make them disagree with her here too, and want her to ‘take Jons word as gospel’ as you put it that the haters want.

I’m lumping in these two asks together because you’re asking me similar things and so to kill two birds with one stone here we are. 
I have to agree with you on the whitewashing of Tyrion’s character. I feel like even within show canon the whitewashing is out of place given the things he’s done in the past. I get that he’s trying to redeem himself which would account for him behaving better but I wish it had been done more transitionally and kept a darker element or two to his character.
The same thing with Dany, because she’s such an internal character in the books we miss out on all her internal dialogue on the show. And while I like the show version of Dany and have come to terms with the differences between the two, like you, I would prefer she had more intimate moments showing her more human side. She doesn’t always have to be the regal queen. Having said that if the leaks are accurate we’ll be seeing a few moments like these this season.
As to the topic of madness, I sort of addressed it yesterday in a reply to a different post. I think what they are trying to do is have Tyrion and Varys be concerned about the perception that Dany is like her father. However, I think the writers have had difficulty in making the distinction between showing that Tyrion and Varys knowing that Dany is not mad vs. being concerned about the perception that she is mad. They haven’t really made this clarification and so we are going about the same thing which is getting tiresome. Especially because we do already have a Mad Queen, we don’t need the will she will she not.
Regarding whether or not Tyrion will agree with Dany when Jon comes asking for the dragonsglass, I would hope he will. He might be a little less skeptical than most because he was at the Wall, but he’s never seen these creatures and suddenly believing in them, even if he trusts Jon, would be odd. Tyrion might want to believe Jon but he shouldn’t say it in public, this should be a private conversation with Dany.
I’m curious to see what Tyrion and Varys actually say after the events in the Reach. I’ll reserve judgment until I watch the episode and see the full context. Sometimes these descriptions don’t provide the right nuance.

7x13: Details
 Okay, just wanted to go over some details in the episode.
1. The number 5. We saw 5 Kingdom-ers at the beginning with the cantaloupe: Richard, Ezekiel, Jerry, and two others. Then when Carol kills walkers in the tree, she kills four with the sign and one more with a knife: 5 total. Probably pointing us back toward S5 for, you know, some odd reason. ;D

2. Candlelight Theme. We saw it with Carol at the beginning when she woke from her nightmare. After Benjamin dies, we see it with Morgan as well. Both are in psychological distress when we see this. Of course, there are Norman’s famous lines about Beth being the light in the dark tunnel for Daryl. Daryl was in serious psychological distress after the prison went down, and Beth helped him heal from that. This kind of lighting almost always signals serious emotional angst.

3. 63 on the wall again. @bluesandbeth told me that in issue 63 of the comic books, Michonne is thought to be dead…but then turns up alive. Hmmm.

4. I wondered if Nabila meant anything specific. It means “Noble or Excellent.” Another thing I didn’t mention on Monday was what she said about burning the garden down. She said the beautiful thing was that, “If you want, it can all grow back. ” They “get to come back,” but it’s always a choice. Carol was making a choice by staying alone in that cabin. She was in a self-imposed Purgatory and wasn’t progressing at all. Now she’s made the choice to move forward and become part of the world (the Kingdom) again. Same with Ezekiel choosing not to fight the Saviors.

5. Benjamin’s girlfriend. Benjamin talked about some girl who helped him with the picture, but wouldn’t tell Morgan anything else about her. A Nonny suggested maybe this was a way of paralleling Benjamin with Zack. He definitely does have a similar, boyish look to Zack. For me, it depends on whether we ever meet this girl or not. If we do, we’ll have to see what role she plays in the show. If not, she’s only symbolic. The thing is, this was more than just a minor detail. Morgan asked Benjamin about her at least twice. They really drew attention to this, so I’ll be interested to see where, if anywhere, it goes.

6. Jerry’s cobbler. Okay, small totally silly note here. I think the cobbler has come to symbolize something good. Maybe happiness, normalcy. We saw it with Carol in 7x02. Only a place like the Kingdom that’s well settled and has a decent food supply could reasonably expect to have or make cobbler. Anyway, Ezekiel told Jerry to leave the cobbler. Yeah, it was a funny–gotta love Jerry’s smile–but also kind of random. I wondered if it was a foreshadow that bad things were afoot. (Yes, that was an extremely lame pun. Someone else also pointed out to me that a “cobbler” is someone who makes shoes. So the cobbler could also be tied to the shoe/foot theory. Just throwing that out there. ;D)

7. The Kingdomers gave the Saviors their guns. We’ve seen this before, as Negan took all the guns from Alexandria. But this made me think of Noah giving up his gun and giving into Dawn at Grady. Not only did that result in disaster where Beth was concerned, but I do think it showed his weakness as a character and led to his death later on. (X) Here, Ezekiel and co give up their guns. Not long after, Benjamin is dead.
8. The Saviors said they were going to “teach them” just like the Claimers. Small detail, but Gavin said, “You have to learn the stakes, so we’re going to teach you.” This not only points us back toward S4 but shows that the “bad guys” in this season are being set up as parallels to earlier things we’ve seen.
9. We again saw the theme of the Saviors killing someone for what someone else did. I thought it was interesting because in this case, it wasn’t supposed to happen. Gavin was surprised when he turned around and Jarod had shot Benjamin. He was supposed to kill Richard, as Gavin originally said. This has become more than just something intentional on Negan’s part.
10. “It’s As or Fs, no Is.” “One, not more not less.” I was a little confused by this part. Assuming these are letter grades with A being the highest and F being “fail,” and I’m assuming I = Incomplete, then it makes sense in the dialogue. They’re saying the drops have to be all or nothing. But I was reminded of shirt Daryl wore at the Sanctuary. It had a red A with what looked like an I super-imposed over it, which doubled as a handle of sorts. Not sure if this is what they’re going for, or even what it all means, but it’s what I thought of.

11. Carol planted tomatoes. We’ve seen tomatoes a lot, especially around Morgan, and most recently at the Kingdom. The thing I noticed was that on this package, it says, “Boston pickling.” I thought it was a pickle reference. @bluesandbeth told me that this company most often does cucumbers, not tomatoes. This may even be an incorrect pairing–something they put together for the show. A double pickle reference and paired with the tomato reference. ***Update: I need to fix the above reference. I misunderstood the information sent to me. Boston Pickling isn't a company. It's a type of cucumber. Im looking into it further but just know for now that we can't find any evidence that there is any such thing as a Boston pickling tomato. That type of plant, from what we've seen, doesn't exist. Just wanted to clarify. Thanx for the correction @bluesandbeth! 💖***

12. Family Doctor sign in background. Lots of people have sent me doctor or ER signs that have been in the background. I guess I’m finally starting to pick them up on my own. This one was behind Morgan, specifically when he found the missing melon. You know, the one that was separated from the others and hidden? As though a doctor or medical institution may have had something to do with that?

13. “Benjamin, get your gun up.” Okay I’m gonna be a total TD geek about this. They called attention to this twice. Richard says it when they first stop at the road block, and then Morgan thinks about it again after Benjamin’s death. It’s what makes him realize that Richard was the culprit. Richard says it just as he secretly separates the hidden melon from the others. I couldn’t help but think of the fact that Dawn’s gun simply wasn’t “up” far enough to have shot Beth. So right when the melon was separated from the others, “Benjamin, get your gun up.” I’m probably really reaching. Meh. Whatevs. It’s what it made me think of.
14. Babies Crying - Richard mentions this several times when telling Morgan about the camp he used to be in. It made me think of episode 5x09 where we not only saw an emphasis on Judith crying from 7x01, but we also heard echoes of it all throughout the episode. Now we had an emphasis on it here.
15. Finally, @sparklepoodles pointed this out to me. It originates in 7x10, when Daryl keeps Richard putting his plan into action that would have gotten Carol killed. Not only did they foreshadow Richard’s death through dialogue. (Richard: I would die for the Kingdom. Daryl: Then why don’t you?) but look at this picture:

Tell me that’s not a foreshadow of Richard’s death and, more specifically, to Morgan strangling him.

16. The bull rider picture. I wanted to do this one last because it’s the most intriguing to me. I don’t have a specific theory, but I just wanted to share some observations. This is important, not only because it’s exactly the kind of detail they like to hide symbolism but it was also emphasized in the quiz on TTD.

I had to research bull fighting and found that I knew very little about it. Basically, it’s all about a fighter (commonly called a matador) showing off his skill by killing a massive, angry bull. It’s a brutal sport and they do kill the bull by the end. Usually. In the first stage, the bull fighter observes the bull, looking for strengths and weaknesses, and takes steps to weaken it physically, often by stabbing it to cause injury and blood loss. In the second stage, more steps are taken to weaken the bull, including stabbing it with barbed sticks that will remain in order to weaken its strong neck and shoulder muscles. The killing, in which the matador must several the bull’s spinal cord, happens in stage 3. It’s very dangerous for the matador, of course, but almost always fatal for the bull. (There are some special cases where they might let the bull live, but that’s rare.)
I don’t see a whole lot of TD things in this symbol. I’m side-eyeing a few things, but overall, I think this is a very strong Morgan symbol. In fact, it’s probably a very negative sign for Morgan. Morgan is the matador. Benjamin, however, is not the bull. Richard is. How do I know that? Well, for one thing, Morgan didn’t kill Benjamin, but he had to use his strength and skill to kill Richard. Another thing I read? After the bull is finally killed, it’s body is dragged through the arena by a team of mules. Kinda like this:

And then there’s the fact that there is a blue prohibition sign (the circle with the line through it) over the entire picture, as if to warn that this would be a very bad thing for Morgan to do. To me, that just points to his downward spiral even more.
It did occur to me that the three stages of the bull fighting could represent Morgan’s bouts with sanity, but since he’s the matador, I’m not entirely sure that works.
And the things I’m side-eyeing? @bluesandbeth pointed out that how the bulls are killed isn’t so far off how walkers are killed in the show, which I think is a good point. You could, of course, relate this to Beth specifically because they didn’t stab her in the brain. (I had a Nonny point out that Morgan stabbed Richard in the brain despite an obvious head injury, which is a super-interesting observation - X).
The only other thing that caught my attention here is the red cape. It’s the traditional symbol of the matador, which is how you can tell (other than the bull) that this is a picture of a bull fighter. But I immediately went back to the red cape/poncho/whatever-it-was in Beth’s cell.

I’m not sure how that would tie into this, unless it’s as anti-parallel. Morgan killed Richard, but he might have saved Beth.
And then there’s the fact that the prohibition sign on Morgan’s painting is GREEN. Just saying.
So anyway, like I said, no specific theory. Just observations.
