I know GRRM has given virtually no agency or interiority to Rhaella up to this point, and I’m not really expecting him to in the future, but I like to headcanon that Rhaella may have compared herself throughout her life to her ancestress Queen Naerys. (Long, more under the cut.)
This comparison may have started when Rhaella was a young teenager, on the cusp of her marriage to Aerys. Naerys, 15 at the time of her marriage to Prince Aegon, may have seemed to Rhaella of an age with her, somewhere roughly between the ages of 12 and 14 at her own wedding. While Naerys was far from the only teenage Targaryen princess married to her own brother - Rhaena, Alysanne, Alyssa, Helaena, Daena, and perhaps Aelora had all done so, not to mention Rhaella’s own mother Shaera - Rhaella may have looked specifically to Naerys to compare the unhappy circumstances of their respective betrothals. The young Naerys had shown no interest in Aegon or indeed any husband, preferring instead to become a septa - a fate forbidden by her father, the future King Viserys II. Instead - perhaps inclined to emphasize the Targaryen-ness of his own children despite the xenophobia against their Lysene mother - Viserys insisted that his two children marry, despite the lack of love on either side (not just Naerys but Aegon, who had already been separated from his mistress of two years, Falena Stokeworth). Rhaella had no known pious leanings herself, and it might be too far to assume that she had any deep romantic feelings for Bonifer Hasty (much less anyone else) based upon one show of public gallantry at a tournament, but she was certainly going into her marriage, as Naerys had, at the explicit direction of her father (though for far more prophetic reasons than were probably on the mind of then-Prince Viserys); what’s more, Rhaella might have compared her brother-husband’s obsessive desire for Joanna Lannister, soon to be extant upon the accession of Jaehaerys II, to the young Prince Aegon’s known lasciviousness going into his marriage to Naerys.
Indeed, Rhaella would have had cause to continue such a comparison during the course of her marriage to Aerys, not the least because of the latter’s very public infidelities. Even early in his reign, Aerys was being likened to Aegon IV, as the former “was exceedingly fond of young women, filling his court with fair maidens from every corner of the realm” and was even rumored to have “as many mistresses as his ancestor Aegon the Unworthy” (whatever Yandel’s skepticism toward such a boast). If Aerys likely never engaged in an affair with Joanna, and if he did not establish the sort of de facto maîtresse-en-titre position made infamous during the reign of Aegon IV, Aerys certainly had his share of extramarital liaisons, such that even Rhaella apparently commented on the king’s penchant for “‘turning my ladies into his whores’”. Did Rhaella, observing the king’s open, omnivorous desire for other sexual partners, think about Queen Naerys, who likewise was forced to watch her husband entertain mistress after mistress during the course of their marriage? Did Aerys’ lewd public jokes - most notably his remark about Joanna’s breasts - remind Rhaella of Aegon’s cruel and petty japes toward both his wife and his mistresses - as when Naerys asked to live as “brother and sister”, or when Barba Bracken complained about Melissa Blackwood’s apparent lack of a fuller figure? Did Aerys’ violent retaliation against his mistress in 274 AC, when the king tortured to death both the woman and the rest of her family for supposedly poisoning his infant son, recall for Rhaella the torture of Terence Toyne and the beheading of both Bethany Bracken and her father by Aegon the Unworthy?
Too, Rhaella might have found, as Naerys did, that a husband’s notorious infidelity did not protect her from either suspicion or suffering at his hands. Aegon IV had invented the accusation of adultery, and specifically adultery with Prince Aemon, as a means of hurting and humiliating Naerys as well as undermining the dynastic position of his hated son and heir. If the charge was patently ludicrous given the parties supposedly involved - not to mention the utter lack of scruple Aegon felt about flaunting his own affairs - Naerys nevertheless had to rely upon the martial skills of Aemon as her champion to publicly restore her good name. In turn, perhaps Rhaella thought of Naerys as she herself was accused of infidelity by her husband: Aerys’ declaration to the small council that he had determined Rhaella’s dead children were not his because “‘[t]he gods [would] not suffer a bastard to sit the Iron Throne’” may have smacked too strongly for Rhaella of Aegon’s attempt to identify Daeron as the bastard son of Naerys and Aemon, and if Rhaella did not have to literally fight for her life as a result of the accusation (or nominate someone else to do so), the queen may have nevertheless felt that her imprisonment - and the resulting public advertisement of her supposed lack of marital virtue - was not too far off from Naerys’ legal trial to the same. (Perhaps Rhaella privately mused on the irony of her husband shifting blame from his wife to his mistress, followed by his public recommitment to nuptial fidelity, after the death of Prince Jaehaerys, just as Naerys may have considered the irony of Aegon being confronted with his mistress having a sexual relationship with a Kingsguard after falsely accusing Naerys of the very same sort of affair.)
Moreover, however much Aegon IV and Aerys II sought sexual outlets outside of marriage, both continued to rape their wives for the rest of their respective lives. If Rhaella had not experienced the sinister twisting of a pious request for a chaste marriage into a demand for sexual gratification, as Nears had, she certainly had no power or authority to prevent Aerys from demanding sex with her whenever he wished. As Rhaella suffered the increasingly violent sexual encounters with her husband, did her thoughts turn to Naerys, forced to “perform her wifely duties for the rest of her life” in the euphemism employed by Yandel? Did Rhaella extend any bitterness toward Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, that ostensible paragon of chivalric heroism, who had stood by and apparently done nothing while his brother raped his sister - much as, Rhaella may well have thought, her own husband’s Kingsguard knights, publicly celebrated for their knightly prowess, stood just outside the door, consciously deafened to her cries and blinded to her scars? As her pregnancies ended so often in miscarriage, stillbirth, or death in early infancy, did Rhaella think of Naerys, who had lost her short-lived twins, the stillborn boy who was the twin of Daenerys, and the child whose birth cost the queen her life? When she gave birth to Viserys, after so many pregnancies that had ended in grief, did Rhaella compare herself to Naerys, who had also in her early 30s given birth to a second living child after multiple infant losses?
Too, on the subject of children, did Rhaella see any parallel between the hatred of Aegon IV for his son and heir Daeron and the increasing antipathy between Aerys II and his son and heir Rhaegar? The tense factionalism that Grand Maester Pycelle observed between the respective supporters of father and son may have recalled for Rhaella the similar divide between the anti-Dorne, pro-war, anti-Daeron proponents of Aegon IV and Daeron’s openly pro-Dornish faction. Indeed, the parallel might have seemed even more strengthened by that Dornish connection, as Rhaegar, like Daeron, had taken a Martell bride and counted among his supporters his wife’s uncle, Prince Lewyn Martell of the Kingsguard, just as Daeron’s greatest champion was his brother-in-law, the ruling Prince Maron Martell. If Aerys II had not gone so far as to launch a military attack against Dorne, as Aegon IV had tried (and failed) to do multiple times, his sniping, xenophobic comments toward his half-Martell granddaughter and graceless treatment of both Princess Elia and Prince Lewyn during Robert’s Rebellion reflected a king who negatively linked the Martells with the son he deeply suspected. If young Prince Viserys was as much the biological son of Aerys and Rhaella as Rhaegar was, perhaps the queen worried that Aerys would use her younger son the way Aegon IV had used his doted-upon bastard Daemon (especially as the age difference between each set of brothers was exactly the same) - that is, as an alternate or ostensible alternate heir, the better to undermine and needle his eldest son. Indeed, the king’s paranoid protectiveness of Viserys, and his separation of the bay from Rhaegar, only underlined the divide between the brothers, while the contemporary rumor mill even encouraged the idea that Aerys would set aside Rhaegar in favor of Viserys (much as Aegon’s infamous gift of Blackfyre to Daemon suggested, to some, the intent of the king to do the same with Daemon).
Naerys, of course, had not lived to see the First Blackfyre Rebellion, and in fact may never have witnessed the gift of Blackfyre to Daemon in the first place. Nevertheless, at the outbreak of Robert’s Rebellion, perhaps Rhaella found herself where Naerys might have been had she lived: a queenly eyewitness to a great civil war, wherein an aristocrat with a strain of Targaryen blood challenged (eventually, at least) her own son for the right to the Iron Throne. As Naerys, had she survived, might have seen the First Blackfyre Rebellion as the sins of her husband come back to haunt the dynasty - Aegon IV’s lasciviousness and hatred toward both his son and his son’s ideals, manifested in the person of Daemon Blackfyre - so perhaps Rhaella wondered if Robert’s Rebellion represented the sins of her husband returned to the royal family, as Aerys II’s cruelty and tyranny had driven Jon Arryn, Eddard Stark, and Robert Baratheon into open rebellion (however else Rhaella may have felt toward the rebel leaders and the rebellion more generally). Maybe Rhaella wondered if Naerys had been spared, through her early death, the pain she herself now had to undergo, watching her realm suffer the bloodshed and destruction of war thanks in no small part to the terrible reigns of their respective husbands (though of course we have no way of knowing how Rhaella felt about her son’s responsibility in the war, just as we cannot know how Naerys might have felt about Daeron II’s reign and the outbreak of the First Blackfyre Rebellion).
So in her last months and weeks on Dragonstone, not knowing that she was soon to share the ultimate fate of Queen Naerys - that is, death in childbirth - did Rhaella again compare herself to the queen a century prior whose life had likewise been full of suffering? Did she think of the death of her son Rhaegar as Naerys may have thought of the death of her brother Aemon (who had also died the year prior to her own death) - the violent sundering of a family bond (if not necessarily the removal of a strong champion for her), and the death of a family hero in defense of an unworthy king, leaving Rhaella isolated against her husband (who did not have long to live in any event) and the world at large? As much as Rhaella may have wanted to name her unborn daughter after the Targaryen Princess of Dorne in order, perhaps, to remind Prince Doran of their shared heritage (the better to seek rescue and an asylum for herself and her children), did Rhaella also remember the name “Daenerys” because Queen Naerys had used it for the daughter who might have provided a small personal comfort in Naerys’ latter years? As Naerys had lived to witness the extinction of the Targaryen dragons (caused, she may have believed, by her own participation in heretical incest), with power irreversibly shifted to the vassals of the crown, so Rhaella lived to see the extinction of the Targaryens as a ruling dynasty, royal authority handed to one of those very vassals.

Blossoms Playlist Annotations Because This Is Tumblr Dot Com and God Can't Stop Me
Finished my 270k fanfic and don't yet know how to fill the void in my heart so I'm doing what the title of this post implies: posting the Blossoms writing (or well, more often commuting to work while thinking about the vibes) playlist and then writing a silly little one-paragraph annotation for why it's on there because hey, maybe like two people outside of myself would get a kick out of that.
Daffodil // Florence + The Machine: I think this was the first song back in July 2023 when dem and I were driving through Illinois with a fresh case of FFXVI brainrot and I went wait wait. Stop. Run that back. Apply the Blorbo Filter. And so it's just been the general Dion stage-setting song in my brain ever since.
Fortunate Son // Creedence Clearwater Revival: Listen. Listen. Terence Poirier is not the first High Fantasy Gay Guy With Military Trauma to have this song on his Jod Blorbo Playlist and he will not be the last. Country boy I love youuuuuuuuuuu.
Young Pilgrims // The Shins: I listened to this song a lot when I was ten-ish, so I associate it strongly with being the age Terence is at this stage in the fic and well. Damned if he doesn't want to fly the whole wreck into the sea.
Wicked Annabella // The Kinks: I mean. The title. It's here because it's titled that. I skip it every time I listen because the vibes are not there but I will never remove it from the playlist.
The Boy with the Thorn in His Side // The Smiths: Annnd in the wake of Wicked Anabella's arrival on the scene Dion gets a fun new crisis of suddenly not being believed or valued by most of the adults in his live. Also "a murderous desire for love" yeah there he is that's him officer yeah he's reading that gay fantasy adventure novel for the sixth consecutive time.
Skyline Pigeon // Elton John: Turn me loose from your hand let me join the military at thirteen because that would somehow be better than the home environment you have cultivated here. But yeah in all universes and circumstances I'm 🥲 about this song in relation to Dion.
The Well // The Crane Wives: Wow for once it looks like I'm gonna make a character playlist without a Crane Wives song on it look at me embracing variety and personal growth wait what is--my GOD it's the most Blossoms!Terence-coded song ever written. I put it pretty early but honestly it applies to him in every act. It's him. That's him. Wave the flag, tell the boys to go home.
Any Way the Wind Blows // Cast of Hadestown: Act I and II Terence simply has severe Hadestown Eurydice coding. He's seen how the world is. Meanwhile Dion wears his heart out on his sleeve/is touched by the gods. Also the transition between the end of this and the start of Sunlight IS one of my proudest playlist ordering choices ever.
Sunlight // Hozier: Wait wait wait the prince is kind? He is beautiful and kind and has warm brown eyes and cares for me and treats me with gentleness and????? Yeah I'll be the Icarus to his certainty. I'll grow wings and fly in defiance of God for his sake. The Knight of the Stars Undying finds his sun.
Making the Most of the Night: Every single gay fictional character has Their Carly Rae Jepsen Song and this is indisputably Terence's. Hijack that prince, sir knight.
Piazza, New York Catcher // Belle and Sebastian: Was listening to this on a walk at work and got fully stunlocked both by "are you straight or are you gay" (Terence, actively getting a nosebleed) but more importantly. I love you, I've a drowning grip on your adoring face. / I love you, my responsibility has found a place. Terence. Buddy. How's the gay love as only purpose and bulwark against depression going kiddo.
Please // Ludo: Fifty million thanks to Bel for flagging this as a tedi song and in the process Ludopilling me god I love this band. But yeah the Imperial Wedding chapter. The apprehension. The devotion. The promise to return.
The Millionaire Waltz // Queen: You cannot convince me that in a modern au context Dion would not be fatally obsessed with glam rock. But this song felt very fitting for Dion at this point in the fic. The yearning. The loneliness. Thinking things like "my fine friend, take me with you and love me forever" but not, you know, being gay about it or anything, just putting letters in his heart reliquary jar like a normal teen.
If It's True // Cast of Hadestown: Terence really switches hard to the Orpheus role after Act II. I basically wrote all of his section of Chapter 17 to this song. Anthem of the implicit Terence v. God plot of the rest of the fic.
Search And Destroy // Florence + the Machine: Similarly I wrote basically all Terence's sections of Chapter 22 with this on a loop. He's the world's forgotten boy and he is going to start killing.
Seven Nation Army // The White Stripes: Hey that wholesale dedication to killing your way to your prince's side isn't having any physical or mental repercussions, right? Right?
Letter to Memphis // Pixies: Letters. Trying to get to you. You get it.
Path to Isolation // Jeff Williams: I am sorry I am so sorry for bringing the RWBY soundtrack into this but. Well. This song is very apt for a smothered and lonely young person with a hostile presence growing within them until it kills something they hold dear. A stranger to my heart has filled my mind, man.
Dog Gone // Frank Black and the Catholics: Okay okay so the thing about this song is the singer wrote it because his wife was so upset about her dog dying that she wished a meteor would come destroy the earth, and so he wrote a song from the perspective of the meteor. Which just felt kind of right, for Terence finding Dion after Hypatia's death.
Creep // Radiohead: I mean I don't even have to explain this one, do I?
Ruthlessness // Cast of EPIC: The Musical: GARUDA. I. I had to put something on here for Benedikta and her saw trap. Also she really did look at Dion and Terence, projecting heavily, and say, "Close your heart, the world is dark, and ruthlessness is mercy--die." Like the combination of hard advice and murderous rage. It's For Her.
Rodeo // Amy Ray: Love is a kindness that I've never known before.
Something Good // Julie Andrews, Bill Lee: That god thinks that mortal's love is divine grace! If Terence can love him then perhaps he is not a monster! Perhaps there is goodness within him, if Terence can see it.
Blossoms // The Amazing Devil: Helloooooo song whose lyrics I misquoted to get the title!! I'd been listening to this song all the time for years just waiting for a blorbo to match it and Dion Lesage immediately stepped into it like a perfectly fitted chain-mail corset ready for battle.
27 // Fall Out Boy: Bel mentioned this one after reading the Ash chapter and I became insane immediately. Live soundtrack of Terence's mental health crashing and burning dramatically as Dion's military star rises during the invasion.
Empire & The Sun // The Moth & The Flame: Okay so full disclosure I actually found it when dem and I were putting together a playlist for Phineas Thatch Midst our good friend but. Terence. Returning to Dion over and over again even in the face of the widening gulf the world puts between them.
My Love Mine All Mine // Mitski: Dion. Augh. Dion. Dion choosing love. I think I hauve covid.
Mars // Sleeping At Last: Some courageous soul with a great ear put together a Dion playlist like two weeks after the game came out and I can't find it now but this song was on it and it really became my guide for how I wanted the end of the fic (excluding the epilogue) to feel. Like light in the cold and dark, with a sad melody.
#i'm being silly i am having fun#i have gay knight disease and i must do something about it#i'm adding needless additional tags#so that i#can tag#teredion#without bothering anyone in that tag#in case i want to find this later

DYANNE
When dinner became ready to be eaten, Dyanne wanted to finish it already to come back and lock herself in her room. She did not want to see Anabella. Her mother finished touching up her hair, braiding it to make her seem more demure. Discreet even. “I haven’t seen you in a while. How’s things with Lord Rosfield ? Is he kind to you ? Gallant even, I hope ?” Dyanne smiled, facing her reflection in the mirror. “He is, dear Mother. He is focused on my well-being any second he’s near me. He’ll be a fantastic husband, no doubt.” Her mother stared at her, one eye of a sweet lilac shade and the other, of a golden colour.
Beatrix had curly hair, striking red on the top, silver-locked on the bottom. She was thin and gracile, always wearing the lightest shade of blue and gold. “And… Have you flowered yet, my dearheart ?” Dyanne blushed furiously at her mother’s words. She didn’t understand all the matter about her moons. She was ten and three, yes, it was later than the usual for her people, but at least, she still was young.
“Yes, Mother, I did. I was so sad you weren’t there, I had to take a warm bath to clean myself, and I was in such pain. I never felt that before. Like my body was twitching, I always felt a knot in my lower stomach. I didn't quite understand what was happening to me. I needed you.”
Her mother displayed parts of her hair, away from her face, cupping the cheeks of her child, she brought the girl closer to her, letting her nestling in her neck. Dyanne hummed the sweet scent of Beatrix. “I am beyond sorry, my sweet love. I should’ve been there more often, if I ever knew. But thirteen is a great age to blossom, my little swan. It is only a minuscule part of women’s life. You’ll be forever okay, even bleeding a few days in a month. Don’t fear it : accept it.”
The two ladies went downstairs, before reaching the dining room, where Josiah and Darius waited for them. Dyanne sat nearby. Jill was on her side, holding her hand softly to encourage her. She kissed her friend’s cheek tenderly before starting a conversation with her. Jill was always with her, whenever the two weren’t with the boys. Girls' language would some say. But Jill and Dyanne often spoke of swords, books, things ladies weren’t usually very much allowed to touch. Yet, none of them could care any less.
If the realm had something to look up to, it was both their beauties. Dyanne was a cold beauty, one you’d look at when she was gazing away. But Jill, Jill was freezing cold. Her uncommon silver hair and blue eyes, made her unapproachable. Yet, the girl was as loving as a warm fire through winter. And the two, the two of them, formed a strong, tough glacier.
JOSHUA
Joshua was asleep on his own, in his room. The boy was thinking, on the morrow, he’d become what people always wanted of him. What they expected him to be. Yet, the ten-year-old was distraught. Sure, he was fine with being the Phoenix, but was it all he was ? Would his mother disown him as she did with Clive, throw him a part, when he wouldn’t meet her expectations ? A tear rolled on Joshua’s cheek : He didn’t want to be part of that. He wanted to live on his own terms. Phoenix or not, being a Dominant was a responsibility. Meeting with fate itself, it didn’t matter how cruel it was. Whether it was to him, his family, friends, or anybody around him.
The sound of a burst awoke the boy from his soon slumber. He always had been like that, a light sleeper. But, soon yet, Joshua would get on his feet to run towards the window of his room.
Fire.
Blood.
Corpses.
“Clive, Father!” he screamed.
The door struck against the wall, as a man dashed in, looking straight at the little Duke. “My Lord, let’s get you to safety, we’ve been invaded by the Empire!” Joshua’s eyes went immediately filled with tears, salty drains of water menacing to roll down his chubby cheeks. He burst out of the room, his shoes clapping against the warmed, previously cold, tiles of the castle, before getting ambushed by a trio of three imperials. All waiting for his head. “Let me protect you, Your Grace!” shouted his shield.
“No! I want to find my father and my brother !” How in the hell something like this would ever happen ? He wondered. Yet, Phoenix muttered in him, he whispered to take over. No, I refuse, thought Joshua. He was terrified, frightened, yoked under fear. But the blond boy, strawberry blond-haired even, remained calm. He had to. His hands began to burn, flames getting out of his very fingers, before fire invaded furthermore the room. Turning to ashes the bodies, the shield stepped back, impressed by His Grace. Who, despite his young age, showed talent and conservation. “May the Phoenix bless us your Grace… They certainly infiltrated the Fortress way beforehand. We must hurry to find the Duke and your brother!”
Joshua nodded, brushing off the salty water that contrasted with the wildfires that occurred, passing doors and doors, halls and halls. He then noticed how the walls looked alike then, under the orange and red shades of death. He searched every single corner he could find. But nothing was all he found.
“Father!” he shouted again when he noticed the figure of the latter standing. Talking to a guard, Elwin turned back and welcomed his son to his arms. Before getting him back on the ground. “We will need to get Joshua to safety, back to the Capital. Make haste!” The boy climbed on his steed, before its head shut and the boy fell again. Aching, Elwin turned back. “What in the God-...
“Sorry, Your Grace, that won’t be possible,” explained one of his guards. He let the lifeless body of the previously white owl fall to the ground. “You honourless snakes!” the Duke screamed. Joshua feared again, hiding his face behind his hands. “Run, Joshua, Run!” but before the boy could even answer, his world whole stopped. Swallowed by the aching fangs of death again.
His thoughts.
He couldn’t think.
The blood of his father,
On his face.
He tasted it on his tongue.
The body of the late Elwin Rosfield fell close to his son, his hand touching his boy’s foot. And Joshua stopped moving.
He could feel fire bursting through him.
And soon enough.
The murderers of his father went to hell.
“Here I am, free” pronounced Phoenix.
Help ! Help me ! Clive ! Help me, I am scared !
CLIVE
He ran everywhere.
Searching for Joshua.
Clive’s heart was pounding in his chest, ravenous of seeing his father and brother to assure himself he didn’t fail. Yet, none of these wishes were granted, and all he continued to do was to run. Run until his breath got short, run until all he could do was to cry on himself. He had to be strong, but Lord Rosfield barely could do that. Instead, all he did was to watch the figure of almighty Phoenix rose into the skies, destroying everything that was in his path. Clive muttered curses between his lips. But he knew something was wrong. Something was off.
“Joshua !” Clive shouted.
He dashed through on his steed, the latter struggling to jump here and there, but Clive had to stop. He fell to the ground, but all he then remembered was that he lost it. He lost it all. The corpse of the previously white beast next to him, he began to scream. Something that terrified Rodney. And then, Clive growled.
But it wasn’t him that growled.
Rodney was sure of that.
Throwing fists against the Phoenix, Ifrit was smirking, hid Clive’s crestfallen spirit. But, soon enough, the bigger standings of Ifrit and Phoenix bit each other, and would inexorably wound one another.
Joshua ! No.
Someone, help me out !
Stop this, I beg of you!
Please, please, please !
But nothing happened, nothing. If not the Phoenix on the ground, a mere prey to the dominant Ifrit, triumphant of his victory upon the Immortal One. However, Clive died with his poor brother that day.
DYANNE
She could barely breathe.
And saying she was sweating, was an understatement.
A blade against her pale throat, Dyanne’s complexion paled. The smile, Anabella wore on her face, made her blood boil. Actually, her entire body was aching, and soon enough, the wine was whirling into the cups as Leviathan warned to act on by herself. Beatrix shook her head. No, sweet daughter, now wasn’t the time to act on a whim. She hoped she wouldn’t go that far, kind Dyanne, however, wished she would. She wished Leviathan would let her shift into something deadlier. But the brunette was also aware doing this would inexorably condemn her parents to a sombre fate.
You could, spoke the Sea Snake.
I won’t, Dyanne answered.
The Imperials looked straight to them three, waiting for an order from their ally to do as being told. But Anabella only chuckled. “Silent I see ? Good to know Leviathan and her Shield are as usable as the rest. Good grief, you two made this mess harder to happen as it should’ve been.” One of them tied her hands, whilst Darius struggled a bit more than she did. Call her docile, but all she saw was the metal growing nearer and nearer her old ones' throat. “What is the meaning of all of this, Anabella?!” shouted Josiah.
The blonde laughed again, arrogantly. “My ascension to a new world. Dear Josiah, and this concludes with you four.” The head of the Hidgins Household gleaned his eyes. Too wide, scarier than ever. Waiting for further explanation, but they never came. Until Darius managed to draw his sword, at least. “Appease yourself, dear, wouldn’t you ?! This is only the beginning for you, don’t you see ?! Keep this one alive to his dear sister, put the parents to silent until we arrive at the Holy Capital.”
The Holy Capital ?!
CLIVE
Crawling, suffering.
Clive wished he was dead.
But here he was not. He couldn’t feel anything. Whatever it was. Whether it was, even. Fingers, feet, arms, face. He could not. But he breathed. That bothered, he breathed. However, his vision was blurred by the sight of blood. Everywhere. On his eyelids, his clothes, his cheeks, his lips. Not only his, but his brother’s, his comrades’. And Clive puked.
But his ear, by his ear, he heard footsteps coming back and forth. Steel. Metal. He didn’t exactly know.
Not that he wanted to.
Nothing made sense any more.
“Tch. Keep him alive, he may be of use to us in the Empire,” he heard, weakly.

The Education of Philip II of Spain
“Zúñiga remained less enthusiastic about the prince’s studies. In June 1541 he noted that ‘for the past two months, I have been more optimistic than I used to be that he will like Latin, which pleases me very much because I believe being a good Latinist is an important part of being a good ruler, for knowing how to govern oneself and others’, - but that precise modifier ‘two months’ was not accidental. At Zúñiga’s suggestion, earlier that year Charles removed Silíceo as his son’s tutor and appointed the Aragonese humanist Juan Cristóbal Calvete de Estrella, ‘a very learned man’ who was ‘of pure blood’ (that is, without any Jewish or Moorish ancestors), ‘as master of grammar to teach all the present and future pages of the prince’. The new instructor immediately exposed his young charges to the best scholarship available.
Although Silíceo despised humanism, he had not entirely shielded Philip from its influence. For example in January 1540, during a visit to Alcalá de Henares to Hunt, Cardinal Tavera decreed that the prince should visit the Complutense University and for three hours Philip toured the classrooms, listening to lecturers in Latin, and sitting in the audience while a bachelor of theology graduated. But full exposure to the new learning began only when Calvete took over, soon assisted by three other instructors: Honorato Juan to teach him mathematics and architecture; Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda to teach him history and geography; and Francisco de Vargas Mexía to teach him theology. All four preceptors had travelled extensively outside Spain and boasted a cosmopolitan outlook that would broaden the prince’s horizons.
From the first, Calvete implemented a clear pedagogical vision. In 1541, he purchased 140 books, and had them specially bound for the prince, more than doubling the size of his library. Almost all these works were written in Latin, either by classical authors (such as Caesar, Cicero, Plautus, Seneca, Terence, Vergil) or by modern humanists including Erasmus (Adages and Enchiridion), Juan Luis Vives (Of the soul and life) and – surprisingly – Philip Melanchthon, Luther’s principal lieutenant (On the art of speaking). Moreover, although works in Latin predominated, Philip became the first Spanish monarch to read Greek (he could eventually manage works by Homer in the original) and he also learned some Hebrew and Aramaic so that he could study the Bible in its original languages. He acquired an Arabic grammar and ‘a book about the Qu’ran His Highness ordered to be bought’. Philip acquired the last item during a visit to Valencia in 1542, perhaps because Honorato Juan (a Valencian) thought it might help his pupil to understand his future Morisco subjects. The visit formed a part of a Grand Tour during which the emperor took his heir to Navarre, Aragon and Catalonia as well as Valencia, to be recognized as ‘heir apparent’ , and en route Calvete, Juan and Sepúlveda – all of whom accompanied Philip – seized every opportunity to provide instruction about the different languages, cultures and histories of his new vassals. Finally, when news arrived that the French had laid siege to Perpignan, the second city of Catalonia, Sepúlveda led a debate among courtiers on the best way to save it – Philip’s first exposure to military strategy.
When the court returned to Castile, Calvete purchased more books in Latin to support his ambitious pedagogic strategy. Works of history – written by classical and medieval authors as well as modern humanists – constituted the largest single category (25 per cent of all books purchased between 1535 and 1545), closely followed by theology (15 per cent of the total), but most disciplines were represented. As he and his pupil finished each volume, Calvete seems to have added a ‘hashtag’ (#) before moving on, and by the time his formal education ceased in 1545, Philip had studied several hundred books on a wide variety of topics. Calvete also exposed the prince to learning in other ways. Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas, who had lived in America for decades, presented him with a dedicated manuscript copy of his Very brief account of the destruction of America; and during a visit to Salamanca in 1543, aged sixteen, he spent his first afternoon ‘inspecting the classrooms and hearing some lectures’ by a university professor. The following day ‘His Highness listened to all the other professors and attended an oral examination in Law… He left very late.” (..)
... Philip’s broad and deep exposure to humanist learning explains not only his facility with Latin but also his forceful style when writing Spanish, as well as his self-confidence (not to say arrogance) when discussing almost every aspect of intellectual endeavour: architecture with architects, geography and history with ministers and academics, and even theology with popes.”

Terence Conran, Designer and Retail Magnate, Is Dead at 88
An entrepreneur of mercurial moods and missionary zeal, he created an empire to market his designs and later opened restaurants in London, Paris and New York.
Terence Conran, a London designer and retailing magnate who eased the gloom of postwar British austerity with stylish home furnishings affordable on a teacher’s salary, and then suffered financial reverses before reinventing himself as an international restaurateur and doyen of modern design, died on Saturday at his country home in Berkshire, England. He was 88.
His family confirmed the death in a statement, without specifying the cause.
Blind in one eye since childhood, Mr. Conran was an entrepreneur of mercurial moods and missionary zeal who created an empire to market his designs, stores known in Europe as Habitat and in America as Conran Shops. After his business declined, he opened restaurants in London, Paris and New York — notably Guastavino’s, a dining cathedral under the tiled terracotta arches of the Queensboro Bridge in Manhattan.
He wrote scores of books on design, cooking and other subjects; turned a London warehouse riverfront into a fashionable South Bank commercial development; founded the Design Museum, Britain’s only museum for contemporary products and architectural designs; and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He also married four times, had five children and collected wildflowers, butterflies, old master paintings and Bugatti pedal cars.
Detractors called him a cynical self-promoter who sold simplistic ideas to the masses, like “democratized luxury,” and struck it rich with a sure thing: the inevitable desire of Britons to climb from grinding wartime privations into a consumer class that could afford to replace the threadbare old sofa with something seen as “modern” and in “good taste.”
But admirers said he tried, with remarkable success, to revolutionize the sensibilities of a rising British middle class, offering not just better food but an idea of what a sunlit breakfast on Sunday should be; not just mod touches for the drab suburban semi detached but a taste of la dolce vita: Scandinavian furniture, Italian lighting, French cookware, Bauhaus-style modular shelving and splashes of Pop Art on the walls.
In a career that spanned six decades, he had only one actual job: At 19, he worked briefly for an architect who helped design the 1951 Festival of Britain, a national exposition intended to give Britons a sense of recovery from the war. It also gave him a frank look at a people weary of shortages, and a glimpse of the future of commercial design.
“They came along in their dreary wartime mackintoshes, gas-mask cases filled with Spam sandwiches, and found bright cafes, music, flowers, modern furniture and a spirit of something that none of them had ever experienced in their lives,” Mr. Conran told The Daily Telegraph, the British newspaper, in 2011.
Over the next decade, he designed simple furniture and sold it in an arcade in Piccadilly; opened his first restaurant, a sandwich-and-salad bar called Soup Kitchen that had one of London’s first espresso makers; and created new lines of fabrics and moderately priced, functional home furnishings.
In 1964, he opened his first Habitat store in Chelsea. Its staff had uniforms by Mary Quant and hairstyles by Vidal Sassoon.
By the late 1980s, after acquiring other chains, he owned 900 stores in Britain, Europe, Japan and America, selling furniture, housewares and clothing. His company, the Storehouse Group, had 35,000 employees and billions in revenues.
But overexpansion — including additions to the upscale Butler’s Wharf on the Thames, where he installed his Design Museum in 1989 and lived in a glass penthouse — corroded his empire. So did his failure to integrate interests reaching into publishing, office products, architecture and real estate. He resigned as chairman in 1990. Storehouse was dismantled, and Habitat was taken over by Ikea, the Swedish furniture giant.
Mr. Conran kept some Conran Shops and recovered in the 1990s, opening many theatrically dazzling restaurants, including Le Pont de la Tour and Mezzo in London, Alcazar in Paris and Berns Salonger in Stockholm. In New York, he and his partner, Joel Kissin, opened Guastavino’s in 2000 under the Queensboro Bridge. The site was dramatic but out of the way, and a few years later became a catered event space.
In 2005, he was named the most influential restaurateur in Britain by CatererSearch, the website of Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine, and his resurrected fortune was estimated at more than $100 million.
Terence Orby Conran was born on Oct. 4, 1931, in the London suburb Kingston upon Thames, to Gerard and Christina (Halstead) Conran. His father was a businessman. His mother, who had a taste for art, nurtured Terence’s creative talents. When he was 13, his left eye was permanently blinded by a sliver of metal that flew up from a lathe he was using.
He attended Bryanston, a private school in Dorset, and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. He did not graduate, but a teacher there, the sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi, became a lifelong friend and mentor.
His first marriage, at the age of 19 to the architect Brenda Davison, lasted six months. He and his second wife, the novelist Shirley Pearce, had two children, Sebastian and Jasper, designers who held various professional and executive positions with their father’s enterprises over the years; they were divorced in 1962. He and his third wife, the food writer Caroline Herbert, had three children, Edmund (known as Ned), Tom and Sophie, and were divorced in 1996. He married his fourth wife, Victoria Davis, in 2000.
He is survived by his wife and his children, as well as 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a sister, Priscilla, a designer and restaurateur.
Mr. Conran became a disciple of Elizabeth David, whose books Europeanized British cooking. Besides design and cooking, his own books explored home furnishings, textiles, gardening and other subjects. An authorized biography, “Terence Conran,” by Nicholas Ind, was published in 1995.
In addition to his 145-acre estate in Berkshire, Barton Court, Mr. Conran had an apartment in London.
From 2003 to 2011, Mr. Conran was provost of the Royal College of Art in London. Besides his 1983 knighthood, a title he said he used only to make reservations, his honors included the Minerva Medal, the highest award of the Chartered Society of Designers, and the Prince Philip Designers Prize for lifetime achievement.

USA/HAITI: Godwin Louis Explores the Worldwide Impact of Afro-Caribbean Sounds and Concepts on Music and Takes them Global
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bbf1d3b3a8580b4d68c5bf8ab11263de/ea6afd782fefbcd9-31/s400x600/d1e28c988fcbd7191415fe1d56a71505422b839a.jpg)
Godwin Louis Explores the Worldwide Impact of Afro-Caribbean Sounds and Concepts on Music and Takes them Global
Saxophonist Godwin Louis had an epiphany when he came to New Orleans to study at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. He explored the city’s music--and kept getting an eerie sense of familiarity. “My mother and father are from Haiti, and though I was born in the States, I lived in Port-au-Prince for a few years in the 1990s,” recounts Louis. “When I moved to New Orleans, I felt that similarity everywhere, in the presence of Catholicism, the funeral marches, the second-line culture, the spiritual traditions tied to vodoun. I said, this is incredible. Where does this similarity come from?”
The answers turned out to be Global (release: Febuary 22, 2019), Louis’ first major release of his compositions and work as a band leader. Louis discovered the impact of Haitians on the music of New Orleans, arguably the musical heart of the US, and with it a history of Haitian presence going back to the French Colonial and Haitian Revolutionary period. Yet as Louis dug into the past, his understanding and musical vision expanded geographically and sonicly, as DNA tests led him to West and Central Africa (“Nago-Kongo”), Brazil, tiny Pacific islands--the entire global filigree of Afro-diasporic peoples and their art.
The resulting double-album of original compositions (with one anthemic concluding piece by composer Hermeto Pascoal) plumbs the past while remaining steadily grounded in contemporary and exploratory musical practices, that improvisatory, ever-fresh edge of jazz. A seasoned sideman--Louis’ touring history reads like a who’s who of jazz and pop--Louis felt it was time to bring his discoveries, in breathtakingly intricate and skillfully rendered form, to the world.
“My travels and studies let me fully explore and find this musical sound dedicated to the diaspora that you hear on Global,” says Louis. “The world is way more connected than we think. We’ve all heard of the Transatlantic trade slave and its tragedies and horrors, but so much came out of it and formed global culture, so much that’s rarely highlighted. You can feel it intensely in places like Santiago de Cuba, Bahia in Brazil, New Orleans, in L’artibonite, Haiti. The musical sound that came from those places has gone global, and it’s all filtered into pop culture. That’s where I started.”
Born in Harlem, Louis remembers encountering the beauties of jazz via his guitarist uncle, Robert “Magic” Saint Fleur. He marveled at his uncle’s ability to improvise and wanted to know his secret. “I was really drawn to that element of improvisation,” recalls Louis. “I would hear him riff off a song, and it seemed like the most incredible thing, how he came up with all these beautiful melodies on the spot. It showcased such knowledge of the songs and total mastery of the instrument.” His uncle encouraged him, then turned him on to Charlie Parker, and Louis was hooked.
He studied at Berklee and made an admirable name for himself among jazz’s creme de la creme. Though relatively young, Louis has already toured, performed, and recorded with Herbie Hancock, Clark Terry, Roger Dickerson, Ron Carter, Al Foster, Jack Dejohnette, Jimmy Heath, Billy Preston, Patti Labelle, Toni Braxton, Babyface, Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Barry Harris, Howard Shore, David Baker, Mulatu Astakte, Mahmoud Ahmed, Wynton Marsalis, and Terence Blanchard, among others, seeing a great swath of Africa, Asia, and Europe in the bargain.
As Louis developed his own style, where gospel and traditional Haitian and West and Central African songs, avant arrangements and grounded grooves collide, he discovered new concepts in African-heritage musical thought that enriched his jazz foundations. Fellow musicians in Mali, for example, based melodic phrases on underlying texts, not on arbitrary numbers of beats or bars.“Because it’s all based on the words, there's no common tempo,” explains Louis. “When the phrase is done, it’s done and then you move on. I decided to experiment with approaching notes the same way. An idea can keep on going. In general, Global questions tradition: Why should the form be one way and not another? If the idea isn’t done yet, it goes on, even when another idea comes. The melody is king in that approach.” The resulting feel is polyphonous, many different voices and perspectives chiming in and overlapping.
The overlap fascinates Louis and inspired many of Global’s pieces. He reveals into how European sacred music seeped into an Afro-diasporic melody found around the Atlantic, rich with triple meter. (“Four Essential Prayers of Guinea”) And how, in counterpoint, African instruments can inform Protestant hymns, despite centuries of church animosity toward West African sounds and forms. (“Bondye Ede-n”) He looks at narrative threads that unite the lyrical forms of Afro-Caribbean and Afro-South American romance (“Present” featuring Cuban singer Xiomara Laugart), and the playing techniques and moods that unite the Francophone cultures of the Caribbean (“Siwèl”).
Yet the wide-ranging journeys remain rooted in Louis’ personal experience as a person with a multilayered heritage and full awareness of past and present struggles. As the composer noted regarding the album’s title suite (“Global, Parts I and II”): “This is about my traveling experiences all over the world. I’ve been to 100 countries as of now. I have so many stories, some sad, some triumphant. So did our ancestors,” Louis reflects. “Sonically, I wanted to pay homage to some of our lesser-known ancestors that contributed to the development of music in Europe. People like Joseph Boulogne, Chevaliers De Saint-Georges who was a brilliant composer during the classical era. Overall, Global is the history of music and culture in the Americas. Cultures that came from Africa, met with indigenous aestheticism, and were refined or rarefied via colonialism, as a result changing the course of music history and culture worldwide.”

-1917: nace Dean Martin, actor y cantante estadounidense (m. 1995).
-1952: nace Liam Neeson, actor irlandés (Star Wars: Episode I, Schindler’s List, Batman Begins).
-1957: nace Juan Luis Guerra, cantautor dominicano.
-1980: muere Henry Miller, escritor estadounidense (n. 1891).
