Inspired by a joke made about Haymitch Parent-Trap-ping Everlark during the CF training-like-careers period (can’t find the post but I think it was @thesweetnessofspring)

“How am I supposed to focus when you’re standing over my shoulder like that?!” the girl snaps.

Haymitch’s head is pounding. Between the workouts, the lack of sleep, and withdrawal it’s always pounding. This constant bickering isn’t helping either.

“Yeah, and if you can’t do this with me here, how will you manage with the whole country staring over your shoulder in the arena?” The boy snarks back.

Haymitch guffaws and the girl glares at him before directing her ire back towards the boy, teeth gritted in a snarl, “This is stupid! I know how to make a fire. I’m done here.”

“Katniss,” the kid warns, “we have another half hour till lunch.”

She huffs, “I’ll go run laps then.” The boy opens his mouth, but she cuts him off, “alone!” She turns on her heels and Haymitch watches as he reaches out as if to stop her, before changing his mind and dropping his hand as she storms off.

Pathetic.

The mentor clicks his tongue when she’s out of earshot, “you need to take care of that.”

The boy shrugs and begins packing up supplies, “it’s fine, laps are good too. I know she can start a fire.”

“Then maybe you should practice containing one.” He didn’t think it could be worse than before the Victory tour when they were both mopey and sullen. “When has being at odds like this ever worked in either of your favors?”

“Yeah, well, I’m trying to make sure we’re all prepared for what’s coming,” he says and Haymitch knows he means more than just the training regiment he’s got them on. “I don’t know what she wants from me,” Peeta adds in a grumble.

“I think you do. You two smoothed things over pretty well on the Tour.” The boy shoots him a weary look. “Things were peaceful enough here up until the Quell announcement.”

“The Quell changed everything.”

“It did, and she’s still reeling. She’s looking for comfort.”

“Then you do it! If not you, there are plenty of others. She doesn’t need me for that, and soon enough I won’t be around, so she might as well get used to it now.

Haymitch winces at the directness of the statement.

The boy points a finger, “You and I made a deal; we save her. She can’t afford distractions.” He stands poised, waiting for an acknowledgment. The boy accepts his inclined chin as agreement and continues, “Now, I’m going to go make sure she’s keeping pace.”

He watches the boy stalk away. The girl can’t act for shit; if they head to the Quell in this state they’re as good as dead and the rebellion with them. Haymitch curses under his breath. He’s going to need to get involved…

“I’m Charles,” he said and stuck his hand out. He tried not to be offended when all he received was an odd look for his efforts. “Crystal told me to lock up.” He didn’t feel like explaining his whole arrangement with this stranger, but he figured that would get his point across well enough.

The downed skater balled his hands into fists, a surprisingly angry look coming across his face. “You can tell her it’s fine. I will lock up,” he said. He made an attempt to stand, but didn’t get very far before his body tensed and he sat rather heavily back down on the ice. 

His green eyes closed, and he titled his head back, nostrils flaring as he let out slow, pained breaths.

Charles didn’t think he could even get up off the ice without his help, much less lock up. Did he even have keys? Crystal hadn’t mentioned that fact. If she had, he might have been tempted to leave him to his own devices hours ago. 

Now, staring at the clearly injured skater on the ice, he was glad he hadn’t.

“No can do, mate,” Charles said. “Crystal trusted me with this, and you,” he stuck his hand out for him to take, “look like you need help.”

What common/uncommon fear do they have? Being in adequate and abandoned. She has totally healthy coping mechanisms for this in inform of working herself to death and pushing people away so she can't be abandoned. Girlfailureboss Also death. To be more precise what happens after death.

Do they have any pet peeves? Self pitying people. Things happen to everyone. Tough shit. Move on. No one is going to save you but yourself. Don't let your past define you. Also people entering her space without knocking. Knock or she'll make you go back and redo it correctly.

What are 3 items you can find in their bedroom? A tie thrown carelessly on the bed/floor, a burner phone and a rosary.

What do they notice first in a person? Their stance/how they carry themselves. It tells Callista a lot about a person the way they stand. The way they dress, speak or even smell can all be faked. But how they carry themselves is a reflection of not only who they are but how they view themselves.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how high is their pain tolerance? Hmm, hard to say. She can probably handle physical pain better than emotional one. It hurts more for her. Physical maybe 7,5? Emotional 4

Do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure? (or freeze and fawn) In most cases, Callista was born a flightless bird. Her pride and quick to rage will cause her to fight even if it might not be the smartest move. It takes a lot for her to actually flee.

What animal represents them best? A black panther. It's solitary. Easily blends with the shadows. Incredibly strong bite and extremely clever. Also the reflective eyes in the dark.

How would a stranger likely describe them? A total bitch. Ruthless. A heartless capitalist. Or mother/mommy if you are into that sort of thing. Looking at you Josh Kentucky.

Do they have any hobbies? Callista loves trashy dating shows and telenovelas. The messier the better. After a long night of work, there's nothing better than to lounge in her couch, putting on Love Island or something alike, and just watch dumb, meaningless shit unfold. Also, I don't know if it counts as a hobby, but she loves coffee. She loves buying it, testing different brands, picking up the the different notes in it's smell. Death didn't stop that hobby, she just makes her ghoul partake so she can enjoy it through her lol

here's the beginning of a chase scene from part two of the false contract!

Her eyes drifted up to the window of Santuono’s state room and widened when they landed on the two men silhouetted inside. She ducked behind a chimney and cursed under her breath, rolling her eyes in frustration as she pulled her mask up over her nose. The sound of disturbed gravel on a distant rooftop sent her heart shooting into her throat, and she pushed herself off the chimney and into a hard sprint. She knew that sound well, having heard it when she jumped out of Santuono’s room and onto that very roof. Her earlier foes would not be so unprepared for a second fight.

As she launched herself onto the next roof, she cringed at the sound of dozens of wings flapping desperately as a flock of pigeons scattered into the air above her. The Dellamortes would not be far behind now. She dashed from rooftop to rooftop, clutching her cape close to keep herself streamlined. The speed and the repeated impacts of jump after jump were punishing, but these buildings were her training grounds her whole life. She crossed the block in moments.

On a wide, flat roof, she chanced a look behind her. The taller of the two was hot on her trail two buildings away, his long stride quickly closing the distance. In an attempt to lose him, she split to the left, leaping onto a balcony that neighbored another, taller building she then clambered onto. She pushed herself to keep up the pace, though her lungs burned and her thighs ached. If she slowed, she was dead. 

She’d run farther before, but outside of training, she’d never outrun another Crow. She’d never outrun two other Crows.

Another look back. He was just one rooftop away, now.

why do you write fanfic?

my brain is a kinder space to live inside when i write, and fic is the quickest way to get words down on the page these days. also, thinking about the characters is not enough. i need to put them in enclosures and study them. i need to take notes. i need to read those notes obsessively. i need to scatter my toys all over the carpet and invite my friends to admire and compliment them and play.

which of your posted stories do you think of the most even though the story is "finished"?

if you could give yourself fic advice from when you first started writing fic, what would that advice be?

stop quoting bible verses. let the characters curse. don't freak out when a b7 shipper shows up in the comments section of your friendship fic, you're not going to get sent to hell for being interpreted as writing gay fanfiction. in fact, give it another ten years and you WILL be writing gay fanfiction. on purpose. with your whole chest. please put the jadzia and worf action figures down and back away slowly, you're just gay for dax, you do not really ship them.

what's your relationship to fic stats?

unfriended, blocked, reported. i have workskins installed so i can only see my total word count. on individual works i can see word count, chapter count, and whether the fic is in a collection or not but that is IT. my life has gotten immeasurably better since i did this

is there a pairing or scenario or friendship that you miss writing? if so, why? if not, why not?

raffi & rios. my god i miss raffi & rios. every day i yearn for the day i can take that box off the highest shelf of the closet and open it back up

what motivates you to write?

brainworms. literally the characters are in my head and i need to get them out. if they stay there too long shit starts getting rancid. i also really enjoy participating in gift exchanges because it gives me a deadline, structure, and a community that is focused on writing rather than a specific fandom. we are all cheering each other on in our various anonymous projects and it's so great!

why do you write for the fandom(s) you write for?

mostly it's because a character or characters have crawled inside my brain. sometimes they're there for a month or a season, other times i come back to them multiple times over a span of many years (star trek is the main example here). since entering the exchange scene i have occasionally picked up one-off fandoms if a pinch hit needed filling or if i needed to make myself matchable in order to participate. i've created some of my favorite fics that way and written far outside my comfort zone. it's great :)

if you're stuck writing a WIP, what do you do?

take a break. take a break take a break take a break. let the story breathe. let myself breathe. come at it from a different angle. read poetry. steal the poem's bones. use them as a scaffold. if all else fails tuck the work into the abandoned folder so i can't see it anymore but do not under any circumstance delete. it's not a failed story. it's just not the right time yet. no work is wasted work. it all breaks down into compost. every tributary feeds a lake.

what do you wish people knew about comments?

whenever i post a fic, there is an absolutely agonizing period of time between posting and first comments when i am very seriously considering deleting my entire internet presence and disappearing into the mountains. this is a me thing. i understand that. i've come up with various coping strategies through the years with mild success, but no matter how much i believe in the work or how much coaching i provide for my brain, there is always that voice in the back of my head that wonders what if it's actually bad. what if it's really really bad. what if they're pointing and laughing and making fun of me. comments shut that voice up. comments provide tangible, outside-of-my-brain proof that the words i wrote made a positive difference in someone else's day, and sometimes they make a difference in ways i never expected. you do not have to tell an author that you like their fics, but when you do, you are never ever bothering them. they're not thinking you're a weirdo or a creep. they're actually probably grinning in relief. they're backing away from the delete button. they're unpacking their suitcase. they're breathing more easily and re-opening the word doc and showing up at the sandbox of creativity to play another day.

maybe there's a question you wish had been on here. what's that question (and answer)? -> what are some fanworks that have inspired you or fed your own creativity?

Candy and Chlorine by scioscribe is so sharp and smart and sexy. 100% biggest inspiration for my jennifer's body fic An Unofficial Anthology of the Online Fandom for the Yellowjackets Tragedy by banerries is so CREATIVE and so FUNNY. it reminds me that at the end of the day fic is supposed to be about play i recommend this barbie/dracula fic to a different friend at least once a month. stunning character study, so unusual, i love love love crack treated seriously a little lower than the angels by mylittleredgirl got me to see the vision of b'elanna/kes for one lovely lovely sitting. i am forever grateful to rarepair writers. they encourage me to think deep, write hard, and trust the process of creativity @stardustcityhag's art is stunning. i am always on some level trying to channel the feeling of it when i'm writing @zannolin's fics consistently feed my desire for delicious-ambiguous-something-amphibious not-shipfic-but-not-not-shipfic. i've written some of my best and most favorite fics after reading their work. their national treasure polycule fic pops into my brain at least once a month. i adore it @73chn1c0l0rr3v3l's smut is some of my favorite smut in the whole world. so sensuous, so vivid, so lush and vivid and aching. i am always at all times meditating on this una/la'an bathhouse thunderstorm fic they wrote me. also, this una/nhan breathplay fic. and this satanic panic fic. and this la'an + insomnia one. i could go on

She flexes her fingers, before slipping her hands into the pocket of her apron to fiddle with the straws as she heads to the coffee maker. She’s not one for touching; She dreads the accidental brush of limbs as she hands off cups or clears plates. Nothing like Delly, who’s a self proclaimed ‘hugger’ or Johanna who she once watched braid a patron’s beard on request. But there’s something about Peeta that has her doing and saying things out of her comfort zone.

Returning with cup and carafe, she quickly scans the room and upon finding no immediate need, slides into the seat across from him.

“How’s your day been?”

‘Better now,’ she thinks, but instead she shrugs, “not terrible. The Turkey Trot had us busy this morning, but after that it slowed a bit, no worse than a usual day. How about you? We weren’t expecting the after dinner rush until at least 11. Shouldn't you be drinking too much and reminiscing about the good ol’ days or something?”

She’d only moved to town three years ago when her sister had started college at Panem U, but she’d quickly learned that half the town was related to a Mellark, Cartwright, or Undersee. She imagined their family gatherings to be like the big boisterous depictions from the movies. Peeta has a self-deprecating charm that allows him to fit in wherever he goes; she can’t imagine him not enjoying the holidays.

Her family on the other hand had always been small, made smaller by circumstance and time. She’d still loved Thanksgiving, but it was just her and Prim now and with her sister abroad for the semester, she’d decided to work rather than wallow alone.

He groans, “I ducked out early. I’ve been helping with Thanksgiving orders at the bakery all week and I’m all Mellarked out. Then there was the cake this morning; Can you believe someone actually planned a Thanksgiving Day wedding? I thought those were just made up for Hallmark Movies. I’ve been up since 3am. I’m so tired, Katniss,” he says with exaggerated head slump.

She tisks, standing from her seat in anticipation of the hulking man at table 2’s empty coffee cup. “Sounds like you should be at home in bed, instead of caffeinating here.”

“And miss the best part of my week so far? Never.”
