At Last Light, Charrelin was beginning to realise the way she felt for Rolan wasn’t just skin-deep. There was a fondness growing for each time they agreed to sneak off and forget how terrible their lives were for a while, in a way both assumed was simply physical, but didn’t have the time or certainty to affirm if it was true. Nothing was certain, and tomorrow either of them could be dead. If not, they still had their futures pulling them in opposite directions. Futures that made the fleeting thing they shared look trivial.

But the fleeting thing was mumbled conversations that lasted for what seemed like hours, touches on skin that has never been treated so gently, and a vulnerability she hasn’t shown anyone in forever. The heat of somebody else’s skin to warm her after what felt like a lifetime alone. It was a fling, but only by technicality. The man she didn’t bother to think of a few tendays ago was now the one she longed to be alone with.

However, were she to admit to herself that she was slowly being engulfed by the thought of him, and let herself be, he would be caught in the raging inferno that is her life. And it would ruin his.
