Grindhouse: Planet Terror & Death Proof - Almost Overwhelming
Was one of the few people to see this one in the theater the year it came out. I had a long review written at Spout.com, but it seems to have disappeared into the bowels of the website, which is too bad, I'd have liked to have seen what I thought of it initially.
Anyhow, have revisited this one on DVD several times since, both in the 'extended editions' and in the 'original release' version.I seem to remember enjoying 'Planet Terror' less on the first viewing, but on subsequent viewings I have revised that opinion and it has gone up in my estimation over time.
I remember almost walking out of 'Death Proof' on my first viewing, but by the time the movie got 'on the road' I was hooked, and by the end of the film, I was praising it as the better of the two (and also launched a quest to see most of the 'car chase movies' that it is paying homage to in the years since).
Here's what I wrote on Spout after seeing it in the theater in '07: Well, me and the wife caught this at a matinee yesterday afternoon. As with Kill Bill, I have to say, Yes yes yes - I get it. I get it already. The over the top sleaze, the scratchy old prints, the missing reels, the B-list actors turning up in both halves of a double feature (and in some of the trailers). This is what happens when film directors skip Film School and spend their formative years working in video stores seeing every piece of crap on the shelves as 'gold in the rough'.
The trailers were hilarious, Werewolf Women of the SS, Don't, Machete, etc, but most of the double feature was pure tedium. Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror' had a few moments here and there but was so over-the-top with the splattering violence that it became tiresome to watch. Don't these guys remember the fact that those old movies they are paying homage to, almost always promised a lot more than they delivered? I almost would have prefered that Planet Terror were one of the trailers and we got to see 'Machete' instead (got my wish a few years later, based on the popularity of the trailer).
Tarantino's 'Death Proof' is what I came for, and it also nearly drove me out of the theater, not from the violence, but from the sheer boredom of the first 20 minutes of the film. But once it started revving its engines, it was worth the wait. A fun classic car demolition fest that makes the 3 hour torture worth it. Here's a capsule review I wrote on Facebook on a more recent DVD viewing: First the 'Grindhouse' double feature: I seem to be one of the few people who actually saw this in the theaters. A lot of fun, and the trailers are almost as good as the movies.
Then the 'Death Proof: Special Edition': I have mixed feelings about the reissue of these as two separate movies. I do like the extended edition of the movie ('Death Proof' was my favorite of the two films, hands down), but there was something cool about the whole presentation of the original format. A wonderful homage to all those low budget car chase movies of the seventies. The first half is almost annoying as it meanders around, painstakingly introducing you to characters who won't really be around for the second half (almost a homage to Psycho, but Hitchcock had the good sense to keep it short). Then, about a third of the way through the movie, Kurt Russell gives the audience a wink as if to say "Ok, hang on to your hats, because here's where the movie really begins". Amazing stunt work by Zoe Bell in the second half, and a great car chase to rival any of those in the 'classics' of the genre.
Then the 'Planet Terror: Special Edition':Didn't like it much on my first viewing, but it has since grown in my estimation on repeat viewings. Interesting how rather than using the scratches, skips and color distortions as a mere stylistic window dressing, he uses them to heighten the suspense during action and horror sequences.
First viewing: Trailers 3.5 stars Planet Terror 2.5 stars Death Proof 4 stars
Over Time: Trailers 2 stars Planet Terror 3.5 stars Death Proof 4 stars
Released 2007, First Viewing April 2007 with several revisits of both movies
