Après la réussite de son premier album, Road Story, sorti en 2012 et l'excellence des concerts qui ont suivi, ce deuxième essai en studio du pianiste Igor Gehenot était fort attendu. Notons d'abord que le trio connait un changement important puisque le contrebassiste Sam Gertsman, retenu par ses obligations aux côtés de la chanteuse Mélanie De Biasio et du trompettiste Jean-Paul Estiévenart, a été remplacé par Philippe Aerts. Un choix judicieux si l'on considère que ce dernier, qui a longtemps joué avec la pianiste Nathalie Loriers, a jadis montré, en plus d'évidentes qualités techniques, de brillantes dispositions pour improviser sur le genre de musique lyrique qui constitue l'essence de l'art d'Igor Gehenot. On pourra s'en rendre compte sur la ballade In the Wee Small Hours Of The Morning, le standard de David Mann autrefois popularisé par Frank Sinatra qui est l'unique reprise du disque. Entre les notes cristallines du piano, Arts y délivre un accompagnement et un court solo dont la sûreté mélodique et la profonde sensibilité tout en rondeur ne sont pas sans rappeler le grand Charlie Haden.

Crush qui débute ce recueil est une composition animée dont les arrêtes rythmiques plus marquées feront probablement mouche en concert. Le leader y fait preuve d'une grande clarté d'expression, parfaitement soutenu par la batterie arborescente d'un Teun Verbruggen particulièrement en verve. Evidemment, ce sont les ballades romantiques qui constituent le cœur battant du répertoire: Interlude, Song From Eden et Deep Unseen sont de magnifiques photographies intimistes où le pianiste suggère énormément avec peu de notes, laissant le silence perforer la mélodie pour créer des atmosphères aussi aérées que poignantes. L'interaction entre les trois musiciens est magique. Elevée au rang d'art, elle enrichit les compositions de myriades de ponctuations et autres richesses harmoniques et rythmiques qui transcendent cette musique contemplative en lui procurant une dimension collective quasi-irréelle. Mais Gehenot a aussi un sens aigu du swing comme il le démontre sur l'excellent Jaws Dream, un thème enlevé sur lequel le pianiste s'envole avec une déconcertante facilité. Avec de tels albums qui s'écoutent en boucle sans lassitude, Igor Gehenot n'aura aucune difficulté à nous entraîner avec lui pour la suite de ses aventures.
