10 Hidden Details You Never Noticed In The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most well-known and beloved movies ever made. Although it was under-appreciated at the time of its initial release (it was a box office bomb and didn't win even one of the seven Academy awards it was nominated for), it has gone on to become one of the most universally-admired movies of all time.

Anyone who owns a TV and has cable has probably seen The Shawshank Redemption at least once (if not half a dozen times or more). Even so, this long and sprawling prison epic has a lot of specific details hidden away in it; details that even the more eagle-eyed viewer is bound to miss. Let's take a look at some of them!
10 Maybe It's Because I'm Irish
Andy and Red have a friendship that is the stuff of legend. At one point during their many conversations, Andy asks about the origins of Red's nickname. Presumably, it's because of his last name (his full name is Ellis Boyd Redding), but when Red replies to his question, he jokes that "maybe it's because I'm Irish."
Obviously, it's meant to be a wisecrack, but there is a deeper meaning behind the line as well. Although Morgan Freeman plays Red in the movie, the character in the original novella is an Irishman. Frank Darabont just had his heart set on Freeman starring in the role and changed this little detail specifically for him.
9 Frank Darabont's Hands
This actually seems to be something that a few different directors do, but in the case of The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont took the place of Tim Robbins when they were doing shots that were close-ups on his hands.

Darabont had some very specific ideas on how he wanted the scenes to look, so he performed the actions himself instead of having Robbins do so. This was only done for two different actions, though: one shot was a close-up of Andy's hand loading a revolver and the other was a close-up of him carving his name into the cell wall.
8 A Little Low On The Ladies
In all fairness, The Shawshank Redemption is a film set in a men's prison, so it's not an enormous surprise that the bulk of the characters and actors are made up of men too. In this movie that clocks in at nearly two and a half hours long, though, there are actually only two female speaking roles throughout the entire production.
Unsurprisingly, those two characters are just bit parts. The first character is a woman who complains about Brooks' service at the grocery store, and the second woman helps serve Andy at the bank after he's escaped from Shawshank prison.
7 The Rights Stuff
Although it's one of the most famous movies of all time now, The Shawshank Redemption actually bombed upon its initial release. It started being more successful after it was released on video, but one of the keys to its success was undoubtedly the fact that it seemed to be playing on cable television on a nearly constant basis.
Film and TV mogul Ted Turner sold the rights of the film to TNT for a much lower price than was standard, and it was in constant rotation on the cable network because it was just insanely inexpensive for them to air.
6 A Real Prison On The Outside, Sound Stage On The Inside
It's not that unusual for a production to use real life exteriors for some scenes and then use a sound stage to film the interior scenes, but in the case of The Shawshank Redemption, it's for a somewhat atypical reason. The exterior scenes were filmed at the old Ohio State Reformatory, a prison that hadn't been in use for quite a while.

Originally, the plan was to shoot inside of the prison as well, but the interior of the facility was so dilapidated that it was actually less expensive to shoot it on sound stages than to renovate the building itself.
5 Ohio Played Stand In For Maine
Stephen King is one of the most creative and prolific writers in the history of fiction. However, the vast majority of his stories do have one common thread running through them: almost everything that he writes is set in his home state of Maine.
The same goes for The Shawshank Redemption, but the movie itself was filmed in Ohio. The location isn't particularly relevant in terms of the visuals, though. The empty surroundings of any typical prison certainly make it much easier to find a suitable exterior set for a prison movie.
4 Rita Hayworth
Rita Hayworth (and the others who take up residence on Andy's walls) are a significant part of the storyline itself. So significant, in fact, that the original novella that was the source material for the movie was actually titled Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.
Director Frank Darabont decided to shorten the title and remove Rita Hayworth's name, because he didn't want people to assume that the film was about the actress herself. However, before the film went into production, Darabont still got a lot of solicitations from actresses who wanted to audition for the "role" of Rita Hayworth.
3 Room 237
In any Stephen King work or adaptation of a King work, it's very common to find references to other creations by Stephen King. The Shawshank Redemption is no different. In the movie, Red's cell number is 237, which also happens to be the number of the room in the Overlook Hotel where Danny has that encounter in The Shining.

That's only in the novel, though. In the Stanley Kubrick film, the room number where the creepy lady resides is changed to 217. It's unclear why Kubrick made the change, if there was a reason for changing it at all.
2 Location, Location, Location
Although the story of The Shawshank Redemption is ostensibly about Andy Dufresne's escape from Shawshank prison, this sprawling and epic tale is ultimately about much more than that. However, the great escape of Andy Dufresne could just as easily not have happened.
Andy digging a tunnel out of Shawshank and finally being free is one of the most cathartic scenes in movie history, but that could have never happened if Andy had wound up in one of the many other cells in Shawshank prison. Had he just been one cell over, the only place to dig would have been into another cell, foiling his plans completely. It was all due to chance and his privileged position.
1 Towering Tim Robbins
It can be hard to gauge the height of an actor when you're just seeing them on a screen, especially since camera trickery and the blocking of scenes can be used to make certain actors look bigger or smaller. Because Tim Robbins stands at an exceptionally tall 6 foot 5 inches, though, the cast and crew in some instances had to be chosen based on his height alone.
For instance, Andy stealing the warden's suit is a key element of the story line, so the actor who played him had to be nearly as tall as Tim.

What the Digital Brains of the Future Might Be Like
An entrepreneur and long-time neuroscience hobbyist attempts to merge his two loves.

It is the rare entrepreneur who hits it truly big twice. Those who do -- such as Ev Williams, Ted Turner, and Elon Musk -- tend to stay within the original industry that made them. In recent memory, Steve Jobs sticks out for his success in entertainment (Pixar) and computing (Apple).
Which is what makes Jeff Hawkins so intriguing. Having founded Palm (of Pilot fame) and sold it, Hawkins turned his attention back to his long-time hobby... neuroscience. And now he's got another company, Grok, that tries to apply what he learned about neurons and brain processes to the data problems that companies have. While technology has been Hawkins' job for most of his adult life, it's clear that the brain is his passion. His book detailing his synthesis of neuroscience research, On Intelligence, received unexpectedly great reviews from the research community. Nobel laureate Eric Kandel even blurbed the book, calling it "a must-read for everyone who is curious about the brain and wonders how it works."
We spoke at the company's modest offices in Redwood City for a Q&A that was published in this month's magazine.

What is Grok?
Grok is software that helps companies take automated action from streaming data. It does this by finding complex patterns in machine -- generated data, and making predictions. It might use smart-meter data to predict energy needs, or data from complex machinery to predict equipment failures. The underlying technology is based
So how does it actually work?
Grok is self-learning -- it finds patterns in data without human intervention. Feed Grok streams of data, and it automatically models the data the way a human analyst might -- by understanding which data streams are useful, trying to represent the data, and tuning complex algorithm parameters to improve results. Because it's automated, Grok is ideal for analyzing thousands of data streams. Grok also learns continuously. Unlike most other analytics techniques, Grok learns from every data point, versus having to be retrained. No analyst needs to make a decision about when to take models offline and update them.
How do most people work with data now?
What most people do today is put data in big databases and analyze the correlations. Say you have 1 billion users on Facebook, and you're trying to figure out what advertisement to feed to 20 percent of them. You want one big model on all these data. What we do is different: Say someone has 10,000 smart meters, and they're trying to figure out what energy consumption is going to be two hours from now. We build 10,000 models. You can't have a data analyst doing that. If you want to model every machine in a factory or every windmill in a windmill farm, it's all about automation. We build lots of little models -- that's the future of data.
Most advanced analytics require substantial human expertise and are done in batch fashion -- data are gathered for some time period and then processed in big chunks. This process can be slow and is hard to apply to a broad range of problems as the world changes. It also means using huge databases, which are expensive -- it's complex to maintain and move large amounts of data around. Grok, like your brain, is a streaming system. Data pass through Grok, predictions are made -- but Grok doesn't need to store the data to function. With millions of devices generating billions of data streams, the ability to store only what's critical can be a significant advantage
In industrial applications, more -- basic approaches -- say, looking at a sensor to ensure a temperature does not exceed a certain value -- can be used to monitor equipment and alarms. These approaches have limitations: By the time an alarm is triggered, it may be too late. Or what's normal for one machine may not be normal for the next.
Grok lets you automate processes that previously required manual adjustment. Heating or cooling systems can be turned on or off intelligently. Applications can be migrated between servers based on load. Network traffic can be rerouted. Unusual behavior of heavy machinery can generate alerts that recommend specific action. Instead of reacting to problems, you can anticipate them.
Who else might use your software?
People who want to do anomaly prediction. Grok works as if it's listening to very noisy melodies and going, "I recognize some of this. That sounds a little familiar." And all of a sudden it says, "This sounds totally different. I've never seen this before," so it goes beep, beep. There are a lot of people looking for anomalous behavior in credit-card and security applications. It turns out this might be even bigger than prediction. But of course, anomalies are the flip side of predictions -- if I can't predict well, then I have an anomaly.
So how does this relate to your previous work on the brain?
First of all, we have a very complex brain; it's got all these different components. But we're just talking neocortex here. Every mammal, from a human to a mouse to a dolphin, has one. What is the neocortex doing? It's building a model of the world, of what we call sensory motor contingencies or sensory motor patterns: Why are you wearing glasses and what does that mean? Or: If I turn my head to the right, I have expectations about what I'm going to see. Most of what we learn about the world is how it behaves when we interact with it. The neocortex builds a model of what should happen in a particular context. A bigger neocortex lets you make a more complex model, and it lets you have more sensors. And that's what intelligence is: it's learning this model of the world.
And Grok uses a similar principle?
Here's what we do inside Grok: we build this 60,000-neuron neural network that emulates a very small part of one layer of the neocortex. It's about a thousandth the size of a mouse brain and a millionth the size of a human brain. So: not super-intelligent, but we're using the principle by which the brain does all the inference and motor behavior. I'm very confident that this sequence memory we use is the core of how all intelligence works. The brain's taking in streaming data, they're noisy, they're constantly changing, and it has to figure out what the patterns are and make predictions from them.
Is this different from other artificial-intelligence research that's going on these days?
I've been observing the AI and AI-neural-network fields for years, and I've always been a bit of a contrarian.
My view has been: let's figure out how the neocortex works, and once we understand those principles, that will be the path of building machine intelligence. Classic AI says: forget the neuro-science; it's a matter of programming and algorithms.
I have to ask, why would you want to build super-intelligent machines?
We can make the world more efficient, we can save energy, we can save resources, we can help detect diseases. When I ask myself, What's the purpose of life?, I think a lot of it is figuring out how the world works. These machines will help us do that. Many, many years from now, we'll be able to build machines that are super-physicists and super-mathematicians, and explore the universe. The idea that we could accelerate our accretion of knowledge is very exciting.
What might these artificial intelligences be like?
People today try to build walking, talking robots. And that probably will happen, but that's not where the excitement is. We're not very good at predicting where these things go, but I can say that the vast majority of machine intelligence will not be human-like at all. It won't be talking to us. It won't be evil. It will just be building lots of little models, or brains, trying to understand everything from vending machines to smart meters to windmills. Over time, you can imagine systems that model very complex things, like organization.
But what are all the people going to do once there are all these super-intelligent machines?
Take these models we're building with Grok. No human is going to be displaced by these things. No one is doing this -- it's impossible. Take the telephone system, where electronic switching replaced all those operators. If we had to have an operator place every telephone call in the world, there would be a billion telephone operators. Did we lose a billion jobs? Not really. We lost a few jobs, and advanced the quality of life. It's not some dystopian future where machines do everything and we sit around in lounge chairs.
Actually, that sounds pretty good to me. Can we talk a little bit about your past? I was pleased to learn that you came up with the Grid Pad.
The first tablet computer! And though we didn't make it a consumer product, that was my first hard idea.
At one of your talks, you had a throwaway line where you said that there was a bubble in "pen-based computing" from like 1989 to 1991. Really?
Well, Palm was successful. The bubble was the whole pen-computing world, companies like Go and EO and Slate -- not the Slate we know today -- Ink, Pen... Over a billion dollars -- 1992 dollars -- was invested in "pen-computing" and every one of those products failed. We were trying to start a mobile computing company and we kept saying, "We're not like those guys." In fact, my pitch when we were getting funding for Palm and I was actually being courted by VCs, I pointed to all these companies and I said, "See all these companies that just raised a lot of money, they're going to go out of business." And, I said "There's an opportunity, if you're willing to bear with it because mobile computing is going to be really, really big, but it's not the way they were thinking about it. It was hard, of course -- it didn't succeed right away -- but eventually, we had the Palm Pilot, which was a very successful product. Of course today, mobile is a big thing. I kind of knew that, back ten years ago, when I used to tell people, mobile is going to be big, everyone is going to have this [points to an iPhone]. I feel the same way now, in the sense that we're onto some big things in artificial intelligence, but it might take twenty years from now to be obvious.

While the “look-at-the-silly-millenials” genre tends to be a bit tiresome, the Wall Street Journal came up with a novel angle earlier this month: the TV antenna.
The antenna is mounting a quiet comeback, propelled by a generation that never knew life before cable television, and who primarily watch Netflix, Hulu and HBO via the Internet. Antenna sales in the U.S. are projected to rise 7% in 2017 to nearly 8 million units, according to the Consumer Technology Association, a trade group…
Since the dawn of television, the major networks have broadcast signals over the airwaves. It is free after buying an antenna, indoor or outdoor, and plugging it into your TV set. It still exists, though now most consumers have switched to cable television, which includes many more channels and costs upward of $100 a month.
The story is even more ironic when you consider the origins of cable TV. In the late 1940s, households that, due to geography, could not receive over-the-air television signals in their homes, banded together to erect “community antennas” on mountain tops or tall buildings, and then ran cables from said antennas to individual houses. In other words, cable TV originated as a means to get the free TV that was broadcast to everyone.
It turned out, though, that these “super antennas” could pick up not only local broadcast signals but also signals from stations hundreds of miles away; that meant that having cable access didn’t simply bring households to parity with customers using in-house antennas: cable TV was actually better. And while the FCC soon killed the ability of cable operators to offer those far-off channels, the idea of using cable access to offer additional differentiated content inspired Charles Dolan and Gerald Levin to launch the United States’ first pay-TV network in 1972; they called it the Home Box Office, now more commonly known by its acronym, HBO.
HBO pioneered the use of satellites to spread its content to all those community access cable networks; TBS, an Atlanta local television station owned by Ted Turner soon joined them, at first offering content for free, funded by advertising. Eventually, though, TBS and other channels, including the USA Network and an all-sports venture called ESPN, realized that the entrepreneurs investing in building out cable systems needed content to entice new subscribers in order to pay off their fixed costs: that meant the ability to charge fees on a per-subscriber basis — provided, of course, that the cable channel charging such fees actually had content that was worth paying for.
What made this transition easier is that cable operators were already charging customers for access; cable channels didn’t have to charge customers directly, and if their subscriber fees resulted in higher cable rates, well, that wasn’t their problem! Indeed, it wasn’t a problem for anyone: thanks to bundle economics everyone was happy. Cable operators charged more but justified increases with more and more cable channels; customers may have grumbled but increasingly found cable indispensable, thanks to cable networks doing exactly what they were incentivized to do: create or acquire content that was worth paying for.
Vertical Versus Horizontal
Perhaps the oldest theme on Stratechery is the importance of understanding the difference between vertical and horizontal companies; in May 2013 I wrote of Apple and Google:
Apple invests in software, apps, and services to the extent necessary to preserve the profit they gain from hardware. To serve another platform would be actively detrimental to their bottom line. Google, on the other hand, spreads their services to as many places as possible – every platform they serve increases their addressable market.
Vertical companies like Apple achieve profits by selling differentiated goods at high margins. Horizontal companies like Google, on the other hand, achieve profits through scale, which by extension means being free (or as low cost as possible) is more important than being the “best”; the brilliance of Google’s model, of course, is that having more users, and thus more data, means it is the best as well.
Indeed, that is the foundation of another major Stratechery theme: Aggregation Theory. Some companies, in markets with zero distribution costs and zero transactions costs (like search, for example), can leverage an initial user experience advantage into a virtuous cycle: new users attract new suppliers, which in turn increases the user experience, thus attracting even more users, in turn attracting more suppliers, until the aggregator has all the users and all the suppliers. Naturally, given that the payoff is, as I said, all the users, aggregators are horizontal companies.
Netflix: The Disruptive Aggregator
Netflix is an aggregator, perhaps my favorite example of all, in part because their industry — television — was in a far stronger position than the text-based industries aggregated by Google and Facebook. Making good content is hard, and expensive, and cable has always been a good deal; that Netflix has been as successful as it has is perhaps the most powerful example there is of how an initial user experience advantage can lead to a dominant position in an industry.
Netflix is also disruptive; while the term is overused, the formulation is actually quite simple: a new entrant leverages a technical innovation to serve customers with a business model incumbents cannot compete with, and over time moves up the value chain until those incumbents end up with a worse product that is more expensive to boot.
In the case of Netflix the innovation was streaming over the Internet: it was both a user experience breakthrough that gained the company customers, providing revenue with which the company could start to produce its own content, and also an enabler of a new business model — content everywhere. From a recent feature in Variety:
No media company today is expanding faster and is more talked about, admired, feared and debated than Netflix — which has upended the traditional models for television and inspired binge culture. “They totally made television global, and that was an unheard-of concept,” says Harvey Weinstein. “Whoever thought of buying universal rights to anything?” Depending on where you stand, Netflix is either saving Hollywood or wreaking havoc on an already unstable industry.
Netflix’s recent deal with longtime ABC Studios showrunner Shonda Rhimes draws that line quite nicely: for content creators Netflix’s rise has been a boon, not only financially but also creatively; for networks the streaming service is nothing but a threat, not just for talent but also viewer attention, and, inconveniently, a source of income at the same time.

Rhimes former employer, Disney, is a perfect example. Back in 2012 the media company signed a deal with Netflix to stream many of the media conglomerate’s most popular titles; CEO Bob Iger had crowed on an earnings call earlier that year:
We feel very, very good about opportunities in SVOD and on digital platforms, as we’ve seen and other large media companies have seen the opportunities to monetize owned IP are only growing not just because of new technology but globally. And I think you’ll continue to see growth in both revenue and growth in bottom line, in income, from output deals to these third party or new platform owners. An exciting time for intellectual property owners.
Iger’s excitement was straight out of the cable playbook: as long as Disney produced differentiated content, it could depend on distributors to do the hard work of getting customers to pay for it. That there was a new distributor in town with a new delivery method only mattered to Disney insomuch as it was another opportunity to monetize its content.
The problem now is obvious: Netflix wasn’t simply a customer for Disney’s content, the company was also a competitor for Disney’s far more important and lucrative customer — cable TV. And, over the next five years, as more and more cable TV customers either cut the cord or, more critically, never got cable in the first place, happy to let Netflix fulfill their TV needs, Disney was facing declines in a business it assumed would grow forever.
The company finally responded earlier this month: not only did Disney terminate its deal with Netflix, CEO Bob Iger announced plans for Disney’s own streaming service, populated not only with the company’s family-friendly library but also original shows. Make no mistake, this is a big deal, and strategically sound; Disney, though, faces an under-appreciated challenge in making this streaming service a success: its own fundamental nature as a company.
Disney’s Choice
One of the luxuries of monopoly is that a company doesn’t need to make the vertical/horizontal distinction I referenced earlier; Microsoft, for example, profited for years with a vertical-type business model — making money on device sales, via licensing — without ever developing an internal culture suited towards creating differentiation that customers would pay for. The presumption was they would have no choice, leaving the company free to focus on horizontal empire expansion.
That is a big reason why the company floundered when the rise of mobile reduced PCs to a minority position in the market; in an effort to preserve the business model former CEO Steve Ballmer attempted to build a devices business that Microsoft was fundamentally unsuited for. And, on the flipside, CEO Satya Nadella’s greatest achievement has been shifting the company towards non-Windows-dependent services that serve everyone, the sort of approach that Microsoft as a company is far better at.
Disney has the opposite problem: the company is really good at creating differentiated content — the absolute best in the business. The business model, though, has been a horizontal one. Thanks to the cable bundle the company has long since grown accustomed to getting a little bit of money from everyone, not a lot from the smaller number of folks who are willing to pay a premium for Disney’s differentiation.
The challenge for Disney is that as that old business erodes, the freedom to not choose between a vertical and horizontal model will erode as well:
Disney could pursue a vertical business model that would suit its differentiated approach; this would mean a streaming service that looks a lot like HBO. A relatively high price for a relatively small amount of content, and, by extension, an outsized dependence on the company’s ability to continually generate must-see TV.
Disney could pursue a horizontal business model that better aligns with the economics of video; video has high fixed costs which means the more customers over which to spread those costs the better. This, interestingly enough, would look much more like Netflix: ever more content with the goal of reaching ever more customers, and becoming an aggregator.
The worst approach would be to try and have it both ways: a streaming service that has limited differentiated content with horizontal audience and revenue assumptions; unfortunately for Disney this is exactly what Iger hinted at in his announcement:
While Iger didn’t announce pricing, he did say that “What we’re going to go for here is significant distribution because we believe one way to be successful in the long run is for both of these services to reach a maximum number of people.” That sounds like a horizontal approach!
At the same time, Disney might not even include all of its own content in the service. Iger said of Marvel and Star Wars, “We’ve also thought about including Marvel and Star Wars as part of the Disney-branded service, but there where we want to be mindful of the Star Wars fan and the Marvel fan and to what extent those fans are either overlapped with Disney fans or they’re completely basically separate or incremental to Disney fans.”
To be clear, both of these decisions are up in the air, but Iger’s comments are fundamentally at odds with each other: you reach everyone by having more content, not less, and by building a new sort of bundle (which is exactly what Netflix is doing). That means not only including Marvel and Star Wars but also content from non-Disney studios as well. Yes, that may seem antithetical to Disney, the only company that can rival Apple when it comes to fanatical control of how it is perceived by customers, but the company is rapidly losing the luxury of having cable companies do its dirty work.
On the other hand, if Disney insists on doing its own thing, limiting its service to its own differentiated content, it needs to charge the premium that such a strategy entails, and accept the smaller customer base that will result.
The Challenge of Culture
From my perspective the best approach is the horizontal one: content production is economically suited to a model predicated on maximum reach, and the Disney brand is uniquely capable of giving Netflix a run for its money when it comes to acquiring customers and building the streaming bundle of the future.
I wonder, though, if Disney, particularly under leadership that was so successful under the old model, is desperate enough to do what it takes to build a truly successful horizontal business. In some respects the challenge is even more difficult than Microsoft’s: in that case the company had to give up its business model to pursue a new opportunity that fit the fundamental nature of the company. I am suggesting Disney do the opposite: keep its business model — making money from everyone — while letting go of the need to control everything that is so inextricably tied up with the ability to create differentiation. It might be too much to ask.
