I have seen The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I am a changed person. Here are some thoughts. (Gonna try not to be too spoilery but there might be some.)

First... Tom Blyth, you LEGEND. He was perfect as young Snow. In fact, out of all of the cast members in this franchise (new and old), I think he is the actor who embodied the book character the best. His performance felt straight from the page, with even more nuance. INCREDIBLE.

Rachel is a STAR. She captured Lucy Gray's complexity, which I was always worried about because Lucy Gray has more depth than people give her credit for. Some people will just say she is a nice, noble character. (Lol, the snake in the dress?!) Some say she is totally manipulative. The truth is somewhere in-between and I got that from Rachel's performance. Also the songs, GOOD LORD. They sounded way better than what I imagined. And Rachel's raw emotion while singing them... geesh. Her "KISS MY ASS" has haunted my brain.

Josh as Sejanus broke my heart, as expected. THAT'S MY BOY RIGHT THERE. I do wish that we got to see more scenes with his parents, especially his Ma. I needed that impact not just for *that* scene, but for when Snow basically leeches off of them and uses their wealth to gain power. MORE MA

I think I have my initial book thoughts typed up on here, but my book ranking has always been Part 3 > Part 1 > Part 2. I think the movie's version of the Games was a lot better. I felt like I understood the tributes better. REAPER BROKE ME.

I went into the movie knowing that people thought Part 3 was rushed, but honestly, I do not think it was more rushed than any other part of the movie. The whole movie somehow felt rushed, which has positive and negative points. I appreciate that they included all of the important moments from the book, but it did feel like we were quickly moving from one event to the next without room to breathe. (Like going from Clemensia's snake bite straight to the arena bombing.) I cannot fault the movie too much, since they had a lot to include, but that was an issue I had with the whole movie, not just Part 3.

Mostly I just think this was one of the closest book-to-movie adaptations that I have ever seen. (It helps that I just finished rereading the book.) The world-building and overall vibe was spot-on. Again, my favorite part about the movie was the cast. Us fans are so lucky to continue to have a wonderfully talented cast who blow us away with their performances. I am in awe of them.

I do not think I can pick a favorite scene yet, but The Old Therebefore was stunning.

It’s possibly the most ridiculous plan he’s ever come up with. It’s definitely the fucking craziest, especially considering the fact that he’s very definitely dead if it doesn’t work. But he needs to buy time for the officers to find a way to get in here and take Bobby down, and he’s so desperate to get out of this alive and see Leon and Connor again that he’ll try just literally anything, even as Bobby stares at him unreadably and his hands shake against the restraints on his wrists.

Besides, he tries to tell himself against all common sense. If Lucy Grey could sing her way to survival, there’s no reason why he can’t do the same.

EJSHJSS this is like a newer medieval torture method - a way to make me confess something I DON’T KNOW. All tracks are ANGELIC to me, but I will eventually go ahead and state that Pure As The Driven Snow is my favorite. The mandolin’s plucking melody along with the guitar’s rhythm is PERFECT. And Rachel’s vocals are just CHEF KISS. UGH.

I would say that a very close runner-upper is The Old Therebefore, ESPECIALLY when sung in the arena. The acapella version is great, but it lacks that insurmountable feel that has me GNAWING to my cuticles.

Things changed since Sunset Curve fell apart literally as three out of four members died before a gig. Leaving a sad girl behind Luke by chance runs into the reader with someone else. Death tore the couple apart, and time can’t fix this.

The niece of the infamous Kenny Ortega had its advantages and disadvantages, you received insight on his projects but felt guilty saying no. Kenny seeing the exhaustion pulling you down invites to the set of Julie and the Phantoms where you rediscover your love with the field.

Lessons of the Tower of Babel

Peering again into the text of Genesis, I couldn’t help but notice that the story of the tower of Babel protrudes between the family tree of Noah, and the chronicles of Abraham, like a sore thumb. It appears to account the occurrences surrounding the creation of languages, but if its purpose only served to explain the above, then it seemed to provide superfluous information. Many times in the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, the author didn’t need to devote more than 1 or 2 verses to make its point. For example, the prayer of Jabez was depicted succinctly in 2 verses, and if one judged merely from the amount of verses alone, one might naively mistake this description as an insignificant blip in the whole Bible.

To try to dissect the meaning of this narration, I thought that the story of the tower of Babel had something to do with the constant pouring of effort to make a name for oneself, in other words, to earn the respect of people. To earn other people’s respect or approval is essentially to validate one’s existence on earth. Afterall, living a meaningless life is equivalent to not living. The whole physiology of the human body works, at least in part, as a consequence of the individual’s perception that life still has meaning and purpose. A person who perceives that life is void of meaning would seek death, or at least give it some contemplation, even if the body continues to function.

A video lecture from psychology professor Dr J Peterson also complemented this point of view. He said that since the purpose of the tower of Babel was to reach into the heavens, or Heaven, it symbolises not only the desire to get into Heaven, and to be known, but also to do so by works.

The desire to embark in a project so ambitious as to get into heaven is explained in this account by the people’s desire to make a name of themselves. Equating both ideas, I deduce that by making a name of oneself, one becomes at least nearer to a heavenly state of mind. If I made my name for myself, in other words, if I were famous, as famous as say the Queen of England, my fame would naturally open many doors that would therebefore been inaccessible to me; doors to resources, and to attain almost anything I had wanted. It’s not just about a heavenly state of mind, it’s almost like having near-divine powers at one’s grasp.

We see people work hard for the single-minded purpose of being rich. Affluence is almost equivalent to having power. But the desire for this sense of power, the way I see it, is in fact a desire to be loved. But as the apostle Paul says, we are saved by faith and not by works. Which makes the story of the Tower of Babel even more apt, seeing how it is juxtaposed just before the story of Abraham, the man of faith. Because of his faith, Abraham became the father of many nations, which I conclude as being famous throughout the world and throughout the ages. In addition, he also enjoyed a life of material prosperity.

If we sought to reach into the heavens by works instead of faith, we may discard morals and ethics in the process, thus leading to an eventuality that the very projects we undertake will collapse. In the process, as our tower becomes higher and higher, we become prideful, and become desensitized to the dangers while in hot pursuit of constructing a higher tower. Indeed, it can be so harmful to the individual and the community to “get into heaven” by works alone.

God yearns for us to get into heaven, but it can only be ascended through the narrow staircase of faith. The higher we climb, there’s always a temptation to look condescendingly at the people below us. Yet in the narrow staircase, there will be walls to prevent us from tripping into the abyss. There’s always a cost to make this difficult climb, but there’s a even higher cost if we attempted to make the ascent through other means.
