Underwater: a Jae Won rambling
There’s a scene in the trailer in which Jae Won says he’s tired of wearing a mask while being with other people.
Tumblr media
As @heesulovebot pointed out in another post, we seldom see Jae Won without it. The only time we saw him without it was when Ji Hyun came to see him after noticing that he had left in a hurry to smoke. In that scene, Jae Won avoids looking directly at Ji Hyun and it’s only when he’s about to leave that he finally meets his eyes. He only does so because Ji Hyun stood in front of him and made him look at him. Ji Hyun’s decision to tell his name right this instant is a way to tell Jae Won that he genuinely wants to get to know him no matter which side of him he decides to present himself with, no matter if he stays true or lie to himself. By telling his name, Ji Hyun strived to keep Jae Won grounded because he noticed how weary he was.
Jae Won uses gentle touches to keep Ji Hyun grounded and to make sure he feels at ease, whereas Ji Hyun’s way of caring feels very much like him: he gives his full attention. Ji Hyun’s eyes speak volumes and he has this very steady gaze when looking at Jae Won which seems to anchor him when his thoughts are overwhelming.
Jae Won’s mask is highly emphasised by the use of shallow focus. Soon after the opening scene, Jae Won is seen from behind but the camera keeps the fish tank in focus instead of him. In the same vein, in the beginning of episode 2, Jae Won is not out-of-focus but he is seen from behind the fish tank.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The use of out-of-focus shots implies how Jae Won is someone hard to grasp. Again, as @heesulovebot accurately pointed out, he goes with the flow and to do so he doesn’t need to be himself. The camera doesn’t show us a clear image of his face because we, as viewers, have yet to see it. The fact that the first images we see of him are from behind is also quite relevant and in keeping with the fact that he rarely shows his true self.
The fish tank is also an object I wanted to comment on. In episode 1, when Jae Won and his “friends” are arguing, the music and the background noises fade out and nothing can be heard except for their own voices. It’s only when Jae Won is pushed onto the ground by Tae Hyung that the music comes back again along with the familiar background noises of a restaurant during an evening shift. The abrupt interruption of the music playing is reminiscent of when you’re under water and that all noise is muffled. That’s exactly how Jae Won feels. Whenever people envy him, tell him how “worry-free” he is, he starts dissociating in an effort to control his feelings. By doing so, he forces himself to brush off these words which he knows are not true. But these misconceptions still hurt. They hurt him but he cannot say anything back because he is aware of the image he has created for himself. He didn’t choose to create this image for himself but people kept on assuming the kind of person he was (because of his family situation, his physical appearance, his rigour etc.) and so he eventually let his true self hide behind this shallow mask so he could appear and act exactly like how people saw him. People just didn’t see him, no matter what he did.
Jae Won is stuck underwater: his true self is almost impossible to grasp for it is as changing as the shimmer of the light on the water.
Looking at him through the fish tank is like seeing a distorted image (version) of himself. The directors precisely chose this angle to highlight the fact that Jae Won does wear a mask whenever he is surrounded with other people. The scene in which Ji Hyun tells him his name is all the more touching because at that moment, his mask was cracking and through the cracks his pain and emptiness could be seen. He would have never allowed himself to look so vulnerable if Ji Hyun had been someone else. But no one was there except for Ji Hyun. That freshman he knows nothing about but around whom he feels strangely at ease.

5 Songs Tag - QL Shows Edition
Tagged by @lurkingshan who seems content to torture me in to picking favorites.
Rules of the Game:
When you get this, list 5 songs from the Asian QL shows that you actually listen to.
🎶They do not have to be custom-made for the series. 🎶Non-western tracks only. Let's support Asian music and languages! 🎶Feel free to tag anyone who may be interested in participating.
🎶Add #5qls tag to your post for others to find the new favourites!
Unfortunately for everyone, I'm not the best person to do this challenge, as I think 3/5 of the songs I tend to listen to on repeat are My School President songs and that feels uninspired and unoriginal, so I'm only going to pick one of them and figure the rest out.
เพลงรัก (Hook) by Gemini Norawit- My School President
There is just something about this song that itches part of my brain. I get hung up on it, like I would have to listen to it about four times in a row before I could listen to anything else. It's so fun, and I love that there are so many plays on other songs in the lyrics. Hands down my favorite My School President song and definitely the Asian QL song I have listened to the most.
เพียงไว้ใจ (Free Fall) by Slot Machine - KinnPorsche
This song is the other Asian QL show song that I love, honestly I think this one is fully my favorite to listen to, I just have Hook first because I listen to it more often. But let me tell you, blasting this song in my car and headbanging to it before or after I drive somewhere is SO. MUCH. FUN. I have 300% headbanged to this song as a form of stress relief and would highly recommend others try it.
遠い国 (Tooikuni) by Daiki Ueno- Our Dining Table
It's just so sweet, I like the melody and also Our Dining Table is one of my favorite shows, so it is nice to have this song as a reminder.
너와 나 우리 (You N Me N Us) by Wetter - The Eighth Sense
Honestly, the entire soundtrack for The Eighth Sense is a bop. They do very successfully create the surfer vibes with their soundtrack.
รักคุณยิ่งกว่าใคร (Ruk Koon Ying Gwah Krai) by NuNew [originated by Got Jakraphan] - Cutie Pie 2 You
youtube
Thanks to @recentadultburnout I have learned that this song is a type of Thai country music called phleng luk thung (เพลงลูกทุ่ง). When I heard this song for the first time, I was struck with the realization that I might never have heard a song of this type or style before and I thought it was so interesting and fun. I love the runs that NuNew does in this song, and honestly I might try to seek out other phleng luk thung songs just to see if this is a style I enjoy. Because I certainly loved this song.

finished watching all the mk games' story modes and characters' arcade prologues and endings.
astounding how even with the phenomenal production value, sheer artistry on display, and more or less good script writing, the nrs era games were such a bore to get through. maybe mk9 is the exception as that one had a tighter story with an ending that capped off on what the opening showed.
still, it feels like mk has lost that charming experimental feel it had in the midway era. even with the mixed results those games had, they never felt identical to each other. each one offered something that the others didn't have.
it feels like the nrs era, following the success of mk9, just stuck with that formula for the story presentation and over time exacerbated its flaws.
seriously, at point i was just skipping gameplay sections just to get the cutscenes (and tbh those cutscenes got WAYYY too long) and when that happens, when a viewer/gamer doesn't feel immersed enough to engage with the game as a game, then there's something seriously wrong in the formula.
not that it's all bad, there's a reason these games became so beloved by the casual audience.
mk9 was good for the most part, even if it had many unnecessary fights, weird power scaling, and the antagonists being all losers in these fights (I'm still not over stryker's chapter like damn why did they have him beat reptile, mileena, kintaro AND ermac back to back that's ridiculous if they wanted to introduce him like "you have much potential" like nightwolf says maybe just have him beat one of them. now I can't even take them seriously).
mkx did a good job with the introduction of so many new characters, even if I couldn't bring myself to care about any of them. it also reduces the feel of some fights feeling unnecessary or over misunderstandings that mk9 had. unfortunately, this game negated the whole point of having a reboot in the first place, placing us right back in messy, consulted storylines and too many characters and subplots that the overall story loses focus. i still think the lin kuei mission/test was the perfect set up to introduce frost to the kombat kids team as she would bring an interesting dynamic to the team.
mk11 is where it hits rock bottom for me, not only is the story too long and slow-paced, especially with the addition of aftermath. it's just... it's nothing. i struggle to think of any positives besides the amazing visuals and character designs. this is where the series become too concerned with making a movie-like experience rather than a video game one so that might also influence my feelings on it. the handling of characters like scorpion's death and sindel's retcon left me feeling too bitter to appreciate their subplots. even noob saibot's appearance didn't excite me as much as I would have thought :\
mk1/mk12 was much more entertaining than 11, it had the tall order of introducing a new continuity/setting and the re-imagined characters, and I feel it did okay for the most part. it still had most of mk11's issues but they were limited due to the smaller caste. too bad that the story caught fire and fell flat on itself when it entered the multiverse segment of the story. it was unnecessary and only trivialized the current story further. it would have been better to just have it be two timelines, liu kang's and shang tsung's, and have the final battle be between our heroes (the characters whom we spent the whole story building) and shang tsung's timeline counterparts. maybe this way we would have less awkward stair fights with surreal character abominations.
overall, it was alright. i just hope in the future they abandon the one or two characters per chapter formula as it's more detriment to the story than anything else. maybe also stay away from special forces, like man I know racism is a given with these games since the begging but all these references are making me cringe every time.

[TEK8 SPOILERS?] so... people are theorizing about the game having two endings due to the trophy list
Tumblr media
i swear to fucking god if they have a choose if kazuya or jin wins ending options i'm gonna be done i WILL drive myself and the entire player base off a cliff.
Tumblr media
looked it up while typing this oh my fucking god I'm right... that's what they're doing. that's WHAT they're doing. this fandom about to get a lot more annoying, I AM DRIVING OFF THIS CLIFF-
i'm fucking hoping they make it clear which one is canon and which one's a "what if" ending because holy shit. HOLY SHIT. honestly anon, I wish I wasn't told this (even though I'd probably find it out later) but. Christ. This might've just killed a lot of my excitement. I MEAN. I don't know why? I guess because I was browsing thru Reddit before getting this message and I'm already seeing annoying fans acting like Kazuya's the morally correct one and Jin's the much more evil one who DESERVES to die (but not precious Kazuya tho!!!) so....... to see that players can make Kazuya win...... yep. It's gonna get real annoying.

Jun, honey, you need to get out of the damn "I can fix him" mentality. You ain't bob the builder. If he doesn't have enough willpower to resist the way your son does, that is his fault. He chose this life. That ship already sailed. It's too late.
Tumblr media
❝ Well . . . I wouldn't compare myself to Bob, but I do have the power to heal others. Jin is stronger because he possesses my power, too. But Kazuya doesn't . . . Kazuya needs extra help, & that's okay. ❞
