Oh boy, I'm excited/nervous to share this - I wrote a song. About Tech Bad Batch.
I just had... so many feelings about him, and how his life/'death' (as an amazing, actually freaking groundbreaking autistic character, done quite dirty by the narrative's conclusion) was handled, the story choices and the fan reaction to them. Feelings of anger, betrayal, loss, utter confusion due to frankly bizarre story structure and simply falling into fog (where we can't see him) -
Anyway. It's been a lot. For a lot of us. 💚
So this is me processing... All That. And coming to the conclusion that even if aspects of it hurt me, ultimately, stories and the people in them belong to all of us, and our feelings about them are ours and real, even if the characters aren't. Much love to this show and fandom, always. And yes, I feel better now. This was therapy.
(Obligatory: this isn't an invitation for debate or discourse. It's an expression of art, and arguments/drags will be futile. Nice words, however are very welcome. 💜 Also, this song is on Bandcamp, and probably elsewhere soon!)
Lyrics under the cut!
Never thought I'd catch a glimpse of someone like you
Sees the universe and life the way that I do
And best of all, they let you shine
Galaxies illuminate in your rare mind
And you think like me
I knew that you feel like me
When I ran the numbers they all told me you'd stay
Logical conclusions pointing only one way
I never could take much on faith
Always needed evidence no one could shake
But I believed in you
I let myself believe in you
But now you're gone
The story's all wrong
I feel like such a fool!
They told me you would come back
Always supposed to come home
Even waiting for you seemed like a game
Waiting just to see your face
I'd see your shadow every day
But fate gets twisted
And I can't see you.
Playing back the memories time after time
Every place they told me I misread the signs
And every time they'd hint and tease
I laughed along, but the joke's on me
If you had to go,
Why am I the last to know?
But we lace our boots and pick ourselves off the ground
Standing side by side in the joy we've found
Who cares if stories break my trust
When they belong to all of us?
Can you see us all,
Standing by to break your fall?
We've all been told
How the story unfolds
But rebels live on hope!
Hoping that you'll come back
Waiting till you come home
But even if you never return
I don't regret a thing
You would be so proud to see
How we remember
And we still see you.

Glenn Jones - We've Only Just Begun (The Romance Is Not Over)
Happy birthday to soul singer supreme, #GlennJonesHappy birthday to singer supreme Glenn Jones, born September 27, 1962.Over his four decades plus of recording, Glenn Jones has rarely received the acclaim that he has deserved.  While that may be attributable to a perceived lack of distinctiveness and consistency in the material he's covered over his career, he and his catalog of material have generally been underrated, and it is only in the latter stages of his career that he has begun to receive proper credit as a fine Soul singer.Like great Soul artists from Sam Cooke to Aretha Franklin, Glenn Jones' singing origins are in the Church.  Jones spent most of his teen and early adult years singing Gospel in various groups, most notably the Modulations.  He then worked with many of the Gospel greats of the 70s, including Rev. James Cleveland and the Mighty Clouds of Joy, and appeared to have a bright future in the Gospel world. In the late 70s, Jones came to the attention of R&B producer Norman Connors, who helped start the careers of so many Soul vocalists such as Phyllis Hyman and Michael Henderson.  Connors recruited Jones to sing on his 1980 LP, Take It To the Limit, and to pursue a career in secular R&B.  After touring with Connors, Jones signed with RCA Records for what would be a productive four-year relationship.  During that period he worked with Connors, SOLAR producer whiz Leon Sylvers and others, and released some moderately successful material, including "Show Me, " "Bring Me Back Your Love," and a fine adult contemporary duet with Dionne Warwick, "Finder of Lost Loves" (from the ABC show of the same name).Jones jumped to the nascent Jive Records label in 1987 and scored his biggest crossover hit, "We've Only Just Begun," a nice midtempo number that received significant Soul and Pop airplay.  He had another hit two years later with "Stay" before moving to Atlantic Records and scoring his first Soul #1 with "Here I Go Again" and a top 10 follow-up, "I've Been Searching (Nobody Like You)."  He recorded his last Atlantic LP, "Here I Am," two years later. While a review of Jones' chart history from 1983-1994 shows an impressive string of hits, there was never a signature Glenn Jones style, as the quality and style of his albums appeared to be unusually dependent on the producer with whom he was working.  Consequently, while a fine singer, Jones was often not seen as particularly distinctive, and his career developed more as a string of unrelated songs than as a cohesive whole.  And far from reaching the monster commercial peaks of vocalists such as Luther Vandross or Lionel Richie, Jones remained to the public consciousness at a level below even the next grouping of Soul singers, such as Jeffrey Osborne and Peabo Bryson (each of whom personally crafted a strong, distinctive style that made their material both consistent and identifiable). So, as the mid-90s came and Jones stopped recording, not many people appeared to notice.  Then a funny thing happened.  In 1998, as part of a minor resurgence of "old school" singers, Barry White, Peabo Bryson, Regina Belle, James Ingram and a number of other solo artists released new material.  Though forgotten by many, at that time Jones quietly released It's Time.  It was a surprise gem and was perhaps the best of the bunch.  With a nice mix of solid upbeat material (such as the great cut "24/7") and ballads, Jones sounded more confident and distinctive than ever.  But it was the bluesy, soulful ballad "Baby Come Home" from that album that was a seminal career moment for Jones - most certainly his finest Soul vocal performance ever - and that demonstrated, after fifteen years of solo recordings, that Glenn Jones had developed into a great vocalist who had met the promise hinted at with his early Gospel success. In 2002, Jones signed with Russ Freeman's Peak Records and released "Feels Good" with moderate success.  And in 2006, he returned on Shanachie Records with Forever: Timeless R&B Classics, a very enjoyable disc of soul music covers songs that showed Jones continuing to bring it as a vocalist. He returned  in 2018 on a beautiful duet with Regina Belle, "Love By Design," that won the SoulTracks Readers' Choice Award for Song of the Year. Glenn Jones continues to record from time to time, and regularly performs in multi-artist shows around the world, continuing to sound great.

Banged Up...
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (26th-30th April 2021)
There were difficult times for John Paul this week when he discovered that George had been murdered, and he was just as upset as he had been on the previous two occasions that news of George’s death had been shared with him. Having hit George shortly before his death, John Paul feared that he had been responsible and went to tell the police. John Paul told DS Cohen that George had been violent towards him and he had struck out in self defence, however, it was clear that his story was not being believed. DS Cohen later got the results of George’s post mortem back and they revealed that George had died from a blow to the head, likely coming from a missing book-end. Despite John Paul protesting his innocence, DS Cohen believed that he had killed George and charged him.
Tumblr media
Despite Verity warning him that he was too close to the case, James stepped up to represent John Paul, and advised him to plead guilty to manslaughter in the hope of receiving a reduced sentence. Meanwhile, Nancy decided to track down the real killer and she looked to have a made a breakthrough when she discovered that George’s ex, Dean, was back in town. Nancy asked to meet with Dean, planning to record a confession. Unfortunately, Dean realised what Nancy was up to, but not before admitting that he’d been in the village on the day of the murder...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Cher also found herself in the firing line for the murder when a photo of her and George arguing turned up on social media, however, the police were quick to establish the photo as a fake. Although the police were satisfied that Cher wasn’t involved, Mercedes wasn’t so convinced, and questioned whether Cher could have been responsible, pointing out that she had killed before. Mercedes later apologised to Sylver for her remarks, telling him that she thought she may be pregnant and blamed her outburst on ‘baby brain’. Later, a pregnancy test proved that Mercedes wasn’t actually pregnant and, struggling to come to terms with the news, she took a look through Gabriel’s memory box. Sensing another opportunity to be a cow, Cher stole the memory box and planned to set fire to its contents, until a chat with Liberty gave her food for thought. Cher returned the box but proved that she wasn’t done with her vendetta against her step-mother as she proceeded to hide outside the pub and play sounds of a baby crying...
Tumblr media
Elsewhere, Diane’s mental health continued to deteriorate this week and Tony was worried when he realised that she’d cancelled her scan, telling her husband she was worried about catching Covid whilst at the hospital. Maybe if the residents of Hollyoaks wore their masks correctly, there would be less Covid in the village? However, it was the electrics that were causing Diane serious worry and she called in an electrician to check things over. Despite the visit throwing up nothing of concern, Diane wasn’t convinced and attempted to climb a ladder to check on the chandelier. However, as Diane climbed, she suddenly blacked out and Tony was panic stricken when he returned to find Diane lying unconscious on the floor.
Tumblr media
In other news this week, Leah was amused to hear Sid singing a song about a mystery brunette whilst Cindy and Marnie were each convinced that had the ‘business woman of the year’ award in the bag. Finally, Shaq confessed that he was £50,000 in debt...
Tumblr media

Billboard #1s 1976
Under the cut.
Bay City Rollers – “Saturday Night” -- January 3, 1976
They prove they can spell Saturday a lot. Anyway, he's going out to dance with his girl on Saturday night. The song is bouncy to a fault -- I feel like the repetitive, samey beat is following one of those balls the mind-controlled kids bounced in A Wrinkle in Time. It sounds like a cheerleading chant. Something to do aerobics to, not to dance to.
C.W. McCall – “Convoy” -- January 10, 1976
So, besides the cb radio fad, 1976 was also the year of the OPEC oil crisis and basically, it seems the reason truckers became folk heroes evading The Man in popular consciousness had its roots in international relations. Anyway, it's a baritone story song, but about truckers instead of cowboys. I like the verse, "Well, we shot the line and we went for broke/ With a thousand screamin' trucks/ An' eleven long-haired Friends o' Jesus/ In a chartreuse micro-bus." It's a silly song with a lot of trucker lingo (or fake trucker lingo, idk), and I don't exactly dislike it, but I'm not gonna listen to it again either.
Barry Manilow – “I Write The Songs” -- January 17, 1976
It's obvious from the first lines "I've been alive forever/ And I wrote the very first songs" that Barry's not singing about himself. It turns out "music" wrote the all the songs. Except that's obnoxious too. People wrote the songs. Also possibly birds, but definitely people. And it's musical goo.
Diana Ross – “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To)” -- January 24, 1976
It's a song about regretting letting an ex go, and probably more. There's a ton of orchestration that sounds like it belongs in a lightweight movie, and Diana Ross doesn't put much emotion into it. It is a thoughtful song, rather than one calling for melodrama, but I would like to hear some emotion here, and I am not getting it. A trifle light as air.
Ohio Players – “Love Rollercoaster” -- January 31, 1976
It's a funk/disco thing. I've listened to it three times trying to get anything from it at all. The lyrics are dumb, asserting love is like this or that amusement park experience. I'd think "love rollercoaster" would be about how there are huge highs and terrifying lows, but it's not. It's horribly repetitive. I guess it's danceable. But I find it dull.
Paul Simon – “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” -- February 7, 1976
I love how pared down this song is. It's sort of funky, without all the funk orchestration. The simple drums are the main focus. The melody's also simple, without being dull. And the lyrics aren't complex; a woman is encouraging the narrator to leave his official lover for her. "Just get yourself free." But she's doing it so very nicely -- "I wish there were something I could do to make you smile again." Not that the song expects us to believe she or the narrator actually are nice. Or that it's really all that easy to leave your lover. But it doesn't tell you what to think about the situation either. An excellent song.
Rhythm Heritage – “Theme From S.W.A.T.“ -- February 28, 1976
Apparently, there was a TV show about S.W.A.T., and this was its instrumental theme song. Which is exactly what it sounds like. Not a good TV theme either. I looked up 1976 shows, and here are some shows with better TV themes from that year: Charlie's Angels, Alice, M*A*S*H, Happy Days (which surprisingly only hit #5), All in the Family, Barney Miller, Welcome Back Kotter (which hit #1 later), The Jeffersons (that Movin' On Up doesn't seem to have been a hit is shocking), The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Sanford and Son, The Bob Newhart Show... look, all of them. All shows in 1976 that I can find had better theme songs than S.W.A.T., often to a staggering degree. But songs don't reach #1 for being good. Still, usually I can hazard a reason for them. I can't for this one.
The Four Seasons – “December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)” -- March 13, 1976
It's about the narrator getting laid for the first time. He didn't even know the name of the woman, which completely undercuts anything happy or fun about this song for me, and makes it icky. At least it's not falsetto. I wasn't born when it came out, yet it was overplayed on the oldies stations in the 90s so much that I developed a deep and abiding hatred for it.
Johnnie Taylor – “Disco Lady” -- April 3, 1976
This is a song about disco that isn't a disco song. As such, it confuses me. It's kind of a mild funk/soul song, and it's about how turned on this guy is watching a woman disco. Johnnie Taylor can definitely sing, and I'd like to hear some more traditional soul/jazz stuff from him. This isn't doing it for me.
The Bellamy Brothers – “Let Your Love Flow” -- May 1, 1976
I saw the title and immediately the song shoved itself into my head. It's such a mellow song, but the hook is still monstrous. The song is about how it's the season for love, so grab your lover and "let your love flow." It's one of many 70s songs about sex that sounds like it could be a song about how pretty trees are. It kind of is about how pretty trees are too. I rather like it.
John Sebastian – “Welcome Back” -- May 8, 1976
Welcome Back, Kotter was not on Nick at Nite or WGN or anything else that ran old TV shows when I was watching TV (rather than the internet), so I've never seen it. The theme song lays it all out -- someone moves back to his old neighborhood, where they need him. As TV theme songs go, it's fine. Just fine, though. When "Movin' On Up" and "Love Is All Around" were also theme songs for TV shows in 1976, why this one? The rewards of mediocrity I guess.
The Sylvers – “Boogie Fever” -- May 15, 1976
It's literal. You come in contact with someone who can't stop boogie-ing, and you will catch the Boogie Fever yourself. Listening to the song will certainly make you want to boogie, unless you are immune. A fun dance song, and I wouldn't be surprised if Tik-Tok made it a hit again in the next year.
Wings – “Silly Love Songs” -- May 22, 1976
"Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs / What’s wrong with that?" Nothing.  Paul even emphasizes something important in it: "Love isn't silly at all." Still, I can't say it's one of my favorites. I get tired of it about halfway through, and it's a long song. A silly love song shouldn't be nearly 6 minutes long.
Diana Ross – “Love Hangover” -- May 29, 1976
It starts with Diana Ross making sex sounds that I find embarrassing. Then she goes into singing about how she doesn't want to get over "the sweetest love hangover", and a minute and a half in it becomes a disco song. I find the entire thing irritating.
Starland Vocal Band – “Afternoon Delight” -- July 10, 1976
"Afternoon delight" is sex, but these doofuses may as well be singing about tea and scones for all the excitement this song has. It still doesn't deserve the hatred it's gotten. But it's not good either. The number of sexless sex songs in the 70s is just... ugh.
The Manhattans – “Kiss And Say Goodbye” -- July 24, 1976
He has to break up with the person he's been cheating with. It's an achingly sad Philly soul song. It also manages to be way sexier than the vast majority of 70s sex songs. Real emotion (or the ability to fake real emotion) does a lot, as does being able to sing like this. And beautiful backing music. It's so sad, and so good.
Elton John & Kiki Dee – “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” -- August 7, 1976
This song isn't mutual. Elton John's the one who sings "don't go breaking my heart," and Kiki Dee's the one singing "I won't go breaking your heart." It is all and entirely and completely about the male character's feelings. Of course it's an Elton John song so I wouldn't like it anyway, but I really don't like this one, especially because it still gets airplay.
Bee Gees – “You Should Be Dancing” -- September 4, 1976
I hate the Bee Gees. Not on a personal level -- as far as I know they're perfectly decent people -- but their music. And I have a particular hatred for Barry Gibb's voice. His horrible falsetto has caused me immense pain in my life. If I should be dancing, then they need to shut up and sit down and let a band that I can dance to take the stage. As it is, I feel like a dog during the 4th of July; I just want to hide under a bed.
KC & The Sunshine Band – “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty” -- September 11, 1976
Here's a command to dance that I can get behind. Or that my behind can get behind. Again, a great song for dancing but not for listening to from KC & The Sunshine Band.
Wild Cherry – “Play That Funky Music” -- September 18, 1976
Good for both dancing and listening. How you can listen and not get into that funk groove even when sitting, though, I don't know. Play that funky music till you die.
Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band – “A Fifth Of Beethoven” -- October 9, 1976
This was the #1 hit the week I was born. It's a good one for me; it's by a guy who loved classical music enough to write contemporary music based on it. Whenever I'm faced with questions about what kind of music is my favorite, my answer is "the good kind." Anyway, this is a fun song.
Rick Dees And His Cast Of Idiots – “Disco Duck (Part 1)” -- October 16, 1976
Billboard used to base their hit songs on calling record stores and asking what was selling. I think that's how this stupid, stupid song reached number one. I think it was a prank by a bunch of stoned college kids who co-ordinated it over cb radio or something. It's about a duck. Who discos. With an obnoxious voice and obnoxious music. It's by a radio dj, and is as painfully unfunny as radio djs usually are.
Chicago – “If You Leave Me Now” -- October 23, 1976
This song makes me have a weird reaction. It gives me the warm, comfortable fuzzies, and makes me want to sleep. That last part might not be too surprising, as it is a soft song, but to me it is very much more than that. I have always had trouble sleeping at night, since birth. My parents hit on putting me into the car and driving around with soft music playing to get me to go lights out. I need to ask them if they played Chicago during that. I can't think of any other reason for my hindbrain association with this szzzzzzz....
Steve Miller Band – “Rock’n Me” -- November 6, 1976
Good bar rock, since it's the Steve Miller Band. Lyrically, it's also more complex than most of its genre. At first, he sings "I got to please my sweet baby, yeah." Then he starts singing about all the places he's been, including "Northern California where the girls are warm." And then "Babe, you know you are a friend of mine/ And you know that it's true/ That all the things that I do/ Are gonna come back to you in your sweet time." Well then. I can totally see @katatty's Duncan Huckleberry singing this song. And getting away with everything. It's a fun song, though (because?) the narrator is likely a dirtbag.
Rod Stewart – “Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright)” -- November 13, 1976
It's a sex song, and it is hugely skeevy. "Don't deny your man's desire/ You’d be a fool to stop this tide / Spread your wings and let me come inside." No, asshole, cover it up if you want to come near. And how about if you want her, you care something about her desire? This was a huge hit from a huge star, but I have never heard it until now. Ugh. I need to shower, this is gross. Also I hope whoever he's singing to is packing mace.
BEST OF 1976 -- "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." I don't even think it's an amazing song, just a very good one, but the 1976 #1s don't leave me much to work with. Fleetwood Mac released some singles, but people wanted "Disco Duck" rather than "Over My Head." Tons of great music has survived from 1976, but most of it is not on this list. WORST OF 1976 -- "Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)". "Disco Duck" is stupid, but it doesn't make my skin crawl.

The Report Card – Fantasy High Sophomore Year Ep 10
System Reboot
What is up? Happy Year of the Double Crit to everyone and welcome back to our jailbreak already in progress! To remind you of what’s happening, Fig along with Kristen and Ayda went to Calethriel Tower to bust out Adaine. While all the hirelings (except for Gilear who is with the Van he is not allowed to drive) went to destroy one pylon and the boys went to the closer pylon with a plume of smoke coming out of it.
Ayda casts invisibility on her group and flies them to the tower (guess we have us a buff wizard here).Meanwhile, in the tower, things are still going crazy. As Anguin and Kier are confused, time goes wonky and Adaine sees a rift open to a live feed of Aguefort back at his desk. When Adaine confirms that she is kidnapped and her kidnappers have decided on the  way of pain, Aguefort crawls through the rift, enlarges himself to 300 feet, declares war on Falinel, grabs the SUN out of the SKY, breathes fire, raises 1000s of Terra Cotta Aguefort warriors, and starts marching with them away from the tower.
All EXTREMELY wild things but, as you’ll notice, not things that directly get Adaine out of jail.
Adaine’s rescue party sees all of this and can generally tell this is Aguefort doing a thing that’s probably supposed to be helpful but trying to read him is always a total crapshoot. Ayda freaks a little at being in the vicinity of her dad but Fig helps to reassure her.
Back with the boys, they’re all Naruto running towards their pylon which is an elven smithy. It’s a stone building, covered in moss and, inside there are 3 braziers holding coal and 3 statues holding pitchers of water. In the center of the hexagonal room is a firepit with a helix of magic that is clearly the source of magic powering the permanent magical effects on the tower. There are channels going from the pitches to the pit in the center, not to the braziers.
On a 27, Riz sees that the braziers are super trapped with a Conjure Elemental spell. After aggressively emotionally supporting each other (“I believe in you.”), Gorgug and Fabian prepare attacks while Riz triggers the trap by shooting the mechanism since it is supposed to be triggered by a cantrip and they didn’t bring a single spellcaster. (Which was actually for strategic reasons but it sounds crazy when you actually think about it).
A fire elemental pops out but, with them getting the jump on it, they’re able to womp it with very minimal problems. Then, they break the corresponding pitcher of water so it flows into the center of the room. One down, two to go. The magic fire thing changes colors and they figure some alarm has been triggered but with all the Aguefort nonsense going on they hope it will draw the attention away from them.
They trigger the second elemental and things get a little hairier. People are on fire. It becomes very clear that not bringing a healer might have been a questionable decision. But then, lo and behold, Fabian springs into action, dancing around and putting out Riz and Gorgug when they ignite with an elven blanket which everyone knows puts out fire. He even asks to make an extra roll to do it all fancy which is something we haven’t seen from him in a while. And he rolls well!
They finish off the second elemental/statue pitcher and the indicator in the firepit is blinking. Plus, there was a flash from the other pylon earlier so they know the hirelings are doing well. That just leaves the last elemental.
Riz has the idea to put out the fire in the brazier before triggering the final trap and Fabian, citing the common knowledge that Brennan made up twenty minutes ago, says that everyone knows elven blankets put out fires. Brennan tucks himself into the bed he made for himself and has Fabian do an acrobatics check (DC 20 to not have something bad happen, DC 25 to have something good happen) and with +8 and advantage he hits a 24.
Fabian runs up to the brazier and triggers a trap that makes it erupt. The elemental bursts out and Fabian pulls it into his blanket and does one of those ballroom dancing dips. Brennan asks if he truly believes in the power of dance enough to take the damage from tangoing with this elemental. It’s Lous Wilson. What do you think he says? Fabian takes 22 points of fire damage, but holds on. It’s so beautiful that the elemental is stunned out of combat and Riz doesn’t attack it, breaking the last pitcher instead.
The elemental gains a more humanoid form and face, thanks Fabian, and kisses him for 8 points of fire damage, which he is SUPER into. As they kiss, the elemental extinguishes except for a spark that finds its way into Fabian’s chest. Wild. But that’s Spring Break bay-bee!
Now, back to the girls.
When they get to the tower, Kristen sees Kier, Anguin, and four green men-like magical constructs. Fig disguises herself to look like Aguefort (which is majorly distressing to Ayda), hoping she can do some intimidation. With the permanent magical effects on the tower down, they have no problem getting in and they clock where Adaine is being held immediately so they fly up and Fig casts Shatter. Time for Combat, part 2!
Fig Hexblades curses Anguin 100% out of solidarity/spite rather than strategy, which I respect. Anguin charms Fig to attack Ayda while still disguised as her dad which is distressing for both of them. Adaine messages Aelwyn and tells her to get ready for a rescue.
Anguin Dominate Persons Fig but Ayda dispels it so she’s back in it.
Kristen calls her grad student Spirit Guardians and Adaine, who is still super locked up and in the process of being rescued, takes the time to snark at them. Kristen and Ayda make their wisdom saves to not be forced to flee by Kier but Fig fails. Ayda dispels it with a, “Dad, don’t leave!” Yikes.
Fig hits all the green men with Burning Hands and they super don’t like that. Adaine uses her turn to send Boggy out to help Fig. Anguin tries Dominate Person on Kristen but she just makes her save.
She fires back with Blindness which Kier saves from but Anguin doesn’t. Kier tries to Banish Kristen but fails and then Ayda dispels Adaine’s orb and runs out to get Aelwyn out too. Adaine firebolts the most injured green man to death and then, in a very on brand move, almost immediately slaps her dad. Amidst all the damage, Fig asks Adaine whether she wants her dad killed or just maimed. Adaine, keeping the same energy she’s had all season, wants him dead. Fig is happy to help with the request. Kristen Banishes Kier who fails her save with a big ‘ol Nat 1. Then Ayda runs in holding a practically comatose Aelwyn.
Adaine tries to get a bead on her fleeing dad who’s gotten rid of his blindness and gone invisible (in a bitch move according to her) but she just singes the edges of his clothes. She can tell he’s probably going for the Vault downstairs. Which is why Kristen, the former chosen of Helio and current main party healer, in her infinite wisdom and with her -3 to Dex, decides to ribbon dance/rappel (????) down a ten story tower to catch him before he escapes. Brennan, decides to let the dice handle this one and she rolls a 17 minus 3 which is 14. Believe it or not, that is not enough to “use a dance ribbon to fly.” Brennan asks for another acrobatics roll (presumably to see how bad this is gonna go) and Ally, after totally Beyblading the die out of the Box of Doom, rolls a 2 minus three for a total of *Negative 1*.
Amazing.
Kristen slams into the ground, takes 36 points of damage (down to 3 hp), and snaps her ankle. She then casts Zone of Truth in case Anguin runs past her I guess. And, because she took so much damage, she loses concentration on Banishment which makes Kier reappears with the green men to attack some more. Ayda comes in clutch and, following Kristen’s lead (just not about the ribbon dancing insanity) Banishes Kier again. On her turn, Fig Dimension Doors herself and Adaine down to the Vault where all her and Aelwyn’s magic stuff is (while Ayda stays in the room, attacking green men).
Adaine finds a magical talking sword called Fandrangool which she uses as a glowstick to look around the dark vault (much to its annoyance). There’s a bit of minor retconning that happens here due to a redo roll that had to happen but I’ll spare you the backtracking and just give it to you straight. On the way out of the room, Anguin had to run past Kristen’s Spirit Guardians which made him visible. Which means he’s visible to Fig when she tries to trip him on his way to the vault (meaning no disadvantage on her roll, which succeeds) and he goes unconscious when he hits the ground.
Ayda comes into the vault to tell them they have less than a minute before Kier un-Banishes and they need to leave ASAP. Everyone makes rolls to find cool/important stuff. With a Nat 20 Arcana roll, Adaine finds her and Aelwyn’s spellbooks and the items taken from them as well as a bunch of top secret scrolls containing her mom’s research. On a 17 religion check, Kristen finds Adaine’s mom’s notes on the location of a temple in Sylvere (presumably to the Nightmare King) and, combined with what she already knows from the book in the pirate library, she knows where the temple is. On a 14 persuasion check to “make the gems dance” (idk y’all, I just record the things Emily says, I can’t explain them) she finds something about gem lore in the research and accidentally makes the tower self destruct. Oops. Ayda Invisibilizes everyone and they get OUT of there. And by “they” I mean everyone but Anguin because Adaine was serious about wanting him dead. Fig kinda wanted to keep him around to see if he could cast Planeshift but, Adaine gets the final word and the words she chooses are, “He sucks and I want him to die.”
Everyone meets back up at the Van and then they Teleport back to Fabian’s folks’ place. The elves there are very psyched to see Adaine, as a fellow elf, and her party members are even happier to see her. While talking to Telemien, they group finds out that he made the sword Adaine found and that it’s the sword of the North Star. When Gorgug suggests he should make Fabian a sword too, Adaine offers Fandrangool to him and he takes it.
Kristen pays Ayda to cast Sending to Jawbone for relationship advice. Jawbone is happy to help and agrees to find a way for them to have a longer conversation. I want to note that Kristen paid for two messages and the second just consisted of this exchange:
Kristen: Fuck yes!
Jawbone: Hell yeah.
Anyway, Fabian dances all night (sure) and Riz, Keeper of the Braincells, finds Adaine and asks what the deal with Aelwyn is since the last time the group saw her, she was super trying to kill them. Adaine gives him the short version of what happened and then Ayda comes in, carrying Aelwyn. Upon being given permission, Ayda lays Aelwyn down in Adaine’s bed and Adaine holds her. Riz reads the room and peaces out. As they trance, Aelwyn starts to regain some of her spell slots and unconsciously shields Adaine with an abjurer’s ward which is so cute and bittersweet that it nails me with 1d4 psychic damage.
From one sweet moment to another, Ayda finds Fig and they proceed to extremely frankly compliment each other. Ayda tells Fig that she’s loud, brave, funny, charming, and exciting. Fig says Ayda is direct, analytical, and has a very unique perspective. Also, she cries fire which is dope as hell. When Ayda says that she really doesn’t have any female friends her age on Crazy Pirate Island, Fig suggests she just join up with the Bad Kids and Ayda is very down. They do the slumber party thing and it’s all very cute.
After everyone else has turned in, Kristen gets a magic video-message from Aguefort who is looking messed up. Apparently, he OD’d on a bunch of experimental magic doing all the BS he did at the top of the ep, he seriously pissed off the government, and now he has to figure out how to move the sun back to where it’s supposed to be. Oh, and also Jawbone wants to speak with her.
Jawbone and Kristen have a conversation where Kristen skirts the issue of what she hid from Tracker that made her upset (because, as you remember, it’s the fact that he was cheated on). Jawbone basically says that people can usually sense when they’re being manipulated and if Kristen got Tracker flowers just to make her not be mad rather than to make her happy, then of course she’s still be pissed. He also says that full transparency is important to Tracker and if Kristen genuinely didn’t realize that because it isn’t to her then she should explain that. Kristen seems to get it and also asks Jawbone to call back the next day at the same time (probably so he can talk to Sandra-Lynn).
In the morning, Fabian has a nice chat with his granddad. He would like Fabian to get to be a chill forest elf with him but Fabian knows he has a heroic duty. He does submit to eating a flower though. Elf stuff.
Everyone meets up except for Adaine who is still with Aelwyn who is doing poorly. She brings Aelwyn to the resident healers but refuses to leave her alone. Telemein offers to take charge of Aelwyn but Adaine says it’s up to her if she wants to stay. When Aelwyn comes to, she’s not sure if they made it out of the Tower via escaping or dying. Adaine lets her know that they survived and promises to protect her while she recovers. When she sees that Aelwyn is having trouble thinking straight, she gives her Boggy to hold and ritual casts Detect Magic which pings some kind of Enchantment deep within her mind. In response, Adaine casts Detect Thoughts and finds herself in Aelwyn’s mindscape which basically looks bombed to hell like the Blitz. Her metaphorical emotional walls are represented by literal walls and battlements which have been torn up and, though they are jumbled up, Adaine can see shared childhood memories from Aelwyn’s POV. She can see that Aelwyn has spent basically their entire childhood suppressing her natural protective instincts towards Adaine out of fear of their parents and hating herself for it.
In the middle of everything, Adaine finds a really powerful magical charm made of Aelwyn's protective energy and whatever Enchantment she sensed before. Adaine can tell that this is what they were trying to torture out of Aelwyn but weren't able to. On the charm, there's writing. It says, "Despite all of the torment and tribulation, let this be proof I always knew there was only one person clever enough to find this." Adaine senses that she can dispel it and it will trigger whatever effect Aelwyn intended. Adaine does so.
“I’m going to describe something very heartbreaking now,” says Brennan, causing me to add an item to my list of “Things You Seriously Don’t Want To Hear Your DM Say.”
Adaine is snapped out of Aelwyn’s thoughts and Aelwyn is briefly overcome with pain as her mind is forcibly rewritten back to its default state by the backup copy that Adaine just triggered. That’s right. No more soft-Aelwyn. The bitch is back. Eat your Goddamn dice, Brennan.
Detention
Kristen for Whatever the Hell She Thought She Was Doing With That Ribbon
You are the PARTY HEALER and you have NEGATIVE THREE DEX. Leave the parkour shenanigans to Fabian!
This was so funny though. I think I compared the Womping of Fabian to the Keyfish thing from CritRole* but this was the actual Keyfish moment because it was super dumb, unnecessary, involved a huge fall and sketchy grasp of physics, but crucially, was hilarious and not heartbreaking.
Never change, Ally.
*lol, Now Kristen can join the club with Keyleth and Bev from Naddpod.
Honor Roll
Fabian for Getting His Groove Back
Look, I don’t think this episode is the most competent Fabian has ever been or the most heroic he’s ever been or the coolest he’s even been. But...didn’t he seem happy? And open? And a little daring? This is the most Fabian that Fabian has been since The Wicklaw Incident. He did so much support playing in this episode and it felt so right. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets his subclass back soon or picked up some battle dancer or fire stuff (or maybe something totally different), at least for flavor.
He still probably has some ways to go (“I’m not sure about myself but the two of you have got this.”) but I think he was doing so much better this ep than when this little arc of personal growth started that I have to give him props. Welcome back Fabian Aramais Seacaster!
Random Thoughts
Note: Because of this ep’s title, we now 100% know that the canon spelling of Adaine’s sister’s name is Aelwen (not -wyn) but I’ll deal with that starting with next ep because this has already taken too long to finish.
Note #2: @jamiebluewind just put up this post with various character and location descriptions you might find helpful.
OK, so are we sure the alarms triggered at the end of last episode were triggered by Aguefort? Because they went off before he actually did anything. His recording played, they pressed a button, alarms went off, and THEN he video-called Adaine. It could just be that Brennan got the order a little off after the hiatus (or that making the video-call is what caused the alarms) but I wanted to bring it up.
Why the hell was whatever the hell THAT was Arthur’s play and not Chronomancy? Like, stop time, grab Adaine, and go. Simple. I understand the reason is that he is insane and beyond human comprehension but geez (and he has to be or else he would be the ultimate deus ex machina with no reason to not solve literally every problem above a certain level of severity).
“Why would I carry my dad in this battle he never carried me.” Aydaaaaaa.
With all the fun Fabian had playing support this episode, I wouldn’t be shocked if be picked up a level of Cleric or Bard. Or even if he just got the Magic Initiate feat which could easily be explained in story as him taking an elective or working with Fig/Adaine/Kristen to learn some basics.
Ayda and Fig’s little, “Did he see me?”/“No, because your Invisibility spell was that good,” back and forth was so cute. They were super cute all episode really. People were shipping Adaine and Ayda which I personally didn’t get at all from their interactions which I found just friendly but I would be a lot less surprised if Fig and Ayda happened based on that whole pre-sleepover scene. (Based on their convo it also seems like they’re close in age but even if Ayda is like in her mid-20s or something, she’d still be Fig’s most age appropriate relationship which is, como se dice, slightly troubling). Anyway, y’all know I’m not a shipper but I’m very invested in their relationship however it ends up.
Similar topic, Fig insisting Ayda be mad at her and not her dad for attacking her while Disguised? Gah, that was so much.
Emily’s line of the episode was casually summing up her entire character by going, “I usually look like someone else but I mean what I say.”
Also, LOL at her just rocking into the fight as Aguefort playing the bass. What a visual.
Murph’s Tomb Raiding 101 bit was extremely funny.
“I would like to toss The Ball.”
Did you catch when the group realized that they left the boys with no healers and Emily was like, “Oh no, I forgot you weren't a paladin,” to Murph? I figured that was a reference to the fact that Murph’s favored archetype (in his own words) is a grizzled old knight who has to do the right thing but now I’m also lowkey wondering if he’s playing a Paladin in S5 (or maybe in their homegame).
Ayda was also very endearing towards the other girls this ep. Asking permission to grab Kristen (“Enthusiastic consent!”) and running up and grabbing Adaine’s hands after dispelling her orb. I am so glad Adaine decided to make friends with her.
Valid choice for Adaine to give the sword to Fabian but Give Adaine A Sword 2020. She should have proficiency as an elf and she needs a way to physically attack people that will do actual damage. Alternatively, Adaine should take one level in fighter or monk so the next time she slaps someone, it does actual damage.
I know Jawbone is both extremely chill and a consummate professional, but wild to talk to your girlfriend’s uncle about falling out due to him being cheated on. I for sure would have found someone else to talk to
Emily’s face when the Ribbon Dancing sequence was happening was so bugged out in disbelief which says A Lot coming from Ms. Hilda-Hilda herself.
So they fully destroyed Calethriel Tower which seems problematic seeing as there were for sure other prisoners in there. Like, even assuming all of them were peak evil and deserved to die (which seems extremely unlikely considering the people we do know who were locked up here) that still seems like a political disaster.
“Where is she on the earth? Can we teleport there?”/”She’s actually in the next room.”/ “Extremely convenient.”
Curious about when exactly Mom Abernant’s (I promise I’ll learn her name as soon as we have an official spelling I can commit to) research was taken from, her. Was she working for the government and forced to abandon it or was it taken from her while she was researching privately?
“Your modifier is bigger than their total.”
“Describe the room to me.”/”It’s a vault and it’s on the first floor.”
Adaine shows up to Telemien’s BS high elven pronunciation of Gorgug and is immediately like “There are hard G’s in high elvish.” I love her. Zero chill.
“I have it too if I sleep goodbye”
I lost my favorite sweater recently so I was vibing with Adaine’s temporary devastation at having forgotten to get her jacket (no worries, Brennan said it would have been with the rest of her stuff).
I just wanna say, wild of the elves to basically put Adaine and Aelwyn in adjacent cells.
Imagine you’re just a normal ass resident of the world of Spyre and, one day, you wake up and the sun is a huge YES! Which is super weird, even for a fantasy world but you take it in stride and, eventually, it gets sorted out. And then, six months later, it’s the middle of the day and the sun suddenly lurches across the sky and just stays there. And then you find out that the dude who did it is the same dude who kicked Sol out of the sky the last time!
I thought Fig was gonna offer Ayda access to her dads when they were talking about how Aguefort is a subpar dad because she has two. At the very least she needs to see Jawbone.
As a lawyer (#2 demographic for FH after CEO’s) I was very into the Similar to But Legally Distinct From Blitzkrieg Bop track.
“I have much more money than you.”
One of my favorite D&D tropes is the group splitting up boys/girls and then the two groups having wildly different experiences.
I think it’s interesting that everyone in Adaine’s family talks Like That except for her. Like, Aelwyn does it, even when she’s brain-fried and not being a bitch so we know it’s not just that but Adaine talks like a normal teenager like 80% of the time.
I just realized, Adaine called her shot last episode when she cursed her dad and then let him die this episode. It’s easy to be an Oracle if you follow through on all your threats.
(Also, absolutely not convinced he’s dead until we see a body. Kristen fell 10 stories this episode and she’s fine.)
I find the grudging respect that Aelwyn had for Adaine, even at her most messed up extremely interesting.
I mentioned this already in another post but, as womped as I was by Aelwyn’s personality getting reset to normal, it really was the right thing to do, storywise. Like, I’ve really been enjoying vulnerable Aelwyn but that wasn't really earned. Even she said it herself. She can’t give a full apology if she’s not in her right mind. And, in this episode, we got confirmation for what I think we all pretty much assumed. Aelwyn wasn’t just “born bad”. In fact, if anything, it’s the opposite. She was born with such strong protective instincts that the entire way she is able to use magic is based around protection. In a better world with better parents, she would have been the best most Ride or Die older sister anyone could ask for. But, instead, she was ruined in the opposite direction of Adaine and built walls to protect herself instead of others. It’s so poetic I wanna eat my dice. But, I digress. Resetting Aelwyn back to her last save file is an extremely clutch story move because it feels like back to step one but it’s not because now, Adaine fully understands what her deal is and Adaine knows she has the capacity to be good and kind and just decent. Aelwyn might have reset but Adaine didn’t. And, like, after your sister who is barely strong enough to sit upright or think straight tries to magically shield you from nothing in particular because she feels like she should, are you gonna give up on her just because she’s retreated back to the safe waters of name calling? Doubt it. I really can’t wait to see what their initial interactions are like. Is Adaine gonna treat her with kid gloves knowing what she now knows or fall back into sparring with her? Is Aelwyn gonna be totally back to her old self or will she have enough self-awareness to know that if Adaine reset her (will she know that happened?) then she must have seen inside her head and know what’s going on in there? Will she understand that but still stubbornly refuse any attempts to reach out by Adaine and try to go fully walls up again? Don’t know but I can’t wait to see how it shakes out.
But seriously. How cute was Aelwyn trying to do shields on Adaine this ep? The first time she non-grudgingly steps up to the plate to protect her for real you are gonna hate me so much because I am not going to be able to shut up about it.
One last thing: We haven’t heard from the Shadowcat in a while and that Concerns me.
This episode, Fig, Adaine, Gorgug, and Riz each rolled one Nat 20. Fig rolled one Nat 1 and Brennan rolled two.

Tumblr media
Hello I finished my July playlist a week ago but when I went to post it tumblr was down, and then I just plumb forgot! Anyway, here it is - properly sequenced this time for a very special listening experience that seamlessly delivers you from disco heaven to black metal hell and everything in between. Also I’m thinking of making these playlists a tinyletter that people can subscribe to that comes out on an actual schedule, rather than me posting them at a random time weeks after they’re finished. Is that something you’d be interested in? Who knows. Check back next month! Anyway, here goes:
listen here
Stay Away From Me - The Sylvers: You know when you’re listening to a song and the sample is super hot but the rest is just ok, so you think to yourself well why don’t I just listen to the original instead? That’s what happened to me with Final Form by Sampa The Great. That song is good but it’s also kind of not doing enough to convince me not to just listen to this super hit by The Sylvers instead. A fun thing with this song is to try to count how many instruments you can hear because it is surprisingly densely arranged for some reason. There’s a xylophone back there going off if you listen.
Sizzlin’ Hot - Paradise: The same thing happened with this song and Sizzlin’ by Daphni. I think they were going for an Armand Van Helden style distillation of the pure essence of the song, sampling the hookiest part and speeding it up and thickening up all the percussion and all that, which can work amazingly but for me it just made me want to hear the original and so I have been all month. What’s so good about being alive now is that in most cases it’s just as easy to access music from 2019 as it is to access music from 1981 where an original copy is apparently going for $1000 on discogs. Every day I thank god for inventing mp3s and putting them on the ark.
Manaos (Canzone) - Fabio Frizzi and Crossbow: I forget how I came across this, I was going through random Fabio Frizzi soundtracks for some reason. I just love the concept of a disco song about escaping from vicious assailants. Funkily singing ‘God help us, if they catch us we all are gonna die.’ as spears fly past you.
Holding On - Julio Bashmore: I think this is one of my favourite pieces of sampling ever. The way the vocals in the background are cut they don’t even sound like vocals. They just a strange contextless textural sound that works so well before eventually revealing itself as vocals in the run before the drop. It’s just so good.
Weight Watchers - Parallel Dance Ensemble: First of all I love this disgusting bass sound. It sounds like two different indistinct bass lines playing at the same time and they both drowned. I’m also mounting a change.org petition to bring back this kind of extremely naff Tone Loc flow, it rocks.
Dance - ESG: I found this incredible band while I was looking for the rapper ESG and I’m so glad I did. Their song UFO is one of those songs that’s been sampled so many times you think of it as more of a sound effect than a song, like it comes preloaded on a drum machine everyone has or something, but it’s also a good template for ESG’s sound. Every ESG song I’ve heard so far goes like this: a straightforward beat that doesn’t change for the whole song, a functional bassline that doesn’t change for the whole song, and good old fashioned simple lyrics about dancing and having a good time that sound more like schoolyard clapping games than anything. It doesn’t sound like much but over the course of an album it adds up to this incredible sort of hypnotic post-punk funk that I cannot get enough of. It sounds like kids who have 1 idea making a whole album out of it because that’s exactly what it is and it’s great!
Crave You - Flight Facilities: I love how elementally simple this song is. The vocals are hypnotising enough so everything else just quietly supports it. The only part that stands out is the thick bass synth halfway through which makes the short sax solo at the and all the sweeter, a tiny little cherry on top.
You - Delta 5: Get a load of this band bio: “Initially inspired by the success of local heroes The Mekons and Gang Of Four, Leeds, England’s Delta 5 later emerged as one of the key figures of the feminist new wave. Formed in 1979 by vocalist/guitarist Julz Sale, fretless bassist Ros Allen and bassist Bethan Peters.” Just going to gloss over them having TWO bass players before they even have a drummer?? Absolutely amazing. I love this song because it’s such a specific, targeted fury. Imagine being the loser at your girlfriend’s gig when she launched into this one for the first time. ‘who’s got homebrew with lots of sediment?’ oh fuck that’s me ‘who took me to the Windham for a big night out?’ oh fuck that’s me ‘I found out about you’ oh FUCK
Siren - Gong Gong Gong: I love the way the bass works in this, just looping and layering different variations of this noisy, stationary riff on top of itself - steadfastly staying in the exact same place the whole song and growing in power the whole time as it sits in its stubbornness.
Changes - Antonio Williams and Kerry McCoy: This came up on my Discover Weekly and I completely fell in love with it, then I realised it’s Antwan and Kerry McCoy from Deafheaven which is extremely intriguing collaboration and fell in love even more. The vocals are so good. The pure broken-hearted anguish, and the super blunt delivery that progresses to straight up yelling by the end of it combined with the Radio Dept type instrumentation is just so powerful. This feels like it’s a song that could really be a life-changing piece of catharsis for everyone in a 5k radius done live.
Fuck A War - Geto Boys: Absolutely in love with the conceit of this song: rapping a whole song down the line to the army drafter. The incredible part being of course that Bushwick Bill would be able to dodge any draft easily, being as he was both a dwarf and blind in one eye.
God Make Me Funky - The Headhunters: I found a lot of great songs going through the samples list for We Can’t Be Stopped by Geto Boys and this is one of them. I have so much love for any song that takes its time like this: nearly two minutes to set the scene and somehow taking deadly seriously the very funny lyrical idea of desperately praying to god to PLEASE make you funky.  The way this song escalates is also amazing, moving from a hot groove that sits in place to a full-on saxophone meltdown that feels like god placing his finger on your forehead and saying ‘so you want to be funky, do you?’ in a scary voice.
Use Me - Bill Withers: Fortunately and unfortunately, because of how this song was in Anchorman and because I’ve seen Anchorman one million times I can’t listen to it without hearing the noise Ron Burgundy makes when he sees Veronica in the first few seconds. Anyway, this song is so horny. The part where he has to explain to his bro how good this shit is? Doing all kinds of weird dom shit like ‘getting him in a crowd of high class people and then acting real rude to him?’ Weird. And the escalation into the claps at BABY! is amazing, he’s just going off powered by horniness and god bless him for it.
America! I’m For The Birds - Nicolas Jaar: Unbelievably, the deluxe edition of Sirens is possibly superior to the original. It’s a whole new tracklist, new songs interspersed throughout rather than the usual ‘three new songs at the end’ and it really gives it a whole new feel. This song is my favourite of the new ones and it’s a song I had in my head for a solid week. A perfect song to sing to yourself because the lyrics are so indistinct that you just end up mumbling pleasantly exactly like he is.
Cable Guy - Tierra Whack: I’m finally catching up on Tierra Whack and everyone’s right: she rocks. The sheer restraint in these songs is amazing, they just get in and out with only the good parts and no bullshit. It reminds me a lot of To The Innocent by Thingy which is one of my favourite albums for the same reason - the economy of the songwriting just serves to amplify the feeling of it. They both have this total irreverence in the lyricism where the songs are kind of about nothing but they’re so short and heartfelt that you dig for the feeling underneath it.
No Drug Like Me - Carly Rae Jepsen: I’ve previously written that what I love the most about the Carly Rae Jepsen is how horny it is and I’d like to double down on that sentiment here. I love how slow this song is, it’s the perfect tempo between danceable and ‘fucking’.
Con Calma (Remix) - Daddy Yankee, Katy Perry and Snow: I’ve been on a european holiday for most of this month and I would like to report that across Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic, France and Germany this is the absolute song of the summer. It is completely inescapable and personally I can’t get enough. Informer is one of the greatest and strangest one hit wonders of all time (it’s also canada’s highest selling reggae song of all time and Snow is thusly named because he’s white) and I’m psyched to hear it reworked by Daddy Yankee like this. Katy Perry being on the crossover attempt remix isn’t a good sign for her new album but she kills it so maybe that’s all that matters.
Chase The Devil - Max Romeo and The Upsetters: Here’s the other half of my short lived dub phase from the end of last month. This is a good example also of how completely beguiling lyrics can still be so effective. I have no idea what he means by putting on an iron shirt but it rhymes and he’s saying it with conviction so I’m nodding!
Glass - Bat For Lashes: The new Bat For Lashes songs have got me revisiting Two Suns which is an all time great five star album and this is my favourite song from it. Maybe the most powerful opening track of all time, it does as much worldbuilding as most fantasy novels do in 1000 pages. In fact almost every line in this is a viable fantasy novel title. A Thousand Crystal Towers. The Hand Of The Watchmen. A Knight In Crystal Armour. A Cape Of Rainbow. The way she sings ‘to be made of glass’ is.. incredible. I love Natasha Khan and I cannot wait to see what she does next.
Unsquare Dance - Paddy Milner: In searching spotify for other interpretations of Unsquare Dance after getting obsessed with it last month I came across this absolutely bonkers version. It’s maniacal, it feels like you would be physically and mentally drained by the end playing it because I am just listening to it. Need a little lie down.
Gimme Some Skin, My Friend - The Andrews Sisters: My girlfriend has turned me onto The Andrews Sisters lesser known hits recently and this is the best one: a song from when high fives were a novelty that those wacky blacks over in Harlem town were inventing. Extremely odd but an undeniable banger. The thing about The Andrews Sisters is one of them was an absolute force of nature as a performer and the other two were complete wet blankets and it’s kind of funny they were together as a group for their whole career because anyone with eyes can see where the real star is. The way she sings ‘baby’ at 1:25, and that whole run really, is absolutely amazing and so much better than this extremely dumb song deserves.
Kids On The Run - The Tallest Man On Earth: The piano sound alone in this is just so beautiful. This song could be about anything at all and it would still make me cry, and luckily for me: it basically is!
King Of Spain - The Tallest Man On Earth: Good song I had in my head the whole time I was in Spain. It’s incredible that his voice is so good. It feels like if it was even the tiniest bit different, slightly rougher or tinnier he would be completely hilariously unlistenable but instead he’s amazing. Plus the fact that he leans into it with the purposefully lo-fi trebly production is just so confident you can’t help but love it.
Romeo And Juliet - The Indigo Girls: A great cover I wasn’t aware of before that I heard in this great documentary Wildwood I was watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOWxnh012J0. The way she absolutely flies off the handle and nearly tears the song down around her near the last chorus is pure power and I love people who can do that in an acoustic song without it feeling overblown, just getting totally swept up in it and taking everyone along with you.
On The Bus Mall - The Decemberists: Definitely the number one song about gay teenage prostitutes who love each other and are optimistic against the odds.
White Fire - Angel Olsen: This song feels like a piece of dark magic. It feels like a 4am moment of clarity, speaking everything true in a five minute monotone and then instantly falling back to sleep with only a dim memory in the morning.
Glass Eyes -JW Ridley: JW Ridley is a genius and I cannot wait to see what he does with an album. Every song he puts out seems to be better than his last. The central melody in this is just beautiful, and the whole thing has so much space in it it feels so much longer than 3 minutes. It’s like a song you can live in.
Nullarbor - Floodlights: I love how rough this song is, and driving across australia because you’ve got nothing else going on and want to rattle your own cage is a Huge mood.
Made Too Pretty (Audiotree Live Version) - As Cities Burn: I’m so glad As Cities Burn are back, because it means they get to do good shit like this Audiotree session where they absolutely killed it.
Dirty Hearts - Dallas Crane: I think I’ve put this on a playlist before for exactly the same reason: it’s a song I wake up with in my head fairly often for some reason and it’s a very fun slice of pub rock that doesn’t overstay it’s welcome.
Ruin This Smile - The Number 12 Looks Like You: Did you know The Number 12 Looks Like You have reformed after 10 years away and haven’t missed a step at all?? I’m salivating. This song is as good as anything they’ve put out before, and feels like it fits somewhere between Mongrel and Worse Than Alone which is fantastic news for me who always loved those a lot more than their earlier more explicitly grindcore stuff.
Nutrient Painting - Yellow Eyes: A special thanks to my friend and yours Powerburial for linking this song on his twitter. There’s something about the guitars in this song, in almost every riff, where it sounds like they’re playing backwards somehow. Like the structure of the melodies is backwards. It doesn’t make sense but that’s what it sounds like to me and it’s very disconcerting.
Jejune Stars - Bright Eyes: I think this an underrated Conor Oberst era, when he became a sort of buddhist for a while and wasn’t sad anymore but just observed earth from outer space instead. I also love the instrumentation of this song, Bright Eyes and blast beats a match made in heaven. Also the strange sample about pom’granite at the end is one of my favourite things ever. A very strange album to retire the Bright Eyes name on but a very good one too.
At The Bar - Dirty Three: When I was overseas I was thinking about cultural music, and Australia’s place in the world and things like that. I ended up thinking about Dirty Three who I think along with The Drones make the most distinctly Australian sounding music to me. Just the vastness they manage to conjure from such straightforward barebones instrumentation is incredible.

Note
alright alright so, the album i wanted to suggest is
CUTIEMARKS (And The Things That Bind Us) by Vylet Pony
Tumblr media
it’s an absolutely beautiful, fun and inspiring album exploring stories in the lives of LGBT and neurodivergent people through the lens of fandom. it’s a wonderful mix of genres, and i think the most important thing i can mention about it is its passion. CUTIEMARKS is an extremely passionate and emotion-filled album, and it hits hard in a lot of ways. and i love it.
i think you’d really enjoy it, a bunch of parts remind me of your taste in music (which is super fucking dope btw)
it’s currently just available on vylet’s bandcamp, but will come to other streaming services soon!
there are a few content warnings i think need to be mentioned when discussing this album - this album deals with themes of attempted suicide, bullying and harrassment, homophobia & transphobia, abuse, and other heavy topics. despite this, it’s not a sad album. it’s an uplifting album that ultimately has its main morals in recovery and being yourself.
each track follows its own story and is memorable in it’s own way. nerdy gushing about what i personally consider the standout tracks below the cut.
THE THINGS THAT BIND US is a moody, ambient spoken-word intro track discussing the nature of cutie marks in MLP and how they determine a character’s fate. it leads directly into the next track, CUTIEMARKS, which is a heavy-hitting brostep-rock hybrid anthem about choosing your own path.
BONNIE is a cool and moody funk rock track about two women and their relationship, their feelings towards each other, and their past trauma in life.
ANTONYMPH is an upbeat anti-cringe dance pop anthem about loving yourself, loving your friends, and loving your interests, and not giving a shit what others have to say.
LESBIAN PONIES WITH WEAPONS is a sugary sweet hyperpop track that i feel is the perfect followup to ANTONYMPH, as it’s a loud, infectious earworm that basically can be summarized as “i don’t give a fuck what you think of me, i’m gonna be gay and enjoy life because life is going to shit too fast to let it consume me”.
SYNDICATE is a dark bass-heavy dubstep/d&b track about a secret organization.
I DON’T NEED TO BE FIXED is a wonderful little synthpop anthem about neurodivergent self-love, and falling in love with another neurodivergent person.
PROTAGONIST SYNDROME is a real stand-out in my opinion, just on basis of genre alone. it’s a fun latin pop / moombahton track about, as the title suggests, a person with protagonist syndrome - seeing themself as the main character in life’s story.
ISOMETRICA is an extremely dark and rage-filled industrial tune about bullying and harassment and the effects it has on one’s life.
NONEXISTENT MEET-CUTE is one of the few songs i think is best explained in the context of MLP. it’s a angry hyperpop / pop punk hybrid song about Spike, a dragon character from the series, discovering their nonbinary identity and addressing the way Rarity has treated them, how she’s taken advantage of them, and how they don’t love her anymore.
the entire album leads up to the track 37.6486° N, 122.4296° W, where Vylet and Sylver sing about a special place from their childhood - a place where velvet had her first kiss, met most of her friends, and later on, nearly committed suicide. despite this, it isn’t a sad song - it’s an uplifting song, and it means a lot to me.
can i recommend an album to you hunter
YES i love being recommended things

A little bit late for @neurodivergent-tech-week but here we go!
I wrote (and played/sang!) a song about Tech BadBatch, and all our Feelings about him! (Yes, Tech lover, This Is For You!)
It's about the gift of having such a wonderfully-written autistic hero in a big TV show, seeing him develop and shine... and then losing him (to falling into some clouds, where we can't see him), and the way it really felt like we were being led-on about a return, and just... all the pain that came with that. But ultimately like any story, he's ours, we caught him, we see him, and loving him will never be a mistake. <3
And then I made a lyric video, which I hope y'all will find snazzy. :D
Thank you so much for watching/listening/being in this fandom with me!

Evelyn Calliope and Captain Riv Maror on karaoke night, drawn by @aroaessidhe. They’re singing whatever song you need to empower you to Do The Hard Thing, or maybe just to Get By.
Evelyn, a biracial trans woman in a lesbian triad marriage, is from RoAnna Sylver’s Chameleon Moon, which incidentally is only 99¢ for the rest of June 2017. She and her wives (art link!) all have superpowers--Evelyn over sound, Rose over plants, and Danae over machinery--as does everyone else in their hometown, which is why the government put them under strict quarantine. Supplies are thin and the ground is literally on fire. But they’ll find a way to bring hope back to the world--them and their friends. There are also short stories.
Rivka is an Ashkenazi Jewish warrior woman from The Second Mango, Climbing the Date Palm, A Harvest of Ripe Figs, The Olive Conspiracy, and the Tales from Perach short stories. She’s the best friend, surrogate big sister, and royal bodyguard of the books’ Smol Lesbian Queen main character, as well as being the wife of an actual dragon. The longest story in the shorts collection, “Rivka in Port Saltspray”, is the tale of how she rescued an aro-ace damsel in distress, and she herself is demisexual.
Ev and Riv are full of hope. Ev and Riv believe in you. Ev and Riv aren’t “Not Like Other Girls” girls; they encourage and nurture the girls who are not as strong as they are.

Tumblr media
[Name]: Virginia Sylver Ash Ebonsteed
[Nickname(s)]: Gin, Ginny (only if you want to get gut punched), Crazy Bow Lady, Sylver
[Age]: 30 (birthdate November 30th)
[Species]: Afflicted Gilnean (worgen)
PERSONAL
[Religious beliefs]: Holds no strong beliefs to anything; though she does wear Light infused prayer beads on her wrist ever since her bout of fel corruption, she lost much of her faith in the Light with the fall of Gilneas.  Has fought minions of Old Gods; hears whispers of the Old Gods without fully realizing it, she chalks it up to her mental state.  Still follows some of the old ways of Gilneas (Harvest Witches, wild gods, and the like).
[Sins]: Lust / Greed* /  Gluttony / Sloth / Pride / Envy / Wrath
[Virtues]: Chastity / Charity* / Diligence / Humility / Kindness** / Patience / Justice
[Primary goals in life]: To not be her mother and punch all of the things.
[Languages known]: Common, Gilnean swearing, Draenic (with a terrible accent), Darnassian, some Thalassian, sign language, broken Orcish, and three words in Goblin.
[Secrets]: She and her captain freed prisoners of the crown while fleeing Gilneas - against direct orders.  Used to use the Azerothian equivalent of heroin pretty heavily and almost died from it; struggles with relapsing almost constantly.  Secretly loves Pandaren plum wine.
[Quirks]: Has a tendency to be very blunt, loves puns and terrible jokes (much to the chagrin of @dunnedinsniper ), very protective of those she decides are hers, and easily distracted by sharp daggers and deadly animals.
[Savvies]: Expert marksman, accomplished mercenary, decent artist, and a wonderful singer.
PHYSICAL
[Height]: 5′4 as a human, 7′2 as a worgen
[Weight]: Hovers around 130lbs in human form and 235lbs in worgen form; mostly muscle, very lean to the point of almost under fed.
[Scars/ birthmarks]: (I’m just going to link this post for those that would like an in depth description.)  Several on both forearms, bite mark on right hand, lightning burns on left side of neck, and multiple stab wounds to her torso.
[Abilities/ Powers]: She is an excellent archer, latent pyromancy abilities, able to tame some of the most fearsome of beasts.
[Restrictions]: While she carries a revolver at all times, she hates using guns, stating that they’re too loud for her liking.  Cannonfire has a tendency to give her flashbacks, tries to stay away from it as much as possible; also freaks out when touched unexpectedly.
FAVOURITES
[Drink]: Alcoholic - whiskey; non-alcoholic - water

Shooting Sylver, Singing Sami and Snooping Sinead...
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (11th - 15th February 2019)
Dear Hollyoaks. Please stop trying to make Liam Donovan happen. This week saw Liam turn in a new direction after he wound up shooting Sylver during a scuffle. At the start of the week, Liam was enjoying spending time with Mercedes but she was left spooked when she spotted a gun in the glove box of his car and told him their relationship was over. Keen to win Mercedes back, Liam headed to The Dog, armed with the gun. Although not actually intending to shoot anyone, Sylver ended up wounded when he fought with Liam. For some bizarre reason, everyone was keen to keep Liam out of the shit, so nobody called an ambulance. Instead, newcomer Mitchell, who conveniently works as a Doctor and had taken a bit of a fancy to Cleo, was called upon to help. Although initially reluctant to get involved, Mitchell agreed to help and Sylver was soon on the mend.
Tumblr media
The shock of almost losing Sylver made Mercy realise that it was him she wanted to be with and the pair quickly agreed to get married. Bad move, Sylver, given that all of Mercy’s fiances end up six feet under. There was soon more happy news for the family when Bobby was offered a place at the school for gifted children, despite Mercedes making a poor impression on the head when she accompanied her son to his interview. Meanwhile, Jesse was furious when he learned that Liam had been responsible for Sylver’s shooting and announced that he was moving out. However, he had a change of heart when Liam turned to God and vowed to change.
Tumblr media
Elsewhere, it was Laurie and Sinead’s wedding anniversary, but whilst he’d gone all out to mark the occasion, Sinead had forgotten all about it. Luckily, Tony was on hand to help, and together, he and Sinead made a cake for Laurie. However, Sinead had a feeling that something wasn’t right, and told Tony that she was worried about how much time Laurie had been spending with Sienna. When confronted with Sinead’s concerns, Laurie was furious and stormed off to Sienna’s, where she was enjoying a pizza night with Brody. Laurie was quickly invited in to join them, as was Sinead when she turned up to apologise. A game of dares ensued, resulting in Laurie daring an uncomfortable Sienna to streak round the village.
Tumblr media
By the end of the week, Sinead still couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right between Laurie and Sienna and tried to sneak a peak at his emails. When she failed to gain access on his home computer, she snuck into his office at school, where she was quickly interrupted by the arrival of Laurie and Sienna. Despite attempting to keep herself hidden, Sinead was spotted, and Laurie warned her that their marriage would be over if she didn’t start trusting him. However, it would appear Sinead was right to be suspicious, as later that day, whilst alone together, Laurie and Sienna shared a kiss...
Tumblr media
In other news this week, Nana arranged a strippers night at The Dog, with newcomer, Mitchell, arriving as the stripper. The following day, whilst at the hospital, Cleo was shocked to see Mitchell there, not realising he was actually a Doctor. Despite embarrassing him in front of his colleges, Mitchell and Cleo seemed taken with each other. Finally, Liberty unveiled Sami’s previous life as a popstar and, discovering he was popular in Japan, pointed out that he could be owed thousands in royalties.
Tumblr media
5 Things We Learned This Week:
1. Tony is an absolute nimby. Yeah, it’s great that Joel’s opened up a soup kitchen in the village, he just doesn’t want it operating outside The Hutch. Talk about lowering the tone.
2. Jesse reckons that Eva would be ashamed at what Liam has become. Would she, though? If I remember correctly, Eva was the one encouraging Liam to become a gun wielding gangster in the first place. I think she’d be fucking delighted.
3. Being shot does not require a hospital visit. Nope, the young Doctor will pay you a visit and soon all will be well. Good job Sylver didn’t need surgery or anything!
4. Sami’s popular in Japan. Well that’s nice for him, because he’s certainly not popular in Hollyoaks!

Durand Jones & The Indications Pick 15 Artists Reviving the Classic Soul Sound
Tumblr media

The soul-driven band Durand Jones & the Indications is comprised of five young men all fueled by their old, for lack of a better word, souls. Their sound and aesthetic are rooted in the golden era of groovy 70’s sonics. While they find a majority of their inspiration from artists who made it big in past decades, they are modernizing soul without surrendering the genre’s classic funk and grooviness.
Guitarist Blake Rhein explains that the band utilizes sampling mentality in the same way hip-hop producers do. They listen to music from their various inspirations and hone in on what makes the tracks feel electric. After, they experiment to recreate that magic into their own projects, like in their sophomore full length album American Love Call.
Catch Durand Jones and The Indications live on tour to support American Love Call here.
As experts in the category, we asked Durand Jones and The Indications to share a few artists who are inspiring and reviving the classic soul sound. Here are selections from Aaron Frazer (drums/vocals), Durand Jones (vocals), and Blake Rhein (guitar).

Aaron Frazer’s Picks:
1. The Moments - “Not On The Outside”
A perfect summation of the Stang label discography. 70′s vocal group where the singing is smooth, but the drums are hard. It's my ideal balance of sweet and melancholy.
2. Bob Marley & The Wailers - It Hurts to Be Alone
I was floored when I discovered this song was from The Wailers. For a while I was under the impression that it was a young Marley singing, but in fact it was the group's youngest member- 14-year-old Junior Braithwaite. The vocal performance is legendary, complemented by equally stunning guitar work. It represents this moment to me where Jamaican music was still molten, guided by stateside radio transmissions of Wendy Rene.
3. Gil Scott Heron - I Think I'll Call It Morning
Gil Scott Heron could write a scathing takedown of governmental corruption, economic inequity or substance addiction. But he was also able to be loving and tender. He was a warrior, but never lost his ability to be soft. This is one of his soft moments, and it feels radical in a time when so many of us walk around with fists perpetually clenched.
4. Foster Sylvers - Misdemeanor
Sometimes I hear soul music from before the advent of hip hop, and I marvel and just how "hip hop" some of their decisions were. I love the Jackson 5, but I'm not sure they ever got this nasty. It's one of those tracks that make your face scrunch up from the first bar.
5. The Manhattans - The Picture Became Quite Clear
George Kerr is one of the unsung heroes of soul production, and a big influence on our new record. Kerr constructed his orchestration with the precision of a watchmaker. The more you listen to this song, the more you'll notice tiny intricacies. The way the strings, vibraphone, piano, guitar, harp and background vocals dart in and out, somehow NEVER stepping on each others toes. Each turn of the arrangement leads perfectly into the next, like a beautiful soul machine.

Durand Jones’ Picks:
1. Sharon Jones - "Mama Don’t Like My Man”
Perfect ending to a beautiful album. What makes it perfect to me? The simplicity. Just guitar accompanying voices. Sharon’s vocals shine and soar, while Saun and Angee hold her down with flawless unison and harmony backgrounds.
2.  PJ Morton (feat. Pell) - “Claustrophobic"
PJ Morton brings a fresh perspective to R&B and soul music with his topics of choice and this tune is no different— he uses his gifts to sing of issues dealing with black masculinity. Too often, black men are expected to be or fit certain stereotypes to be successful. PJ let us know from the get-go that he’s not trying to fit into anyone’s small mind of what they think he should be. #blackboyjoy
3. James Blake - “Not Long Now"
My first introduction to James seven years ago. This track attracts me with its musical rawness and minimalism. I love playing this shit as loud as I can in the car, especially for the end.
4. Cheryl Lynn (feat. Luther Vandross) - "If This World Were Mine"
The blaxploitation film, ‘The Wood’ introduced this tune to a new generation of black teens and adolescents back in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Of course we heard our parents jamming this out at the cookout or in the car, but the movie added a freshness of young love to it. Something a young heart yearned for or could relate to. I recently rewatched ‘The Wood’ and forgot about the magic this tune brought to scenes. I’ve had it on repeat since.
5. Nina Simone - "Do What You Gotta Do"
The High Priestess of Soul just doing her thing. Always have been a fan of Ms. Simone, but this particular track has been on repeat for me lately.

Blake Rhein’s Picks:
1. The Whispers - "It Only Hurts For A Little While"
This is a really lovely doo-wop track from ‘64 or ‘65, long before they struck gold with "And The Beat Goes On." Their original label Dore re-released the cut on an LP 1980 with a bunch of percussion overdubbed. That's the version that's on Spotify, and I actually like it more than the original.
2. Jus’ Us - "Don't Stop Smiling"
To me, this is the definition of a soaring falsetto, especially when it gets toward the end of the track and he's really going for it.
3. Brothers Of Soul - "The Love I Found In You"
It's hard to pick a favorite from the Brothers of Soul catalog, but this one is definitely up there. There's an incredible video of the group lip-syncing to this track on a Detroit public access show in the 70s that's available on YouTube.
4. Sly Slick & Wicked - "Sho Nuff"
This is one of those songs that feels like it should be a lot more known than it is. It's undeniably catchy and the production is fantastic. Even after a prominent sample in Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie,”  the song is still pretty underground.
5. Dwight Sykes - "Walk With Me"
I always love discovering music from around my hometown. Dwight Sykes was originally from Kalamazoo, which is about an hour from where I grew up. Most of his recordings are just synths, drum machine, and vocals, which I absolutely love. However,"Walk With Me" features a full band, and I think it's his best work.
