About the situation with the previously mentioned reposter, reposts in general, and the fandom. This is mostly about the russian part of the internet, the dark and fearsome place.
This post is very long, so I’m hiding it under the cut.
To sum it all up:
If you see drawings (fanarts) for the game Enderal and for the rest of the SureAI games on the russian social VK, published not by the authors of the drawings or not by their art groups, pages and communities, then they are placed against the will of these very authors.
About the rhetorics (mostly for the Russians that stumble upon this post): what people on VK call repost (share button) is an actual reblogging or retweet. In fact, a repost is re-uploading something not by its owner. Now let's start. The retelling is quite detailed. Also, a warning: although I can retell this whole thing in english from scratch, the post is translated from russian with the help of almighty google. I don't want to bother much with this and spend my energy on it. Most of the mistakes I still fix, but the sentence structure and phrasing might seem weird.
The man (hereinafter "character T"; we do not mention his name because he is only interested in your attention to his person) took under his wing a long-abandoned community (Enderal themed), asking to be a moderator. For several months he was posting stolen drawings (without permission and credits), until his vanity drove him into a trap: with a request of "reblog for reblog" (wanted to promote his own fan-creation) he messaged a small russian community of artists interested in the SureAI games. Naturally, seeing his reposting activities, everyone was utterly indignant. He was incredibly lucky that my drawing was the last one published on the dash of his community. Again, no credit. I left a comment urging him to remove the stolen things and explaining the common truths. To which no one answered, but suddenly a link to my tumblr appeared. I wrote another comment telling to delete again, and again no one answered me. When he had to start talking to me, Character T decided that it was a good idea to load a girl (who was so lucky to know both of us a bit) with the work of a negotiator. I leave it to you to judge the "honor and dignity" of this character and his decision. I scroll forward: he agrees to delete my work, while rolling out a post consisting of articles of the civil code, in which he puts the meaning “I reposted, am reposting and will continue that, because the law allows me”. At the same time, the negotiator girl gets tired of working as his secretary. I already intend to contact him personally, but I find myself in his blacklist. It would seem, "Well, calm down, hedeleted yours." But his intention to repost further stunned everyone. Naturally, the time has come to inform the foreign authors about this chronic stealing.
A new location was unlocked in our amusing adventure: a server of the game developers SureAI on Discord. There, one of the artists from whom he stole called him out, without mentioning the names (yes, the character T was active there, whilst annoying the local inhabitants). He responded after a while, again rolling out his cart of articles on the legality of reposts. He also managed to threaten me personally with something. In general, he was kicked from the server of the developers for lack of culture and propaganda of copyright infringement. Further, another foreign author tried to contact him personally, but in the same way received a cart of laws. In the meantime, the English-speaking part of the fandom artists decided to write an official letter of complaint, attaching all links to posts to be deleted, and listing the authors with whose content the character T is strictly prohibited from interacting in the future. This letter was tried to be sent by a German artist, who specially registered there, but she stumbled upon some tech difficulties. Firstly, she was blocked by the owner of the stealing community, where the character T was appointed as the moderator. Her page was empty, the name was not Russian - he thought it was a bot, I can understand that. She then dropped the complaint letter to the support of VK social itself. Even tried to message the stealing community specifically but another lag made it impossible. (and this was required according to the new "rules" of the character T, according to which it was decided to play. "So that your complaint was considered ..." and so on.)...
Sensing something is wrong, character T made an attempt to contact some Russian-speaking authors himself in the meantime. And they told him the same -- that he steals, and not “shares” for some “purpose”. And here comes an interesting thing: the phrases "well, something needs to be posted to fill the community" and "but I am not on their Facebooks, I found it on Yandex"(that's russian google). That is, our drawings turned out to be just a filler, because something needs to be posted. Searching by image is difficult, but he still has to post! Something. Anything. What for? I have an explanation and an answer to this, but since this is the purpose of the character T - to draw attention to his fan-creation, I will not mention it 👌🏻 Another of his phrases was that due to the increased attention to his community now he HAS to credit the authors 🤦🏻♀. In general, he banned the Russian-speaking artist, whom he contacted and received a well-scented bucket’s content on his head (and well-deserved of course).
Now let's return to the official letter of complaint from foreign artists, which never reached the stealing community, and after all it was sent by the Russian-speaking author L. This time the character T was able to read it, but as expected, he refused to remove reposts, said that the artists were arrogant, accused of gatekeeping and again expressed his intention to repost not only without permission, but also against the will of all these fandom authors (38 people). After all, he has a great goal - to popularize games and the universe in the ru-segment.
The same or the next day the owner of the stealing community contacted me (who had previously lost interest, abandoned it, and a year later gave it to the character T). The owner asked what was happening, I explained, and passed on the letter of complaint from foreign artists, which the German artist could not send because he blocked her. That I explained to him too and he unblocked her. No reaction to my explanations abot the character T followed, but we’ll come back to that later.
And now we decided it’s time for our last resort -- we contacted Nicolas (the main screenwriter, the owner of the rights to this universe and the main figure of the fandom as a whole). Here I will digress from the main line and note that interested people have dug out both the provisions of the Berne Convention and the laws of the Russian Federation, which the character T chose to ignore in his activities, hiding behind only those that are convenient for him. Now let's return to Nicolas, who had to take a break from vacation because of this circus. As it turned out, character T, sensing the smoke, came running to him first. But alas, Nicolas was on the side of the authors (who would have thought). As a result, we almost decided that hurray, it helped, because posts with pictures disappeared from the wall of the stealing community, and character T even disappeared from the list of moderators (I will return to the stage with the owner of the community: I assume it was his work). But it was clear that it was too early to celebrate the victory.
Change of location: again the server of the developers on Discord. After the kick of the character T, three days later, a brand-new account appears, which broadcasts about the character T in the third person using Google translate “ if he had not been pressed upon, he would repost peacefully in his community of a thousand subscribers. And now he will attract some audience of a dozen more groups and will repost there too”. Naturally, without direct evidence of the second coming, no one have kicked him yet.
On the same day, the VK support told me that the most effective weapon in our case is the DMCA form. This is inconvenient, but it works. Moreover, the stolen has already been removed from the stealing community.
Then people came across the news - the stealing community advertised a new community of the character T, which was shaped exclusively for reposting other people's drawings (and there were already several works, including mine). The adv post called to support the character T “and his work”. Naturally, in the comments, I and other people urged not to support this. We even managed to explain the situation to some random person. After that the post was deleted. We don't know who deleted the post (still the character T or the community owner).
At this point, I ask Nicolas to message the tharacter T again using the simplest words that reposts cannot be allowed without permission. At all. Even with links attached. Doesn't help because the main now-not-stealing community shares a new post of the new one stealing community again. That is, even the main copyright holder and owner of the entire thing is not a figure of authority for the character T. Summing up -- “I will “popularize” your fandom against your wishes. The laws allow me. "
But after a while, the reblog from the new community is removed from the main one.
And again, the change of location: to the discord of the developers, where the character T himself comes back and writes something (under the new name ofc as his old account is banned). He declares that he will now repost to some huge audience of 300k people (before that there were 200, and even before that 100, yeah), he is outraged by the complaint letter from the authors with the ban on reposting, he will deliberately not credit, and also he wants to reupload my fanfiction somewhere. After that, he was kicked again 🥾.
Naturally, the entire audience is shocked, the character T literally became famous and crowned himself with a clown wig in just a few days, and now the entire fandom and the informed ru-segment hates him. The retelling is over.
Almost. Now I thank google translate for the help above and I'm gonna retell even more without it as this information is rather new. He wrote his own “explanation post”, where he somehow found relevant addressing the sexuality of one of the authors who called him out, called Nico indifferent and passive regarding this situation, insulted literally everyone but him, the white knight, whom we all should be grateful to for his will of promoting our content. I facepalm very hard. And he reposts art to some small communities but no one gives a shit (surprisingly so, huh?). He adds the links to the authors. Now I don’t want to give him any attention anymore, I have some work to get done.
Here comes the part about the and for community itself (google translate helps me again):
For the artists:
For the people registered in VK there is a "Nemesis" algorithm (dropdown - report - copied content). It will want a link to the previously published content on the VK as a primary source. Its effectiveness is still in question, but if someone tried it, then share your experience. For the rest, there is a dmca form that wants passport data (the only one I know of that asks for it), which I personally do not want to share, but in general... It's up to you to decide. Advice: Include readable text with @ of your page, community or yourself in your watermarks. Thus, an adequate person will always see where to go for the primary source.
For the readers/viewers:
Fandom existence is based on respect for other people's work. This work is the reason fandoms exist. If you like the drawing, then praise the author, support them in accessible ways (like - comment - subscribe - send a link to a friend(reblog the thing) - give some moneyz). People will be pleased, honestly. And if you disagree with something or you go "Ew" for other reasons, then just walk by. This is, in fact, all that you can do. If you have ambitions, ideas and “I need to fill my dead community with something” (you are considering taking the author's drawing and placing it somewhere yourself), then you ask for permission and accept any answer. There is no other way. Otherwise it's a violation of the law.
Why reposts (= re-uploads) are harmful I think there's no need to mention, but still:
First of all, it drives away traffic from the authors. It doesn't matter if fanart can be monetized or not (spoiler alert: it can). Example: If a figurative reposter hadn't taken away figurative content, then a potential viewer interested in this content would go to search for it himself. And would have found it posted by the author. And then it is already possible to take a closer look at the other work as a whole, and even give the author money so that they draw something personalized for this viewer personally. That’s an example. It seems to be clear. Artists on the Internet care about their traffic, which is responsible for audience growth and all subsequent opportunities. This is the basics.
About monetizing fan content.
It depends solely on the developers / authors of games and books (original owners of all rights). Sometimes the ban on monetization hangs for some time after the release of the game (as was the case with Hades), sometimes you can sell keychains / posters / whatever with fanarts on them right away. And sometimes you can't, everything is individual here. Again, I think it is clear that if a viewer finds the original image posted by the author themselves, then this viewer has more chances to buy merch with this image. After all, the author will definitely add that the drawing is available as a merch. Reposter -- never. He does not know that, he found it on Yandex/Google.
Specifically about me and my community:
You know that my main audience are not russians. I have already abandoned my russian community once. Would I want to disappear from there again? So far, there is no such desire. People I have there are nice and friendly, despite the small number. How much do I really care about reposts of drawings on an objectively dying or already dead fandom? I'll leave it to you to decide. I have been here since the 2016-17, with me the fan activity started, and with me it will end. Everyone who is interested in SureAI games knows me. And although I have the permission from the devs to monetize fanart and fan content in general, it is obvious that $20 from posters and magnets every few months is not my motivation. I am here because I love the game universe and its characters. I make my own thing, quietly rejoicing, and I don't look around much. Reposts are evil on a different level, and not on this one. Does T's intention of re-uploading my fanfiction or even rewriting it somehow thrills me? I don’t care at all. Let him read a well edited and thought-through text for once. But I doubt it will help a little.
In general:
My subscribers / readers / followers know where to look for my updates. A thinking person that sees a repost will go and find the author themselves. Be it pictures that they see, text or something else. Those people who don't think are obviously not interesting for me as an audience. Other authors share this position.
Finally, end of this text. It has taken me 4 hours to write this all in russian, maybe another one to edit the google output and add more things AND almost one week of my time to deal with this all (and don’t forget other authors involved, they spent a shitload of time on it too). From now on my position is “time is money” and if the character T resurfaces he’ll have to pay me for the attention he seeks, lol

Dating and sex during COVID – Sex Ed for Bi Guys
Original image source
Published January 8, 2020.
This is the SFW version of this post. You can view the sexually explicit version here on Pillowfort.
Based on my conversations on r/BisexualMen and our Discord, many of bi+ and bicurious men date and explore their sexuality despite the pandemic. Many – not all – public health guidelines are the equivalent of abstinence-only sex education, shaming people who follow anything other than the strictest of practices, providing no information for those who take risks on how to minimize those risks nonetheless, and dismissing costs and risks of being deprived of intimate human contact. Here are tools to decide what risk level you’re comfortable with if you choose to date or have sex during COVID-19, and to reduce risks that comes with activities you choose to undertake.
It’s tempting to judge or shame people for making decisions that are risky during a pandemic but if shaming worked, we would have stopped HIV dead in its tracks in the 1980s. Shaming people is bad public health policy that leads to worse outcomes, while meeting people where they’re at has been proven to work time and time again.
The science and best practices on the pandemic evolve constantly, and I am not a healthcare professional. It’s possible information in this guide will become outdated. Keep tabs on the current situation with the virus and on the most up-to-date public health recommendations in your area for minimizing pandemic risk.
The obvious
When there is community transmission in your area, it’s safest to not meet anyone indoors besides your own household and to follow to the letter public health guidelines. Your safest sex partner is yourself, followed by someone from your household. Any kind of prolonged, close physical contact with someone from outside your bubble is risky. There can be legal consequences also to breaking public health ordinances.
Risk
Risk is relative and it’s a spectrum. It has different dimensions too: you can act safer on some dimensions to somewhat offset risks you take in other dimensions. Yet safety has costs. When people take risks, it’s often because they have decided the cost of safety in that instance – boredom, loneliness, touch starvation, sexual frustration, deteriorating mental health, etc. – was higher than risks. People make these calculations all the time. Stay informed to make enlightened decisions about what risks there are to your health and that of others, and how they can be reduced. Then choose what risks you are willing to take and which you aren’t.
Men having sex with other men more often during the pandemic and increased substance use are linked. Think of getting mental health support if you’re using to cope, especially when the result is taking risks you wouldn’t take otherwise. You deserve support, even when your behaviour involves higher risk. Continue your usual STI prevention methods too, like condoms, PrEP, regular testing or other prevention tactics you use, even if you f**k less often. My friend works in a STI clinic and they are swamped despite the COVID pandemic.
Talk with people you plan to meet
How do you each protect yourselves from COVID? How many people are in your respective bubbles? How many people do you each see outside of that bubble? Under what conditions? Were you tested for COVID in the last few days? What risk level is acceptable for each of you? How fast or how slowly do you want to take things? In what ways do you want to be in contact for now?
Talk with people in your bubble
COVID can infect people you share spaces with. So tell these people you are thinking of dating or maybe even having sexual encounters, explain how you are planning to reduce risks, and agree with them on what risks are acceptable and what safety practices they want you to take when you do this. It is possible they won’t be comfortable with anything other than online contact, or masked, physically distanced outdoor meetings. Also, maybe it’s not possible for you to share details of your romantic and sexual life with folks in your bubble: maybe you’re closeted, for example. Sadly, their safety is on the line when it comes to this. Whatever decisions you make, weigh the risks you take keeping in mind you are exposing them to these risks also, and that they trust you too keep your bubble as safe as possible.
Tactics for minimizing risk
Knowledge. Read more complete documents than this post on safer sex during COVID and look for more up-to-date information. Check news and public health websites to know what community transmission rates are in your area, along with current public health guidelines and ordinances. The higher community transmission rates are, the more risk-aware you need to be. Learn where and how to get tested as well.
Original image source
Number of partners. Having a single dating or sex partner that you integrate in your bubble is safer than seeing a new person every week, and it makes intimate physical contact less risky. Also, group sex is very risky when it’s with people from outside your bubble, so discuss with participants what other tactics you can use to reduce COVID risk.
Physical distance. Many contacts can happen from a distance. You can message dates and partners. You can video chat. You can meet and keep a 2-meter distance. When sex is involved, you can sext each other, trade nudes and videos, roleplay fantasies or have a domination/submission relationship over chat if you’re all into that, put on a live cam show for each other, etc. These activities are safe from COVID (be mindful of privacy and leaked chats, pics or vids). In the same room, you could decide to keep at least a two-meter distance, and put on a sexy show for each other as well. If you eliminate physical distance, you will have to rely on other tactics.
Original image source
Environment. Outdoors is far safer than indoors. A small room is riskier than a large room. A space with poor ventilation is riskier than a well-ventilated space. Many people meet outdoors physically distanced for the first few dates before deciding if they want more intimacy. I would never advise you to break the law or more importantly, to neglect safeguarding unwilling people from witnessing your sexual activities but technically, sex outdoors is safer than sex indoors...
Barriers. A mask covering your mouth and nose makes a difference, even if you’re physically right next to each other or f**king. Unless you have access to N95 respirators https://www.menshealth.com/health/a34247889/n95-vs-kn95-masks-covid/ and know how to use them properly, your mask protects others from your own breath and saliva, and their mask protects you from theirs, but not the other way around. So everyone having their mask on is safer than some people taking off their masks. If you’ve ever wanted to roleplay those masked post-apocalyptic or riot sex fantasies, now has never been a better time! Also, anonymous sex carries other risks than COVID, but glory holes are an effective barrier.
Original image source
Washing. Wash your hands before and after touching each other. Same with your bodies when mouths and hands have been roaming on them.
Sex acts and positioning. The closer your faces are to each other, even masked, the riskier the proximity is. So some positions for sexual intimacy are less risky. Kissing is the riskiest. If you’re not having sex, but would like less risky physical contact that still has some intimacy, sitting back-to-back while holding hands and talking about intimate stuff is an option. Semen and feces can contain the COVID virus, but it’s unknown if vaginal or anal sex can transmit it – wearing condoms along with keeping semen out of your mouth and your mouth off buttholes could help (on top of reducing STI and unplanned pregnancy risk). Oral sex and sex positions that keep your faces away from each other (doggy style or 69, anyone?) are less risky. BDSM practices that involve masks, doing thing to someone’s back or behind, or any practice where faces can stay away from one another, can carry less risk also.
Testing, vaccination and immunity. Getting tested for COVID in the days before a physical meeting helps, but it’s not fool-proof. As vaccination is rolling out, get the vaccine as soon as you become eligible for it. Science on how well or how long people are immune to COVID after an infection has uncertainty, but recent findings are encouraging. Dating and sex among people who have recently recovered could be a risk-reduction tactic.
For many bisexual, pansexual and polysexual men discovering their own sexuality and coming to term with their orientation, COVID put a stop to any exploration they had been dreaming of. You deserve the tools you need to protect your health, no matter your decisions. A healthcare practitioner that you trust with not being judgmental is an invaluable source of advice too. I hope you find the right balance between meeting your needs for companionship, love, touch, intimacy, and sex, and staying safe during this pandemic.

by Rhonda Moffit, Moffits-Mad Hatter Adventures March, 2020
With such very busy lives, every so often we love to unwind with a weekend adventure. This recharges our batteries and allows us to find inspiration and appreciation that propels us into the forthcoming work week and beyond. Our most recent weekend adventure took us to Martin’s childhood, as his relatives lived in Hannibal, Missouri, when he was a boy. He, much like Tom Sawyer and creator Mark Twain, ran around this historic Mississippi River town as a youngster having fun and learning life’s early lessons. What many do not realize is the incredible history of this locale….so read on and see what we discovered.
One of the places that I, Rhonda, book for our clients that visit Hannibal that has had great reviews is the Garth Woodside Mansion Bed and Breakfast. We were anxious to check this place out for ourselves.
John Garth and Helen Kercheval were married on October 18, 1860. They had two children, John David and Annie. Sometime after the Civil War broke out, in 1862 or 1863, Garth moved his family to New York City. There he was engaged in banking, brokerage, and manufacturing. They returned to Hannibal in 1871, and Garth started a successful business career. Garth purchased a farm southwest of Hannibal and constructed his Italianate Second Empire summer residence about a mile outside of the hustling city in 1871, which he named “Woodside”. On the farm he raised and bred shorthorn and Jersey cattle.
As a businessman Garth entered many ventures. He was one of the organizers of the Farmers and Merchants Bank and served as its first vice-president. He became president in 1880, a position he held until near his death in 1899. He was also president of the Hannibal Lime Company, president of the Missouri Guarantee Savings and Building Association, and president of the Garth Lumber Company in Delta, Michigan. His wife and daughter funded several memorials to him, including the Garth Memorial Library Building, dedicated in 1902, and a tower and set of bells at the Trinity Episcopal Church.
Son John perished at the age of 21, sadly, while he was undergoing an appendectomy. Family photos adorn the walls of Woodside.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name of Mark Twain, not only grew up in Hannibal but had multiple visits back to visit friends during his lifetime. One of his childhood friends was in fact John Garth. Samuel Clemens visited Woodside on several occasions, preferring to stay with his friends. He had his own particular favorite bedroom in the house and spent many hours laughing with the family in the downstairs parlor. When he published Life on the Mississippi, Clemens sent the Garths a copy. John Garth replied, “Thanks for the book. Each and every one at Woodside has enjoyed it greatly.” A note from Clemens to his manager requested a copy of Huckleberry Finn to be sent to the Garths upon its release. John Garth died in 1899.
There have only been six owners of the mansion since it was built, and most all of the original furnishings are still used. This brings me to the beds. Oh, the beds! This particular bed is valued at $55,000, being one of the most valuable in the United States. It is said that Mark Twain slept in this bed and the hand carved craftsmanship is beautiful. Other furnishings are original to the house as well, and it is truly like stepping back in time. Because Woodside has changed owners so infrequently, many of the belongings of the Garth family remain. The current innkeepers/owners (very friendly!) allowed us to roam the entire house and grounds and we were able to see everything the house has to offer, which is a lot.
After exploring the mansion and visiting with the llamas (resident livestock), we ventured into downtown Hannibal and decided to eat at the Mark Twain Dinette. Martin regaled me with tales of when he was sent by family to the Dinette to buy and bring home a jug of their homemade root beer. They have made the root beer onsite since going into business over 76 years ago, and it does not disappoint! If you visit, you should try one of their pork tenderloin sandwiches- it is enormous and one of the main dishes that they are known for.
After dinner, Martin walked me around the Mark Twain historic buildings- my own private tour.
It was fantastic. We then journeyed the short drive back to Woodside and enjoyed the rest of the night with complimentary wine, a fireplace, and a large jetted tub that I really wish I could bring home with me.
The next morning, we were provided a yummy breakfast and had some wonderful conversation with other guests. There are cottages at the rear of the property and they provide a beautiful view and private hot tubs on their decks. These are quite popular, and from what I gleaned from conversation with the others many like to return a couple times a year just to rejuvenate.
The next part of our adventure took us to Lover’s Leap. The views from this historic location are remarkable, and it was a beautiful day to behold.
Next, we traversed to Mark Twain Cave.
Made famous in Mark Twain’s writing, this location is the real deal. They offer tours, so of course we were all in. We went 250 feet below ground and saw everything we could see in the miles of tunnels made of limestone. Samuel Clemens even signed the cave wall when he was young- if you look in the center of the following image you can see “Clemens“.
Many, many people have been to the cave over the years- here I am, wandering around trying to get a feel for it- and loving every minute.
There are over 260 passageways, and it is easy to get turned around in the labyrinth. There is also a “marriage rock” within that has a story. There was a woman who discovered one of her ancestors had signed the cave wall and she had her wedding in the cave under the signature as an homage to the relation. Also look carefully in the photos for the signature from 1865. There are so many echoes from the past.
The Mark Twain Cave was discovered in the winter of 1819 when Jack Sims tracked a panther into what appeared to be a small den. He later discovered it was an extensive underground network. Twain included a lot of the cave in his book “Tom Sawyer”, as he found it to be a true source of inspiration as a child. He and friends used to light candles and enter the cave to explore it. The “Discovery” entrance is the original entrance (green sign) that was used, as you can see in the image.
Also notable:
Joseph Nash McDowell – He bought the cave in 1848 and was the owner during Mark Twain’s childhood. He is infamous for putting his recently deceased daughter into a copper cylinder and placing the cylinder in the back of his cave hoping to further his theory of human petrification. When Hannibal residents learned of this act, they begged him to remove her and bury her as was deemed proper.
Here is an image of where both McDowell’s daughter’s corpse was stored and where Jesse James placed his signature in the cave.
Jesse James — After a botched robbery attempt he hid out in Tennessee. In 1879 he decided to head for Independence, MO to assemble a new gang. On his way through, he signed his name in the Mark Twain Cave which is dated September 22, 1879, sixteen days before he robbed a train in Independence with his new crew, and only three years before his death.
The cave was a remarkable adventure and we spent a lot of time exploring it.
Also in Hannibal is the home of the “Unsinkable” Molly Brown. Molly was born in this house just a few blocks away from the home of Mark Twain. Margaret Tobin Brown was an activist and survivor of the Titanic. Born in 1867, she was the daughter of Irish immigrants. In her lifetime, she and her husband rocketed to fame during the Gold Rush. In a lifeboat as the RMS Titanic sank, Molly shared layers of clothing and urged others to survive the disaster. She used her status to inspire others to fight for children’s and worker’s rights for the remainder of her life.
For all of us Disney fans, Hannibal is also a special place. It is the birthplace of voice actor and musician Cliff Edwards, better known as the voice of Pinnochio’s Jiminy Cricket. Edwards was born in Hannibal and left school at the age of 14 to move to St. Louis. He taught himself to play the ukulele, choosing it because he said it was the cheapest instrument in the music shop. He was nicknamed “Ukulele Ike” by a club owner that could never recall his actual name, and it stuck.
Hannibal has so many stories, and there is so much to do and to see. If you visit between April and November you can even take a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi courtesy of the Mark Twain- they even offer dinner cruises. We plan on returning again soon, and before we departed, we returned to the Mark Twain Dinette to grab a root beer for the road. OK, we actually bought a case to take home. What a wonderful getaway!
Hope you enjoy sharing our adventures- be sure to give us a like, a comment, or at least have a drink of this fabulous root beer next time you are in Hannibal for us!

RECENT NEWS, RESOURCES & STUDIES, late June - early July 2019
Welcome to my latest summary of recent news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & ecommerce! This covers articles I came across from June 21 to July 13, although some may be older than that.
I may not be able to do the next update until early August, given the upcoming Etsy search changes and my schedule, but I will continue to tweet big news, & may do a short post or two here.
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
On July 9, Etsy announced it would be giving “priority placement” in US searches to items that have no additional shipping cost starting July 30th. Obviously we don’t know how this will really work until we see it in action, but the outcry has been predictable. I summarize the facts in my blog post here. There is also an admin Q&A thread, a survey, and plenty of news coverage:
Etsy's Free Shipping Push Sounds Like a Marketing Gimmick (Motley Fool, through Yahoo)
Etsy faces backlash over attempt to push free shipping (Engadget) “And while a large business can take advantage of economies of scale to lower the shipping cost, that's not usually true for an individual crafter who may only sell a modest number of items.”
Etsy sellers aren’t happy with the platform pushing them to offer free shipping (The Verge) “Implementing flat shipping fees in prices can pose a challenge to international sellers who ship worldwide. Cambridge-based artist Katie Fuller, whose run her Etsy shop since 2015, says including the cost of shipping in her products would put her at a disadvantage. “If I [raise my prices], then I’ll be making my prices uncompetitive for customers elsewhere. Most of my customers are in the UK; it wouldn’t make sense for me to do it so it sounds like I can wave goodbye to my American sales.”
Etsy Will Start Pushing Sellers To Include Free Shipping (Fortune)
Why Is Free Shipping So Important to Etsy? (Inc.) “... 75 percent of consumers today now expect their delivery to be free even when orders are less than $50 according to a survey published by the National Retail Federation earlier this year. That number has increased from 68 percent last year.”
As marketplaces compete with Amazon on shipping, sellers are shouldering the burden (Digiday UK) “Like Etsy will soon do, eBay said it does prioritize items that ship for free in its search results and offers sellers pricing tools to help them better figure out how to factor in shipping costs.”
Etsy Stock Is Getting a Lift as It Jumps on the Free-Shipping Bandwagon (Barron’s) “Etsy stock rose 4.3% to $66.78 Tuesday afternoon as the S&P 500 was about flat. ... Roughly 70% of items sold on Etsy in the U.S. weren’t available for free domestic shipping in the first quarter, according to Etsy; it wants that number closer to zero.”
Remember, Etsy started boosting items that ship free to Canada in Canadian searches in January, but they never announced it, or gave us tips, or tools, etc. We won’t know if the US version will work exactly the same way as the Canadian until the former is released; a short test in the US in late May-early June generally took the first three rows of search for free shipping items, even if they weren’t all that relevant.
ETSY NEWS
Just in case you didn’t receive an email, Etsy is making changes to their policies. They include the fact that all new listings will be set to auto renew as of July 25 (but you can change them to manual), and info about their advertising tools. Keep an eye on the latter - I think they might be releasing something new soon.
Etsy will be releasing upgrades to the sales tool in August, including the ability to offer sales in specific countries only. Hidden in that post is also a promise to increase international advertising & promotion: “We’ll also continue to invest in the success of our international markets. In the coming months, you’ll see increased marketing efforts across many channels, all aimed at bringing more buyers from your country to Etsy.” (I suspect this is related to the free shipping announcement which came a few days later; they want to reassure non-US sellers that they won’t lose too many sales.)
Etsy released new attributes and sub-categories again, including in Accessories, and Bags & Purses.
Shops in vacation mode are now showing up in search, as of July 10. The number of shops found in a shop search nearly doubled, to over 2.8 million, but only about half of them have active listings. No word on whether or not this is a permanent change; for many years, shops with no active listings have not been searchable on Etsy.
Etsy is working on personalizing search by using image recognition identifying 42 different styles, and the engineers involved are presenting a paper [pdf] on this topic at a technical conference. They are about to start testing this, so expect to see more personalized results soon. I need to do a short post on this topic alone, but right now I need do some more research before that will be possible. I found this interesting, though: “Since sellers don’t reliably convey a product’s style in their descriptions, scanning text alone produced results that were “okay but not great,” says Fisher.” Quit being unreliable describers, folks! 😁
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
A common question: how long does it take to get to page 1 of Google search? Answer: it depends, plus it might not even be worthwhile if the search doesn’t convert. The article explains why.
How to fix the 5 biggest SEO mistakes website owners make.
Writing a title for Google search is very important, and many people do it wrong. Here’s how to do it correctly.
Long-tail keywords: definition, why & how. And even more on why you definitely should aim for very low-volume keywords. (I do a lot of this.)
Somewhat advanced content: how Google's neural matching works, and how to optimize for it. “Based on the information Google has given us about neural matching over the past nine months, it appears to be most active when users have a problem they don’t know how to describe... To capture these opportunities, you need to know what problems your target audiences are facing. You also need to pinpoint what information is going to solve their problem, help them accomplish tasks and make decisions.”
Link building doesn’t require a lot of technical skill, but it does involve marketing skill. Or some public relations (PR) skill. [video & transcript] Remember, some types of links are definitely better than others. (If you don’t know what link building is, read this.)
Advanced content for people who code their own sites: Google says you won’t be able to use “noindex” in robots.txt as of September. (Bing never recognized it.)
How to game Google to make negative results disappear. I don’t expect anyone here will be paying for these services, but it is useful to see what you are up against when you are trying to get your own website to rank. More of us may also be up against AI-generated spam in Google rankings sooner rather than later. Someone is always trying to game Google.
Was there a Google algorithm update around June 19th? Maybe. The big update at the beginning of June hit the Daily Mail hard, and the so-called “diversity update” apparently didn’t change much.
CONTENT MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA (includes blogging & emails)
The best time to post on social media depends on the platform, your target market, and what you are posting.
Sell health products? Beware of the changes to Facebook’s algorithm, which are designed to limit views on fake health claims.
Facebook outage gave insight into how their machine learning process describes your photos. “... a lot of internet users don’t realize the amount of information that is now routinely extracted from photographs”.
Facebook will be reformatting their Business Page layout, & removing some sections, so make sure you check this out & move any content you want to keep by August 1.
What works best on Instagram has been changing; here’s what you need to keep up with. Brand engagement rates on the platform have been dropping this year, likely due to the increased competition. Get some of that traffic back with 8 SEO tips for Instagram.
Want people to watch more of your YouTube videos? (Pro tip - that’s part of the search algorithm, so you should.) Here’s 3 things you can do to get people to stick around longer.
LinkedIn has some good marketing tools, including ad tools & analytics. They’ve also recently changed their algorithm to show you more things you might be interested in, as opposed to just the things that go viral site-wide, among other changes.
Twitter ends tweet geotagging, supposedly due to low use.
A judge in Hawaii ruled that repinning a photo on Pinterest can infringe copyright.
ONLINE ADVERTISING (SEARCH ENGINES, SOCIAL MEDIA, & OTHERS)
Retailers are spending less on YouTube ads overall, possibly due to the US struggles for brick & mortar stores, as other sectors are actually spending a bit more than the previous year.
Amazon’s share of the online ad market is expected to increase to 8% by 2023, compared to 3% now.
STATS, DATA, OTHER TRACKING
For tracking activity on your Facebook page, set up Facebook Analytics & Facebook Attribution.
Advanced content: new coding tools in the Google Search Console.
ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS
Amazon’s Prime Day is actually 2 days this year - July 15 & 16. Apparently it is now the official start of back to school shopping for many people.
Beware of Alexa if you care about privacy & data retention: Amazon admits that Alexa data is kept “indefinitely”. “...for Alexa requests that involve a transaction, like ordering a pizza or hailing a rideshare, Amazon and the skill's developers can keep a record of that transaction. That means that there's a record of nearly every purchase you make on Amazon's Alexa, which can be considered personal information.” (Google Home is not necessarily better - they are letting subcontractors listen to your random conversations, not just your instructions to the device. “According to the whistleblower, the recordings presented to them are meant to be carefully annotated, with notes included about the speakers presumed identity and age.”)
Walmart’s ecommerce division may lose as much as $1 billion this year. Their brick & mortar business is still doing fine, however.
You can now “try on” Gucci sneakers through its app. Expect to see more of this happening fairly quickly, which is something that people who sell clothing, accessories & jewellery should be watching closely.
A. C. Moore is launching a new handmade marketplace, which you can sync to your Etsy & Zibbet listings. So it looks like that was their reason for investing in Zibbet a few years back. It’s not yet clear that they’ve put the work in to make this successful, but we’ll have to wait to see how it looks once it is launched, and how much they advertise it.
BUSINESS & CONSUMER STUDIES, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
Dark patterns: how websites manipulate people into buying things they weren’t shopping for. [NY Times article - paywall after your limit of free monthly articles.] “... researchers developed software that automatically scanned more than 10,000 sites and found that more than 1,200 of them used techniques that the authors identified as dark patterns” including outright lies.
Call-to-action phrases [infographic] that can help your pages convert. These work on web pages, emails, social media etc. My favourites are in the “lower-risk” section; I don’t think enough articles focus on this aspect of conversions.
Wedding gift buying may be changing as traditional wedding registries drop in popularity. Apparently lots of people want cash to pay for their own expenses & trips now.
MISCELLANEOUS (including humour)
Great list of marketing definitions you will find helpful if you do much industry reading & research. (Pretty sure I posted this before, but it has been updated.)
Chrome is becoming more & more like spyware; the author suggests using other browsers.
The Wayback Machine now compares current web pages to their previous versions. “One of the best uses of this feature I can think of is to track changes in privacy policies.”
How not to design a payment app: make it easy for anyone to change the password.

It is estimated that there are about 20 million e-commerce stores selling products on the internet globally today and generating more than one trillion USD in revenue. The world’s largest markets for e-commerce are the United States of America, China, the United Kingdom, etc., with electronics, fashion, books, and tickets being the top categories for e-commerce. The key advantages of e-commerce circle around the fact that it removes the limitations of time and distance. In the process, e-commerce usually streamlines operations and helps to achieve lower costs. Consumers are shifting their preferences from physical to the online mode today, and to meet this demand, several brands have started working towards optimizing their online presence, protecting their brand equity, and driving profitable e-commerce sales growth. Examples of some online marketplaces include Amazon.com, Alibaba, eBay, and Etsy.
In recent years, there has been tremendous growth in e-marketplaces. However, with the rise of these e-commerce websites, the menace of counterfeit products has also increased manifold. The size of the problem posed by the counterfeiters is astounding. According to the estimates of FBI, Interpol, World Customs Organization, and the International Chamber of Commerce, approximately 7 to 8% of the world trade every year is in counterfeit goods. The problem of counterfeiting not only puts brands at risk of their trademarks, brand value, and goodwill getting damaged but also puts consumers at the risk of receiving sub-standard quality products, which may ultimately affect their health and wellbeing.
Counterfeit Products Online
Counterfeit goods can include fake designer clothes, bags, watches, accessories, perfumes, pirated DVDs, CDs, smartphones, computer games, and many more. They can also include medicines and components of automobiles and aircraft.
Counterfeiters have also taken note of the growth of the online ecosystem and have adapted their approach accordingly. The growth of e-marketplaces has also helped the counterfeiters sell their counterfeit goods using these platforms. In an e-marketplace, product or service information is provided by multiple third parties, whereas transactions are processed by the marketplace operator. Consumer transactions are processed by the marketplace operator and then delivered and fulfilled by the participating retailers or wholesalers. In general, since e-marketplaces aggregate products from a wide range of suppliers, the selection is usually wider, availability is higher, and prices are more competitive than in vendor-specific online retail stores.
Apart from e-commerce websites, counterfeiters have also started creating fake websites that mimic the look and feel of the genuine brand’s website. Some fake websites can be used by scammers to trick consumers into paying for goods that will never arrive and also to steal the consumer’s credit card and bank details. These fake websites can look very convincing, and it may be difficult to tell them apart from the actual website.
How to Spot Counterfeits Online?
Looking for counterfeit products on e-commerce websites requires a specific strategy to be involved. First, the geographical region where the counterfeits are most likely being sold needs to be identified. Thereafter, the most popular e-commerce websites in that region have to be identified. For instance, Amazon is the most popular in the United States and Taobao in South East Asia.
While searching for names that are identical or similar to a company’s brand or product name, or when searching for counterfeit products on these e-commerce sites, one should type in the following keywords that could allow quick identification of counterfeit products:
Brand name/Product name + ‘Grade AAA’
Brand name/Product name + ‘Replica’
Brand name/Product name + ‘Inspired’
*The search for a brand or product name should also be done in local languages.
Some useful indicators that counterfeit or unlicensed products are being offered for sale are as follows:
The products are sold at a price much cheaper below their market value;
The seller is not part of the official distribution or authorized channel;
The seller has a large number of listings and many units for sale; and
The product is listed several times, with a wide variation between prices for each listing.
A more recent way of spotting counterfeit products gaining popularity is through Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered image analytics. The AI relies on an algorithm to compare images and read text information. An example of this technology is IBM’s Crypto Anchor Verifier, which has combined blockchain technology with AI to verify authentic products. It relies on neural networks and video analytics to detect counterfeits. It analyses the properties of products to identify whether they are authentic or fake. The solution can also run on smartphones, making it easy to use and cost-effective.
Dealing with the Challenge
Most often, several e-commerce websites are willing to work with brand owners to take down counterfeit products that are being sold on their sites. Some of them also take product authenticity very seriously and have even launched their guidelines to inform the users and sellers that the sale of counterfeit products on their platforms, including any products that have been illegally replicated, reproduced, or manufactured, is strictly prohibited.
E-commerce sites also provide general terms and conditions in their agreements with sellers, including ad hoc policies concerning the liability for selling of counterfeits, thereby promoting the responsibility of the sellers concerning the goods sold.
Another approach is requesting an immediate take-down notice to the e-commerce website whenever a brand thinks that its Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) have been infringed. It is a more proactive approach and is extremely useful in countries where Intellectual Property (IP) enforcement is challenging or online infringement is too widespread and requires prompt action on the part of the proprietor. Usually, the documents that e-commerce sites would need to be submitted along with the take-down notice are as follows:
Proof of Identity – Business incorporation certificate for companies, identification document such as a passport for individuals.
Proof of IP Ownership – IP Registration Certificate or Copyright Recordal Certificate is necessary.
Webpage Links – The exact links to the web pages of the infringing listings and details of the listings that you require to be removed.
The e-commerce site will then handle the complaint according to its policy and terms to remove the counterfeits. Usually, the alleged infringer will then receive a notification concerning the IPR complaint from the e-commerce website. The alleged infringer can submit a counter-notification showing that he or she is an authorized party or can confirm the case. In case of a counter-notification, the IPR owner can either accept the counter-notification or submit the dispute case. According to the policy of the e-commerce sites, the company may have created specific programs where IPR holders can register as a member to provide in advance IP ownership by filling in a standard form notice. The dispute will be handled through this program, and they will decide whether the listings will be deleted or not. (For example, eBay follows this system under its VeRO Program).
Best Practices: Integrating E-Commerce Counterfeiting in IP Strategy
The battle against counterfeit products online can only be won with an effective IP enforcement strategy that makes room for an action plan against counterfeiting. The strategy has to be a blend of not only protecting your IP beforehand but also monitoring the marketplace for counterfeiters actively.
Online marketplaces, search engine results, and social media should be monitored regularly, and infringements acted on quickly.
Trademarks should be registered in the jurisdictions where the brand sells, manufactures, or even transports its products.
Domain names need to be registered that cover the trademark plus associated products to reduce the chances of cyber-squatting.
IP should be registered with the customs authorities of each country where the brand trades since they are the ones who can prevent counterfeits from entering the market at the very first point of contact, i.e., the borders of the country. Most countries today have in place a system of recording one’s IP with the customs.
Takedown notices, cease and desist notices, etc., should be utilized as and when needed to prevent counterfeiting at the first instance.
When counterfeiting happens in a country that is unknown to the company, the help of local IP experts should be sought. They are usually familiar with infringement cases and have close relations with enforcement bodies such as customs, investigators, and the police. It is worth noting that many counterfeits are advertised in local languages or posted on local websites.
Educating the consumers is imperative. Consumers are a significant ally in minimizing the sales of counterfeit goods. They need to be made aware of the risks of buying from unauthorized sources.
Online counterfeiting can heavily impact any company, affecting revenues, trade channels, relationships, customer experience, marketing effectiveness, legal liability, and more. Ignoring it is not an option since both the brand’s reputation and goodwill are at stake. Fortunately, taking action can be fairly straightforward. Implementing best practices can work efficiently for any brand. To effectively stop counterfeit sales, the strategy must focus on both distribution and promotional channels for counterfeit goods, i.e., the e-commerce websites as well as the physical channels of trade. ✅ For more visit: https://www.kashishipr.com/

While most of the time its men seeking a first experience with another guy, it can also be about exploring sex with women or people of other genders. While gay men know the world of hook-up apps for men, many bi guys might not be. Also, for bisexual, pansexual, and polysexual men, there are options that are more interesting for us than for monosexuals (folks attracted to a single gender). This post is a brief guide to the most interesting options to get started. You must be at least 18 years old to use these apps. Also, I’m in Montreal, so the size of the userbase for each app in your area might differ.
Quick pointers
Have good photos. Smile on them. The more photos you can put up, the better.
Mention early on in your profile what will make you stand out. What kind of person do you hope will contact you? Put forward your qualities and interests that would grab their attention.
State clearly what you are looking for, but don’t be a jerk about it.
Read people’s profile and mention something that you liked from it when you message the person.
Take the initiative and message people who catch your eye. Ask open questions that give them a chance to talk about themselves. Reply including some information the other person can engage with.
Do not send a pic of your junk unless the person told you they’d like to see it. It won’t take you long on hook-up apps to see why that’s a problem.
The male hook-up apps
These apps have many similarities. They are for men: some are more trans-friendly than others, but they acknowledge little gender diversity. They show you a grid of guys near you that you can contact. They allow profiles without a face pic unlike most other dating apps, which discreet/closeted guys might appreciate.
Grindr is the inevitable one, as it has the largest userbase of all hook-up apps for men. Most guys who are into guys end up on Grindr at some point or another. It’s meh for trans men and it has a reputation for being toxic, but you can meet good people on there still. It has a filter based on “tribes”, but it lacks features that set it apart for bi men.
Scruff also has a large user base. It’s geared towards hairier guys and people who like them, but not exclusively. It is friendlier than Grindr (for trans guys too), but expect some toxic stuff still. It’s more interesting for bi guys than Grindr, because you can tag yourself as bisexual and filter to see other guys who have done so.
There are more options with smaller userbases; they might be dead unless you are in a major U.S. or world city. Jack’d is known for being friendlier to people of colour – racism on male hook-up apps is a major issue – and people can select (and filter) a “bi/straight-curious” scene. Hornet adds a social media feed; you can hashtag yourself as bisexual and search by hashtag, but no bi guys were online in my area when I scoped the app out. GROWLr has a larger user base; it caters to hairy, bearded men (“bears”) – even more so than Scruff – but it has no bi-friendly features.
The dating apps
These apps are more dating-oriented, but many people use them for hook-ups also. They are not restricted to a single gender, but some are more gender-inclusive than others. Typically, the app presents you with a person’s profile, and you swipe right or left (or a variation on that) depending on whether you’re interested in them or not. When the other person also likes your profile, the app notifies you that you matched, and you can strike up a conversation. Unlike male hook-up apps though, face pics are usually mandatory.
Tinder has the largest userbase. Straight people use it the most, but there are people of all sexual orientations on it, and it has inclusive gender options. You can set the app to show you people of all genders, but Tinder tends to throw a truckload of women at you and few other people when you do that though. It makes attempts at inclusivity, but it wasn’t built from the ground up for that. Tinder lacks features that let you focus on people with similar interests and values, or other bi people also.
OkCupid has been friendly to bi and non-monogamous people from the get-go, and it has a large user base. It has a matching system in which you answer multiple-choice questions in an attempt to match you with users who have similar interests and values, and you can write detailed profiles. Like Tinder, it throws more women profiles at you than anyone else when you indicate your interest in multiple genders (it’s gender-inclusive). You can hide your profile from straight people if you’re worried about outing yourself. Although there are many search filters, you can’t filter for specific sexual orientations.
Hinge lets you put up your answer to three different questions that are a way of letting people know something about you. Their shtick is that people can like a specific answer or photo, providing a conversation starter and more to go on than profiles on Tinder. It’s gender-inclusive and it gives you a good gender balance when you tell it you’re interested in everyone. It’s reasonably well-populated also.
Feeld and #open embrace people attracted to multiple genders, and they offer many gender and sexual identity options. Many people seem there because they want to explore their sexuality. They have features for couples and make it easy to look for a threesome, although a single person looking for just one other partner is fine also. Feeld seemed more populated than #open in my area.
BiCupid is exclusively for bi people. You’re unlikely to encounter biphobia or be outed, but you won’t be able to meet gay or straight people through that app; it also lacks gender-inclusive options. Despite the similar names, it is not affiliated with OkCupid. BiCupid limits a lot of features for non-paying users though: you can’t be the first to message another person, and you can’t restrict the search radius to less than 320 km (and profiles are not sorted closest first).
Bumble is similar to Tinder, except only women can message men first; it also has a feature for people looking for friends rather than dates. It did a better job at showing a good women to men ratio, but it didn’t seem as populated as other Hinge or Feeld in my area.
This should give you an overview of apps that are worth checking out for a bi, pan, or polysexual man. Although the hook-up and dating scenes have moved to apps in this day and age, there is something to be said still about meeting people the good old-fashioned way: in person through social activities. This is a topic on which I’ll expand in an upcoming post.

Traffic Control Box Art Wrap - City of Sunrise Business and Entertainment District Sunrise City Hall – 10770 West Oakland Park Boulevard Contact Email: [email protected] Call Type: Public Art Budget: $500 per selected artist design
Project Summary
The City of Sunrise seeks applications for artworks/designs that can be reproduced as vinyl wraps and applied to up to seventeen (17) traffic control boxes in the City of Sunrise’s Business and Entertainment District. Selected student, emerging, and professional artists will be paid $500 per design for an approved final design and licensing rights that will enable the City to reproduce the design on one or multiple traffic control boxes in the City. This opportunity is open to visual artists, illustrators, designers and otherwise creative individuals working in any medium, as long as the final artwork can be translated and digitally reproduced on a three-dimensional vinyl wrap.
The goal of the project is to help brand the western portion of the City of Sunrise as a business and entertainment destination and the best place to live, work and play while also enhancing Sunrise’s public spaces by adding vibrant works of art to utilitarian surfaces that are in high visibility areas and/or are often targeted by vandalism. These pieces of public art can enhance the visual character of our city, promote community dialogue, and turn ordinary spaces into community landmarks.
This Call to Artists is the second phase of the Traffic Control Box Art Wrap Project in Sunrise. In October 2020 a total of twenty nine (29) artworks were installed on traffic control boxes in the center portion of the City of Sunrise. Unlike the current project, the first phase did not have a specific theme. Click www.sunrisefl.gov/YourArtHere to see images of the artworks from phase I of the project.
Eligibility
Applicant must live in the U.S.A.
Applicant cannot be a City of Sunrise employee or elected official.
Artists younger than 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian co-sign the Artist Letter of Intent.
Design Specs:
Artists skilled in any arts medium whether it be painting, drawing, photography, graphic design, animation, etc are invited to participate. Artists can submit up to seventeen (17) images for consideration. Submit your design(s) with the following specs.
Size: 144"X 66"
Resolution: 300 DPI
Theme
The designs must represent the brand of western Sunrise as a business and entertainment destination and the best place to live, work and play. The artists should look for inspiration in the assets within the Business and Entertainment District. This four square mile area is located on the west side of the City of Sunrise from Flamingo Road to the Sawgrass Expressway neighboring the Everglades.
The Business and Entrainment District includes the largest and most successful outlet and value retail mall in the continental United States - Sawgrass Mills. Across from the mall there is also the 20,000 seat BB&T Center, one of the finest arenas in the country and home to the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers. Another major asset in western Sunrise is the Sawgrass International Corporate Park, one of Florida’s largest corporate parks (650 acres) home to regional, Latin American, and global headquarters. There is also over $2.3 billion new mixed-use projects in development within this area. Because of these assets, this area hosts more than 28 million visitors each year from all over the world and it is known as a major business and entertainment destination. Click www.sunrisefl.gov/YourArtHere to see a map with images of the Businesses and Entertainment District.
In addition to the “Business and Entertainment Destination” theme, the designs must also be family-friendly and suitable for the public realm. The artwork submitted must integrate the front, back, sides, and top of the box to capture the interest of those that drive, ride, and walk by. The City also requires the designs to be unique to the City of Sunrise and not have been utilized in other traffic control boxes and/or utility box projects.
Artists Selection
As many as one (1) to seventeen (17) artists can be selected for this project. Experience in vinyl wraps or public art is NOT required. All artists will be required to submit design proposals for initial review and selection by the City’s staff and approval by the City Commission. Once selected, artists will work with City staff and the City’s selected printing company to make any necessary revisions to the design prior to printing. The final artwork must be submitted as a high quality digital file to the exact specifications provided by City staff.
If the artwork is not inherently a digital file, artist must submit a high resolution scan or photograph of the work, suitable for use. However, if the Artwork does not maintain acceptable quality when digitally enhanced and the issue cannot be resolved, the City has the right to reject the Artwork and be released from any obligation to compensate the artist. Artists will be compensated after the Artwork is submitted to the City in the final template and resolution requested to the City's satisfaction. The artist is not responsible for printing and installation of the traffic control box art wraps. The specific location of the traffic control boxes will be assigned by the City.
Artists will be required to sign a Letter of Understanding granting the City reproduction rights to the Artwork. The artist will retain the copyright and other intellectual property rights relating to the Artwork, but will grant the City, unlimited, perpetual, and irrevocable right to use or reproduce the Artwork in any non-commercial manner or media whatsoever. Designs must be unique and the artist submitting the designs must be the creator and owner of the Artwork and possess all copyrights and custody of the original work and therefore have not copied, reproduced in any way, or otherwise infringed upon anyone else's intellectual property rights.
Dimensions and Locations of Traffic Control Boxes:
- The boxes are of various dimensions. The contractor that is going to be hired to print and install the vinyl wrap will be responsible for measuring each utility box and working with the City and the artists on the design template to fit each box. Regardless of the specific box size, artists must keep in mind that the design must look good on all four sides of the traffic control box.
- The locations of the 17 traffic control boxes that are being considered for this project are identified in Exhibit A.
-The wraps are intended to last at least 5 years but may be removed at any time at the discretion of the City. While the City will aim to remove any tagging or vandalism, deterioration may occur and thus the City cannot guarantee that the wrap will be restored to its original condition.
Wrap Design Guidelines:
Designs must be appropriate for display in public spaces and viewing by a general audience
Designs should not aim to blend into the surrounding streetscape, but should stand out artistically to the passers by
Designs cannot include political or religious content; any breach of intellectual property; trademarks; images of illegal activity; advertisements; logos; signage; promotion of any business, organization, individual, or product; or involve the attachment of objects to the boxes
Designs must represent Sunrise as a business and entrainment destination, be family-friendly and unique to the City of Sunrise
All designs will be subject to review and approval by staff
Selection Criteria
Artist designs will be selected based on the following criteria:
Designs that best represents western Sunrise’s brand as a “business and entertainment destination and the best place to live, work and play”
Artistic quality and vibrancy of submitted designs
Appropriateness of artwork in scale and imagery to be visually effective on public utility boxes

TikTok's Chinese Owner Put IPO on Hold After Warning
ByteDance Ltd., the Chinese owner of popular short-video app TikTok, put on hold indefinitely its intentions to list offshore earlier this year after government officials told the company to focus on addressing data-security risks, people familiar with the matter said.
The Beijing-based social-media giant, last valued at $180 billion in a funding round in December, had been weighing an initial public offering of all or some of its businesses in the U.S. or Hong Kong, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.
But the company’s founder, Zhang Yiming, decided it would be wiser to put the plans on ice in late March, after meetings with cyberspace and securities regulators in which they asked the company to focus on addressing data-security risks and other issues, the people familiar with the matter said.
The company had other reasons for delaying the listing. It didn’t have a chief financial officer at the time, a person close to the company said.
ByteDance’s cautious approach contrasts with that of Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Global Inc., which runs the country’s ubiquitous car-hailing app. Didi pressed ahead with listing plans in the U.S. despite suggestions from the cyberspace administration not to amid concerns that some of its data could fall into foreign hands, The Wall Street Journal reported.
After Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi made its Wall Street debut, Beijing said it plans to tighten rules for homegrown companies looking to raise money overseas. WSJ’s Yoko Kubota takes a Didi ride to explain what the crackdown means for China’s tech titans and investors. Photo illustration: Ang Li
Didi raised $4.4 billion in late June but is now the subject of a cybersecurity investigation and has since had its main app and 25 others it operates ordered removed from Chinese app stores.
The Cyberspace Administration of China, the nation’s internet regulator, and the China Securities Regulatory Commission didn’t respond to requests for comment.
Chinese authorities have been stiffening enforcement over the country’s technology companies since November, with a sweeping antimonopoly crackdown, and new rules to govern data collection and cybersecurity practices. Several other companies, including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and online delivery company Meituan, have been caught up in the dragnet.
One concern in Beijing has been that data collected by China’s tech companies could be compromised as a result of greater disclosure associated with a U.S. listing. The authorities have also been cracking down on improper collection and use of data to protect consumers’ interests.
ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming assessed that the time wasn’t right for an IPO, people familiar with the matter said.

On Tuesday, China said it would tighten oversight of offshore listings. The securities regulator is drafting rules that could require offshore registered companies to seek regulatory approval before selling shares in foreign markets, with the cyberspace administration leading interagency scrutiny into IPO candidates to make sure their plans don’t risk national security.
On Saturday, the agency proposed amending its own draft cybersecurity-review rules to include a requirement that internet companies with more than one million users undergo a cybersecurity review if they are looking to list abroad.
Previously, Chinese companies didn’t typically need the cyberspace administration’s permission to list overseas. But toward the end of 2020, as U.S.-China tensions deepened, the administration began requiring some technology companies to inform it about possible overseas listings and seek informal approval, people familiar with the agency said.
In ByteDance’s case, Chinese regulators never called outright for a delay in possible share offerings, people familiar with the matter said.
But regulators were concerned about the data-security compliance of ByteDance’s apps in China, the person close to the company said. During the meetings, the regulators were eager to understand how ByteDance collected, stored and managed data, according to people familiar with communication between the two parties.

ByteDance runs apps used by hundreds of millions of people in China, including short-video app Douyin and Jinri Toutiao, or Today’s Headlines. Personal information collected by Douyin can include mobile-phone numbers, birthdays, real names and ID numbers.
Given Beijing’s concerns, ByteDance’s Mr. Zhang assessed that the time wasn’t right for an IPO because of the political and regulatory environment, the people familiar with the matter said.
On April 23, Bytedance said in a statement on its social media account, “After serious research, we think the company does not fulfill the necessary requirements to go public, and currently have no such plan.” The company didn’t provide further explanation for its decision at the time.
Bytedance, whose shareholders include Sequoia Capital and KKR & Co., is one of the world’s most valuable startups. Unlike Didi, which had chalked up losses for years, Bytedance’s financials meant it didn’t have to hurry to list, said people familiar with the company.
The company told employees in June that its revenue last year more than doubled to $34.3 billion as advertising on its platforms grew, while gross profit rose to $19 billion.
ByteDance has had previous run-ins with regulators. In early 2018, Beijing shut down a joke app, Neihan Duanzi, run by the company on the grounds that it contained vulgar content. Mr. Zhang responded with a lengthy social-media post apologizing and promising to add more censors.
Beijing-based ByteDance was last valued at $180 billion in a funding round in December.

This year, ByteDance was publicly called out by authorities for a variety of infractions including excessive collection of users’ personal information and unsuitable content.
Bytedance was among 13 internet companies summoned by financial regulators and told to adhere to much tighter regulation of their data and lending practices in April. It was also among nearly three dozen Chinese tech companies that made public pledges to comply with antimonopoly laws that month.
In May, the company’s 38-year-old founder, Mr. Zhang, resigned as chief executive, joining a group of tech leaders who have stepped down as the government increases pressure on the sector.
ByteDance has also faced pressure from U.S. regulators. Last year, the Trump administration raised concerns that data its TikTok app collects from users could be shared with the Chinese government. TikTok denied that could happen.
The Biden administration revoked in June a Trump-era attempt to ban TikTok in the U.S. But TikTok still faces a broad review of apps controlled by foreign adversaries to determine whether they pose a security threat to the U.S.

Artist designs will be selected based on the following criteria:
Designs that best represents western Sunrise’s brand as a “business and entertainment destination and the best place to live, work and play”
