Dragon Age: The Veilguard and what do we know by now (Game Informer cover story)
>>> SPOILERS ALERT <<<
Tumblr media
Rook passes out after the ritual and wakes up to the Solas' voice who explains wtf happened
Solas is trapped in the Fade because of Rook's doing
Two released gods - Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain
Few drops of Rook's blood interacted with the ritual and connecting them to the Fade forever (explains Rook's blood magic issues)
Lighthouse (DA4 hub) belongs to Solas (🥹)
First companion to recruit (besides Neve Gallus) - Bellara Lutara, an electricity mage + heal ("In Entropy's Grasp" quest). During the quest player will also meet Strife and Irelin (Veil Jumpers from "The Missing")
Each companion has 5 abilities (3 to set up in fight)
You can switch your weapon build during the combat
Warrior can cosplay Captain America (by throwing the shield at enemies)
All combat fun is about synergy and combos
Sooooooo . . .
It's hard to say if Solas "in the flesh" or it's just a voice.
But, theoretically speaking, if it's just a voice.... Will I be completely insane to suppose Solas is a some mix of SAM (Mass Effect: Andromeda) and the Emperor (Baldur's Gate 3) - a kind of adviser/critic/commentator explaining all the magical stuff and evanuris lore inside the Rook's head?
I mean
That does sound interesting. Quite fun too.

Chapter 7: Networking
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every six months, without fail, your dad hosted an office get-together at his penthouse. It was one of those stiff, semi-formal networking events where everyone sipped wine or craft beer while throwing around phrases like "quarterly growth" and "synergy." To you, it was dull, a chore dressed up as an invitation. But your dad always insisted you attend. He claimed it was "his way of spending more time with you," though you strongly suspected an ulterior motive.
Your theory? He wanted you to meet a "suitable bachelor." Of course, he denied it every time you brought it up, brushing off your suspicions with a wave of his hand. Yet, without fail, he would steer you toward any semi-attractive guy remotely close to your age, flashing a wide grin as he said, "Oh, have you met so-and-so? He just passed the bar," or "He's on track to make partner in no time!"
Subtlety was not his strong suit.
Your mother was usually there to save you but instead of attending, she went out for her friends birthday. Yay.
This time, though, your dad threw you for a loop. He invited Miguel. And not just casually. You were irritated the moment you found out. Miguel wasn’t even a lawyer. He worked in biochemistry, for God’s sake. What reason could he possibly have to show up at a gathering like this? The only plausible explanation was the obvious one: Miguel was your dad’s best friend, and your dad couldn’t resist finding any excuse to include him.
But that didn’t mean you had to like it.
After that night, after babysitting Gabriella and everything that unfolded, you were certain that things between you and Miguel would never be the same. Awkward, tense, impossible to play it cool. That's what you had braced yourself for. The memory of his pleading voice, the way he had begged you to stay, still echoed in your mind, replaying like a song stuck on loop. And you, inexplicably, said no.
Miguel O’Hara. The man with the god-like physique, thick with strength yet graceful in every movement. His perfect, dark hair that fell effortlessly into place, and that face...sharp, refined, and annoyingly flawless. A man who could command any room, charm anyone with a glance, and yet somehow, you’d rejected him. The realization still left you dumbfounded. Why would you do that? Because you were scared.
You had to admit it to yourself, no matter how much you tried to rationalize it. You were scared of everything. Of getting caught, of what people might think, of the consequences this could have on your dad's friendship with him. But most of all, you were scared of him. Or maybe, more accurately, what he made you feel. The way his presence pulled at every string inside you, a mixture of fear and desire so intense it left you breathless. You barely knew him, and yet he had this effect on you, as if he’d reached into some part of you no one else had ever seen or touched.
That terrified you. So, you ran.
______________________________________________
The soft hum of classical music filled the air as you stepped into your dad’s apartment, a place you’d come to know as the unofficial hub for his biannual networking events. The scent of hors d'oeuvres wafted from the kitchen, mingling with the faint, sharp tang of wine. You adjusted the hem of your dress, already regretting not choosing something more casual. You hadn’t even been there for five minutes, but you could already feel the weight of your dad’s well-meaning yet misguided matchmaking attempts looming over you.
“Sweetheart!” Your dad’s voice boomed over the chatter of neatly dressed professionals, his face lighting up as he caught sight of you. He maneuvered his way through the crowd, a glass of whiskey in one hand, his other arm stretched out to embrace you.
“Hi, Dad,” you greeted, returning his hug while scanning the room. The usual suspects were here—young attorneys fresh out of law school, seasoned partners in tailored suits, and a smattering of business executives exchanging pleasantries.
“You look great,” he said, pulling back to get a better look at you. “You know, we’ve got a great turnout this time. I want you to meet a few people.”
“Dad, please, not tonight,” you said, already bracing yourself for the introductions you knew were coming. “I’m just here for moral support. And free food.”
He chuckled, patting your shoulder. “Oh, come on, humor me. Just say hello to a couple of people. That’s all I’m asking.”
You rolled your eyes but smiled. “Fine. A couple.”
Satisfied, your dad gave a slight nod, then added, “By the way, Miguel’s here.”
Your smile faltered. “What?”
He took a casual sip of his drink, like he hadn’t just dropped a bombshell. “Miguel. You know, my best friend? He’s here.”
“I know who Miguel is,” you snapped, lowering your voice as a few heads turned your way. “Why is he here? He doesn’t even work in law.”
“He’s a brilliant guy, and he knows a lot of people. Networking isn’t just for lawyers, you know.” Your dad’s tone was annoyingly chipper.
You sighed, pinching the bridge of your nose. “Dad...”
“And,” he continued, his voice lowering conspiratorially, “he asked if you’d be here.”
That stopped you in your tracks. “He asked about me?”
Your dad shrugged, but there was a dubious glint in his eye. “I thought the same thing..."
“Dad.” Your tone was sharp now, a clear warning.
“I’m just saying,” he said with a grin before slipping away into the crowd, likely to find his next victim to introduce you to.
Great. Just great. You glanced around the room, your heart thudding a little faster as you wondered where Miguel might be. You told yourself it was frustration. Irritation. Definitely not anything else.
And then you saw him.
He was standing near the balcony, dressed in a dark blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up just enough to reveal the corded muscles of his forearms. His dark hair was perfectly styled, his posture relaxed yet commanding as he spoke to a group of captivated listeners. His deep laugh carried over the chatter, and you hated how it sent a ripple through your chest.
Of course he’d fit right in. Miguel had this effortless charm about him that made people gravitate toward him. And as much as you hated to admit it, you weren’t immune to it either.
You debated retreating to the kitchen, maybe hiding out with the appetizers until this whole thing blew over. But then, as if sensing your presence, Miguel’s gaze lifted—and landed directly on you.
His lips curved into a slow, knowing smile. Damn it.
Before you could think of an escape plan, he excused himself from the group and started making his way toward you. You could feel the heat rising to your cheeks as he approached, his broad frame cutting through the crowd like it was nothing.
“Fancy seeing you here,” Miguel said, his voice low and smooth as he stopped in front of you. His eyes roamed over you briefly, lingering just a second too long. “You clean up nice.”
“Miguel,” you said, your tone flat despite the flutter in your chest. “What are you doing here?”
“I'm not really sure,” he replied simply, his lips twitching into a smirk. “Your dad invited me.”
“Of course he did,” you muttered, crossing your arms. “And let me guess, he told you I’d be here?”
Miguel chuckled, the sound rich and warm as he shrugged. “Maybe.”
You narrowed your eyes at him, but before you could respond, your dad’s voice cut through the air again. “Miguel! I see you found my daughter.”
“Yep, found her,” Miguel said, his gaze never leaving yours.
Your dad clapped him on the shoulder, beaming. “You two should catch up. Miguel’s got some exciting projects in the works. He’s doing amazing things.”
“I’m sure he is,” you said dryly, shooting Miguel a pointed look.
Your dad, oblivious as ever, excused himself to mingle, leaving you alone with Miguel.
“So,” Miguel said, tilting his head slightly, his eyes sparkling with amusement. “How long are you going to keep pretending you’re not happy to see me?”
You scoffed, but your lips betrayed you, twitching into a reluctant smile. “I’m not pretending.”
“Sure you’re not.” His smirk deepened, his confidence palpable, and you hated how effortlessly he could unravel you. “But for what it’s worth, I’m glad I came. And not for the... food.” He glanced down at the cracker in his hand, spread with liver pâté, his face twisting in mock disgust.
Your stomach flipped at the implication in his words, a rush of heat rising to your cheeks. You quickly looked away, trying to compose yourself before you gave him the satisfaction of seeing how easily he got to you.
"Right..." you muttered, the same look of disgust flashing across your face as you glanced at the cracker. You hated liver pâté too.
"Give me that." Without thinking, you snatched the cracker out of his hand and, with zero hesitation, tossed it over the balcony railing. You dusted your hands off theatrically, like you’d just disposed of something vile, a satisfied smirk creeping onto your face.
Miguel raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Bold move. What if someone sees you littering?”
“They should thank me for saving them from that culinary abomination,” you shot back, trying to ignore the way his low chuckle sent a ripple of warmth through your chest.
You turned on your heel. “Let’s go find something more... palatable,” you said over your shoulder, your voice steady but teasing.
As you strode ahead, you could feel his eyes on you, trailing over every curve, every sway of your hips. His gaze was almost tangible, burning through the thin fabric of your dress, and the awareness of it made you stand a little taller, your stride just a bit more deliberate.
The room was filled with your dad’s colleagues—businessmen in sharp suits and ties, all of them networking with the same rehearsed smiles and calculated charm. A few of them greeted you as you passed, their eyes lingering a little too long. Predatory gazes. It made your skin crawl.
Miguel noticed. He always noticed.
His jaw tightened, the muscle ticking visibly. He said nothing, but his steps fell in line with yours, a silent but protective presence at your side. There was a tension in the air now, an unspoken understanding between the two of you. Miguel wasn’t the type to openly bristle, but his body language spoke volumes. The subtle shift of his shoulders, the hard set of his jaw—it all screamed mine.
You reached the refreshment table in the kitchen. Your hand hovered over a tray of hors d'oeuvres that actually looked edible. Before you could grab one, Miguel leaned down, his voice a low murmur meant only for you.
luckily, no one was in the kitchen when miguel spoke...
"Next time one of them looks at you like that, I might have to say something."
You froze, your hand still hovering mid-air. The heat of his words hit you like a current, his voice curling around you like a possessive whisper. You turned your head slightly, your eyes meeting his.
“They’re harmless,” you said, your voice soft but firm, trying to dismiss the tension.
Miguel’s dark eyes bored into yours, his expression unreadable. “Maybe. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it.”
The intensity of his gaze made your pulse race, but you quickly turned back to the table, grabbing a tiny sandwich to distract yourself. "Jealousy doesn’t suit you, Miguel," you teased, keeping your tone light.
He didn’t laugh. Instead, his lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile. “Who said I was jealous?”
You swallowed hard, the energy between you charged and impossible to ignore. If this night was already this intense, you weren’t sure how you were going to make it through the rest of the evening.
He was toying with you, so you decided to toy with him, too. Two could play this game. Picking up a delicate hors d'oeuvre, a puff pastry topped with some kind of fancy cheese.
You held it up to his lips, your gaze daring him.
His brow arched in mild surprise, the corner of his mouth twitching as though he were fighting back a smirk. His arms remained crossed over his broad chest, exuding that unshakable confidence that only Miguel O’Hara could pull off. He didn’t move at first, studying you like you were the appetizer he really wanted.
Then, without breaking eye contact, he leaned in, his lips parting as he took the offering from your fingers. His eyes fluttered closed for a brief moment, a soft hum of approval escaping him as he bit down. He chewed deliberately, his movements slow, almost languid, as though he were savoring not just the food but the game you’d initiated.
Your breath hitched slightly, caught off guard by how sensuous such a simple act could be. His lips brushed against your fingertips ever so lightly as he pulled back, sending a jolt of heat through your arm and down your spine.
“That was… decent,” he murmured as he finished chewing. His eyes opened, locking onto yours with an intensity that made your stomach flip. “Got anything better?”
You tilted your head, refusing to let him see how much his response affected you. “Maybe, but I’m not sure you deserve it,” you quipped, setting the empty toothpick back on the table and turning slightly away.
Miguel chuckled, low and deep, a sound that sent a shiver through you. “Careful, cariño,” he teased. His voice dipped lower as he added, “You might start something you can’t finish.”
Your pulse quickened as his proximity sent every nerve in your body into overdrive. You could feel the heat radiating off him, his presence both magnetic and overwhelming. But you weren’t about to back down.
“Who says I can’t finish it?” you shot back, glancing over your shoulder with a playful smirk before popping a different hors d'oeuvre into your mouth.
He leaned in just a fraction closer, his lips near your ear now. “I guess we’ll see,” he murmured, his voice a quiet challenge that made your knees feel unsteady.
It was just a game, but the tension between you was anything but playful. You swallowed hard, pretending to focus on the tray of food in front of you, but every part of you was hyperaware of him. His warmth, his scent, the way his voice seemed to wrap around you like a soft, dark ribbon.
If this was a battle of wills, it wasn’t clear who would win. But one thing was certain, Miguel wasn’t going to make it easy for you. And, if you were honest with yourself, you didn’t want him to.
Miguel pushed a strand of hair out of your face, his touch lingering for a moment too long. You were completely trapped in the moment, the tension thick enough to make the world around you disappear. Something unspoken pulled you closer to him, your breath catching in your throat as your heart pounded in your chest.
And then, like cold water being dumped over you, a voice shattered the moment.
"Is that you?" A familiar voice called out.
Startled, you stepped back swiftly, leaning against the table behind you for balance, forcing your eyes away from Miguel's. It took everything in you to break the magnetic pull of his gaze. When you finally looked over, your stomach dropped.
"Benny?" you blinked, the disbelief in your voice apparent. "What... what are you doing here?"
Benny, your ex, stood just a few feet away, wearing the same cocky smile you remembered too well. His eyes flicked from you to Miguel, sizing him up before returning to you with an unmistakable gleam of interest.
"I work for your dad at the firm now," Benny replied casually, his hands sliding into his pockets. His gaze traveled over your figure shamelessly, and he gave a small, appreciative smile. "You look... fantastic."
You resisted the urge to roll your eyes. "Thanks."
Your mind raced. Benny working for your dad now? That couldn’t just be a coincidence. Was this one of his elaborate attempts to win you back? It wouldn’t be the first time he’d pulled something like this.
You stole a quick glance at Miguel, checking his reaction. He was still there, of course, leaning back with his arms crossed, his expression calm but his sharp eyes missing nothing.
"Oh!" you blurted out awkwardly, trying to defuse the situation. "Uh, this is Mr. O'Hara... my dad's friend." You trailed off, your voice faltering slightly as you felt Miguel’s gaze burn into the side of your face. You knew he hated being reduced to "formalities," but it was the only way to keep Benny from sniffing around. Benny had a habit of digging, and if he found out the truth, you'd never hear the end of it.
Benny didn’t seem to notice your awkwardness. Instead, he extended his hand toward Miguel with a friendly, albeit slightly smug, smile. "Name's Benjamin Whitefield, but you can call me Benny." He pushed his sirty blond hair back with his other hand.
Miguel regarded Benny coolly before reaching out to shake his hand. His grip was firm, his movements precise, as if asserting dominance without even trying.
"Miguel," he said curtly, his deep voice smooth and measured as he quickly released Benny's hand.
"I've never seen you around before, Miguel. You work for James?" Benny asked, tilting his head slightly as if trying to figure out where Miguel fit into the picture.
Miguel’s lips twitched into a faint smirk, his posture remaining relaxed but his tone pointed. "No," he said, his eyes cutting into Benny with a quiet intensity. "We’re just... old friends, is all."
You shifted uncomfortably, trying to think of a way to change the subject before Benny could push further. He was clearly intrigued, and you could practically see the wheels turning in his head.
"Small world, huh?" Benny said, his tone laced with an edge of curiosity as his green eyes bounced between you and Miguel.
"Too small," Miguel replied, his voice cool and unwavering, making it clear that he wasn’t interested in small talk, or Benny.
You bit your lip, glancing between the two men. The tension was palpable, and you knew Benny well enough to know he wouldn’t drop this easily. But Miguel... Miguel wasn’t someone you could imagine backing down, either. This was going to get complicated. Fast.
Benny chuckled lightly, clearly picking up on the tension but doing nothing to ease it. Instead, he took a step closer to you, leaning slightly into your personal space. "So, what have you been up to lately? It's been a while, hasn’t it?"
You straightened your posture, forcing a polite smile even though you could feel Miguel’s eyes still burning into you. "Not much," you replied, your tone clipped. "Just keeping busy."
"Busy, huh?" Benny’s smile widened, his tone dripping with familiarity that made your skin crawl. "You know, I’ve been meaning to call you. Maybe we could—"
"Yeah, she was busy having a conversation with me," Miguel interrupted, looking away and wiping his nose, his voice low and steady but carrying a weight that made Benny freeze mid-sentence.
You turned sharply to Miguel, eyes wide in disbelief. Your stomach flipped at his boldness, and you couldn’t decide whether you wanted to kick him or kiss him for it.
Benny blinked, clearly caught off guard, before recovering with a forced laugh. "Oh?" he said, his tone suddenly more defensive. "I didn’t realize..." His gaze darted between you and Miguel, searching for any signs of what Miguel had just implied.
Miguel didn’t elaborate. Instead, he took a deliberate step closer to you, his arm brushing against yours in a way that felt both protective and possessive. He looked down at Benny, his towering frame and unwavering gaze making the him visibly uncomfortable.
"Yeah," Miguel said simply, his tone calm but leaving no room for argument.
Benny’s jaw tightened, and he looked at you, his expression a mix of confusion and frustration. "Well... I guess I'll... leave you to it," he said, though his tone betrayed his irritation.
"Thanks," you said quickly, trying to cut the conversation short before it could escalate. "It was nice seeing you, Benny, but we should probably get going."
Benny hesitated, clearly wanting to say more, but Miguel’s presence seemed to stifle him. "Right," he said finally, his voice a little sharper now. "See you around."
He turned and walked away, his shoulders stiff, and you let out a breath you hadn’t realized you’d been holding.
"You didn’t have to do that," you said softly, glancing up at Miguel.
He tilted his head, his expression unreadable. "Do what?"
"That whole... claiming me thing," you replied, your cheeks flushing slightly.
Miguel smirked, the corner of his mouth quirking upward in a way that made your heart race. "Just setting the record straight," he said, his voice smooth and unapologetic.
You rolled your eyes, trying to hide the way your pulse was quickening. "Well, now he’s going to think there’s something going on between us."
Miguel leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a low rumble that sent shivers down your spine. "Isn’t there?"
Your breath hitched, and for a moment, you couldn’t find the words to respond. The way he was looking at you, intense and unyielding, made your head spin.
Before you could answer, a waiter passed by with a tray of champagne glasses, and Miguel reached out, grabbing two. He handed one to you, his fingers brushing against yours.
"Relax," he said, his tone teasing now. "Let’s enjoy the party."
You stared at him for a moment, your mind still reeling from everything that had just happened. Finally, you took the glass, muttering under your breath, "Easier said than done."
Miguel chuckled softly, his eyes glinting with amusement as he clinked his glass lightly against yours. "We’ll see about that."
As you sipped your champagne, you couldn’t help but notice how much taller he seemed, how his presence seemed to fill the room. And as much as you tried to play it cool, you knew one thing for sure you were feeling something.

All my notes from the Q+A, organized by topic
Tumblr media
Going as in depth here as my notes allow, was doing this at work so I may have missed some things. This will be long. but here’s the gist of it below 👇
Companions
Switch from 4 person squad to 3 person squad
For the sake of combat gameplay, 3 seemed to be the right fit
Was described as more “immersive” and “intimate”
The team wanted to “spotlight” these characters and give them more presence
Romances and relationships
All seven companions will be romanceable by any Rook
All are pansexual, none are asexual
Companions will romance each other if Rook doesn’t
Confirmed Harding/Taash as a possible companion romance
Companions may “temporarily leave” based on Rook’s decisions but will still “always fight for Thedas” as “this is the greatest threat we’ve seen”
Heavily teased permadeath
When asked abt the possibility of a Manfred romance: “not THAT skeleton, but not NO skeletons”
Misc Companion/Npc info
Inky will be coming back, as confirmed before
Devs excited for the “authenticity” of our new companions, and the fact that they “feel like dear friends”
Companions’ looks will be somewhat customizable, like in DA2 where their fit could change depending on story beats, but with a wider range of choices
These will be the “deepest companion arcs we’ve ever done”
Combat
Mechanics
The combat will be “quite tactical” with more opportunities for strategy in higher difficulty settings
A “robust difficulty system”
Tactical mode will not be overhead, but will be a targeting system as shown in the demo
Tactical mode will be used in and out of combat
Emphasis on synergies and combos
Companions will be controlled via issuing “commands”
Rook’s death/downed status will cause a save to reload unless one of your companions has learned the revive spell
Healing magic is coming back
Class specifics
Some specializations for mages were mentioned including Necromancy, “Combat Mage” which promised more close quarters fighting, and “something more elemental”
Dual wielding is coming back but is once again for rogues only, not warriors
Warriors will have a choice of ‘sword and board’ or two-handed
Cone of Cold and Fireball are getting revamped versions, namely Frost Nova and Meteor
Character creation
Appearance
Everyone who spoke about the character creator was very excited to mention how robust it is
Extra attention paid to hair styles and physics
“Magnificent” dwarf beards
More tattoo variations for different cultures
Body sliders and a wide range of skin tones
The character creator will be shown off in more depth in the future before launch (👀)
Roleplaying and story
Rook will be from one of six factions, that will combine with a "lineage" to provide context for our character
There will be no playable origins, but we will be given opportunities to define the character through play
This includes defining emotional reactions to the mentioned events of Rook's background and lineage
Rook can be nonbinary, with He/She/They pronoun options
Crafting will, while revamped, make a return. You will be able to "improve and customize" your character's look
Somehow, they were not able to reveal more about crafting because it gets into spoiler territory ("a mysterious entity helps you")
The Keep will not be coming back, instead you will be able to define your choices from previous games through the character creator in a "Last time on Dragon Age" type of recap
Gameplay
Locations
The game begins in Minrathous, as confirmed by the gameplay teaser, but doesn't stay there
Rook will be visiting plenty of new locations previously unseen in gameplay such as Arlathan forest (where there will apparently be many "fade touched" enemies)
Kal Sharok was mentioned, with no confirmation that we would actively go there in-game, but they promised to "show what they can" of this location
We will have a hub (like skyhold/haven) called The Lighthouse
While war table missions won't be making a comeback, the lighthouse will have it's own gameplay functions
Locations will change based on player actions
More brand new locations will be "drip-fed" to us in references, like Tevinter was in dao
No more mounts, as locations are trimmed down and more linear we will not need them
Dialogue
Tone/Emotion/Choice wheels are coming back
Emphasis on making clear what Rook will be saying/choosing (hopefully no more mishaps a la "glass him")
Wanted "choices to be explicitly clear, consequences less so"
Dev notes
What everyone on the team is excited for
Character creator got huge shoutout
Companions were also hyped (story arcs feel deep and authentic, characters react to you in a meaningful way)
Art team received a big shoutout as well, with this being their "best attempt yet" at visual storytelling (not just codex entries and conversations)
Veilguard is meant to combine "familiarity and novelty" with the team saying it should feel like coming home to longtime fans, and also be something fresh for new players
Team Promises
A focus on delivering a complete single-player experience (no microtransactions, no subscription, no live service)
More VA information and teasers in the future pre-launch
More information on pre-orders soon
Side quests will be "handcrafted" and "support the narrative" ie no more collecting shards, no more getting locations locked behind power mechanics
Accessibility features were glossed over, but there was some talk of saving this info for launch (???)
Random bits
We will have many opportunities to hug and pet Assan the griffon
Elves went bald after living a millennium, this is why solas is an egg
The inquisitor will be heavily tied to solas' story and will appear in the flesh
The decision of who was left behind in the fade will not be important to Veilguard, but was heavily implied to be relevant in the future (not in this game but...)

Hi! How and when did you get into DC comics?
Well my original entry to DC was that I was a fan of Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman when I was a kid and it was originally showing. This actually was a decent entrypoint to the DC mythos, as it's famous for having probably the best TV-comics synergy of all time: the Death of Superman was written to have a plot running while Lois & Clark built up to the wedding, so they could do simultaneous weddings in the comics and the show.
It worked out pretty well for DC.
But DC Comics, as comic books? Well somewhere around 2006 or so I'd transitioned into reading some fic for Lois & Clark, as a change. I then moved on to stories about Bruce/Selina (which I had a reasonable amount of background for from the Burton & Schumacher movies), and ended up in the scans_daily scene on LJ. This was the heyday of scans_daily, when you could pretty reasonably follow along a lot of major comics via the 1/3 posting rule; you didn't get everything, but that plus the summary got you across events pretty well.
I'd liked Barbara Gordon as a little girl, watching the movies. It was at this point I discovered Oracle.
The first comics graphic novel I ever purchased was Birds of Prey: Perfect Pitch. I've still got it. I ended up reading a bunch of runs recommended via content I liked on scans_daily: Birds of Prey, Robin, No Man's Land, Nightwing, Batgirl 2000, Blue Beetle, and Young Justice. A couple of these I was buying trades for (BoP and Blue Beetle); the rest I was reading via ye olde torrent packets. I was also reading and collecting a bunch of Vertigo titles: The Sandman, Fables, Y: the Last Man, and one or two Marvel titles (Runaways and Power Pack).
I dropped out of DC fandom, like so many others, around 2010-2011. It was actually prior to n52 in my case: I wasn't enjoying Batman Reborn, they'd cancelled my two favourite books (Birds of Prey and Blue Beetle), but the last straw was probably when they murdered Lian Harper.
I noped out. And it was a pretty good call on my part, given that n52 was barrelling down anyway.
I was still occasionally dipping in to read fic, mostly about characters I particularly cared about, but every time I took a breath and paid attention to gossip about what was currently happening in comics, it was mostly terrible news (Lian was still dead; people told me Roy's personality had been obliterated; Barbara was Batgirl and magically healed; the universe resets sucked and everyone hated them; Jason was somehow still alive; everyone was mad about something that had happened to Dick; etc etc)
It was during 2022, when I don't even know how I came across it, but I discovered that DC had finally reprinted Young Justice in trade. This was huge; collections had refused to do this during the 2000s aside from a trade of Sins of Youth back when it came out. There was a general attitude that the group of largely younger and largely female fans weren't worth catering to. The fact that DC now saw us as a lucrative market suggested to me that my contemporaries were finally getting their chance to start running the asylum.
So I dipped back into the community. It was a little hard at first, because hubs had changed, and locating fans who liked the things I personally liked took a little while. But I got back into the fandom, and got back into the fic, and discovered that back in about 2017 there'd been a revival to start reprinting a lot of my favourite comics runs, and that DCUI was the best way to read comics these days, and I could get access to it in Australia.
And because DCUI was just so much better than the methods of reading comics I'd been dealing with 15 years previously, and I'd had an idea for a story I wanted to write, I started a canon read through review, starting all the way back in ALPOD with Tim's earliest comics.
And here I am. I often have older opinions on things simply because I remember being in these debates 15+ years ago, and then I missed the intervening period, so my opinions never updated or heard the changed details (or are only slowly doing so now). I'm a preboot girl at heart because that's where I fell in love with various characters. I, like every other Batfan with a similar history to mine (and there are a lot of us) went through that moment of sheer bemusement over the Tim & Jason tag at AO3 as my most prominent memory of their relationship was Tim kicking Jason in the nuts.
And I've bought a lot of trades ever since getting back into the fandom, because I can't lose access to them AND they're just so far superior for collection purposes than floppies.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A container ship rammed into a major bridge in   early Tuesday, causing it to snap and plunge into the river below. Several vehicles fell into the chilly waters, and rescuers were searching for survivors.
Two people were rescued from the waters under the Francis Scott Key Bridge, one in serious condition, according to Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace. He said authorities “may be looking for upwards of seven people” but said that number could change. It was not clear if the two rescued were included in the seven.
It was not immediately clear what caused the cargo ship to crash into the bridge long before the busy morning commute in what one official called a “developing mass casualty event” in a major American city just outside of Washington.
The ship crashed into one of the bridge’s supports, causing the structure to snap and buckle at several points and tumble into the water in a matter of seconds — a shocking spectacle that was captured on video and posted on social media. The vessel caught fire, and thick, black smoke billowed out of it.
“Never would you think that you would see, physically see, the Key Bridge tumble down like that. It looked like something out of an action movie,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, calling it “an unthinkable tragedy.”
Sonar has indicated that there are vehicles in the water, where the temperature was about 47 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius) in the early hours of Tuesday, according to a buoy that collects data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Earlier, Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore Fire Department, told The Associated Press that several vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse, including one the size of a tractor-trailer truck. The bridge came down in the middle of night when traffic would be lighter than during the day when thousands of cars traverse the span.
Cartwright called the collapse a “developing mass casualty event,” though he didn’t know at the time how many people were affected.
He added that some cargo appeared to be dangling from the bridge, which spans the Patapsco River at the entrance to a busy harbor. The river leads to the Port of Baltimore, a major hub for shipping on the East Coast. Opened in 1977, the bridge is named for the writer of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and said he was working to get federal resources deployed. The FBI was also on the scene.
Synergy Marine Group — which owns and manages the ship called the Dali — confirmed the vessel hit a pillar of the bridge at about 1:30 a.m. while two pilots were in control. It said all crew members, including the pilots, were accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries.
The Dali was headed from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and flying under a Singapore flag, according to data from Marine Traffic. The container ship is about 985 feet (300 meters) long and about 157 feet (48 meters) wide, according to the website.
In 2001, a freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed in a tunnel in downtown Baltimore and caught fire, spewing black smoke into surrounding neighborhoods and forcing officials to temporarily close all major roads into the city.

In a Resident Evil AU set in the Zootopia universe, what animals would Chreon be?
I had a random idea about Chreon working in the R.P.D. as Zootopia animals bubble up, and I'm so curious to see what animals the fandom would imagine them (or any other RE characters) to be.
I'm not sure if the 500-word intro that I drabbled out will ever become more, but it can be read under the cut.
First animals that came to my mind was Leon as a wallaroo (smaller kangaroo, herbivore prey animal, has a powerful kick), and Chris as some sort of big predator cat. Tell me your thoughts 💚💙
Also, I'm giggling at this dumb equus joke:
“How can I join STARS?” Leon looks over his shoulder to glance at the strapping zebra asking the question. “Now, now, hold your horses,” the presenter says.
Nestled in between mountain ranges, bends of rivers and sprawling woods is a citified span of land called Raccoon City, named after the one native animal of the region that was shrewd enough to thrive across all the various rocky, wet, and leafy habitats of the surrounding area. Conveniently located where the differing terrains intersected and easily accessible for all the diverse fauna in the area, Raccoon City became a popular hub for inter-species trade and eventually developed into an urban centre where creatures and critters of all shapes and sizes could live together in harmony. “Today, Raccoon City is seen as a beacon of hope for peaceful coexistence across the entire animal kingdom. However, while most see the benefits and synergies of inter-kingdom cooperation, there are still wildlife that prefer the feral way of life and see the commingling of species as a threat.” The primate delivering the presentation jabs his pointer stick at the projector screen displaying a photograph of an untamed tiger bearing its viciously sharp teeth at a bird caught in mid-flight. Leon fights off the shudder that threatens to shoot down his spine at the sight of that wide maw, an evolutionary response of the predation instinct. Seated all around him are other fresh police academy graduates, arranged from front row to back row by size. Leon sees a waterbird in the front row ruffle its feathers, shaking from beak to tail, and is glad he’d spent so much time on desensitization training so that he wouldn’t be caught trembling in his boots. Despite it being a natural reaction, a cop quaking with fear just doesn’t inspire much confidence in the public eye. The presenter advances the slide deck using his remote clicker, and the room rustles with excitement over the next picture. STARS really needs no introduction. Everyone can recognize their distinctive forest green tactical gear, if not the unmistakable crest proudly emblazoned on the sleeves. Still, the primate brandishes his pointer stick at the screen again, saying, “The R.P.D.’s STARS division protects Raccoon City against the beasts looking to disturb the peace of our citizens.” He clicks to the next slide, opening his mouth to continue his presentation, when he’s interrupted by a question from the back. “How can I join STARS?” Leon looks over his shoulder to glance at the strapping zebra asking the question. “Now, now, hold your horses,” the presenter says, waving off the question and directing everyone’s attention back to the projector screen. “There are two paths rookie officers can pursue: Traffic Services and the Emergency Services Unit. Only after your first year on the force can you apply to other policing units. Now, STARS, in particular, is a division where candidates are scouted; only officers with a recommendation from a STARS captain are invited to apply. Do your best to protect and serve, and you just might catch the eye of STARS.” The zebra in the back row gives a braying sigh in response.

K-Pop Song Review: NMIXX - "Run For Roses" (with Young K of DAY6)
Tumblr media
What a wise choice to put BAE's intimidating low register voice to start "Run For Roses". It's pulling out a competitive vibe as if there's no going back. I love the "go big or go home" energy from this song.
Turns out, Run For Roses is another term for a famous horse racing, Kentucky Derby. The winner would get a blanket (for the horse) and a huge bucket (for the jockey) that was made from hundreds of red roses. So, I think it's safe to say that NMIXX's "Run For Roses" means "run for glory".
The lyrics were co-written by DAY6's Young K, Lee Seuran, and THE HUB's Frankie Day. They substitute the race thingy to NMIXX's journey (that may be linked to their MIXXTOPIA universe). I just can feel the adrenaline from the first verse.
youtube
Challenge the impossible, yeah, we fight back
An invitation thrown into an unstable reality
With an expression full of dissatisfaction, we're back
I'll burn like fire, no limitation
Blow sweep my heart
We gotta go, woo
Our synergy is in full bloom
So that I don't lose the romance between you and me
Let's run
For the musical aspect, "Run For Roses" adapted country-pop music as the fiddle sound appears in pre-chorus. Country itself is a genre that is deeply rooted in southern America. Back to horse racing, Kentucky is a state in the Southeastern region of the United States. So, I can see a solidity of the concept here!
I'm glad that the song not only lasts for 2 minutes like the actual race duration. If I'm not wrong, it's about 3,5 minutes. The dynamics of "Run For Roses" was crazy. Their collaboration with Young K on It's Live with Young K makes it phenomenal. The DAY6's bassist ate the female key and his harmony with the girls was so ear-pleasing. Haewon, Lily, Sullyoon, BAE, Jiwoo, and Kyujin should get more recognition for their amazing talents.
"Run For Roses" is my first candidate for the best 2024 song. It would be featured on NMIXX's 2nd EP, Fe3O4: BREAK, that will be released on January 15th. Make sure you check it out later :)
