I am getting the following error message when trying to use Sim Ripper and yes, I did download the most recent updated version. Details under the cut. I wanted to see if anyone else was having this issue before reporting it, or it is something I am doing.

Following your Unity post - what are game engines that you use/can recommend? If you recommend using one at all

I can't recommend any, I think.

Y'see, I mostly just write my own stuff. The closest to Unity and Unreal that I use is MonoGame (formerly XNA) for modern stuff, in C#, which is not like Unity and Unreal in that MonoGame itself has no IDE. It's just Visual Studio or whatever you prefer to write C# code in. There's no scene editor and such.

And even then I only use MonoGame for 2D stuff, since I have trouble (wholly unrelated to Unity being a complete shitshow) with getting 3D models into a format any of these systems can use. So MonoGame and whatever else works just fine for me, for things like this RPG framework and this nth attempt at a platform game engine.

And sometimes it's not even MonoGame but straight up GDI+ (though since it's C# I should call it System.Drawing), like my erotic roguelike Noxico and the One Game I Finished Development Of, not just in C# but actually done before then on GBA, DS, and SCI:

And then there's the things I've been up to in SDL, like an attempt to write an adventure game engine like SCI, and the emulator for the Asspull IIIx if that counts as game development.

And then there is in fact game development on the Asspull IIIx, which is basically a whole-ass platform of its own:

(If I used it, I still couldn't recommend Löve since that too has no dedicated fancy-pants editor to my knowledge.)

So yeah, I can't recommend anything on the level of Unity, Unreal, and Godot.

Now, MonoGame does have 3D support — I've actually dabbled with it back when it was XNA — but if there's one thing I despise at least as much as Unity it's the XNA Content Pipeline, and you need to use that if you want to do anything with 3D models.

Unless you're fine with simple Wavefront OBJ models that you load and render manually, as opposed to pipeline-mangled Autodesk FBX models with bone rigging and all that and you just invoke the Draw method on 'em.

This nicely fits the aesthetic quality of the rest of the RPG framework. If you want to you can imagine something like the Triforce animation at the start of Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. In fact, I have a test thing set up in the RPG project that does exactly that.

About a month ago, I published how you can connect to MySQL with a small form. One suggestion, or lets promote it to a request, from that post was: “Nice, but how do you create a reusable library for the MySQL Connection Dialog box?” That was a good question but I couldn’t get back until now to write a new blog post. This reusable MySQL connection dialog lets you remove MySQL connection data from the command-line history. This post also shows you how to create and test a Powershell Module. The first step to create a module requires that you set the proper %PSModulePath% environment variable. If you fail to do that, you can put it into a default PowerShell module location but that’s not too effective for testing. You launch the System Properties dialog and click the Environment Variables button: Then, you edit the PSModulePath environment variable in the bottom list of environment variables and add a new path to the PSModulePath. Writing smarter cross-platform .NET Core apps with the API Analyzer and Windows Compatibility Pack

There's a couple of great utilities that have come out in the last few weeks in the .NET Core world that you should be aware of. They are deeply useful when porting/writing cross-platform code.

First is the API Analyzer. As you know, APIs sometimes get deprecated, or you'll use a method on Windows and find it doesn't work on Linux. The API Analyzer is a Roslyn (remember Roslyn is the name of the C#/.NET compiler) analyzer that's easily added to your project as a NuGet package. All you have to do is add it and you'll immediately start getting warnings and/or squiggles calling out APIs that might be a problem.

Check out this quick example. I'll make a quick console app, then add the analyzer. Note the version is current as of the time of this post. It'll change.

Windows Compatibility Pack for .NET Core

When .NET Core 2.0 come out and the .NET Standard 2.0 was finalized, it included over 32k APIs that made it extremely compatible with existing .NET Framework code. In fact, it's so compatible, I was able to easily take a 15 year old .NET app and port it over to .NET Core 2.0 without any trouble at all.

They have more than doubled the set of available APIs from 13k in .NET Standard 1.6 to 32k in .NET Standard 2.0.

.NET Standard 2.0 is cool because it's supported on the following platforms:

.NET Core 2.0

Xamarin.iOS 10.14

Xamarin.Mac 3.8

Xamarin.Android 7.5

When you're porting code over to .NET Core that has lots of Windows-specific dependencies, you might find yourself bumping into APIs that aren't a part of .NET Standard 2.0. So, there's a new (preview) Microsoft.Windows.Compatibility NuGet package that "provides access to APIs that were previously available only for .NET Framework."

There will be two kinds of APIs in the Compatibility Pack. APIs that were a part of Windows originally but can work cross-platform, and APIs that will always be Windows only, because they are super OS-specific. APIs calls to the Windows Registry will always be Windows-specific, for example. But the System.DirectoryServices or System.Drawing APIs could be written in a way that works anywhere. The Windows Compatibility Pack adds over 20,000 more APIs, on top of what's already available in .NET Core. Check out the great video that Immo shot on the compat pack.

The point is, if the API that is blocking you from using .NET Core is now available in this compat pack, yay! But you should also know WHY you are pointing to .NET Core. Work continues on both .NET Core and .NET (Full) Framework on Windows. If your app works great today, there's no need to port unless you need a .NET Core specific feature. Here's a great list of rules of thumb from the docs:

Use .NET Core for your server application when:+

You have cross-platform needs.

You are targeting microservices.

You are using Docker containers.

You need high-performance and scalable systems.

You need side-by-side .NET versions per application.

Use .NET Framework for your server application when:

Your app currently uses .NET Framework (recommendation is to extend instead of migrating).

Your app uses third-party .NET libraries or NuGet packages not available for .NET Core.

Your app uses .NET technologies that aren't available for .NET Core.

Your app uses a platform that doesn’t support .NET Core.

Finally, it's worth pointing out a few other tools that can aid you in using the right APIs for the job.
