My brain literally would not let me rest until I got this out of my system, so here we are.

Okay, so - Future Donnie's canon design sure is a thing. I actually love the concept, mechanic aesthetic is great for Don, but I'm not crazy about the all-black waders/overalls they're just...they're a choice. Definitely a choice. So I figured it was time to update those old Future Donnie designs I made awhile back (which, surprisingly, weren't too far-off? I got the pants pockets right at least, lol)

Here are some of my own takes on the new look. I challenged myself to try and stay as close to the canon design's over-all (haha) vibe as I could, so they don't differ too drastically. Just a few alternative ways to do basically the same concept. For funsies.

***Zero disrespect intended towards Andy, for the record. He's giving us the content we've all been craving and he's the realest one for that! (Also, the overalls aren't that bad, tbh? I think it's just the all-black inking that makes them look kinda off in the preview image.) Still super excited for the full comic to finally be released AAAAAAAA!!

You are your usual Sky kid, with the new Season of AURORA out, (Where through the grapevine, heard that you get to literally meet GOD.) you've been hard at work farming for candles.

Especially Eden candles for height spells! .. Yeah you used them up trying to get taller.

On your way to the current known location of a Red Shard Event, which is in the Village of Dreams, you encounter a Moth, well, not really. They seem to understand the world enough and are apparently still getting used to seasons.

As you both converse, you're waiting for the eruption with the Sky kid as you give them advice on how to purify it since as stated, they're still getting used to it.

Once the eruptions roll in, you notice 4 gold stars rolling in too. You would assume that it's more sky kids that either are born or being re-born but..

They crash land right near you. The eruption happening at the same time. In a panic you tell the Sky Kid to move the weird dressed sky kids to a safe zone while you purified the darkness.

...

Venti is the first to wake up, instantly waking the others.

The sight was beautiful, but the situation wasn't. There were some sky kids sheltered in the stage with them, a blue person (one of the Performance Spirits) seemed to be healing a few.

A majority of them had one similar trait, simply done hair and a brown cape with 1 star at the back. Asking the spirit what's going on prompts the response of:

"Some advanced Sky kids brought a bunch of moths here to prepare for the purification of the eruption"

Excuse them as they remain confused the wHAT?!

After a good hour of finding the way out and to the village of Dreams it's.. a bit chaotic.

"CALL OVER HERE IM TRYING OT BURN S*HONK*T"

Little Nightmares III, huh???

I was trying to avoid being excited about it because no solid release date and 2024 could be a few months from now or a year from now and Idk how long I can handle being so fuckin hyped for this game YEEHAW

BUT I CAN'T, I KEEP THINKING ABT THE GAME AAHAHHGAGA

so here are my thoughts, if you wanted to know

FIRST OF ALL, i am so glad that after we saw LTNM II we thought it'd be co-op but it was just an AI, that we finally get co-op! AND ONLINE TOO, i spent the first day worried it'd be shared screen same room situation since i wasn't trying to get my hopes up but then I realised I can just.. google it.. AND IT IS!!! ONLINE!! IDK WHO I AM GONNA PLAY IT W FIRST AAAAAAAA

anyways, you can definitely tell it's a new studio working on this game, the world feels mostly the same but the character designs themselves are definitely stylistically similar, but not the same. With Six especially, the MC designs were very simplistic and realistic but used colour (or for Mono, a single design quirk being the bag) to stand out against their backgrounds and against the enemies which are largely neutral colours. But these new ones feel... "over designed"? On their own they definitely aren't, but in comparison to Mono, Six, Seven, and even NPCs like the flashlight girl, they have a lot more going on (especially the little wrench kid, Idk which one is Alone and which one is Low yet btw OOP)

Despite it being a new studio and you can tell, new puzzles and environments, they're still doing their best to have the OGs vibes and whatnot to feel familiar, namely in the trailer they bring back the fuses, and the additional gameplay video there's a short scene with an environment with all the shelves you can find in LTNM 1s gnome section (the one with the cart that is affected by the Maws swaying).

But regardless, it still feels different enough my brain is still nervous about it. I also feel In A Way about Tarsier having LTNM II explode and their franchise getting the attention it deserves, only to have it stuck with Bandai and now it's going to likely explode again and they aren't involved. Idk how anyone on that team feels about it, but if it were me omg.

Also the only boss we've seen so far (i hope they add more and i def want some to be a surprise so im not gonna assume this is the only one for now) feels... out of place? it has the design qualities of a LTNM boss, but the size of it makes it more of a spectacle than a warped/corruption of an adult. All the previous bosses fit in their environment, we are the small ones and they are scaled to the world around them. This is the first time, outside monster Six who imo is a bit of an outlier anyways due to her circumstances, we're getting a boss who is this huge and doesn't even fit their own environment. I hope we get a lore reason for this in some way, because currently the boss doesn't have the same vibe as the others and it's throwing me off a bit. Don't get me wrong, it'll be terrifying, but looking at the picture as a whole they are sort of out of place for me rn. I don't hate the bitch either, I'm not gonna be like omg get rid of it or change it, but it does strike me as odd seeing it for now.

And yes the tall man is too tall for a lot of things, but he's not THAT big. He's more like yer tall guy who hits his head off doorways, which happens irl anyways LMAO

Little Nightmares primarily tries to capture the feeling of being a small child and how everything is big and scary, but a doll that huge is out of the realm of reality set up for us already. It's gone from scary corrupted animal to godzilla, if that makes sense.

PAYING RENT SOOOOO

I was just busy thinking about this for a bit! I'm just going to get right into it,

So, the basic idea I have so far is that the layout and level will be based on a cabin. The cabin is inhabitated by a two headed dog thing, called the hound. The hound patrols around the cabin, kind of similar to an El Odio type of deal, only he's slower. Just don't get caught- also Raz gets shrinked down to the size of a penny (okay exaggeration, but still he's tiny)

HOWEVER she does fall asleep after a certain amount of tasks are completed. She'll curl up on big a pile of emotional baggage, and you can sneak by and enter new areas, get some T.J lore drops, and then the final level which is the outdoors. A lot of it is kind of a stealth level, because even though they tend to be widely hated, I actually really like stealth missions in games!

Anyways, the outdoor area is where the final boss occurs! The Hound wakes up and has been hunting Raz the whole time he's been in the outdoor level, and before he can enter the cabin, she blocks the entrance and the fight begins!

After she's almost defeated, she manages to pin Raz down with her massive paw, monologs on how she's her full size, and there's no way she can ever go back, how she's the lead emotions and she's in charge of all feeling. Then, a new entity called the Hunter pushes Hound off of Raz, and lifts up her Axe, slicing them down the middle. The hound, is now split up into to little puppies. Hunter grabs them by the scruffs of their necks and sighs, shaking her head. The aggressive one is barking and nipping, while the sad on cries and howls.

Hunter is basically T.J in lumberjack attire LMAO. Anyways, Raz is his normal size again, and the two of them are back in the cabin. The puppies are both sleeping soundly by Hunters feet. Raz asks what she plans to do with them, to which she says: "I'll probably try my best to take better care of them, I suppose. I can't just get rid of em, y'know? They're still part of me, always have been. I'll just have to start over, that's all... That way I can control them better to avoid another mess like this."

SO the metaphor I'm trying to use here is, y'know how if people neglect and don't take care of their dogs, they get aggressive and harder to control? Well, that can be similar to emotions, so yeah :)

Its pretty basic, BUT it's similar to what I've got going on so mmmmyeah

As for her clairvoyance of Raz, I'm still thinking about it. I think she'll probably see herself as a kid, since they were both similar when she was that age.

As for the "plot" and other things... (this got so long I am so sorryy;;;)

Well at first I wanted to do kinda a normal ebg, no plot or anything bc I don't think I have the smarts to do an elaborate game/story lmao and I kinda wanted to have more established s/i lore?? And then I realized hey I can use the ebg to introduce my s/i!!!

See I'd been working SO hard on her names lately, researching and studying in-game adepti lore and stuff and I though why don't I make it a simple game where the goal is to guess her name (with me giving hints ofc) and at the very start I had the idea of her losing her memories so she could re-discover/remember things about herself alongside the "players" learning them. Whoever character I got as my bias would help her and get to know her too along the way, even npcs (or in the rare case of me getting Dottore/Pantalone, probs be the villain for her memory loss lmao)

And then I got Kazuha. And it was so SO perfect. I took inspiration from Spirited Away with the plot point of having your name/memories/identity stolen and for some reason I remembered the whole Ino-shika-cho koi-koi card combo from Summer Wars I just had this vivid mental image of a scene where Kazuha dropped the biggest hint by writing the Kanji for Butterfly (Chō) which doubles ofc as the Hanzi for Butterfly/Crystalfly (Dié) written the same pronounced (and romanized) differently :3c

I did not end up making haiku bc they are complicated but I at least tried to loosely keep/emulate the 3 phrases, phonetic rhyme and sensory elements while referencing my lil plot lmao

And all this started because I was stressing over the fact that "Crys" is not an appropriate name for a Liyue character lmao, I debated for so long giving her a chinese name, but I didn't want to further make her an OC I wanted her to represent me/my blog (also part of me was and still is immensely worried I somehow insult cn ppl by being as some sort of weeabo equivalent or that I am "appropriating culture" or idk I may be dumb but I try to do my research and I prommy it does not come from a place of malice or anything I genuinely love genshin and Li and it's got me interested in a culture/country I funnily enough have somehow interacted with and have friends in but never really paid that much attention to ig...) and then I just had the epiphany What if I just reverse engineer and name her Crystalfly in cn? Lore would be that either her name got accidentally translated in documents a long long time ago and ppl started calling ehr Crystalfly/Crys and she rolled with it or she simply adopted the translation/nickname as her name for international settings, keeping her true name more private (hidden in plain sight tbh) p sure the only ones who know are the elder adepti (Ganyu/Xiao included) and Neuvillette (once he told her his real/first name) (ironically Crys may be harder to pronounce i other languages lmaoooo rip Fontaine)

for starters, i was literally screaming in a VC with one of my other friends because of arturo's secret reveal. i really want to know the story behind his younger sister commiting suicide because of him, because i refuse to believe that it was out of malice. though, he did have quite the extreme reaction, because hell, he had a scalpel at eden's throat when she mentioned the secret to him, so it must have pissed him right off that they're already assuming that his motives or reasons were malicious. terrifying stuff. either way, he's starting to grow on me.

also, new arturo sprites and a cg with him! yippee! love how they look so far :)

AREI AND EDEN'S INTERACTION! they were being quite fruity but i genuinely loved it. seeing that side of arei actually opening up to eden... it was a sight to see. might i start shipping them? who the hell knows. either way, it was wholesome as fuck.

also the fact that david decided to go all Komaeda on us is probably one of the scariest things to me, bro is probably going to take it back when he realizes who the killer is. or not. bro wants the killer to die a painful fucking death.

Max and Cal art?!?! In 2024?!?!?!

Im not gonna lie, Peeps. I forgot these two existed for a bit. BUT NOW THE BRAINROT IS TAKING HOLD AAAAAAAA

Deranged ramblings below!!

So Cal (pigman) and Max (demon) are two of my earliest characters EVER. Like, when I was still drawing with notebook paper and crayons after middle school.

They were also two of my absolute favorites ever. (So much so that they made an appearance on my wattpad back in 2015!)

This plotline is a bit outdated, though! And their designs and personalities have changed a lot since then!

Nowadays, Max is a demon with weak magical abilities. However, by human standards, his magic is incredible! So as a teenager he disguised himself as a human and lived among them as a promising mage.

Cal is a pigman. He wasn’t always one though. At one point, he was just a kid from modern times who ended up getting transported to this magical medieval world with witches and demons and all sorts of things! But he wanted to go home, and caused a lot of trouble trying to do so. He meets Max one day (in his human disguise) and begs him for help getting back home

Max agrees, and he sets off with Cal. Theh travel the land until they're 18 in search of a way for Cal to get back home.

On one of their journeys, Max is contacted by the ruler of a nearby kingdom. He's been summoned to be the royal mage for a large sum of money.

But Cal wouldn't be allowed to go with him.

Cal tells him to take the job, and that he would be fine on his own. Max does, and the two separate for years.

At some point, Cal got into a situation he couldn't talk his way out of.

He had angered a witch. A very powerful one. One that cast a spell on him to turn him into the hulking pigman he is today.

But the transformation was slow. So slow, in fact, that for weeks afterwords he thought he escaped the witch unscathed.

But then his teeth turned into tusks, his ears moved up his head, a taik grew out of his spine.

It hurt. And it didn't get easier once the transformation was over. He was a stranger in his own skin. The townspeople branded him a monster. He was chased out and into the woods.

He had to relearn how to exist in his own body. He hid out in the woods. Wandering from town-to-town in search of food.

Eventually, he decided to build his own place. Deep in the forest, he constructed a wood cabin. He learned how to farm his own crops. He spent a year living alone.

Max, on the other hand.

He had been the king's top mage for 5 years. But he was overworked, and the promise of gold was no longer worth it. His illusion spell he used to appear human took too much of his energy. His disguise was starting to slip- and he knew if the king knew he was a demon, he would be killed. But burnout waits for no one, and one day he isn't able to perform his disguise spell anymore.

He escapes the castle with all the gold he can carry before he is discovered. He ran deep into the woods. His only cover was a cloak he had kept in the back of his wardrobe for years.

The woods were unforgiving, nights cold and danger around every corner.

One day, he heard the distinct sound of a tree being chopped down. He froze. People weren't supposed to be out here.

He hid in a bush and watched a large, shadowy figure carry the tree deeper into the forest.

He followed and was surprised to see a single cabin.

The figure stepped into the sunlight. He was a pigman- and yet- Max felt something familiar when he saw him. Something that reminded him of the friend he left so long ago.

Eventually, Max finds the courage to confront him, and they're both overjoyed to meet again. Cal lets Max stay in the cottage, and once he recovers from his magical burnout, he uses his human for to buy things at the local market for both of them

It looks like their lives are finally peaceful.. until one day another misfit found his way to the cabin in the woods...

But that's lore for later!

the things I like about this chapter was how well written smoke cheese was on this chapter, how he was just not good at expressing his emotions and personal opinion and only use it to say some mean things but it was very heartwarming that he is starting to warm up to us and how he wanted us to stay and when he said "they better come back or else" and how he basically is a bit of worried that we might replace the kingdom was ahhhhhhhh (⁠ ⁠ꈍ⁠ᴗ⁠ꈍ⁠)!!! Or is it just me? Basically I just see smoked cheese as a person who is not good with words but show it through harsh yk expressions? Yeah I hc with that!..

I Loooove how Reader was expressing they're thoughts without shying anymore, I love the part we're her Radiance said to ignore what others think and say they're hearts desires!!!! I can't help but cry on how much far reader have gone. I feel so Prrooouudd, I keep banging my table on so much wholesomeness being put in this chapter!! It took me two whole Day not to tweak throught the entire chapter due to how excited I was been! thank you so much lauri!

I love the friendship that was visiblely show on this chapter! I like Burnt cheese telling our resilient and how mozzarella cares about us in her own way!! And Smoke cheese too! Thank you for writing him so good! I haven't seen anyone write smoke cheese so correctly before! thank you!! I just wanna cry!! I will miss them when chapter 11 end! you're work make me cry in happiness!

I love how her Radiance keep getting surprise when she thought that's all Reader could offer but reader prove them wrong!... I like the end too! How we express so much emotions and how we could bring back a precious gift to her! I love her so much ahh, I wanna 😭 aAh- so wholesome but show a lot about what the Reader have become! and they way Her Radiance said

"Well, well! That's quite the claim! Simply carrying out my orders isn't enough for you, I see?" she giggled, sounding very pleased already, "Ah, you greedy thing, you really have become mine~!"

I- I was tweaking at the part, my mouth agape and my face blushing red! I can't calm down, I just want to thank you again and again! This chapter was so wholesome and how relationship grown this past chapter!///^-^///

I was so happy her Radiance cared so much for us... I can't just stop thanking because of how good this is! How she blessed us, give us a stone that might be later be important.. And basically I will be happy of what ending you will be going with...

I also love how close reader and they're friends are! Saying like,

shows how close they are, I'm basically dying of cuteness!!

TBH, I....I tend to worry like that every time I upload something, heheh.....I-I'm so glad to have the audience I have, and that I haven't gotten any flack for anything I've written yet, and....e-even tho I know I'm not the BEST writer out there, I still intend to keep things this way as long as I can.....I-I don't think I need a FULL WEEK off, but a few days, definitely. Y-yeah, there was a lotta Smoked Cheese in this chapter....and I actually had fun writing him this time, now that I've gotten into his head and understand him better. He was pretty hard to write when I first started, cuz I, well, didn't like him very much, but through writing him, he's grown on me....just like Reader's starting to grow on him, hehe...! I still wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of him in canon, but developing him here and adding some more nuance to him made his character work better for me. How he cares about the kingdom in his own way, which just so happens to clash with Golden Cheese's, how he's kinda her straight man who doesn't get a lotta respect, he's got a bit of an ego of his own and doesn't like being proven wrong, and...yeah, he's not a bad person, he loves his home and at this time he's still loyal to his queen, he gets along with Cheesenbird and now Mozzarella (their friendship is fun, pfff), he's just very harsh and intense at times, and struggles with empathizing with others. I didn't wanna make him a hate sink, is what I'm getting at. I wanted to flesh him out XD

His relationship with Reader is....difficult, so writing them start accepting each other bit by bit was difficult to write too....I kept asking myself "Is this believable enough? It's not too fast, is it? Is it too much at once?" so I'm glad it's going over well so far...

O-overall this chapter had a lotta things I struggled with making good enough....It wasn't just straightforward fluff, it had conflicts I REALLY needed to write well, which was why I worried this time >.<;

But I AM proud of myself for making Reader transition pretty well into being much more lively and outspoken. They really have come a long way, and this was kinda the culmination of their emotional arc. They're still shy, but they've grown a lot, so...yay....!

It's the familiar squeaking of all too heavy felt covered feet that catches his attention. Keef quickly shoves the curtain side to find his little potentially violent buddy.

"Gir!" He waves excitedly shoving the window open to lean out of it. "Hey Gir! It's been awhile, you wanna come in?"

The robot stops to waving back.

An angry groan from the couch startles the boy. He turns sheepishly, an apology on his tongue.

"Oof-" the pillow drops from his face to the floor. It sits there.

Squeaks.

The smile returns, "Sor-"

"CAN YOU JUST-" fingers lace through messy hair. Nails drag. "Just go play outside, okay?"

"See you-" the doors slams. "I LOVE YOU!" He takes the mumbling as an 'I love you too.'

He hopes, it's an 'I love you too.'

"Yous is crying."

Keef jumps.

"Gir!" Then he finally hears what he said, "No, I'm- They're just happy tears. Am I crying?" He touches his cheek.

A long loud slurp.

His eyes stung, but he didn't feel any wetness on his cheeks

"Here ya go!" Gir pulls out a cookie from God knows where

"Oh, thanks! Are you getting better at cooking? This looks great!"

The robot giggles, "Yea! Try it!"

The cookie snaps unevenly, crumbling in places to reveal... a feather? "This- really looks yummy Gir. Sharing's caring," he takes the bigger chunk with most of the feather and shoves it at the robot's face.

For a moment Gir continues slurping, then suddenly as a bear trap his mouth snaps down on the cookie. Keef all too used to this snatches his fingers back just in the nick of time.

"What's that?" GIR looks where he's pointing. Keef crushes the cookie in his hand and throws the crumbs in the bushes.

GIR looks hard, "It's a- a aaaaaaaa hmmmm aaaaaaaAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!" He screams at the top of lungs ending in a fit of giggling. Keef starts giggling too.

Harsh banging comes from the door behind him, "QUIET DOWN!"

"SORRY!" He walks down the steps quickly grabbing Gir's sticky hand. The robot gives the door a parting glance. "I don't know how you do it Gir! I haven't ever had anything that good in my entire life."

"Aw really?"

"Really Gir."

"Really really?

The robot giggles. "I like you."

ANOTHER VIBE-BASED SONGGG i also love this one mickey … it’s so beautiful and soothing :((( i imagine it playing during the scene where suguru shares a bit of his past with reader . sitting by the windowsill in their room as the moon glows….. and then he carries them to bed and tucks them in :) i can picture him humming them to sleep with this song.

honestly !! i associate a lot of my character/reader pairings with seasons …. especially this one though. i’m also always thinking about your little knight and prince and how he’s the summer to their spring :3 in my case i think suguru is probably reader’s autumn!! a bridge that softens the gap between summer and winter…. he gives them stability and comfort. and they give him both summer and winter. he meets them right in the middle <33

and suguru does!!! they both accept each other as they are . a fox and a wolf. suguru will let reader bite and hiss and claw at him as much as they need. he won’t love them any less . and reader sees suguru covered in blood, manic and frenzied, and still only thinks about how beautiful he is . how nice their name sounds when it’s falling from his lips . they don’t love each other despite their flaws or because of their flaws . they just like each other. scratch marks and all . i’m normal abt them btw

THIS ONE 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 MICKEYYYY HOLD MY HAND. this one is almost TOO perfect . i love the crane wives and so many of their songs would fit super well into this fic …. but this one is just . insane . the album cover even has a little fox 🥺 BUT AAA JUST . the instrumental and the LYRICS … i’m gonna need to really pick them apart because they’re so unbelievably perfect for royalty!reader i’m going to. scream.

OK SOOO . crows . are a bit of a motif in the fic. crows remind me a lot of suguru maybe that’s why. then there’s also the garden, which is mentioned a lot in the fic too!! all the flower imagery…

but . here’s the thing. royalty!reader is a Liar. they lie. they wear a mask. they’re not honest with their own self and not with anyone else either. and they assume everyone is looking down on them. i can picture them looking out into the garden, seeing those free crows, and imagining their cawing as mocking laughter . it drowns out the sound of their own lies . (crumbles to the floor)

and then the final line ….. ”holding on to a love they keep wanting”…….. yeahhh . suguru and reader are both afraid to bare their hearts to one another but they keep holding onto that love anyway.

🥺🥺🥺 this line is so…. pretty. and hopeful. it makes me think more of knight!sugu than reader because i think he’s done many things he can’t forgive himself for . but the forgiveness he yearns for is just within reach . all he needs is a push. and i think reader more than anyone wants the better things in life — for themselves and for their knight.

then there’s the bird line ….. as much as he pushes and pushes for that connection, he’s just as scared as reader is when it comes to intimacy!! his hands turn into birds and fly away from them . he’s afraid of crossing a line or boundary. i tried to show it in the fic but like …. he’s very particular about certain things . he’s willing to bend certain rules (esp later when his devotion starts sticking more to his lord than his knighthood) but he’s Very firm about other things . like not calling them by name at first . it’s a little… too much for him. knights really have to tiptoe that line.

…. there’s this one arthurian work that i love. that you’ve definitely heard about bc it’s so popular + they made a movie out of it and i don’t think it was a good adaptation but it was soooooo so good as a movie . gawain and the green knight….. I DON’T WANNA RAMBLE TOO MUCH BUT UM. i love the arthuriana :333 and i’m mentioning this story because gawain is tested on his value as a knight right. there’s a whole thing about how he kisses a man’s wife because it’d be impolite to deny the lady’s wishes (rejecting her would go against his honour as a knight), but he can’t sleep with her because that would go against … his honour as a knight. it’s a whole. purity thing. you need to be chivalrous but also chaste. so knight!sugu acts all charming and flirty but when reader wants him to cross the line between them he’s like 😳 yeah. he’s . a silly little guy .

“I have a question.” Meri says, swirling the whiskey they’d poured from Broden Voss’s crystal decanter. They wouldn’t drink it, Broden knows- they hated the taste. Couldn’t stand to kiss him after he’d had a sip. It was more for something to hold, he presumes.

“What now?” He’s sitting at his desk in his chair- authentic leather, the best money could buy. He’d given up on any work, shelving his email response to Stella for a time where Meri wasn’t bothering him. He used to find these meetings amusing... The novelty had worn off. His voice is clipped, annoyed, but Meri either doesn’t notice or foolishly still believes they’re safe.

“Do you know… who I am?” Meri stops swirling the drink, resting it in their lap. They’re perched on the edge of his desk and they’re tense and uncomfortable. They are staring at the wall, expression steely, waiting.

Broden leans back, threading his fingers together and scrutinizing them. He sighs, reaches towards his desk and opens the drawer- Meri doesn’t flinch, but turns to watch him like a hawk- and pulls out a slim box. He pops the golden clasp to reveal… a plain box of cigars. (plain isn’t the right word. They were imported, expensive, exclusive.) Meri deflates, staring down at the cup. They're upset, but not at Broden. He lights one up and savors the taste, “No.” He answers finally, “I don’t.”

Meri jerks in surprise, spinning to face him, “Are you being serious?”

“I never saw the need.” His words are characterized by a smoke trail from his lips.

Too relieved to pick up on the thinly veiled insult, Meri visibly relaxes, “Whew!” They fiddle with the cup again, frowning, “Y’know, Cyrus does. He looked me up.”

Broden goes very, very still. “Is that so?”

“Yeah! He vetted me, the jerk.” Meri scowls, “He said he couldn’t let me get too close without making sure I wasn’t dangerous. Isn’t that messed up? Just when I thought maybe...”

Meri had always overshared when it came to Cyrus Borg- they’d learned it riled Voss up, and a pissy Voss was funny. They hadn’t considered how Voss might act once he was finished playing their game. They keep talking- too long, too clueless of the way the chessboard changed.

He interrupts them during another tangent about Borg that Broden didn’t care to listen to, “I could, if i wanted to.” He says softly, traces of venom in his tone.

“Could what?”

“I could find out who you are, where you work when you’re not stealing from me- even where you live.” He leans forward, reaching over to wrap his hands around the cup. Meri face is a menagerie of emotions. “I never did because I have never seen you as a threat. You’re in my building, Meri. If i wished you dead, you would be.”

There’s a look in Meris eyes- the refusal to believe. A rat caught in the trap that can’t allow itself to comprehend that.

He takes the cup- no use wasting good whisky. “Meri, Meri, Meri…” He sighs, sitting back, “I’m bored.”

There- there it is. Voss doesn’t call the security drones in right away- he was waiting for this. Meris face crumples, dawning horror- the realization, the shock, the fear, the awe- all of it for him. Because of him. Finally Meri realized their place in the hierarchy. They knew exactly what they meant to him- what their very life represents in his-

Absolutely nothing.

Their eyes are wet, and it's the closest to tears Broden knows he’ll get. He doesn’t waste another breath, bringing the cup to his lips as Meri scrambles off his desk, backing away in fear. Their hands shake, and their eyes look wildly around the room- waiting.

He taps a button on his wristwatch, and activates the security drones.
