So, Here’s Another Blog...
Hello world,
I’ve been a teacher for more than 10 years, the majority of which has been spent teaching in Vietnam. I finally decided to start a blog that no one will ever read sharing all of my adventures, allegories, and anecdotes over the years. Don’t you worry about me; I’m not done yet! I’m currently in the midst of my 2nd decade in Vietnam and still going strong.  My Current Happenings:

Iniisip ko gusto ko din matry mag-work abroad para may kasamang travel na din kaso nung inopen ko kay Mama na gusto ko sabi nya bakit pa eh ako na nga nagma-manage nung family resort and may nasimulan na din akong ipatayo na sariling business.
Na-establish ko na yung roots ko dito sa Pilipinas, specifically dito sa hometown namin. Ang hirap na iwan pero what if magpaka-selfish ulit ako at lumayas para mag-abroad? Char lang, I can't huhu.
Medyo nanghihinayang tuloy ako bakit di pa ako nag-abroad nung medyo bata pa ako. Ilang beses din akong inalok ng tita ko na bigyan ng recommendation as English teacher sa China, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Spain bilang may TESOL certificate ako pero lagi akong umiiwas nun.
Going further back naiinis din ako na di ko sineryoso pag-aaral ko the first time around, ang saya siguro maging exchange student or mag-masters abroad. Lalo ngayon ko lang talaga naa-appreciate yung una kong course na Agribusiness Management and yung career opportunities nya abroad.
Arrrgggh andami kong regrets in life pero wala naman na akong magagawa but keep moving forward, make the best out of what I have now. Ah basta magta-travel na lang ako abroad for leisure, pag natapos talaga pandemic itutuloy ko na mga naunsayaming travel plans ko.

Jan 13th: Is the Great American Teacher Dead?
I have many questions as a person involved in education.
Are we enriching our classes with what the new era provides or are we in the comfort of old teaching? 
Is every class beneficial for my student? 
Are we just spending hours in the class or learning as we implement new things?
"It is believed that Demosthenes stuttered and had great difficulty speaking. But he had a lot of will and the desire to improve his speech. [The] legend indicates that he spoke with stones in his mouth and also practiced speaking while running, strategies to help him control his voice and overcome his difficulties with speech." As Demosthenes, that rehearsed, researched, controlled... practiced, practiced, practiced, people who are in charge of education must rehearse and find ways to help students be involved. Poor education must not be allowed in the mind of someone that whats to emulate the great teacher. All that we deliver to the students must be consciously filtered, analyzed, and scrutinized. We have to worry about education, then we need to practice. We need to use technology that suits the need of our students. I think that a great teacher cannot be behind. I see teachers carrying out this work exploring tools and then teaching. 
Is technology in our hands sufficient to help our TESOL students learn? I think that we need to think about how to renew ourselves. Words that have been in my mind are disruption, adaptation, and divergent thinking. Education is in constant change, doing the same thing will not help. 
Disruption: people are afraid of changing because they wonder if it will work. I think that we need to be excited to fail and transform education. Failing once, twice, and then finding the successful way to teach will be marvelous. In simple words, we need to break something to repair it. 
Adaptation: A change to become part of an environment that is not suitable. Sometimes teachers want that students change and that unfortunately does not happen or will happen really slowly. It is us the teachers that need to swing and learn to flow in different environments. 
Divergent thinking: We need to think differently, sometimes use something that has been previously used is ok, but now is time to innovate, now is time to think, as others have thought about how education can be better. 
Have we thought of helping our students make a self-discovery? or "thinking about thinking", I think that this is a challenge. I would like my students to teach me, to dig into technology. Recently, I learned that many teachers took cell phones away from the students. Why don't they use this powerful tool?
 Sometimes, I have been taught technology and shortcuts by students. Let's make this era an adapted education getting rid of certain rules that limit even the teacher from learning. We need to see from the outside to the inside. Many forbidden things can be benefitial. Have you gone to unknown grownds using a technological tool and in the end you succeed in your class? If you do not try now, when? I see change and the use of technology as a challenge especially in Mexico where I teach.
To succeed in a technological class, which is not in the reading, but I consider this important to become a great teacher, those days especially in the conditions given by the pandemic that started in March 2020, I want to give you some ideas taken from a video to be sure that even being far away we can continue helping our students: 
-Anticipate barriers caused by using technology, do not let your students stress.
-Define the objective of the lesson and then choose our technological tool, think about their reaction.
-Build a personal learning network, ask for advice help, ask to observe a class. 
-Integrate technology into the assessment, be friendly, and do not overwhelm them with technology, it is not good as well.
-Discuss technology with our students, what worked and what did not, receive as much feedback as you can. 
 Because we are using technology in our classroom does not mean students are learning, so we need to focus on the content, placing it in a way that this technology will suit and help to cover the needs of our students. We need to create a great environment.
My challenge right now is that we are not in a face-to-face classroom, I am in a virtual classroom, I do not know how anxious they are, and I don't know if the students watch TV meanwhile wearing class because sometimes I cannot see the faces totally, and I want this to change so I say I'm teaching as it is planed with an objective in mind with the use of technology that I can have my students completely.
I think the teacher must be a guide, who understands every single kid's needs, knows how to connect in certain ways with them, and explores in a certain amount of time different areas in which all of the students can enjoy an interactive ambiance. Instead of insecurities, shame, and anxiety in the classroom, we need to create a secure, caring, respected environment that motivates students. I hope this to be beneficial. 
I loved once that I had a friend from the US and he talked about the Vietnam war. It let my students think differently, so as we change to be a good teacher we can help our students see the world differently too. I also like to tell stories about my travels, I try to teach with real examples, real problems, and now, I have learned to change the activity every 10 min, which I found interesting. I will feel like an effective teacher as I transform my classroom.
We need to transform education, see from the outside what is needed in our classroom, what do we need to change, how are asked to adapt in a classroom environment. We need to be disruptive, we need to adapt and think divergently. We need to help our students be curious so they discover things by themselves. We cannot be only providers, but people who ignite thinking.

Last December 22, Monol treated the students to a delightful Christmas party by serving pasta, fried chicken, and delicious ice cream to their students. But before serving the food, an amazing race challenge was given to the students and they showed us an unmatched determination to finish first!
  To show the students how Christmas is enjoyed in the Philippines, the administration of Monol decided to host a special Christmas Party for the students. To make the party livelier, an amazing race challenge was given to the students.
The Amazing Race Challenge is a game based on the International Reality Show where teams must complete a sequence of tasks to win the game. The players must finish their first task to proceed to the next activity. They will have to do this until they have no more tasks left and they should race to the finish line to win.
The students were divided into 4 groups (Blue, Red, Green, and Violet). There were 9 games to be played to win the game and everyone showed up excited and ready to win.
To start it off easy, the first game was a Cheering Game, each team were given 5 minutes to think of a cheer for their team and show it off to everyone in attendance. Everyone made creative on-the-spot cheers to the delight of the crowd. After every team did their cheer, the facilitator once again announced the rules and proceeded to give a very loud GO! Signal.
After the Go Signal, everybody ran to their respective tasks to finish the games.
Since the tasks were divided, every team started off doing separate tasks.
Shooting the basketball was one task. Each team had to shoot 50 points to finish and proceed to the next task. In this game there was a catch, if you can shoot the ball from half-court, you get to skip shooting 50 points and you will immediately receive your next clue! Unfortunately, no team finished the half-court shot and every team hustled to score 50 points.
There was also a Kalamansi (Lime) Relay, teams should choose 3 members and take turns clipping a plastic spoon to their lips with a Kalamansi (Lime) on the spoon. If the spoon falls, the team member must return to the starting spot and walk around the playing area. If all team members completed this task they will receive their next clue.
To test their golfing skills, a simple game of putting the ball was also challenged to the teams. Each team would only need to put the ball from a close distance to win the games. They need to putt the ball 2 times so that the next clue would be given. This game proved too easy as some participating Monol Students are already good at putting!
A challenge was also set up at the Lounge where students need to stack cups to form a pyramid of cups. But they only need to use some yarn to make the pyramid. Teams were very supportive of whoever was making the stack of cups and although it was difficult, everybody was determined to finish the task. When they have stacked the cups to form a pyramid, the next clue is given.
  Of course, there should be game to test their knowledge. A Quiz Bee was given as a challenge and they should finish it at the Guard House with the Security Guard giving them the test. The test was only 10 questions and the questions were about simple rules about staying in Monol (What time is the curfew.. etc..) The Security Guard already knew that the rule-breakers know every rule and the good students had a hard time remembering the answers.
The second to the last game was a Messaging Game. Teams were tasked to ask 5 strangers if they could borrow their phones so that they could text Merry Christmas (Team Color) to the provided number in the clue. Every participant rushed to their teachers and friends so that they could send a message quickly! If the host has received 5 text messages from the same team then he will give them the last clue.
The last clue will lead them to an Eating Challenge. All teams have the eating challenge as their last task.  And only one person can do this task. But they shouldn’t worry. Delicious Cordilleran Cuisine was served unknowingly to the students. Pinuneg is a Cordilleran Version of sausage.  Each team was given a good amount of pinuneg to consume. Dinakdakan was also served in portion. Dinakdakan is an Ilocano delicacy which is delicious. When the facilitator sees that the team has finished, he gives them the signal to run to the Dining Hall to win the race.
In the end, it was the Red Team who won the game followed by the Green Team. The teams won lots of food and even the Blue team and Violet team who finished last were still given food as prizes because everyone did a good job to try to win.
But again, they were surprised when Carbonara and fried chicken were being served at the dining hall. They were hungry during the games and so the food was pleasing to them as they fell in line to get a taste. Ice Cream was also served as 12 tubs of this delicious dessert was spread at the dining hall, and everybody also lined up to get some ice cream.
After eating, the Emcee interviewed the students and handed out the awards. Everybody felt that the spirit of Christmas was alive and well here at Monol. The Graduation ceremony continued after the games and after the feast.

Doing a ‘Masters in TESOL’
Over the past year I’ve been studying a Master’s Degree in TESOL at the University of Manchester in the UK. 
My reasoning behind it was to further my career in the field of TESOL, as I’d ideally like to open up my own language school in the not too distant future. This meant leaving my job and life in Vietnam and returning to the UK for a year to study.
Following my previous post on Teacher Development vs Teacher Training, I did explain the reasoning behind why teachers may seek this route and how it affects them prior and following. (Something to read for further and background knowledge). I think something to understand about doing a MA in TESOL is the realistic element to actually ‘living’ it, as opposed to just ‘studying’ it. A lot of what I was unprepared for and did not expect, was the culture shock inside the classroom. 
Culture
Something to remember is that within the UK, a large amount of the big cities and universities actually have a large population of international students, with the majority being from Asia. On my MA course, out of around 40 students, 90% of the students resided from China. This is very important to remember as it can directly affect the working and studying environment in which you’re in. Some issues I personally faced from studying in this environment was:
- Lack of collaboration, communication & English skills
- Inability to critically think towards concepts and ideas
- Difficulty to share opinions or personal experiences
These were just some of the issues and that is because of the large culture difference. This directly affects the way you study, as most of the course relies on group work and collaboration of ideas between peers. Every student on the course has teaching experience and has been within a teaching environment. Hearing, learning and sharing about it supports a large part of studying on the course and I personally noticed, as did a handful of other students, that this was not available due to the mixture of students and the clash of cultural learning differences.
Reflection
The course (for the UoM) was split into 2 semesters, the first focusing heavily on reflection on our teaching practices and the 2nd semester focusing on moving forward from the masters, and what we could use to a practical level in the future. The reflective element to the first semester was strange, as being pulled out of teaching experiences, that we were capable of, to then question our practices felt almost like taking a step back or re-doing out teacher training.
For some, the large input of methodology, concepts of pedagogy and academic readings into what we had already been doing for 3+ plus years, felt quite frustrating and difficult to grasp. By looking backwards firstly, instead of forwards, it did feel like a struggle but ultimately, provided us with the background understanding in which our teaching practices were built upon. Now understanding the foundations to both TESOL teaching practices and our own, it was clearer to see how we might change and adapt our practices to benefit from the newly learnt concepts, ideas and pedagogy that we had learnt. 
An interesting thing for myself personally was learning about the different paradigms of TESOL, which even though I had been exposed to and involved within, it was still very much a new concept that I enjoyed learning about and was grateful that I had learnt about it, so I could move forward with my teaching practices in the future.
Practicality
During the course, it is important to note that the level of practically is zero. The course is strictly from an academic and theoretical perspective and there is actually no practice of ‘teaching’ involved with the year of studying. This was quite shocking for me, with having just left teaching in the classroom for the last 3 years to now being in the reverse role of the student instead. Some students enjoyed this aspect but others felt the shake of not practically reflecting what they had learnt.
Personally for myself, I work much better when explaining what I have learnt, as to enforce the understanding. I would have ideally done this through learning and then using that information in a practical teaching setting. Luckily, I had managed to find a part time teaching job during the year and this actually helped in gaining more understanding with what I was learning in class.
The second semester adds more of a practical element, in the sense that the assignments provide options which are focused towards development. Within two of my assignments, I was given the opportunity to create a course design for teacher training and for teacher development. I enjoy these assignments especially as they involved some form of practically to my learning. I knew that I would use the concept of design in development and training programmes and so for myself, this was extremely useful. I could see myself doing those exact activities in the future and this felt more use of my time, than the first semester had felt.
Overall
If you’re looking into doing a Master’s degree in TESOL, or to further yourself as a language teacher, my advice is know what you want first. My post on Teacher Development vs Teacher Training is especially helpful in understanding the first steps towards doing more education, as it explains the differences between ‘Development’ & ‘Training’. This is quite important to know and could essentially save you a year of time wasting. Another time saver would be reading my post on Qualified Teacher Status, believe me, I wish I had known about it sooner.
It all massively depends on what you want to do in the future and you need to have a very clear picture of what that is before you decide on doing further education. Initially, I wanted to go to Korea and work with a University setting, to move away from language schools and the issues that come with them. This reason led me to my Masters degree but actually, I wish I would have done a PGCE instead.
A PGCE offers Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which is a recognised teaching licence and allows you to work in a government issued school, both in your own country and internationally. This firstly means, you can work in international schools ANYWHERE and secondly, if you don't want to do language teaching anymore, your skill set is more specified to do other things in teaching. Another reason is that a PGCE offers a third of the credits required to pass a Master’s degree. If I had done a PGCE first, then a Masters after, I would have had a third of it done already, with a QTS already in hand and would have had a year to focus purely on the academic side. Instead, I feel like I got into my Master’s degree with the focus of further job prospects but instead, I’m realising that I still need more qualifications. My master’s degree DEFINITELY provided me with fantastic TESOL based knowledge that I didn’t expect and didn’t enter into the course specifically for, but that is the reason for why you need to be very, very clear as to why you want to study further.
I am happy that I’ve done this MA. I know so much more about the field of TESOL now than I ever did and it’s so enlightening to me. I know that a lot of what I have learnt is going to directly help me in the future, as it is now with writing these posts. I do wish I was aware to the QTS licence and the route I would have needed to go on to gain it, but it’s all a learning curve.
