Youzitsu 2nd Year Arc 1
Author: Syougo Kinugasa
Illustrator: Tomoseshunsaku
Label: MF Bunko J
Release Date: 24 January 2020
My Score: 3/5
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment is currently releasing this series in English under the title of Classroom of the Elite: Year 2.
Class D managed to survive the first year with little casualties and have started the 2nd year and are immediately plunged into a new trial. They are told to download a new app which gives them information on other students’ abilities and are going to be pairing up with some first year students to study together for upcoming tests where they will be evaluated on their combined scores. This presents a problem for Ayanokouji who knows that one 1st year student comes from the white room and will be trying to get Ayanokouji expelled and could easily do so if they were paired up with him.
One of the issues I’ve been having with this series is how we usually spend so much time in the lead-up to the trial that the trial itself is over super quickly. Like, in this volume, most of it is about Ayanokouji and Horikita searching for partners, and we don’t get to see the 2nd and 1st year students actually working together to pass the test. I always expect the volume to go into more detail about the end of the trial and it never does and it’s starting to get really disappointing. I don’t think this was as much of an issue in the earlier volumes either and I think those early volumes were stronger than the recent volumes that I’ve read.
I also find that Kinugasa has a habit of over-explaining basic concepts. Often, ideas that could easily be explained in one or two paragraphs end up taking up over 10 pages of dialogue for characters to explain. It’s really annoying and is a big issue in this volume.
As for this volume itself, it was fine overall but I wish it was better. The new characters are okay but they don’t breathe a whole lot of new life into this series like I was hoping for them to. They could be interesting but I miss the days when the cast was smaller. Poor Airi really hasn’t had anything to do since volume 6.
Cover characters for this volume are Ayanokouji himself and Nanase, a first-year. Nanase is another thing about this volume that is just fine. She could be interesting in future volumes but we don’t learn a whole lot about her here and if she wasn’t the cover girl, I probably wouldn’t remember her.
I am now caught up with all of the volumes that I own. I do want to continue with this series because it can be really good at times but I’ve found the recent volumes pretty disappointing and I’m not motivated to continue it just yet so I’ll take a break before I continue.
Due to life circumstances, I probably won’t be posting much this month so apologies for that.

Youzitsu 11.5
Author: Syougo Kinugasa
Illustrator: Tomoseshunsaku
Label: MF Bunko J
Release Date: 25 September 2019
My Score: 3/5
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment is currently releasing this series in English under the title of Classroom of the Elite.
This is the final volume of the 1st year arc. It covers the events of Spring Vacation and deals with the graduation of the third years and the fallout from last volume’s trial.
A lot of this volume just felt like set-up for the second year arc and there were so many scenes that seemed to drag on forever. I enjoyed seeing the results of Horikita’s growth over the year but I found her story line with her brother dragged as well. I was happy to see more of Hiyori but I found hers and Ichinose’s stories to be a bit dull and unmemorable. But I really enjoyed the final two stories. One of them was about Matsushita, one of Kei’s friends. She’s started to notice that there’s more to Ayanokouji than meets the eye. I enjoyed seeing a side character getting fleshed out like that and we get to know more about her and she seems pretty interesting. And the final chapter... I don’t want to spoil it but there was a development that happened in it that was very interesting and makes me very excited to start the second year arc. Overall, I thought this was a much more satisfying climax and conclusion than volume 11 was but I did find a lot of the scenes just went on for too long and ended up becoming dull.
Heading into the second year arc, the characters that I want to see more of most are Hiyori and Koenji. I feel like we still barely know anything about Hiyori and I’m so intrigued by her. Koenji has started to get more focus in these last volumes but I feel like we’re only scratching the surface of his character and I really want to know more.
As for the first year arc as whole, I’ve enjoyed it much more than I was expecting to. There have been so many interesting ideas and exciting developments. I have found that a lot of the scenes where characters are just talking do tend to drag and the volumes after volume 7.5 have been a bit of a let-down but it’s been a good experience overall and I’m looking forward to starting the second-year arc.

YouZitsu 11
Author: Syougo Kinugasa
Illustrator: Tomoseshunsaku
Label: MF Bunko J
Release Date: 25 May 2019
My Score: 4/5
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment is currently releasing this series in English under the title of Classroom of the Elite.
It’s finally time for the last trial of the 1st year. This time, each class has to pick out activities that they are confident they could win. These activities can be written tests, card games, sports events, etc. Then, classes will be chosen to pair off and face each other in seven of these activities. One member of each class is chosen to head up the “control tower” and decide who is participating in each event. Ayanokouji is chosen to participate in this activity because he got the Protection Point last volume and it seems like Arisu will get her wish: a showdown with Ayanokouji. Meanwhile, Hirata has changed since the events of last volume and the expulsion of Yamauchi. He’s become distant and has been avoiding getting involved in the new trial.
This volume didn’t quite meet my expectations as the climax of the first year arc. I was really expecting the second and third years to have more to do with the plot but I don’t think Nagumo showed up even once this volume. I found that there was a lot of lead-up to the trial but the trial itself was over too quickly and I would have liked to have seen all of the characters that we have seen grow get more of a chance to shine. They get some small moments, like Sudou not being as quick to anger, but I wanted more than that. It didn’t feel like the ending of a series and I guess that’s a good thing as it isn’t and there’s still a side volume and a whole other series to go but I wanted more of a sense of satisfaction and closure.
Still, this is an excellent and entertaining volume so I can’t be too mad. The showdown between Ayanokouji and Arisu is as exciting as expected and I enjoyed that this trial tested Ayanokouji on his weak point: getting to know his classmates. Because he is in charge of which classmate is participating in which event, he needs to know who is good at what and who does not get along with who. Aside from a couple of people, Ayanokouji is closed off from his classmates so of course he knows very little about them so he needs help from Kei, Kikyou, whose information is never guaranteed to be truthful, and Hirata, who is refusing to talk to anyone. This is an interesting situation and it makes Ayanokouji less of an OP protagonist.
Cover boy this time is Kouenji and cover girl is Meiyui. Kouenji is starting to participate more in the trials but the others still don’t understand him. They don’t know when he’s going to show up and do his best for the class or when he’s going to skip the trial entirely. Still, they can’t deny that he is an asset when he does show up so they’ve got to figure out whether they can rely on him this time. Meiyui is a student from China and gets along with everyone. She has a crush on Hirata and is the only one to continue to try to communicate with him as the others see him as a lost cause. I know by now that the characters on the cover do not necessarily get the main focus in the volume but I was expecting these two to get more to do in the climax. At least they actually did have important parts to play in this volume, unlike last volume’s cover characters.
Next up is volume 11.5 which is the true end of the 1st-year arc and I hope it satisfies me more than this volume did in that regard.
