Frozen Ashes master list (Calendula Chronicles, Book 3)

The Code Veronica arc of the Calendula Chronicles.

Story synopsis: Albert Wesker molded his captive into the perfect, pliable bait for taking out Rockfort, and cracking open the Ashford family’s secrets. But who’s really in control, once chaos breaks out?

The stakes have never been higher for Marigold, but she may not be fast enough to save everyone.

Regarding Frozen Ashes and The Antarctica Incident (Q_Alias)

Frozen Ashes was written as the other side of Q_Alias' The Antarctica Incident. Marigold actively enters that story around chapter 23 27 (5-1 in their narrative), and moves out of it as an active participant at some point after chapter 30 35? (6-5 in their story) eventually. However, she's very active in the background of Q's narrative. We started to soft-merge our respective plots back in October 2022 plots, rather than a strict collaboration (like 1981). When I started writing, I set up a little timeline of events for reference, so I'll link when relevant events are happening at the same time in that story.

To return to this topic, and for a record for how the project is going.

I am down to the final story. Which being a Choose Your Own Adventure story for Frenchie is currently scoped out to be 96 chapters long. So it won't be fast. Also, when I realized that's what I wanted to do for the last story, it meant Frenchie's story went from 21 points to 34 points story to write. Also, I originally estimated that Zheng's story was about 13 points, but when I wrote it it turned out to be more of a 21 point story. i.e., roughly the same size as Izzy's story, and that's even before I go back and fix all the TBDs and add what folks are doing while talking.

Now I need to rescope the project to see if my original timeline is still reasonable.

That means, I take my handy chart where I track progress and change the points for Frenchie and Zheng's stories. The chart now looks like this for all the stories.

BTW: Having this many stories means I can bounce around each day, making progress somewhere on something.

Now, before I adjusted my points, the line chart showing what progress needed to happen looked like this with the goal being complete 621 points of story creation in 75 days (less the 176 I'd already done when I started tracking).

Sadly, this chart now out of date.

What I now do is (because I have no interest in figuring out what my actual 21 point progress has been writing Zheng's story, is do a bit of a reset today.

By the way, the way you build the chart above is by filling in a table that looks like the table below every day showing progress. I've set up confiditional formatting on the amounts in the Build column to go from dark pink if I complete 0-2 points, light pink if 3-4, light green if 5-7, and dark green if 8+. And thus I get a little visual reward for making my goals.

For everything up to yesterday, when I thought Zheng's story was going to be a lot shorter, I use the original build rate of 5.9 needed points a day for the Ideal Get Done column.

As of today to fill out column's B # I nee to get done, I take the new goal - yesterday's projected pts / # days left. i.e., (665-225)/33. This give me my new needed build rate of 7.25. I would say yikes. But I know it's actually fine, because my average build rate over the last week has been 8 points a day, not including today's wonky adjustment #. Plus, I have a little bit of slack given one week I did *a lot* of writing.

So it's reasonable for me to project that I can still finish writing this huge project within the projected time. Posting, that's a different beast. If my build rate were different, then I would know I can't possibly finish by the projected date, and would need to adjust something. Mostly likely extend my projected completion date, because I don't really have time to do more writing/editing each day.

Anyways, I adjust the # of points in row 43 to the new amount I've completed given Zheng's story is now worth more points. i.e., I didn't complete 16 points today, I'm just not bothering to figure out what my actual progress was over the last week and a half of writing.

This results in a new chart that looks like this. The uptick in both today's points and the bend in the Ideal Get Done is too slight to really see, but it's there.

Now on to... actually I'm going to take a break. On to the new points build tomorrow. If you've stumbled on this, hopefully this is a useful example in how to do this kind of project management planning.

For the Story is Long and Takes a Long Time

Every now and then I see a post float across my dash about younger folks (my lawn is a field of local plants and and drip watered, please enjoy) wanting an algorithm for AO3 or only wanting longer fic, or blah, blah. Not sure how much of that is pervasive and not folks grumping at the sky.

But this is the grumping at the sky site, so whatever.

Ever wondered what the labor involved in a long fic looks like? Wonder no longer, here's a line graph.

This represents the kind of sustained labor required to finish a maybe (I'm not done yet) 350k work.

It's not a single story. It's 18 stories from 18 POV that braid around similar (but not identical because people observe different things) events. It's OFMD modern AU.

Nothing is posted. I don't post unfinished stories. I learn too much while I write for that to ever work for me. Even if I have an outline.

Now you may wonder, how did I come up with graph? Probably not, but I'm going to explain anyway.

After working on and off on the project (the reason it doesn't start at zero) I decided to apply some techniques I use for project management. What I'm about to describe can be used for any type of complicated project.

Step 1

-Break the "project" down into milestones. 18 stories. I've also broken it down into 4 phases per story: 1) Write draft 1, 2) Edit, 3) Have you heard of 2nd edit? 4) Hopefully we're at Spag edit.

Step 2 -

Assign points to every milestone.

I use this sequence of #s*: 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34. Want to sound fancy. That's a Fibonacci Sequence. Now you know.

Using this numbering sequence keeps me from getting bogged down trying to decide if a big story is say 8 or 9 points if I were using a 1-10 sequence

The principle behind this kind of point assignment goes something like this. It's hard to look at Stede and know how tall he/the actor is. But if you look at Stede and Izzy standing together, I roughly know who is taller.

A - Or in this case, I guess the Stede story will be longer than Izzy's story. So Stede= 34, and Izzy=21.

B - Break down the phases of writing and assign them points.

3 Start writing. At the end of one week, figure out my points completed. Should be a % of the total possible points for that milestone/phase. My method involves a lot of formulas based on 20 years of project mangagement experience. You should just guess. Divide by 7. That's the "build" rate.

Divide the total number of points for the project by the build rate, that's the # of days it will probably take. That seem to long, establish an arbitrary date to finish and divide the number of points by that number of days and that's you're "Management Assigned an Arbitrary Date and I don't know if we can finish, but let's try" rate.

4 Keep writing and editing. Track as you go. Having a much smaller goal each day than "Finish it" to reach each day makes it easier to do. It's also easier than an arbitrary # of words a day, which, shrug, we're not Dickens. We're paid by the kudo, not the word.

Know how I know? I've been working on and off on this for 2 years. Here's what that (roughly) looks based on knowing how long I spent getting 4 of the stories thru writing and first edit by the time I got to March of this year. I file creation to last revision date, but not including the long periods in between writing, and knowing several times I had to remove huge amounts of writing. So, points went away. Sad sound.

After the timelines have broken free, Loki decides that all he wants is to join Thor in New Asgard. With a stolen tempad he travels to a timeline where the previous Loki died at the hands of Thanos. Now Loki helps his brother in rebuilding a home for the displaced people of Asgard while simultaneously learning to live a universe where it feels like this is the last place he should be. He wants nothing to do with the humans living nearby, but one in particular is not getting the message.

State of the Galaxy. [midnightspxce]

A quick State of the Galaxy post. Probably will be updated as these stories progress, but I’ve noticed while rereading I keep assuming people know things already from my shitposts and have gained telepathy but that’s not always the truth. Kind of my own ‘Canon Defiance’, because I take canon and yank it to how I like it. If you’d like to pull any head canons on timelines or ages of canon characters, feel free to. This was kind of a passion project of mine because once I get involved in something, I get involved.

I also am horrible at remembering ages. This is as much for you, the reader, as for me, the author.

If you don’t want to read this whole mess, here’s the timeline I reference a lot. I defy it all the time and twist and turn it into what I want, but anyways. Same thing with ages of companions here.

SHADOW OF THE SITH -

In this story, the first canon defiance you’ll notice is that in-between the beginning and end of the vanilla story is two years, instead of the widely accepted three. Well, for most characters. Then there’s another year to Assault on Tython/Korriban Incursion, or Chapters 1 + 2 of Shadow of the Sith (13 ATC). As mentioned in the book, there’s another two years in between then to Shadow of Revan, which is Chapters 3-12 (15 ATC). Ziost takes place months after that, currently Chapters 13-16 (to be updated). Just after Ziost comes the first chapter of Knights of the Fallen Empire. Five years passes (20 ATC), and then there is a two year period of the expansion there (22 ATC). Another year passes to Knights of the Eternal Throne (23 ATC) A year passes to the end of Nathema (24 ATC). Another two years passes to the end of Onslaught (26 ATC). This is all subject to change because I’m kind of horrible about sticking to a timeline (and with Onslaught so far in the future of the story nothing is set in stone), but it will be updated if I change my mind.

Now, I’ve deduced there are sixteen years in between the vanilla story and the end of Onslaught. Because of this, here are the ages of both OCs currently mentioned in the story and some canon characters. You can skip this if you don’t care.

All of these ages, beyond my OCs, are just speculation at the moment. Especially *Theron and Lana (I remember seeing someone assume she was fifty-ish and their reasoning made sense so if I find it again I’ll link it here), because their ages are all over the place through the fandom. Also did anyone notice that all the men are so damn old compared to where most PCs are head canoned as? Except for maybe the force blind classes, all the force users are assumed to be pretty young, like in the 18-25 range. Andronikos, Quinn, Iresso, I’m looking at ya’ll. And Zenith. He can’t be romanced in-game, but Bis was 18 in 10 ATC, and he’s assumed to be 30-40. If anyone intends to cancel me over this in the future, in my defense, I always headcanon my characters young. Not to put this all on Bioware -- but to put this all on Bioware.

SHAN -

Shan, while relatively new, is still probably one of the most solid timelines I’ve had thus far. There’s not too much canon defiance here, only that instead of two years like in Shadow of the Sith, Shan has three years for Lexulle’s class story (13 ATC). Then there’s a year to Shadow of Revan hits in 14 ATC. Lexulle has Malcom late 14 ATC, another two, nearly three years passes to early 17 ATC, which is where they are now at the beginning of Knights of the Fallen Empire. After that (22 ATC), Knights of the Fallen Empire, Knights of the Eternal Throne and the traitor arc take place over the course of about three years respectively (25 ATC). A year passes through Jedi Under Siege and Onslaught (26 ATC).

There are sixteen years in between the beginning of the game and Onslaught.

WHAT WE LOST IN THE FIRE -

This one. Is the bane of my existence at the moment. It’s a bit of a struggle because the main part of story, or at least the part that is a big part of the first arc takes place before the main story. Figuring that out while keeping mind of Andronikos and Mierrio’s ages was definitely a fun challenge. Andronikos and Mierrio had Corsha in 7 BTC, making him 20 and her 21. Skip forward nearly a decade to Shadow Of Revan/Ziost (16 ATC), which is actually on par with the SWTOR timeline. Kind of. Five years forward to her unfreezing in carbonite (21 ATC). After that it should follow the sort of official timeline, three years from then to the traitor arc (24 ATC).

There are fourteen years in between the beginning of the game and Onslaught.

*Bioware. Really. I know Corsha is aged down pretty far compared to my average quizzy (20-24), but even so he’s still so OLD compared any force sensitive class I personally head canon. I even aged him down six years compared to the guide I found and he’s still almost a decade older than her.

These are all just my own personal headcanons for the expansions, not at all to be taken as canon unless you’d like it for your own stories. I do not see how realistically they managed to to shove all of this into their arbitrary thirteen years between the vanilla story and the end of Onslaught but I choose to defy canon at the moment. I love the writers, I really do, but why are all my male love interests a decade+ older than my characters?

Dion bounced excitedly and ran off back towards where Neil was still talking at Smith to go and tackle his father’s legs. Smith takes the hit like the defensive dealer that he is and he can see the man’s gaze fully lock down onto his kid.

He gets his gear on as Matthew speaks with Wren to tell her that her brother was going to be playing Exy and he wanted her to watch.

He has cheesecake to earn.

Time for a questionnaire meme

Tagged by @fangmich and it’s been a while since I did one of these so…why not!

Also I was just starting to type up my answers to these last night when a crazy thunderstorm hit and the power went out for over four hours. :-( Then this morning the internet was still out for a couple of hours after I got up, more aftereffects of the storm no doubt. So I might be tempting fate by again attempting to answer these but here we go anyway!

LAST:

1. Drink: Durance’s tea blend, Magran’s Fire! (Yesterday it was Eder’s Sun God Cider and it would have also been Kana’s Rauatai Sweet Pie but I am almost out of that because it’s so good. I have a reorder of it coming today, if the tracking info is correct…) 2. Phone call: Frontier support to report my internet being out. :-( (Fortunately I got a very nice customer service lady who took care of everything more swiftly than expected, and hey, internet’s back now!) 3. Text message: to my mother telling her I might be visiting her today if the internet didn’t come back on… 4. Song you listened to: Technically the Pillars of Eternity soundtrack while playing the game yesterday, but if we’re not counting that…my local radio station does this thing they call Bluegrass Wednesday where they play I Saw the Light to wake us all up on Wednesday mornings and that was going on while I drove to the grocery store. This week they played two versions and asked callers to vote – David Crowder which they usually use, and the original Hank Williams Sr version. 5. Time you cried: Probably at church? I tear up a lot at certain songs. Although usually not when I’m one of the ones playing them, so it would be one of the Sundays that the youth group worship team led the songs instead of Team Pastor’s Family (i.e. my mom on piano, my sister on drums, me on flute, plus an organist and some singers unrelated to us, plus my dad, the pastor, usually singing also).

HAVE YOU:

Dated someone twice: I have not really dated someone once unless we count going steady in junior high and when you’re too young to actually go out somewhere with the boyfriend, I’m not counting it… 7. Kissed someone and regretted it: I’ve kissed no one, so, nope 8. Been cheated on: This is also beyond my experience 9. Lost someone special: Oh certainly. Two grandparents so far, and a few years ago a very dear friend who wasn’t a teacher, yet was a sort of teaching mentor to me in our state JCL (Latin club!). Here we are getting ready for the annual trip to JCL convention in a week (!!!) and it still hits me once in a while, when I see the state t-shirt from the last convention trip he was here for and so on. 10. Been depressed: I am fortunate to have not had to deal with clinical depression. Life has its ups and downs (getting diagnosed with diabetes five years ago was one of the lows for sure…) but I’ve never felt hopeless, stuck in a low that would never improve. Honestly my faith is a big part of this – God is my hope and comfort when life is overwhelming. 11. Gotten drunk and thrown up: Alcohol, like dating, is beyond my experience. This is what life is when you grow up as a pastor’s kid with a pretty much lawful good alignment in RL. :-D

12-14: PURPLE AND GOLD! Well, that’s JCL colors, anyway. Purple is one of my favorites, also dark green, and…for a third…well I think I have more handknit socks in the blue range than anything? I am very mardi gras here.

15. Made new friends: Sure! Mind you, I don’t tend to form deep friendships very often but I do form firendly acquaintances pretty easily. I’ve made friends on tumblr and with some Latin teachers I met at the conference I went to last month. 16. Fallen out of love: Not really sure I’ve ever really fallen in; see above re: dating. Crushes and falling out of crushes, certainly. 17. Laughed until you cried: I’m sure I have? Probably at family gatherings. I have goofy relatives. 18. Found out someone was talking about you: Hello, I teach high schoolers? They are always talking about me. I usually assume there’s a base level of complaining about grades or discipline going on (some of which the offended student makes sure I can hear, yay), but I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by people (a fellow teacher as well as friends of current students) in the past year telling me they’ve heard good things about my teaching. (Current students’ friends who said so are taking my class next year, I think…Yay!) 19. Met someone who changed you: Sure. E.g. I’ve grown a lot more confident from hanging out with my very outgoing (and bossy :-D) best friend (and fellow teacher until we both left that school within the last few years… 20. Found out who your friends are: I am not at all sure what this is asking. 21. Kissed someone on your Facebook list: Nope, see above re: dating

GENERAL:

22. How many of your Facebook friends do you know in real life: I don’t generally make or accept friend requests unless I already know the person. Some are just acquaintances through work or the network of Latin teachers, or former students who were on trips to JCL convention with our group, etc. so I don’t often see them in person, but there’s only a handful I haven’t actually met at some point. 23. Do you have any pets: Alas, no, the apartment complex doesn’t allow pets. I had a cat at my last place but she went to live with my parents and she’s more my Dad’s pet than mine now. 24. Do you want to change your name: In true Anne Shirley fashion? :-) I used to be less content with my name than I am now. Now, I’m like whatever. 25. What did you do for your last Birthday: Taught? Probably? Was it even a weekday? 26. What time did you wake up: Around 7 today, eager to see if the power had come back on (it had!) and also the internet (it hadn’t!) 27. What were you doing at midnight last night: Finally asleep by then, I think, after hours of waiting for power to come back on. 28. Name something you can’t wait for: Deadfire (Gotta agree with you on this one, @fangmich!) 29. When was the last time you saw your mom: On the way home from family trip to see Grandma on Monday 30. What do you like about yourself: I might actually sound pretty arrogant if I seriously started listing things. I’m just a “look on the bright side” sort of person and I like a lot of things about myself as an active choice. *shrug* Most of the things I’d list have to do with creativity – writing, knitting, fluting. 42. Piercings: None 43. Blood type: You know I should actually know this by now, huh? I know my most recent A1C (6.4, not bad for diabetic) but have no idea my blood type. 44. Nickname: Besides forms of my actual name? Well, students call me Magistra… (Latin for teacher) 45. Relationship status: Confirmed Old Maid :-) 46. Zodiac: Virgo 47. Pronouns: she/her (but actually I’m pretty fond of ipsa, and eadem gives me headaches as it does all Latin students…sorry sorry, I know this question is about gender but I see “pronouns” and I think of grammar and those chapters that throw all of the pronouns at the kids at once so we call it the Death By Pronouns unit...Look y’all, I’m female but also a grammarian. That’s right, my gender is Grammarian.) 48. Favorite TV Show: Don’t have an actual TV so I watch things on the Internet. Does Critical Role count? If not, I’ve also watched Doctor Who recently. 49. Tattoos: None 50. Right or left hand: Right 51. Surgery: Had a pilonidal cyst removed in my teens. 52. Hair dyed in different color: Never. I do not mess with my hair. The curls would take revenge. 53. Sport: Marching Band totally counts and apart from that I am the least sporty of humans. 55. Vacation: Would love to spend it in Italy more often (yay Latin teaching perks) if I can get enough students to go. Otherwise – JCL convention! And other school-related trips… 56. Pair of trainers: Skechers? Does that count?

MORE GENERAL:

57. Eating: Like right now? I…had a muffin and yogurt and strawberries for breakfast? Lunch is TBD. 58. Drinking: I am a water drinker (so I guess I don’t write poetry) but also, lots of tea! And recently I have started drinking coffee (gasp!) because Mom has been providing coffee & breakfast for our Sunday School class and I enjoyed the coffee that first Sunday so I guess she has corrupted me now. 59. I’m about to: Catch up on everything I missed (tumblr, the Deadfire Q&A, etc.) while the internet was out. 61. Waiting for: My Adagio tea order with the rest of my Pillars of Eternity tea samples and a reorder of Kana’s and Iselmyr’s delicious blends! 62. Want: A teaching salary that makes it more likely I could afford to actually retire someday? 63. Get married: Used to assume I would, but see above re: Confirmed Old Maid – I’m content with being single, these days. A potential spouse would have to be pretty awesome to outweigh how fond I’ve grown of my solitude. 64. Career: I’m content with classroom teaching, most of the time. Not really interested in administration. Doubtful I could make a living as a writer, especially with my insurance needs nowadays. In my first teaching job, I was certain I’d be there till I retired. Then they had budget cuts and I had to switch schools if I wanted (I did!) to keep teaching Latin. Second job was burnout waiting to happen – after five years I switched to my current school, and once again I could see myself retiring here. If, of course, my deadbeat pancreas and I can afford that.

WHICH IS BETTER:
