Prestwald Hall
Hi guys!!
I'm sharing Prestwald Hall . This is the 9th building for my English Manors Collection, and I will add many more!
House History: Prestwold Hall was, for many years, the seat of the Packe family. Before that time, it was the home of the Skipwith family. After the death of Major Robert Christopher Packe (born c.1783) - one time Aide-de-camp to King George III - who was killed during the Battle of Waterloo, the hall passed to his nephew George Hussey Packe who held the hall and estate until his death in 1874.
The Hall was remodelled by architect William Burn in 1842–1844, incorporating the fabric of a mid-18th-century H-plan house. It was Grade I listed in 1951.
One of the finest rooms inside the house is the Entrance Hall with its richly coloured marbled plaster work in the Italian style. The painted ceiling was inspired by Raphael’s Vatican grotesques and incorporates miniature landscapes, showing the house before and after its remodelling between 1842 and 1844. Below the ceiling, wreathing the room, are small medallion busts of the poets from Chaucer to Scott, positioned in the spandrels and are likely inspired by Alberti's external arcade at the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini. An arcade opens on to a vaulted corridor leading to a top lit inner hall: these spaces also marbled. Off the corridor, the cantilevered stone staircase survives from the eighteenth century house, and was given its bracketed brass balusters by William Wilkins (1751-1815) in 1805.
The Dining Room, added by Wilkins in 1805, was incorporated into the remodelling undertaken by the Scottish architect William Burn in 1842. The room is overlooked by two dramatic full length portraits of Sir Edward Hussey Packe, KBE (1878 – 1946) and the Hon. Lady Mary Sydney Packe (née Colebrooke, 1890 – 1973) by the painter Glyn Philpot RA (1844 – 1947). The portrait of Lady Packe, painted in 1911, was described by the art historian Robin Gibson OBE as an ‘amazing feat of virtuosity’. Its elongated elegance and introspective characterisation is totally without the fashion-plate vulgarity of much Edwardian portraiture. Other portraits hang in this room of the Packe family including a painting of Sir Christopher Packe (1595 – 1682) who purchased the house in the 17th century painted by Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen (1593 –1661).
The library extends nearly the entire length of the house when the large doors that separate it from the drawing room are opened, connecting the two rooms. With clever use of constructional steel, William Burn was able to create these long adjoining rooms. The windows rise from floor level and open onto the garden which enhances the notion that Prestwold was designed in the style of an Italian classical villa. The doors and bookcases in library were made for George Hussey Packe (1846–1908) by Gillows of Lancaster and London in 1875.
A conservatory fills the recessed central bay at the front of the house, and projects out towards the garden. Behind the glass and elegant Doric pilasters, are well planted raised beds with a number of exotic plants and flowers

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

i feel like i'm slowly linking pretty much all of my banger shows to generational trauma (i.e bojack, succession, invincible) or some otherwise maladaptive response to the often totalitarian shaping that children who have been parasitized by vicarious idealizations suffer — however, as i've come to realize that the bear (a show i made a previous meta on when i sort of scented this notion but couldn't really articulate it), embodies this in a completely transformative way.
the bear may be about generational trauma, and though this initially sounds counterintuitive, it's not a show about carmy's generational trauma, its a show of camy's generational trauma.
the show doesn't explore the ways carmy's been wrecked, it moreso uses them to give character to his dysfunctions, to help the viewer see corporeal manifestations of the chaos brewing inside of him. the fanfare of carmy's life is the bear, its all the bombast and theatre of life's torture porn tendencies looming over his shoulder and rotting the floorboords and having its poison drip through, it's all the regrets and flashes of shame and brokenness slowly clawing through anything good in his life bc good things are brittle and unpredictable and detract from his value as a person, the utility he's found in being untouchable and cold and practically mechanical, and the way that makes one feel like all of the suffering was worth it.
it's carmy letting his internalizations of imperfection, from his family, his relationships, himself, his life, dictate what should define him. carmy circumventing feelings of helplessness with compulsive, neurotic control, aiming to undo the damage that chaos wrought through obsessive perfection.
its him eviscerating the [personal] value of his deep need and capacity for autonomy and forgiveness and peace, by reinforcing the same parasitic paternalisms he was fleeing from in the first place.
its him going from his mom to his mentor chef.
its him becoming what destroyed his chances to be human, destroyed his chances to be him. his own person, with individual purpose and intrinsic meaning and happiness.
that sort of self-dehumanization is what carmy is dripping into syd. like yes they have similarities, i'm not trying to deny that, but i feel like the 3rd season, especially the last episode, highlighted why syd x carm wouldn't be an optimal or even relevant consideration for their current dynamic, and that's bc carmen sees sydney as an extension of himself. she's all the things that validate his: maybe this is worth it, maybe i'm supposed to be a chef, its actually okay that i'm not functional bc now i get to be useful and revered and mean smth in the world and i'm no longer weak and useless deadweight.
now, now, i've proved myself, i've embodied the predetermined mould, i've surpassed it. i've become real, finally claimed autonomy.
its him seeing their similarities as reason to mould her in turn, as the only thing she needs. carmen reducing himself to apparatus and so reducing her in turn.
its a perversion of empowerment, accessing control through wielding it against others.
with syd exhibiting certain tendencies bc carmy spurs them from her. like sydcarm both having panic attacks, both being hyperfocused on stains, carmy wanting a star, not just bc syd acts as the northstar of his craft but bc he wants to prove himself. he wants to be excellent too. or them both snapping at softer, caring figures like tina when frustrated. its sydcarm degrading others under stress, sharing memories of hostile bosses, bosses who didn't appreciate them, whose mentorship was selfish with care and dignification and belief — made them feel small and claustrophobic and marginalized by one's own worst traits - by dysfunction willingly embraced.
and now you want out but you're also ambitious like syd, or proud like carmy, and its your pull to chaos vs your pull to happiness splintering you. now anything good is just a cruel fleeting thing that reminds you of what you won't let yourself have. now, people can only try reach out to the bear, coax it.
enter claire, who often gets flack for being a manic pixie dream girl and unrealistic, but when dealing with carmy, she revealed smth very primal in him, was palliating wounds he's let fester into core beliefs. like think abt it, claire is gentle, and claire treats carmen like he is gentle, fragile, she affirms his worth constantly and perpetually reassures him, whether intentional or not, claire aims to soften his wounds, aims to coax him out of his armor. she recognizes the depth residing in carmy, that the bear is equally damaged as it is brilliant, yet senses that a lot of that was mangled by malignance and flagellation. she attempts to let the bear shed his skin, remember who he is again. that someone cares abt him, both the chef and the boyfriend, the professional and the life of the party, he's allowed to have both. him the prodigy, the baby lamb. but claire spent so much time nursing the deer, by the time her own interiority could have room for growth, carmy had already cut her off, the sheep back in bear's clothing.
claire is the desperate attempt to reach someone backfiring completely, the incongruence between want and need, and how this can destroy you from the inside.
and the funny thing is that, neither claire nor the bear are carmy's actual need, when — beyond a gf not being able to fix carmy — he still kicks and screams at love and care despite desperately needing them. he's still the one who overindulged in the perfect patience of claire's love and validation, yet spurned it over how incapable and human it made him feel, still didn't want to lose control of himself, his personhood, his value.
he's still trying to imbue this same perfection into those closest to him in the kitchen, still insulating himself in that headspace, a wounded animal ensnared by a deathtrap, the bear stuck in his own freezer on his debut day.
its a trap that kills, and as carm embraces his confines, they throttle harder in turn, capturing those reaching for him in their rot.
it started with donna and passed down to carmen (who sought it in his mentor) and is dripping into syd. into richie, into claire, its carmen cultivating dysfunctions in all those beholden to him, dependent on his guidance, support or love.
its beyond generational, its a malignance, a pathogen, and although carmen may not realize how his conflation of perfection and value are lethal to him, its smth slowly killing nonetheless, mauling the warmth and love and soul of the kitchen, just as it slowly kills it in him. the bear killing the bear.

What is life like in Melbourne? I’m looking into moving there from the UK and would love some insights and whatever else from people who live and work there 💕
I've only visited the UK briefly as a tourist so I'm not sure how to compare them in a way that's going to give you useful info. But I'll give you info at least. Please sit comfortably and we'll begin.
Melbourne has 5 million people in it, but is also quite a large sprawling urban area, so it doesn't feel really packed and busy. It sits on a bay, so it doesn't get freezing but does have the '4 seasons in one day' jokes which are true. I never really got in the habit of checking the weather in the morn before I left for work until I moved away from melb where the forecast was such that I could dress appropriately without surprise.
When I talk about what I love about Melbourne I mean inner suburbs and CBD (which is a beautiful grid and shining example of urban planning for the now that is weighed down by no plans for the future). Public transport connectivity is decent (comparable to London imo) but wait times, delays, and travel times on trams and buses might be relatively crap depending on your experience. It's no Moscow metro (my beloved), but you can probably get to where you're going somehow. Also e scooters have popped off. Further out there's no trams and there's more big gaps between train stations (the train lines are arranged like spokes of a wheel around a central city circle. There will be another city loop slightly overlapping the current one in service next year). This is what I despairingly call The Suburbs. Where you probably need a car to get around and it's like at least 20 mins drive to Anywhere for dinner, groceries or fun activities. Mostly Melbourne is not overly hilly so bikes are an option but infrastructure such as bike lanes is really hit or miss depending on area. Especially good in the inner north. Melb inner suburbs are very walkable and I love love love that. I lived in the inner north and could walk into the CBD to do whatever.
In terms of culture things I think Melbourne is the most international of Aus's capitals in that it has a lot of different people but also that there's a lot open late. Sydney probably can and will make the same claim. But that's it. The rest of Aus is a country town. Major shops will probably close 5.30 or six mon to wed but there's plenty of stuff that's open later. You can always find a bar* or 8. There's plenty of different cuisines in gourmet or fast food dining. There's a cafe in the CBD that's open 24 hours where I can sit outside and have a pot of green tea WHENEVER I WANT. Bookstores open til 10pm. There are lots of events throughout the year and lots of cultural institutions to visit on a whim for free! Some are paid also obvi but I find it difficult to be bored when I can go to the museum to see taxidermy or the NGV for art for free whenever. I am a zoo member which means I get to hang out in a beautiful park/garden which creatures for free whenever I want. Again as you go out further this becomes less true. Fringe cities at the ends of train lines are likely to have what you need to live but less fun activities less often. Not nothing though!
Melbournians really do love wearing black. Especially in winter. They also love strategic Grey. I thought people were exaggerating until I left. A head to toe black outfit is uncommon enough to be remarkable where I live now. Even in a regular boring office where people wear very muted colours I'm the only one who does it. There is no functional difference between the a mourning outfit and one of a Melbournian. it's common wear sneakers with a lot of seemingly formal or corporate outfits, but not thongs with jeans. That's some weird Sydney nonsense.
Being around the bay there's plenty of places to swim in summer! Most of the bay is bordered by beach, most famous and reachable from the city is St Kilda beach. Which is excellent and beyond reproach if you're not Australian and 'fine' if you are. Traveling down towards Mornington Peninsula they get better. 5km makes a difference to the grain of the sand. Some are more fine, can get more coarse and shelly as well. Never stony. Only a little bit of seaweed here and there.
There are parks in the heart of the city (nothing huge like Hyde though) and little wildlife corridors or reserves in most suburbs but it's not an especially Nature city. It's only one hour by train and bus or by car to the Dandenongs (a low mountain range, not to be confused with hugely underated immigrant suburb of Dandenong in melb) though which have cool temperate rainforest national park, lots of gardens (huuuuuge rhododendron garden up there), little b&bs, english style cafes (miss Marples in Olinda is the most famous) and lots of walking and biking. I say one hour but Melbourne as an area reaches right to the base of the range, which is why you can get a bus from the shops. There are national parks that are native woodland or grasslands closer to the heart of the city but these are less special to me because that's the standard nature I see every day of my life. There's a pink lake in south melb which is fun. But I love tree ferns and fresh damp dirt and the tallest flowering trees in the world!!
If you have more specific Q's feel free to ask. I am a city gal at heart but did live rurally originally and frequently do short stays (2 weeks to a month) in rural or remote areas so I am used to comparing amenities and connectivity.
*Melbourne has regular bars but also is very big on rooftop bars. Sydney has some, but other cities hear rooftop bar and think 'bar inside but with views or on top floor of building. Probably formal'. Melbourne roof top bars are on the roof. In the open air (maybe some shade sail) and it's very much a casual thing. Jugs of beer or sangria, chips, feels like a good barbeque rather than a refined cocktail bar. Those are often in basements.

Descend into the Heart of Madness
Vanessa, Gregory, and Glamrock Freddy head down below Roxy Race way together. They don't come back the same.
Time Frame: Burntrap Ending Security Breach Arc, SB Trio POV
Companion to Trade Tomorrow for Today
-------
Vanessa flicked her flashlight over the dilapidated elevator, mouth twisting to the side as the sight left her decidedly unimpressed. Glamrock Freddy stood beside her, ears bent in that way that helped him express concern while Gregory carefully examined the rusted metal control panel nearby. In the wake of their travel together, twisted metal and popped open gates lay scattered over filthy ground, piles of trash and industrial garbage heaped in place to act as makeshift walls to block the way forward.
“Well, this looks an OSHA payday if I ever saw one,” she muttered dryly and pulled her manual from her back pocket again. -She’d been doing this so often this whole night, her only comfort from everything that had been happening that had turned her world inside out and upside down and filled it with horrors.- “What’s corporate policy for dealing with this? Doubt we have enough bleach in stock to clean this mess up.”
“So, everything that’s been happening in the Pizzaplex is because of something that’s way down there?” Gregory suddenly asked, looking over at Freddy first before glancing at Vanessa, “Something that’s doing weird crap other than sucking the power out of this place?”
“The records we were able to collect all indicate the source of the power drain is located beneath Roxy Raceway,” Freddy confirmed with a nod, his voice still scratchy from the swap of his voice box with Chica’s. He gestured at the elevator, “This is one of the service elevators that descends beyond the known boundaries of the Pizzaplex. However, based on the condition of it, I do not think it will survive a return trip.”
Vanessa swallowed at his words, biting her lip as she slipped the manual away. “You’re saying… we go down this thing, we might never get back to the surface?” she asked, voice cracking a little as she gave it another sweep with her flashlight.
“Do we have time to find another one? A safer one?” Gregory asked her in return, wariness in his tone conflicting with the expression of fear and resignation in his eyes. Vanessa lifted her wrist, twisting it to check the face of her watch. The Pizzaplex officially opened to the public at 8 AM, it opened to staff and suppliers at 6 AM. With all the activity going on since the doors opened -don’t think about almost losing herself, don’t think about watching Sydney fall under whatever malevolence made itself present in the building, don’t think about the crowd of people that rushed in and immediately took to fighting the S.T.A.F.F. and animatronics with signs of experience in doing so, don’t think about the woman in the rabbit suit asking her to join her in ‘having fun’- she had lost all track of time.
7:25 AM.
“We’ve got about half an hour before general public starts showing up,” she finally answered numbly, weight settling on her shoulders and heart racing as she cast her thoughts ahead to what could happen if innocent people walked in on the nightmare taking place up above. “They walk into the place before we get network control and power back, it’s going to turn into a blood bath.”
And Sydney would be there among the remaining functional S.T.A.F.F. bots, leading the way in slaughtering those people in the name of Fazbear Entertainment for whatever schemes needed fresh souls. Her best friend….
“So we don’t have a choice but to use this one,” Gregory sighed, pulling out his own flashlight that Vanessa glanced over quickly. He shone the light out at the rest of the sub-foundation level, searching for something only he could think to look for. Movement? Aid? “Fuck my life, I guess.”
“Language,” Freddy told him in exasperation and Vanessa felt her mouth twitch into a small smile. Gregory only gave him a flat glare without any heat to it before pressing the call button to open the elevator doors. The three of them stood together in silence, tense, until the doors slid open to reveal the elevator itself, a ramshackle looking thing that didn’t inspire much trust in its security.
“We’re really doing this, aren’t we?” Vanessa murmured, shivering from a sudden chill running up her spine. So much could go wrong, and once they were down there…. What if they never saw the outside world again? She grabbed her walkie-talkie, pressed the contact on it and raised it to her mouth, “Sydney? You out there? Can you still hear me? Over.”
No response. He’d stopped responding to her, to anyone, once they were given orders to find and contain Gregory. Network control. Her own implant had been disabled by whatever Gregory had done to the system trying to trap her consciousness. Before that, she’d almost been like him, following horrible orders and likely screaming in her own head, trying to fight her own body betraying her.
“No help from your boyfriend, huh?” Gregory quipped dryly and Vanessa shot him a glare as the boy stepped into the elevator, Freddy following him with careful steps.
“Not boyfriend, best friend,” she corrected and hurried in with them. Loophole in the manual, she had to keep carrying it out. Keep people out of restricted areas; if a guest requires assistance leaving the Pizzaplex, escort until they do. In case of emergency, follow the guideline that minimizes a paper trail. Gregory wanted to leave the Pizzaplex, but refused to go out the main doors until he finished his little self-assigned mission, so Vanessa would help him until he was satisfied and willing to leave. Technically, this place couldn’t be considered restricted if it wasn’t on the official paperwork to be labeled as ‘restricted’, and an evidence trail was different from a paper trail if he spoke to cops about what he saw.
The elevator jerked, making them all freeze in sudden alarm, and then began descending, the usual music now a distorted mess of fluctuating speed and notes. Vanessa flicked her light up to the speaker, wondering if smacking it with the flashlight would count as a strike against her since the elevator wasn’t part of the official property.
“You didn’t have to come, y’know,” Gregory suddenly said, his hands clutching the flashlight he’d clearly stolen. Vanessa gave it another quick look over, zeroing in on the bird sticker plastered near the butt of the device. “You have people looking out for you, like that big guy. The Not-Boyfriend.”
“Best friend,” Vanessa corrected again and pointed at the flashlight, “And that’s his. Where’d you find it?” Gregory gave her an odd look and she shook her head, “Never mind. And I already told you, as a security guard for Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex it is my responsibility to make sure our guests have a safe and fantasy-filled time, which also includes escorting them out of the building when they want to leave.” She shifted in place in discomfort, glancing around at the flickering light of the elevator. “You want out, so I’m helping until we can get you out.”
The elevator came to a stop and the doors opened to reveal a massive tunnel leading out and away from the shaft. Twin beams of light roved over the walls of rubble and construction debris from their flashlights as guard and boy carefully stepped out of the elevator that now shuddered and went dead behind them.
“And if you’re right,” Vanessa continued in a softer tone, fearful gaze lifting to the shadows high above that blocked all view of the rest of the world, “then dealing with whatever’s down here will save Sydney too. You broke the system that was trying to get in my head. Maybe the system controlling him is down here too?”
The path was littered with construction lights, gas generators, and bright red canisters emptied of fuel. Now and then some forgotten tools and other equipment would be seen, along with what looked like dried blood spatters. Vanessa swallowed hard at the sight. Other people had been down here to clear the way, obviously, but she hadn’t considered until now what happened to those people. They had to have been silenced, otherwise she would have known about this place a lot sooner.
Did Sydney know? Was he ordered to do the silencing?
“God… what did management make you do?” she murmured and jumped with a small shriek at a sudden hiss of steam from a pipe nearby. Gregory shushed her, eyes wide with alarm. The three of them held still, listening, but the only other sounds were the plinks of pebbles and dust occasionally falling from above and striking rubble and the generators running. “Have you been turning those on?” Vanessa asked the boy.
“Yeah?” Gregory returned with a shrug, “They’re connecting to something up ahead, and it’s better to just turn them on now and see what happens than find out we needed them on when we get there and then have to come all the way back here to do it.”
“That’s dumb and lazy,” Vanessa told him flatly, folding her arms over her chest, “What if you end up powering a death machine?” Gregory waved his hands around to show off their surroundings.
“Who builds a death machine in a dump like this and hooks it up to gas generators?!” he exclaimed incredulously, “If there’s anything messed up in here that could cause death or whatever, it’s already getting power from the Pizzaplex! It won’t get anything from generators that aren’t hooked up to the power grid!”
“The logic is sound,” Freddy agreed, ears wiggling to show amusement. Vanessa looked between them and sighed. Well, at least they helped her keep her thoughts off what was happening up above.
.
Horrified was only the tip of the iceberg of emotions swirling in Vanessa’s head as she gazed up at the sign in lights, the boy and animatronic beside her also staring up at it in confusion.
Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Place.
A pizzeria? Down here? How many feet below ground was this? How did a whole building end up down here in such weirdly good condition? Did corporate know about this?
Was the Pizzaplex built above it intentionally?
“Is this where we’re supposed to go?” Gregory asked aloud, then sighed harshly, “Hey, Knife Lady! Wake up!” Vanessa shot him a look, one eyebrow raised, and quickly raised her flashlight, brandishing it like a weapon, when a plume of black smoke rose up before them.
The smoke swirled, then faded, leaving behind a woman dressed all in black, long hair decorated with a black ribbon that made it look as if she had rabbit ears. She looked beautiful, even with the right side of her face scarred, but her eyes were frighteningly inhuman, black sclera with a glowing purple pinprick of light for a pupil in her left eye. She looked down at Gregory like she was barely tolerating being around him, which made Vanessa feel suddenly irritated with her.
“Once again, my name is FuriRosa,” the woman greeted with a huff, one hand resting on her hip, “Where did you put my knife, guey?”
“And then you wonder why I call you Knife Lady,” Gregory snarked back, grabbing the bottom of his shirt and lifting it to show off a belt cinched around his stomach, a sheathed knife strapped to it. “You won’t let me use it, so I just keep it here. Happy?”
“Is that a knife?” Vanessa demanded, scowling at the weapon as Gregory pulled the shirt back down, “Why do you have a knife? That’s not allowed in the Pizzaplex! And where did you come from?” The last question was directed at the strange woman, who only sneered at her in silence. Rude.
“This is Knife Lady. She came from the knife, and I found the knife already in the Pizzaplex cuz somebody dropped it,” Gregory introduced her in a dry tone, “She’s some kind of weird ghost thing and she has fire powers and she’s kind of a bitch.”
“Language,” Freddy reprimanded again.
“That’s kind of rude to say about someone,” Vanessa pointed out, glancing over at the woman now sniffing at the air and looking very much like whatever she smelled was incredibly offensive.
“She was rude first!” Gregory protested in frustration, “She wouldn’t let me use the knife!”
“You don’t have the right to,” FuriRosa shot back and took to glaring up at the wrecked pizzeria, “This place stinks of Afton blood, even more than the other place. Their Remnant soaks here.” She lifted a hand absently, pitch black fingers posed as though they were claws. “Get me further inside. If they’re hiding within, I’ll rip them to shreds and get my revenge.”
“I told you she was a bitch,” Gregory said in stage whisper to Vanessa, one hand up to his mouth in a performative attempt to hide his words.
“Language,” Freddy repeated in the same scolding yet patient tone. He sounded almost parental, weirdly enough. Vanessa looked at each of her companions in disbelief before looking back up at the pizzeria before them.
Yeah, there was nothing in the manual about any of this. Which meant she probably wasn’t going to get any sort of compensation… drat. She let out a long, low groan of complaint before taking a step forward to enter the ruined building.
Might as well get this over with.
.
-----------------
.
She didn’t know how much time had passed since those lighthearted moments of banter. Honestly, she didn’t think she cared at this point. She felt hollowed out of everything, numb with despair.
“Vanessa? Y-you’re not dead, r-right?” Gregory’s voice sounded so small and frightened and helpless, the boy kneeling in the rubble beside her prone body. She faintly recalled Freddy laying her out on her back in as clear a patch of ground as he could. The sleeves of her uniform shirt were torn free and used to bind a couple of flat pieces of metal to her arm, a makeshift splint for her fractured limb. She didn’t know where her flashlight went, or her hat. Was that important? The thoughts drifted through her mind with no sense of priority or logic. Nothing felt important, really, not after what she’d learned from the madwoman inside the ruined pizzeria.
Was she even Vanessa? Was that truly her name? Vanessa Afton… what a sick joke.
“Vanessa? P-please, say something,” Gregory begged softly, hiccuping through the words. Drops of water hit her cheek and her lashes fluttered in response, her eyes moving at last from staring at nothing to focusing on the face of the little boy crouched over her. He was crying. He was crying and some distant instinct wanted her to wipe his tears away and tell him she was okay.
Was that truly her, or also a lie?
Gregory sniffled, his gaze searching hers for something. What was he looking for? “Mm,” he began uncertainly, his voice dropping to a whisper, “M-mom?”
Was that who she was? She couldn’t remember. Everything before she woke up in that research lab was gone, and months after she’d keep forgetting things. Those memories, they’d been taken from her. From her and from Gregory. Was she Gregory’s mom? Was Gregory even his name?
She didn’t know. She didn’t know and the guilt and despair threatened to pull her under. Even with the ruined pizzeria set ablaze, burning through whatever constructs were keeping larger rubble suspended and now threatening to spread to their little bubble of tenuous safety, she couldn’t feel anything but despair and shame.
“Officer Vanessa, please,” Freddy murmured through the scratchy voice box installed in him, “We need to get moving and find a way out of here. You need medical attention.” Her gaze moved from Gregory to the animatronic, and Vanessa searched the bear’s face for signs of humanity. He was possessed too, wasn’t he? Another discovery made in that cursed place. “Your arm is broken, you suffered an electrical shock, a head injury, and inhaled some of the smoke as we fled, which led to you passing out for a short time,” Freddy added, listing off her injuries to catch her up on what she’d missed.
She dimly remembered all that. Precious memories.
“Mom?” Gregory repeated, still sniffling as he sat back, rubbing the tears from his eyes, “Vanessa?”
“I’m okay,” she managed to get the words out at last, weak and tremulous and so, so unsure of herself. She couldn’t be ‘Mom’, not when she couldn’t remember being one. But she still felt the want to keep Gregory safe when she looked back at him, felt the urge to hug him and stop the tears, even through the thick blanket of numbness that coaxed her to give up and sink into her own mind and drown.
Gregory shook his head, lip trembling as he huddled in place. “You’re not. You’re really, really not,” he disagreed shakily and took an equally shuddering breath, “I’m not okay, either.”
She looked him over, at the new collection of scrapes and bruises littering his legs and arms and face. She should have kept him safe. If they were family, then she did a poor job of keeping him safe. The least she could do, before even thinking of letting herself fall into herself, would be to finish her job as best she can. His mission was complete, so now it was time for him to leave the premises.
“We should go,” Vanessa whispered. What time was it? Did it matter? Gregory nodded and pushed himself to his feet. She wondered if she should do the same but the problem was solved by Freddy sliding his hands under her back and legs, lifting her from the ground in a bridal carry. From where she could see, cheek pressed to his chest, Freddy’s shell had taken damage as well, deep scratches and scraped paint and part of one shoulder casing broken off completely, exposing the joint of his endoskeleton shoulder.
They started walking, Freddy and Gregory, and Vanessa listened to the heavy thumps of Freddy’s footsteps, faint vibrations moving through the shell of his chest. She could also hear her walkie-talkie crackling, Gregory speaking into it and relaying what happened in the pizzeria in between requests for help to escape this cave system.
“The people that showed up said they found and fixed another elevator for us, we just gotta find the other end of it down here,” the boy reported after a while. Vanessa lifted her head to gaze blankly down at him. He offered her a small and hopeful smile, “We’ll make it out of here… Mom.”
She wished he didn’t call her that. It wasn’t fair to them; Gregory deserved a good mom, and Vanessa couldn’t even be sure of her own identity. Not anymore. Still, he didn’t have anyone, and the madwoman who stole their memories had given them both the last name of Afton in some twisted mockery of adoption into her family, so maybe she could try to be a real family member for him. Vanessa managed a small nod and Gregory brightened a little, more hopeful in his expression.
“Oh, and your Not-Boyfriend also seemed to snap out of it, but he got taken to the hospital already,” he added, shaking the walkie-talkie to keep her focus on him.
“Best friend,” she corrected. Ugh, her voice sounded so raspy and bad. Was that from the smoke inhalation? Or the dust from all the debris that collapsed in the path that led to the pizzeria?
“Whatever,” Gregory dismissed with a wave of his hand, “Point is, Circus Baby’s friends are gonna help us get out of here, and then we can get away from this place and be free.” His eyes were wide and bright as he spoke, “Just the three of us, you and me and Freddy; we’ll ditch this place and find our own one. We can have a home.”
It sounded so nice. A real home, a place to heal and start making memories again, memories that wouldn’t be stripped from her mind to keep her blank for someone else to take her over. A home where she could look after Gregory, and Freddy and Sydney could help out, and they’d all be together and happy.
She wanted so badly to be happy.
“Yeah,” she managed to say, blinking to keep her tears in so she didn’t jinx the whole thing, “Let’s get out of here, and find a home.” She reached her uninjured arm out, hand open, and gave a gentle squeeze when Gregory put his hand in hers.
Freddy didn’t say anything, but he wiggled his ears and Vanessa could almost feel the smile from the spirit within him as they moved on in search of a way up and out of the madness under the Pizzaplex.

How to Plan an Event at a Sydney Function Centre
Hosting an event at a Sydney function centre requires careful planning to ensure everything runs smoothly. Whether it's a corporate event, wedding, or milestone celebration, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you plan a successful event at a Sydney function centre.
1. Determine the Purpose and Size of Your Event
Before diving into the logistics, define the purpose of your event. Is it a corporate conference, a wedding reception, or a private party? Knowing the type of event will guide your choices for venue setup, catering, and entertainment. You should also have an estimate of the number of guests, as this will influence your choice of venue.
2. Research and Choose the Right Venue
Sydney offers a wide variety of function centres that cater to different events. When researching venues, consider:
Location: Is it easily accessible for your guests? Proximity to public transport and parking is key.
Capacity: Ensure the venue can comfortably accommodate your expected number of attendees.
Facilities: Does the venue provide audiovisual equipment, seating arrangements, and décor options?
Ambiance: Match the atmosphere of the venue with the theme of your event, whether it's modern, elegant, or casual.
Some of the popular function centres in Sydney include The Sapphire Function Centre for its versatility, elegant ambiance, and excellent service.
3. Create a Realistic Budget
Setting a budget is crucial for controlling costs. Include the following elements:
Venue hire
Catering (with options like buffets or sit-down dinners)
Event décor and theming
Entertainment or guest speakers
Event staff (if not included in the venue package)
Audiovisual equipment and technology support Allocate a little extra for unforeseen expenses and stick to the financial plan as closely as possible.
4. Book Catering Services Early
Food is often a central part of any event, and Sydney offers some of the best catering options, from traditional Australian fare to specific cuisines like Indian, Italian, or Mediterranean. Choose a catering service that aligns with the theme and budget of your event. Some venues have in-house catering, while others allow you to bring in external vendors. Be sure to arrange tastings and discuss menu preferences in advance.
5. Coordinate Audiovisual and Technical Requirements
For corporate events or presentations, make sure the Best function centre sydney has the necessary audiovisual equipment, including projectors, screens, microphones, and sound systems. For weddings or parties, consider hiring a DJ or live band. Confirm the technical setup and do a sound check before the event to avoid last-minute glitches.
6. Plan the Event Schedule
Develop a detailed timeline for your event. Include arrival times, set-up schedules, speeches, entertainment slots, and catering service times. Share this schedule with your venue and vendors to ensure everyone is on the same page and avoid any last-minute surprises.
7. Décor and Styling
Personalize the venue to match your event’s theme. Many Sydney function centres offer a blank canvas that you can style according to your preferences. Hire a decorator or use the venue’s in-house styling services for seamless coordination. From elegant floral arrangements to stunning table settings, you can create a memorable atmosphere that will impress your guests.
8. Send Out Invitations in Advance
Once the venue is booked, send out invitations well in advance, especially if the event coincides with peak seasons. You can send digital invitations for smaller gatherings or formal printed invites for weddings and corporate events. Make sure to include clear directions to the function centre and highlight any parking or transportation options.
9. Work Closely with Event Staff
Sydney function centres often provide experienced event coordinators to assist you in planning and executing the event. Communicate your vision, requirements, and preferences clearly to the event staff to ensure smooth operations on the day.
10. Confirm All Details in the Week Leading Up
A week before the event, reconfirm all arrangements with the function centre, vendors, and your team. This includes:
Final headcount
Menu choices
Technical requirements
Event timeline
Any special requests from your guests
Make sure everything is set to ensure a stress-free event.

QNews takes on Google in David and Goliath legal battle
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/qnews-takes-on-google-in-david-and-goliath-legal-battle/
QNews takes on Google in David and Goliath legal battle
QNews and independent local newspaper The Sydney Times have joined forces to take on multinational technology company Google/Alphabet Inc. over alleged anticompetitive practices in the advertising technology (ad tech) sector.
The publications are leading a class action against the global corporate behemoth in a David and Goliath battle being funded by British financial institution Woodsford and run by Australian law firm Piper Alderman.
The class action aims to recover compensation for Australian-based website and app publishers who have suffered financial losses due to Google’s alleged misuse of market power in the ad tech sector.
The legal claim centres on four Google ad tech tools: Google Ad Manager, Doubleclick for Publishers, Google Ad Exchange and Google AdSense/AdMob.
QNews publisher Richard Bakker said the class action was not just about money but also fairness in the marketplace, with Google having a stranglehold on the ad tech sector.
“I’ve decided to take on this role because Google’s dominance in the ad tech market has created an environment that’s not just unfair but also detrimental to smaller publishers and media outlets,” Bakker said.
“Their practices stifle competition and leave businesses like mine with little choice but to accept unfavourable terms,” he said.
“It’s time to level the playing field and ensure that innovation and diversity in media can thrive without being crushed under monopolistic practices.”
Bakker said there was a lack of alternatives to the ad tech “ecosystem”, meaning Google effectively controlled the ad tech space in Australia,
Sydney Times publisher Axel Ritenis agreed, calling Google “a law unto themselves” operating in a “wild west environment”.
“One of the primary problems is that Google’s functions and operations are quite opaque; there are these algorithms being used and nobody really understands how their systems work, except for them,” Ritenis told QNews.
“This class action is based on the Trade Practices Act (now known as the Competition and Consumer Act) and our objection to Google relates to fair trading, monopolisation and restraints on trade,” he said.
“Google ads are used by thousands of companies in this country, from small owner-operated businesses up to corporate entities. Because Google controls the space, people have no alternative but to use Google for their advertising.”
A corporate leviathan
As of December 2024, Google/Alphabet Inc. had a market capitalisation of AUD $3.671 trillion, making it the fifth most valuable company in the world.
Economically, the company is larger than Australia, as well as most G20 nations, with only the GDPs of the USA, China, Japan and Germany exceeding Google/Alphabet’s market capitalisation in size.
Bakker said he was not afraid of going head-to-head with one of the world’s largest corporate entities.
“Fear should not prevent us from fighting for what’s right. By coming together, we can amplify our voices and stand a better chance against monopolistic practices,” he said.
Ritner acknowledged that some publishers may be hesitant to join the class action due to Google’s power.
“A lot of publishers are intimidated and scared to take a stand. There is the potential for search traffic to be impacted. I’m not suggesting that Google would ‘punish’ them for joining the class action, but I guess that’s the concern for some publishers, as they get a lot of traffic to their sites through Google,” Ritner said.
“Google has power analogous to a government. They should not have that level of power.”
Well-established precedents
Piper Alderman partners Lillian Rizio and Greg Whyte said that while the affair seemed like a David and Goliath battle, they believed the class action had a strong chance of success, “for the simple reason of the overwhelming merit of the claim”.
“The issues it is raising have been the subject of numerous regulatory findings, both in Australia and overseas,” they said.
“The issues being raised in this case are not novel. They are well-established.”
On 4 December, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) released a statement outlining their inquiry into digital platform services in Australia and their impacts on competition and consumers.
While the QNews–Sydney Times class action is the first of its kind in Australia, Piper Alderman said it was agitating the same issues and raising the same practices as regulatory proceedings in overseas jurisdictions such as Canada and several European nations.
“We are very grateful to QNews and to The Sydney Times for stepping forward to act as lead applicants in this very important case for the publishing industry in Australia,” they said.
Where to now?
Rizio and Whyte said the class action would now proceed through court processes to trial, if it does not settle beforehand.
“We expect the litigation to be hard fought and take a couple of years before reaching a conclusion.
“The ad tech supply chain involves complicated technology and the case will undoubtedly require expert economic testimony in order to define the markets and to establish Google’s significant market power in those markets.”
Publishers wishing to join the class action can register their interest at www.googleadtechaction.com.au.

Reception signage serves as a practical guide and a reflection of your brand’s identity, professionalism, and attention to detail. 1. The Role of Reception Signage in Branding
Reception signage is more than just a functional element; it plays a vital role in establishing your brand's identity. Businesses must stand out in, where competition for attention is fierce. Well-designed signage acts as the first visual impression of your brand. Whether you’re running a corporate office, a creative studio, or a retail space, your signage needs to reflect the ethos and personality of your brand. From modern, sleek designs to more traditional, elegant displays, your signage should be a natural extension of your branding and set the tone for visitors.
2. Types of Reception Signage
Several types of reception signage are available, each offering unique benefits depending on your business needs. The most common types of signage for a reception area include:
Wall-mounted signs: A sleek, professional option that can be tailored to your branding. Materials like acrylic, timber, and metal can create a sophisticated look for your business.
3D lettering: For a more contemporary and bold statement, 3D lettering can make your signage stand out. This signage can be made from brushed metal or moulded acrylic for added texture and depth.
Digital displays: For businesses that need to communicate dynamic content or keep visitors informed, digital signage is a versatile and high-tech option. Digital screens can display everything from logos and company information to the latest updates or promotions.
3. Choosing the Right Materials for Reception Signage
Businesses often opt for high-end, durable materials with a clean and polished look. Acrylic is one of the most popular choices due to its modern aesthetic and versatility, allowing for a wide range of design options. Aluminium and stainless steel, meanwhile, provide a sleek, industrial look that can complement a more corporate or minimalist design. If your brand calls for something warmer and more inviting, timber or wood veneer finishes might be the perfect fit. Your choice of material should align with your company’s brand identity, message, and overall aesthetic.
4. Designing for Maximum Impact
When designing signage for businesses, keeping functionality and style in mind is essential. While your sign should be eye-catching and informative, it must also be easy to read and navigate. Consider font size, legibility, and how well the sign integrates with the rest of your office décor. You might also want to consider how your sign will look in different lighting conditions. Ensure that the sign is visible from various angles and well-lit so it’s easy for visitors to identify and read as soon as they walk through the door.
5. Incorporating Technology and Interactive Elements
Incorporating technology into your signage is a growing trend. Many businesses opt for digital reception displays, which can be programmed to showcase various content, such as interactive directories, client announcements, and business information. These interactive elements can provide visitors with a more engaging experience while offering up-to-date real-time information. This kind of modern approach to signage can set your business apart from others and position it as a forward-thinking company.

installation sydney artificial grass synthetic turf
Installing artificial grass, also known as synthetic turf, is a popular solution for both residential and commercial spaces in artificial grass Sydney due to its low maintenance requirements, aesthetic appeal, and durability. Whether you're transforming your home garden, business property, or even a playground, synthetic turf sydney can provide a beautiful, functional surface year-round, regardless of the weather. However, installing artificial grass requires careful planning and execution to ensure a long-lasting, professional result.
For both residential and commercial synthetic turf installation in Sydney, the first step involves thorough site preparation. This process starts with clearing the area of any existing vegetation, debris, and rocks. For residential lawns, this might involve removing old grass or weeds using hand tools like a shovel or rake, or for larger areas, equipment such as a sod cutter. It’s important to make sure the site is clear to avoid any plant material that could affect the installation of the artificial grass installation. In commercial installations, especially larger projects such as sports fields or corporate landscapes, the clearance process may require machinery like excavators or bobcats to prepare the area adequately. For spaces with significant weed growth, applying a weed killer before starting the installation can help to ensure that no unwanted plants will disrupt the turf’s integrity over time.
Once the site is cleared, the next step is to prepare the base. This is a crucial phase of the installation because the base layer serves as the foundation for the synthetic turf, ensuring proper drainage and stability. The base is typically made from crushed rock or gravel, which is spread evenly across the area and compacted to create a smooth and stable surface. The depth of the base layer should be about 3 to 4 inches, but this can vary depending on the project requirements and the type of traffic the area will experience. In residential installations, a gravel base is often sufficient, while commercial spaces, especially those with high foot traffic, may require a more robust foundation. For sports fields, a slightly more complex base may include additional layers for better drainage and impact absorption.
To ensure the artificial grass remains weed-free and stable, a geotextile fabric is then laid over the compacted base. This fabric acts as a barrier to prevent weeds from growing through the turf and disrupting its surface. The fabric should be rolled out evenly and should overlap at the edges to create a continuous layer across the site. For residential lawns, this fabric installation is relatively straightforward, whereas, for larger commercial installations, this step might involve more precision, especially for large-scale sports or event areas where long-term durability is paramount. After placing the fabric, securing it with staples or pins ensures it stays in place during the installation process.
When the base and fabric are prepared, it's time to lay the synthetic turf. Unroll the artificial grass across the area, ensuring that the fibers face in the same direction to maintain a uniform appearance. In residential settings, this process is relatively simple, especially if the area is small and the grass rolls are manageable. For larger commercial projects, the artificial grass will likely come in larger rolls or panels, requiring more workers to handle the materials. Care should be taken to ensure that the seams between multiple pieces of turf align well, as poorly aligned seams can affect both the appearance and durability of the surface. For both residential and commercial installations, it’s important to trim the edges of the turf to fit the specific shape of the area, which can include around garden beds, trees, or other obstacles. Cutting the turf is typically done with a sharp utility knife, and the edges should be cut neatly to ensure a professional finish.
The next phase of installation involves securing the turf. In residential installations, this can be done using landscape staples or nails, which are placed around the perimeter of the synthetic grass to hold it in place. The staples should be driven into the ground approximately every 4 to 6 inches, ensuring that the turf stays firmly anchored. For commercial spaces, such as sports fields or high-traffic areas, additional securing techniques may be required. This could involve using a more industrial-grade fastener or even a combination of nails and glue for extra security. In some cases, adhesive may also be used along the seams where multiple pieces of turf meet, further securing the grass and preventing any movement.
Once the turf is secured, the next step is to add infill. Infill is a layer of granular material that is spread across the surface of the artificial grass. The infill helps to weigh down the turf, providing stability and support for the fibers. It also helps to keep the blades of the synthetic grass standing upright, giving it a more natural appearance. For residential lawns, a light layer of infill is usually sufficient. However, in commercial applications such as sports fields, a thicker layer of infill may be required to provide the necessary cushioning for athletes and to ensure proper drainage. The most common infill materials are silica sand and rubber granules, but the choice of infill will depend on the specific needs of the area. For sports fields, rubber infill is often used to provide shock absorption, while silica sand is more commonly used for residential lawns due to its ability to promote better drainage.
After applying the infill, it's essential to brush the synthetic grass to distribute the material evenly and to help the grass fibers stand upright. A stiff broom or a specialized turf brush is typically used for this task. Brushing the turf also helps to remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated during the installation process. Once the infill is spread evenly and the grass is brushed, it should look lush and full, with the fibers standing tall and natural in appearance.
The final step in the installation process is a thorough cleaning and inspection. Once the turf is laid, and the infill is applied, it’s important to clean the surface to remove any debris or dust that may have collected during the installation. A leaf blower or a gentle hose spray can be used for this purpose. For residential areas, this cleaning is typically quick and easy, but for larger commercial spaces, such as event venues or sports fields, it may require a more thorough cleaning to ensure the turf is pristine. Regular maintenance, such as occasional brushing and cleaning, will help to keep the turf looking fresh and ensure its longevity.
In conclusion, the installation of artificial grass in both residential and commercial spaces in Sydney involves a series of meticulous steps, from site preparation and base installation to the laying of the turf and application of infill. Proper installation is crucial to achieving a long-lasting, attractive, and functional surface that requires minimal maintenance. Whether you're looking to enhance your home garden or create a durable surface for a commercial property, synthetic turf offers a versatile solution that will provide years of enjoyment and use. With the right materials and expert installation, artificial grass can transform any space, creating a beautiful, low-maintenance landscape.
