omg hiii!! things are being quite hectic recently. i took a break from university bc my mental health has gone to shit, got diagnosed with depression and c-ptsd (duh) and currently moving out of my dorm to an apartment with another three flatmates (the rent in my city is disgustingly high)

as for my yakuza 0 progress I'm currently on chapter 7 also known as a chapter in which majima goro is going through Not Good Very Bad Time (doesn't he ever tho). loving it immensely esp the fighting and business minigames. and also substories are hilarious because. i do, too, find myself in some sort of Situations constantly so it's like. ah yeah average tuesday in kamurocho (which I've been jokingly calling the Levandovka district simulator bc this district in lviv is not exactly safe OR sane. same with Sykhiv (another remote city district) but i hate this place with a passion so i assign it the sotenbori treatment.

In Lviv, the temple of St. Prince Vladimir of the UOC was pasted over with leaflets depicting Joseph Stalin, as well as the inscription “Stalin Patriarchate”.

As indicated in the press service of the Lviv diocese, the incident happened on the night of October 20-21, 2018 in the Sykhiv microdistrict.

Into the Future of Mass Housing Estates

Any built urban conglomerate faces architectural and contextual changes. Interestingly, mass housing estates seem to be exempt from changes on larger scales. Apart from thermal rehabilitations, the actual buildings, master plans and urban contexts of mass housing estates remain mainly untouched.

Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal have been on the forefront of anopposing development that focuses on built extensions for existing mass housing schemes. Their approach for Tour Bois-le-Prêtre demonstrates that the future of mass housing lies in the continuation of building by adding new components to the current built substance. These components like loggias go beyond simple thermal rehabilitation. They form new layers within the urban conglomerate.

Architects and planners need to look beyond standard facade refurbishments. To think about the future of mass housing means to acknowledge mass housing estates as parts of the ongoing urban development and as historic context. It also means to tackle the task on a larger scale than just the façade and the building. We need to reconsider the urban aspects of these districts and what it means to shape space in modernist urban scenarios.

Consequently, it is inevitable to differ between architecturaldevelopment and urban development. Architectural developments are developments and changes regarding built substance on the scale of individual blocks or housing slabs. Urban developments summarise developments of the general layout – developments engaging with the original master plan on the scale of a district or a microrayon. The latter development is often overlooked. However, the urban layout was the major contribution of architects to mass housing estates within an epoch ecstatic about new prefabrication methods. Architects and planners have to come back to the larger scale and to developing strategies of growth and addition in form of densification within mass housing schemes. It is essential to consider housing estates as historic contexts. Like in spontaneously grown cities, housing estates also have to face a changing city fabric: the introduction of new blocks and buildings – new layers creating more diverse architectural and urban landscapes. Estates cannot be looked at as architectural set-ups immune to change and to new built substance. Each housing estate is also subject to traditional urban transformation and as a result new buildings – also new housing structures – need to be strategically added to existing mass housing districts.

Mass housing districts bear big potential. They host vast resources in vacant space. By densifying and introducing new structures to the existing schemes, the estates return to the spotlight of urban development. The architectural and urban fabric develops. New layers in form of present-day or future housing generate mass housing districts composed of elements of different epochs and eras. There is no rigid urban system. The introduction of contemporary architectural hopes and aspirations fosters the influx of inhabitants and vice versa. Large-scale processes of visible urban continuation, built additions and fabric enrichment will shift the scope back to the former pioneers of city planning.
