It’s that time of the tier! As always, here’s a bingo chart made up of the mechanics (and other various related raid shenanigans) that my guild fails ~ spectacularly ~ at.

Tower Ascendance - Part II

Sylaess felt rooted for a moment, staring at the lone wisp that stayed with her. She’d been so deep in thought, she’d missed the sounds. The signs. It had been quiet for too long. It felt like her heart had plummeted through her chest and into the floor, an impressive feat, considering the incessant hunger for power. For sustenance.
Such as it was to be undead.
“...We need to run. Don’t fall, don’t lag. Don’t stop to fight. Fucking run.”
Her voice was oddly calm. Flat.
Both swords were in her hands, but she didn’t move yet. Pulling on a quick set of runes, a rapidly modified spell that she wasn’t sure of--
It worked. It was fragile. But it worked. The spirits nearby fled before them in a wave, suddenly. She was pushing them. Well, it was more like suggesting a direction, but it worked nonetheless. Her skin felt tight across her skull, teeth clamped in concentration.
Still, that single wisp stayed.
The elf swore softly at it.
Argonas wasn’t in the habit of running from fights. His grip tensed, tightening around the handle of his hammer. As Sylaess, Sinafay, and the host of wisps all made haste down the stairway, Argonas held. What mattered was getting them out, after all. Self-preservation wasn’t his highest priority here.
“--Go, I will buy you the time you need, and meet you down there!” he instructed, once Sylaess and Sinafay were too far to intervene.
“Argonas--”
But it was too late. He already careened ahead of them in a show of protective light. Thankful he had that blessing, but now more concerned than ever at their chances of escape, Sylaess grit her teeth, slamming her blades into their sheaths hastily.
He charged up the stairs, hammer and shield at the ready-- that’s when he laid eyes on the Tarragrue. Impossibly massive, brimming with a blazing core and adorned with plated spikes. Its eyes pierced into Argonas’ soul, filling his mind with thoughts of dread and weighing his heart with despair! A creature of nightmare, through and through! It let out a booming bellow that shook the tower itself before lunging for Argonas!
But the Draenei was undeterred! The Light was with him! Luminescent wings sprouted forth from his back, as his hammer was charged in holy Light! The shimmering of a divine blessing glistened across his broad-shouldered form! He met the Tarragrue’s charge with his own, crying out final instructions to his beloved and friend!
“Follow the Light runes!”
*BAP!*
A streak of radiant gold and purple flew back down the hallway, cascading down the stairs like a tumbling boulder down a hillside. Argonas slammed into a wall, then skipped over the stairs’ railing, flopping like a ragdoll as he smacked into one side, then the other, of the open spiral staircase Until finally, he fell flat on his back at the very base of the stairs-- right in front of Sylaess and Sinafay. He should have died, were it not for the Light’s blessed protection of his mortal form.
Dazed, but unhurt, he quickly scrambled to his hooves, and cleared his throat.
“... I have decided that I should lead you to the exit. This way!”
“Honestly, I do not know what I expected,” Sinafay sighed, but then couldn’t help but crack a smile despite the situation, “Good to see you have not changed, My Love.”
She reached down to help him up… only to remember that she couldn’t even do that as her hands moved right through. They may as well have been on two different planes of existence.
“Quickly!” She urged, as the entire room seemed to shake under the behemoth’s steps.
“You fucking idiot, don’t stop to chat it up!”
“Whatever you do, don’t stop running. It knows we’re here now.”
The thin elf raced forward to haul on his shoulder. Pull the behemoth of a draenei into a run by sheer will alone if she had to. But she was unnaturally strong.
“This is not the time for heroics. Time to run like the little bitches this place made of us.”
Those onyx eyes glanced back sharply at the incoming absolute marker of death. Felt it again. That sudden grip of fear down to her core. Had she seen this thing before, then? She certainly had heard it.
Her breath caught on it. It was one of those premonition feelings that had a habit of coming back to bite later. That was not what she wanted right now.
Argonas had learned his lesson. He kept running, looking back only to ensure the others were keeping pace. He was moderately fast, for a Draenei weighed down in so much plate armor. Practice. His shield kept affixed to his back, hammer in his hand. The other hand reached out, causing the Lightrunes he’d left behind to emit a resonant glow. In such a dark and dismal place, the glowing runes weren’t hard at all to spot.
The Vindicator led the group further down the tower, each new twist in the corridor looking no different than the last anymore, save for the runes. They were helpful… while they lasted. Had they missed one? Taken a wrong turn? Argonas slowed for the sake of searching, before grunting in frustration. He then stopped. The trail had gone cold.
“Either they could not endure the dark magic of this place… or the corridors changed too much.” he reported, frowning. “We cannot go back the way I came in.”
As far as they ran, however, the sounds of the massive Tarragrue still echoed intensely from behind them. Argonas looked around, formulating a plan as quickly as he could. The room they had stopped in had several cages and chains, but little else. The left-side wall wasn’t constructed, but sheer stone that extended several meters up. But it looked as if it terminated at a certain point before the high half-cavernous ceiling-- a faint, ominous glow highlighting the gap.
It was something, at least.
“Stand back!”
He set for one of the nearby cages. A massive one, that could very easily contain him behind the dense, sturdy bars. A length of chain remained affixed to the base of it, coiled in a semi-neat pile beside it. He sheathed his hammer to his hip, and squatted down before the cage. He grunted, gripping the heavy cage tightly as he hefted it up off the ground. He swung it slowly, left. Then right. Then left again with more momentum. Right, and up slightly. Left, leveling out. Again and again as he swayed with the momentum.
The monster’s footsteps echoed louder and louder, drowned out only by its angered roars.
Argonas kept focused. The momentum built with each swing, until he finally brought the cage fully around himself. Once, twice, three times, spiraling in almost a dance with one hoof rounding about the other.
Then released! The cage flew up in a steep arc, sailing up the height of the stone wall. It smashed through the gap, lingering a moment as it teetered… then grinding against the stone as it slipped behind it. A brief moment of silence, then a thunderous crash reverberating through the floor beneath them. The chain, of course, followed, now dangling straight up the wall.
“Climb! Quickly!” Argonas ordered, taking a brief moment to catch his breath after the exertion.
A very brief moment-- the Tarragrue had begun descending the winding stairs that led to their chamber!
Syl turned her back on the chain for a moment, squaring off with a small crowd of spirits and fragments that followed after her like a lost bit of cloud. She bared her teeth slightly, looking for one. That one.
Sinafay had no issues climbing up the chain. Her ethereal form was as light as could be with no mortal form to weigh her down. She made it to the top long before the other two, only to freeze as she saw what lay next.
“I swear on my undying breath if you do, I’ll--”
A wisp burst past her, following Sinafay up the chain almost amicably. Sylaess’ teeth clenched so hard it was audible. It wasn’t clear if she was angry or simply upset at this point, but it sure stirred up the party she collected. Those black eyes turned on Argonas.
“Up. Now. Please.”
Another chain, much thicker than the one they’d climbed, attached to the wall she stood on and led upwards to a cavern entrance. Below was nothing but hot lava. Even as a spirit, she could feel the heat rising from it, and was more than aware that it would burn her just as badly as any mortal.
“I desperately hope the two of you are good at balancing,” she called over her shoulder.
A small hop down and she landed at the base of the chain. Keeping her determined gaze focused on the mouth of the cavern, she began taking careful steps towards her goal. One hoof at a time.
"--Light help me…" the Vindicator muttered under his laboured breath.
Running, heaving, climbing, all had worn him out to no small degree. And now a chain bridge suspended over a lake of lava was their only way forward? The heat was sweltering; already he could feel his armor starting to conduct the heat. He couldn't endure it for too long.
Hastily, muttering, he began to strip off his plate. Shoulders, gauntlets, chestpiece… grace and leg plates too. It pained him to abandon his Vindicator's plate, but it had to be done. He stripped it all, down to his cloth pants and a few leather straps on his arms. Chest bare, runic scars glistening from perspiration.
Unceremoniously, he left the lot of them in a heap atop the wall, before venturing out towards the chain bridge.
With no actual memory to tie the fear to, it was easier to digest as unfounded. Push aside.
Sylaess hauled herself up the chain with a lot more ease than she had anticipated. Maybe it was the pressing threat of the Tarragrue, maybe it was the hint of hope at escape. Either way, she didn’t really dawdle when her feet slipped once.
Up over the edge, she had to blink and ... wait, what?
Argonas dropping his armor was not what she’d have put a bet on for sights to see on the wall. Gods. Sinafay had stopped halfway up the chain to look over her shoulder at the other two. To her, Argonas stripping down was a treat, and her tail swayed a bit wider as she couldn’t help but take it all in. He’s certainly been working out more since Argus… and her first time actually -seeing- the Fel scars from their torture at the hands of the Sagerei. Sylaess, on the other hand, blinked, looking away for a moment. Then the realization hit her. Lava. Fire. They were considerably high up, too; as if it weren't a harrowing enough situation.
Oh, are you fucking kidding me?
Argonas swallowed hard, taking a wary step out onto the broadside of the giant chain links. One hoof, then the other, doing his best to keep his eyes on the other side. His goal. His--
His misstep.
His hoof scraped the metal link as it slid off to the side of it. His balance lost, he toppled. Quickly as he could, he gripped onto the upright link beside him to keep from falling over, but only managed to hook an arm over it. He gasped, the heat making him sweat. His sweat compromising his grip…
"We are most assuredly talking about this later!" Argonas blurted out, scowling.
Sylaess’ hand brushed over one of the hilts jutting above her shoulders lightly, almost lovingly, in distraction. Her runes again glimmering to a dull roar. Icy wind rushed down around her and fled, leaving her glittering in tiny crystals. Sporadic, sure, and melting. But they helped negate the oppressive heat. Breath in. Sigh out.
“Okay.” Another exhale, slowly. She drew the rune in the air at her side.
The wisps and spirits recoiled--but were yanked in a moment. Some of them disappeared.
The elf became ever-so-faintly translucent. Hazy, even. Something about it didn’t work right. She stepped onto the chain, light as air. Stalked her way up to Argonas and reached down to draw him back up with unnatural strength. “Don’t ask, just go. And don’t you dare zap me right now.”
She breathed the words, drawing the second rune. Drawing him into the shell of the spell. wraith-walking was a little awkward when you were already in the Shadowlands. What realm were they side-stepping into? Who the fuck knew! But it was better than a hot dip.
As much as he appreciated the assist, this coercion-- and possible sacrifice?-- of souls expended in order to phase him into a more spiritual state was NOT something he was okay with! It stood against everything he had cone here for; to save souls, not cause them further anguish. Or worse.
Survival, however, took the forefront of his mind. His instincts. Escaping was paramount. Getting them all free of this accursed place was a mission of such importance that, while he wouldn't admit aloud, allotted for no small degree of concession of his morals and principles. Acting now. Justifying or reconciling later.
Syl merely affected a grunt in response. Not looking forward to that conversation.
Behind the wall, the Terragrue roared, once more filling their senses with fear, even knowing it could no longer reach them.
“Keep going!” Sinafay encouraged, having managed to complete her trek and reach the mouth of the cave, “Do not look back!”
Being phased into a spiritual state was mildly disorienting. The Vindicator’s body felt lighter, yet somehow it dragged as if he was pulling it through water behind him. It served its purpose though, keeping light helped keep him balanced. He crossed the chain along with Sylaess and Sinafay without any further trouble.
"I did not come from this way… I am unsure where to go from here." he stated his disclaimer. "But now we are safe from that thing."
The Tarragrue roared, as if in response to his statement.
"... for the moment."
“I can ask in a few minutes, but I suggest we find a way down. That’s all we can do.”
The phase shift of wraith-walking left her and she sagged a bit harder than she thought she would. Blinked dumbly. ‘Oh for the sake of being undead, you’re dropping the ball hard, Syl. Some undead strength,’ she mocked herself viciously. ‘You even sure this is real?’
Her legs jellied as she lumbered forward a step or two. She reached out for the cave wall and promptly fell over. Graceless as before. Maybe she had been using too much, drawing too much power from a dry well. Maybe she was just damaged. Then again, withdrawal was a hell of a ride.
It was an odd sensation watching the world’s axis shift from horizontal to vertical. A resigned sort of acknowledgement somewhere far from personal came to her. Thoughts drifted away in a fog as she had another seizure. The tremors stiffening her body to the point of joints creaking alarmingly and armor scraping the stone in a high-pitched whine. Her jaw was clenched hard enough to make a cracking noise.
The wisp settled on her temple, flaring slightly. At one moment, you could swear you could see the vague outline of a face in it, but it wasn’t strong enough for that.

New WoW post on Kor'kron 501st! Second Sylvanas kill and 3/10 mythic
This week we got our second Sylvanas kill, which got most of our group Ahead of the Curve, including Moogle! And this time, unlike my first kill, we actually got a group screenshot! We also did mythic Tarragrue, Eye of the Jailer, and the Nine. These mythic bosses are so much easier than heroic Sylvanas. Is it always like that? I doubt we’re going to push mythic much more, but it was fun to get…

FINALLY
LAYER SEVEN SOLO COMPLETE
I think I successfully captured the visual representation of an anticipatory whimper here. Not only does this boss have the same model as the Tarragrue except that he’s on fire, this was the SECOND TIME he’d appeared in my run. They used him as a warning on floor twelve, and he bitchslap one-shotted me on that floor.
I was down to one life, I had 83 powers, I had successfully bought out every single thing the broker could sell me and he did not have any extra lives to sell me, and I was scared
And then
That frostbite power was not nearly as helpful as you’d think it would be, since it halves an enemy’s HP for four seconds, and even with double damage from Convoke, 75% damage after I came out of prowl, and a billion other things, I still almost died a few different times. That was a terrifying dance and I have NO IDEA how long layer 8′s gonna take me

Shadowlands livestream
This isn’t a comprehensive liveblog, but I’ll be editing it as I watch with whatever tidbits I find interesting.
Beta next week, y’all!
Cut for length and gameplay (not story) spoilers.
Stats from the three months of alpha: 817,508 quests completed, 2,124 people completed the new Exile’s Reach starting zone, 62,777 runs of Torghast (11,218 of which ended with the Tarragrue killing them), and 64,440 in-game bug reports.
Covenants remain central to the gameplay. Only the tip of the iceberg was in alpha, and there’s a ton more content to come for endgame. Venthir will be the first one playable in beta.
Soulbinds are a big thing, having a mini talent tree linked to an NPC character. Conduits are like sockets and let you customize class abilities, while the talent tree part is the same regardless of your class.
Straight up rep grinding with covenants won’t be a thing. You’ll gain “Renown” as you progress, and as the meter fills you unlock new features/benefits/etc. It’s not open-ended like AP, and there are catch-up mechanisms built in from the start. (Good idea.)
Covenant Sanctums can be upgraded similarly to the class halls from Legion. They’re messed up by all the stuff breaking in the afterlife, and we’ll be helping to restore them. You’ll have bonuses (such as a teleport network) if you’re in the zone for your covenant, since that’s where your power is strongest.
Anima conductor: pick an area to restore, change the map as you heal the land, gain extra events and benefits.
We still have a mission board (oh joy) because they like the way they can put little bits of story in there (people read missions?) and it allows for progression to happen when you’re offline, but they say it’s evolved into “adventures.” It’s not just a simple matching game to counter abilities with specific followers anymore, but will be more dynamic, like combat is in-game. Mobile app will be updated to accommodate it (surprise.)
Each covenant also has a unique feature: Venthyr have the Ember Court where they throw fancy parties to mingle and show off their power/influences. You’ll figure out who to invite, fight off party-crashers, and figure out what features to activate to make the guests happy (and happy guests will give you rewards at the end.) It’s flavor to flesh out the culture.
Kyrians have the Path of Ascension. Inhabit the bodies of your soulbinds and do combat tasks. Loosely inspired by the Shar’tul (sp?) event in Blade’s Edge in TBC.
Necrolords have the Abomination Factory where you can practice necromancy(!!!) It’s like build-a-bear but with undead constructs, I guess. LOL Souls will need physical forms, and it’s up to you to construct one for them.
Night Fae have the Queen’s Conservatory where powerful souls germinate before being reborn--i.e. it’s a soul garden, in the same vein as the Pandaria farm.
The next dungeon to be tested is a max-level one called Theater of Pain. It’s an arena event as the greatest champions of Maldraxxus face off to see who’s the biggest badass. It’s a nonlinear dungeon as you pick which subfactions to fight in what order.
Return to the Maw: sounds similar to how Tanaan was used in WoD, where you go through the area in the starting experience, then return at max level to properly deal with the things there. Venari is the only character in the Maw who (at last overtly) doesn’t want to kill us, and she’ll give us directions, tips, etc. in her cave.
It’s a sandbox zone similar to the Timeless Isle: loosely structured, broad objectives, discoverable content. Everything in the Maw rejects you and knows you don’t belong there. There are no inns or friendly NPCs. The Jailer is watching and if you cause too much of a ruckus he sends a hit squad after you and you have to escape before they find you. “Desolate but awe-inspiring in a terrible way” is how Ion described it.
Castle Nathria testing is coming, with separate testing for each difficulty. Top guilds will be invited to test Mythic. They also want to get Mythic+ testing started as soon as possible.
Legendary Runecrafting: the response to the RNG-dependent, frustrating system of legendaries in Legion. You have a ton of agency and control over which legendary you get when by dealing with the Runesmith who is imprisoned in Torghast. He’s the guy who made the Lich King’s armor. He’ll make you legendaries (assuming you collect a bunch of materials). Some of their powers are inspired by favorites from the past.
Covenant campaigns are the equivalent of the war campaigns in BFA, but they’re tied to Covenants and not Horde/Alliance faction. That’s where the major story beats will tie in.
They’ll be enabling character copies to beta soon, so you can test the whole shebang from end to end, just as you would when playing the expansion for real.
Tuning is still very much in progress so some abilities are going to be over- or under-powered, and they know it. They want to figure out if things work conceptually and fun-wise first, and then adjust the numbers to balance things.
No release date, just “later this year.” Poo.
And it’s over just in time for me to run to work! BYE!!!!

WoW Shadowlands Patch 9.1: All information about Chains of Domination
The Murloc is out of the bag: At Blizzcon 2021, Blizzard announced the first major content patch for World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. Patch 9.1 is titled Chains of Domination and continues the story of the Shadowlands.
We have compiled all the information for you about the new patch 9.1 in advance.
What comes with patch 9.1
Before we go into detail, here is an overview of all new content and features that will come to the Shadowlands with Patch 9.1:
· New wing and adjustments for Torghast
· Start of Season 2 for Mythic + and PvP
· New levels of fame
· 10 Player Raid : Sanctum of Dominion
· Mythical mega-dungeon : Tazavesh, the veiled market
· Flying in the Shadowlands
· New cosmetic pact armor
· New story campaign : The pacts strike back
· New area in the gullet : Korthia
· New skills for the soul bond
· New mounts and pets
When will patch 9.1 be released?
Blizzard has not yet been able to give us an exact date. Patch 9.0.5 is currently still on the test server and will probably make it to the live server in a few weeks. Only then can Patch 9.1 be applied to the PTR. We suspect that a release of Patch 9.1 from April is conceivable.
Story: United against the jailer
After you've made the pacts stronger through your heroic deeds and joined one of the four factions, it's time to form an alliance. Together all the pacts go down the throat to find the jailer.
But first you have to find out what his plan is. The jailer himself has of course not been idle either, so that he will oppose you newly won subordinates and slaves. What we already know: He's looking for something special in the ruins of the mysterious city of Korthia.
We don't yet know exactly what that is, but Hazzikostas told in an interview that we will find out in the course of the update what the jailer is really up to.
The story for all four pacts is largely similar or evens the same thanks to the merger. However, there should be some pact-specific sections again, so that it is worth replaying the story with another pact. In the course of the story you will not only go to Korthia and thus into the gullet, but you will also have to visit some well-known places again.
New area: Korthia, City of Secrets
The city itself was once a place of the godlike first ones and bears the title "City of Secrets". Now it's just an abandoned ruin. In search of a way to fulfill his dark plans, the jailer throws this ruin into the throat to look for an answer to his problem.
Of course, neither the pacts nor you miss the chance and also pay a visit with Patch 9.1 to the city, which provides you with new quests and other activities.
This is where our friend Ve'Nari comes in again, who, according to Ely Cannon, plays an important role in the new area. After all, it has taken a rather neutral position so far and provides you with information about the gullet and its ruler. In Chains of Domination we should learn more about her and her position within the broker group.
There will also be new rewards in the Maw in the form of two mounts and two pets that you can collect. We can also use all of our mounts in the Maw from patch 9.1. But supposedly we can't fly in the gullet.
Raid: Sanctum of Dominion
After we were able to explore Nathria Castle to the last corner and Count Denathrius is already all green and blue from the beating orgies, a new raid with ten bosses finally comes with patch 9.1.
The Sanctum of Domination is the center of the power that the jailer has over the throat. It is located in Torghast, the Tower of the Damned, which you already know from your weekly soul ash collection campaigns. Instead of a single corridor, however, you are now exploring a whole sanctum and can finally take revenge on Tarragrue, who otherwise always chases you through the corridors when you have died too often.
We will also meet the banshee queen Sylvannas Windrunner in the sanctum. Apparently she will become the final boss of the raid. We should also be able to meet and fight the Lich Kel'thuzad in the raid. Nekrolord members had already dealt with the old acquaintance in their pact campaign.
As usual, the raid will not open right at the start of patch 9.1, but only about a week later. It will probably be the case again that the mythical level of difficulty, as well as the entry via dungeon finder, will only be handed in bit by bit.
Mega dungeon: Tazavesh
You already know mega dungeons from previous WoW expansions such as Mechagon in Battle for Azeroth. These instances can only be played on mythical difficulty level at the beginning and play a bit like a five-player raid. They are larger than the classic instance (hence the term "mega") and usually accommodate a few bosses with exciting and nasty mechanics.
There will be a total of eight bosses in the mega-dungeon who want to get your hands on you. As already said, the dungeon is initially only playable on the mythical level of difficulty. Traditionally, the next big patch - 9.2 - will be expanded to include the levels of difficulty heroic, normal and mythical-plus.
While the first area of the mega-dungeon includes the intermediary bazaar, in which we will fight against various intermediary cartels, the second area is structured like a heist, in which we have to get back an important artifact. On your raid you fight against all kinds of different opponents. Among other things, a dragon in a pirate costume wants to make a fire under your bum:
Again there are different pets and a mount, as well as different weapons to get hold of.
Flying in WoW Shadowlands
We already knew that the reputation grind would be gone. We didn't expect that to unlock flies in WoW Shadowlands you just need the conclusion of the story campaign.
Torghast: New wing and less frustration
The Tower of the Damned is also being redesigned. With patch 9.1 there should not only be a new wing with new opponents, the previous experience in the tower should also change and be less frustrating. The current situation is that you can either manage a wing at a certain level and receive soul ash and runic mason memories as a reward, or fail and start another attempt with empty hands.
With Chains of Domination there will no longer be a hard death limit, as is currently the case. Rather, your reward scales with how well you finish you’re run in Torghast. So you get better loot if you make a perfect run and don't die a single time than if you die twenty times.
And to top it all off: If you unlock flies in the Shadowlands, you will even receive a new flight mount, or rather four new flight mounts, as a reward, because each pact gets its own flying mount.

Painsmith Raznal - dwelling in the chamber interspersed with deadly floor spikes, the Painsmith is an enemy to reckon with.
Guardian of the First Ones - linked to the Energy Cores, the mighty Guardian poses a true challenge until you find out its weak spot and get some powerful allies at your side.
Fatescribe Roh-Kalo - bound to the Jailer's will, a formerly trusted fatescribe of Korthia, Roh-Kalo must now be stopped in his ill intentions of forging a new fate of Shadowlands.
Kel'Thuzad - guarding the unlimited well, Kel'Thuzad is a protector of the soul stream that gives the lich its power.
Sylvanas Windrunner - the final boss is the mighty and dreadful Banshee Queen and you will have to fight her to determine the future fate of the whole of Shadowlands (this is where you can certainly use some professional carry assistance).

in case you’re wondering how twisting corridors level 7 is going
I’ve now made f...ive? attempts and have either been so sleep-deprived that I screwed myself by, for example, walking out of a safe floor without talking to the broker, or gotten the living piss-shit kicked out of me around floor 12-15.
the most recent attempt was floor 14 and the tarragrue pursued me across more than half the level which I was willing to forsake because holy shit my power lottery was amazing and I thought I had a legitimate shot because I managed to honest to god sneak past him in stealth and engage the floor boss. I killed the boss, just in time to see the tarragrue suddenly right behind me and as the anima cell formed and it asked me if I really wanted to leave the level, the tarragrue caved in my skull
I am frustrate
