Take all the unaddressed angst from the Titans 2018 show and actually write it well and this is what you get.
This was so good!! I loved it. I love the detail of how Jason started considering trying to end it again because nobody would give him space a ton, because that is how it is in most cases with this kind of stuff, in the circumstances he’s put in. The characterisation was spot-on, those characters are messes and you captured it perfectly.
I have many feelings about this, but silence is golden so I’ll let them transpire through the screen.
All I will say is that I really hope you got a kick out of ripping my heart out, @disniq , because it might just be irreversible.

another update: I'm 66% of the way through Pantomime now and I've discovered the reason I can't get into it is the writing style. It's just very...basic. There's a setup of "events are talked about in one chapter, and in the next there's a flashback to them, except the flashback contributes very little to the story bc we already know what happened and how the MC feels about things" and the repetition is driving me mad.
I'm determined to finish it (hopefully today), and then maybe I'll read something else as a palate cleanser before starting book 2. I'm pretty sure Pantomime was the author's first book, so I'm gonna try and read the rest of the series and hope the writing improves! I'm enjoying the worldbuilding and characters, and I want to find out what happens, just want the writing to hold my attention a little better.

Hi I'm gonna use this figure arriving to have a vent about Soul Eater.
So I'm gonna be so real, my expectations for the franchise are rock bottom. Personally I am pretty critical of Ohkubo and my opinions of him are a dude who really cooked but in an almost Ratatouille esque manner. Idk how this man was revolutionary and created one of the first notable female lead Shonen or a canon non binary character that isn't a stereotype but he did. But like, since the end of the manga, the series has fumbled so hard.
I share a lot of shit on tiktok and people are particularly get hype about the fukuro I own, to which for some reason Shonen GanGan just went ham for a few years with custom computer mice and mp3 players. But often there's a comment like "I wish they made more stuff like this now!" And fully they're right but I'm so defeated with official shit. Said figure above is really the only good shit they've released since the early 2010s and otherwise it's been a constant game of trying to not spend dumb money on secondhand merch. And I've felt the need to take the helm in some more bigger SE fan creations (plush which will go a questioning distance). But really if I think of the most hype shit SE has received, it's all from fan merch; the headphone attachments and the black room oni backpack for instance. Around 2018 was the first major anniversary to come up and since then there's constant "Soul Eater Remake 🥺" and no shame but I just know to give up by now.
So what I mean is, rn we've had the shitty anime anniversary merch release and now the manga anniversary exhibit.....which I'm gonna be real is kinda shit. I know the vague elements used for these types of shows but I sat there like "Is this gonna be 3D recreations or cardboard cutouts?" Turns out both but more of the latter. I'm really kinda disappointed that from what I've seen it's just Shinigami-sama's mirror for recreation and then the rest is blown up manga panels and really subpar cutouts. Tbr I was hoping for the apartment or the school podium maybe. I know the later manga elements would not be on the table sadly. But man, not even weapon recreations or something?
And the other part I gotta be real about, what the fuck happened to Ohkubo's art? I mean last I saw, Fire Force was still quality. But there was the perfect editions and now the main visual for the exhibition and it's baaad. The line art and posing feel amateurish and lazy. It feels like he almost hates the series the way he draws it. I really supported Ohkubo's weirder pieces and even found him a huge influence at one point but the perfect editions are what got me into buying the originals.
Idk I literally have planned to go to Japan for the exhibition but I know it's gonna be so disappointing. This series post mortum is fully just disappointment. The most surprising thing of the exhibition merch was there being any form of plush although they look a little cheap. Either way I know I still want them, I'm just tired of knowing my fandom is obtusely dead. It's become a game of looking at good smile's releases and seeing what niche thing gets a nendo over soul eater. Do that and I promise the results are WILD.

PSYCHIATRIST: So how can I help you? ME: I don't know, I'm – what's the word – depressed? Do I have to go into detail? Baek Sehee is a successful young social media director at a publishing house when she begins seeing a psychiatrist about her - what to call it? - depression? She feels persistently low, anxious, endlessly self-doubting, but also highly judgmental of others. She hides her feelings well at work and with friends, performing the calmness her lifestyle demands. The effort is exhausting, overwhelming, and keeps her from forming deep relationships. This can't be normal. But if she's so hopeless, why can she always summon a yen for her favorite street food: the hot, spicy rice cake, tteokbokki? Is this just what life is like? Recording her dialogues with her psychiatrist over a twelve-week period, and expanding on each session with her own reflective micro-essays, Baek begins to disentangle the feedback loops, knee-jerk reactions, and harmful behaviors that keep her locked in a cycle of self-abuse. Part memoir, part self-help book, I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki is a book to keep close and to reach for in times of darkness. It will appeal to anyone who has ever felt alone or unjustified in their everyday despair.

Summer TBR
Given I wanted to spend the majority of my summer reading, in an attempt to recover from the tumultous spring semester and I wanted to be a bit more active on here I thought I'd keep track of my list on this post.
La Chute, Albert Camus
The Dispossessed, Urusla K. Le Guin
Finished 2 July. I really enjoyed this, it was quite an easy read but I mean that in the best way possible. It passed around a lot of interesting ideas in a way that is easily graspable and I liked the switch of perspectives between the planets/past and present.
Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov
Finished 7 July. I have had this on my shelf since 2018, and finally finished reading it. Subject matter aside, it was a surprisingly easy read as the language was surprisingly simple to comprehend and the pace, at times, rather high. It was revolting in the exact way I had anticipated and the book definitely lives up to its status as a classic.
Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami
Finished 5 July. I'm not the biggest fan of Murakami, but I enjoyed the mystery aspect of this book and the story unravelling slowly before my eyes.
The Gebroeders Kramazov, Fyodor Dostoevsky
Leadership, Henry Kissinger
Transgender Marxism, Gleeson & O'Rourke
De metamorfose van de wereld, Jurgen Österhammel
De Consultancy Industrie, Mazzucato & Collington
Finished 4 July. One of the most frustrating books I've read all year in the best way possible, that is, by exposing one of the fundamental structures that keeps out current world running in a clear and comprehensive way.
Additional books I've read
The Secret History, Donna Tartt
I reread this book about every year during the summer as it perfectly encapsulates my melancholy. Surprisingly, I found it particularly insightful this time around. Perhaps because I'm a little older, perhaps a bit more experienced, but I felt that for the first time I was able to fully see both stories unfolding (The great tragedy and the satire) and it made the book all the greater to read again

Hi, do you have some ff recommendations which are exclusive on Fanfiction.net and not crossposted on AO3?
my tbr-list is filled with AO3 stories but I'm sure there are some gems on FF.net too :)
Thanks!
On the one hand, I'm like: I came back at the perfect time to answer this question, because FFN got me into fanfiction. It's my first love. But on the other hand, I'm almost exclusively an AO3 reader now (FFN got too spammy).
Your best bet is to honestly just google something you're interested in and see if it's cross-posted. There was a big push a few years ago for authors to move or at least cross-post their fanfiction. And then there's a lot of fans who have moved older stuff over when it looks like the author is no longer active. So googling is the only way to tell.
But I'm happy to share my personal Dramione FFN favorites list, and I'm 100% sure some of our followers will post theirs in the comments.
-Shirlyn
The Request by redhead414 - M, 39 chapters - Astoria was never a fan of Hermione Granger, but pretty soon, she would be gone, and Draco was going to need all the help he could get. Rated M for future chapters.

When Ginny's daughter ends up in grave danger, Hermione sells herself to the Death Eaters to save her life. Draco/Hermione. Not fluffy.
Burbage High by Charlotte Bird - M, 27 chapters (abandoned) - 14 Years post war, Hermione has become Head of the progressive, yet failing Burbage High. Handling right wing politics is easy, but working out why Malfoy is insisting his son start there in September is not. 10 years spent in Azkaban and 2 years isolated in the muggle world may have changed Draco, but surely not that much? Is something more sinister going on?
Forget Me by Emara88 - M, 26 chapters - The war ended over two years ago, but Hermione still feels the echoes of strange memories from that time, as though something is missing or has been taken from her. Simply Irresistible by bookworm1993 - M, 30 chapters - Draco gave a cocky grin. "I am going to give you a makeover." "I'm sorry what?" "You heard me Granger, I'm going to give you a makeover that will make every man want you,and make Weasley die of regret. You will be simply irresistible."

Of Kings and Queens by galfoy - M, 26 chapters - Hermione has a bad habit. Draco has a big problem. The universe has one heck of a plan.
Little, Fragile Toys by Bex-chan - M, oneshot - "That incident, their first kiss, always reminded her of a car crash; people often described how they could recall every moment before and every moment after, but the impact itself was lost or hazy, like when you find a new bruise and can't remember where it came from. And Hermione could genuinely remember every detail that followed the impact. Every detail." Dramione. One-shot.
It's All Uncharted by redhead414 - M, 38 chapters - "Are you ready?" she asked. Draco brushed the back of his hand against her forehead before tracing it down her cheek. "I was ready the moment you came back into my life, Granger. Are you ready?" "With you," she whispered, "I'm ready for anything."

10 Books to Read in 2024
Thank you @lemonlyman-dotcom for the tag! At this point you must know that I go overboard with these posts. I appreciate the enabling. 😂
#1 & 2: Book Club/Buddy Reads
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coats - This is one of the official Paul Strickland Approved Reads and it's been on my shelf for awhile now too. It's about time I sit down and read it!
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden - This book was chosen by one of my friends for our seasonal book club to be read for winter.
#3 & 4: Series to Complete/Continue
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Light of Impossible Stars by Gareth L. Powell - This is the 3rd and final book in the Embers of War trilogy. I read the previous book back in 2020... so it's unclear if I will remember the plot enough for this. oops.
Saga Volume 9 by Fiona Staples & Brian K. Vaughan - I've had this volume on my shelf since 2018 when it was published but kept holding off on reading it because the authors had announced going on a break and I heard there was a cliffhanger. They've since come back and started releasing more volumes, so I gotta catch up!
#5 & 6: Series to Start
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin - Series are a big focus of my personal reading goals in 2024. I own the entire Broken Earth trilogy in physical copies, and they've been staring at me for awhile now and guilting me for buying a whole series without knowing if I like the first book.
Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee - I was smart enough with this one to at least purchase just the first book and not the entire Machineries of Empire series. However, I have owned this since 2018. Why haven't I read it yet???
#7 & 8: Indigenous Fiction
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko - I was in an online Indigenous Reading Book Club for a little bit and this was one of the books we were supposed to read for that. and I never did. Must fix my prior mistakes!
There There by Tommy Orange - I've heard great things about this book and Tommy Orange is releasing a second novel this year that I hear has ties to this one.
#9 & 10: Books that have been on my TBR for the longest
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - I've had this on my digital TBR since August of 2009... 2 0 0 9! WTF!
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut - This one has been on there since December of 2010. Not much better at all. What have I been doing all these years??
I'm not sure which of my mutuals are big book readers tbh. Hit me up and let me know if you are! I'd love to know who to tag for these kinds of things in the future! 📚💜

she would be king // wayétu moore
first published: 2018 read: 06 july 2024 - 16 july 2024 pages: 368 format: e-book
genres: fiction; historical fiction; fantasy (magical realism); african literature (liberia) favourite character(s): june dey and gbessa least favourite character(s): callum aragon
rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗 thoughts: gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. i can't believe i only very recently came across she would be king, but i'm very glad i wasted little time in getting around to reading it. in part motivated to make progress on my personal 'read around the world challenge', i thought a fantastical retelling of the foundation of liberia would be the perfect addition, and i have to say that i'm very much encouraged to further expand my knowledge of the country after having read this book.
as i say this was a fictional exploration of liberia's early years rooted in real history. through three main characters it explores the perspective of liberia's indigenous peoples, the freed american slaves who became settlers, and (to a lesser extent) the jamaicans who sought a better life back in africa. the first three chapters which cover these characters' backstories in depth were captivating and i was drawn in right away. from there we have a convergence of their lives, and then further exploration of the dynamics between new settlers and indigenous liberians. i was only vaguely aware of the history of the country, and so the discussion of how the freed men were repatriated there by the ANC, and how the americans saw themselves relative to the indigenous liberians, taught me something important.
at the same time as being informational for me, it was also engagingly written. it was so atmospheric that i felt transported to another place and time, and i could see it play out in my head like a movie. the element of magical realism elevated the story without causing it to lean into a tale of unimaginable fantasy.
i highly recommend this book (just keep an eye out for the trigger warnings beforehand). i've spotted that wayétu moore has a memoir about her life and particularly the escape of her and her family to america after the breakout of the first liberian civil war which is definitely going on my tbr!
