Fantasy Month :Sword of the Valient

So Ive been looking at diffrent stuff for Fantasy Month:Video games ,comics,Radio plays ,Cartoons ,a retrospective and even a concept album ,but I havent done the main thing I do for these motnhs :WAtch a film I havent seen before .Now some of you might be disappointed this isnt Ladhawke ,Die Nibelungen or Son of the White Mare ......But I wanted to start with a light one(Especially since the LOTR reviews are so in depth ) and Ive had this DVD for a few years now ,so lets talk about Sword of the Valaint

In this 1984 film The Green Knight (Sean Connery ) he purposes a game to the knights of King Arthur (Trevor Howard ) ,to which only a squire Gawain (Miles O Keefe) accepts ,cutting off the fey knights head only for the fella to put it back on and gives the young man a riddle to which the answer will save his life and one year to solve it.......Or his head belongs to the Green Knight

So this is a very loose adaptation of the poem Sir Gawan and the Green Knight,,,,,,,,But also its a remake,Stephen Weeks directed a film version of the poem in 1973.....And I guess ten years later he wanted to remake his own film.Now Ive actually looked at that film as well as the excellent 2021 film the Green Knight .....But while I could compare Im not going to ,I want to view the film on its own . If you want the short version ,this is better then the 73 film,but the 2021 film is better then this

As for the film itself....It is what it is ,kind of a standard sword and sorcery film.I guess I wanted a little more .I dunno I love this tale and a lot of the actors in this like John Rhyse Davies ,Peter Cushing,David Rappaport ,Douglas Wilmer and Ronald LAcey are good performers.....But other then Lacey who is the main villain ,a lot feel under used .Will say LAcey is a perfect villain,slimey and creeppy.....Though I think Lacey might be too old for the role ,cause his dad is played by John Rhyse Davies,,,,,Who Lacey is VISIBLY OLDER THEN.....By 9 years

Miles O'Keeffe is decent as Gawain and I like the idea of his journey ,but I dunno why but I dont really feel him change that much .Also the original choice was Mark Hamill,but the producers at Cannon really wanted Miles O'Keefe.....Which baffles me cause wouldnt getting HAMILL be such a coup for this film ,but who am I to argue with the guys who made superman 4

Now lets talk about our main antagonist,while most takes on the Green Knight are more neutral ,this is an antagonistic take ,An ancient and powerful fey who even Morgan Le Feys power is eclipsed by him,and he is played by Sean Connery ,one of the most beloved moviestars of the mid to late 20th century ,and the favorite actor of my grandfather ......And I am of two minds on Connery.On one hand ,I prefer the more mysterious takes by Ralph Ineson and Nigel Green ,and while those actors sort of embody and become the character,,,,,Connery is just Connery ,he is one of the most recognizable actors of his time and doesnt disappear in the role ....At the same time Connery has great screen prsence ,its fun to see Connery play not a villain but certainly an antagonist when we are so used to him in heroic roles ,I really love his costume design very elaborate but effective without being to inhuman ,and its just fun to see Sean Connery with magic powers ,

I keep flip flopping but while not a lost classic,it is fun to watch ,especially the glittery Connery .I do think it is especially an interesting watch now that the Green Knight exists

Merlin Loregasm Rewatch S1E2

Hi Everyone! Welcome to my rewatch of Merlin focusing on the lore. I am a giant nerd so pretty excited about this. Time for VALIANT!

So this brings up heraldry in the series. We see Arthur using Camelot heradlry, and other knights doing the same but during tourneys, we see Lots of different other patterned shields. So either people usually use the shield of their overlord in battle but their own in tourneys Or no knights of Camelot besides Arthur appear in tourneys. (I think Lancelot will make this a bit clearer when we get to it.) Either way either this is Valient's family crest, or he serves someone with a family crest. Either way it makes sense for why he murders this dude. As the shield is KINDA a dead giveaway to his identity. (And we know he is a knight or at least is acting as one and pulls it off better then Merlin's later first attempt at identity theft.) They obviously do not require patents of nobility at tourneys because Gwen, Arthur and Merlin pull off a fictional Knight later just fine.

I think he is likely a knight because ARMOR IS EXPENSIVE Y'ALL.

He also says he is from the Western Illes. Because the island of Mora And Ealdor this is the first place we hear about besides Camalot. Does he mean Ireland? I think he means Ireland? ALSO! are you used to my messed up grammar and punctuation yet? I have an LD in both. This is why I always need Betas for my fics despite creative writing being my thing. (I mean besides just wanting them to be better.) (This is an example of autistic oversharing. You are welcome! BACK TO MERLIN!)

So we only see this kinda sparing with Merlin in armor and holding a sword and shield once. (Usually he just holds a target for arthur) However, Merlin does get better with a sword somewhat as the series progresses so I think it likly continues. (Though perhaps a bit more nicely) It's interesting because Arthur has his pick of people to spar with, we see that later. Yet he says "Most Servants collapse after the first blow" So who is he sparing with? Has he been given manservants he didn't like before and just used this to make them quit? ANYHOO this was not as much lore so will not often comment on character dynamics but yesh.

Okay so I will spare you the talk of different armor parts. BUT this is really interesting compared to mentions of "Camalot forged steel"

See many Castles would have their own blacksmith and the one in the villager would be more for horseshoes, nails, and the like. Because armor and weapon making was A BIG DEAL

This implies Gwen's father was a HIGHLY SKILLED blacksmith who likely served the knights of Camalot. (He can't have been the only one because when he dies there is a period of time before Elyan comes and in Gwen's words Gets the forge running again.) But for a regular blacksmith to serve as an armor and weapon maker is a BIG DEAL that kinda knowledge was highly specialized! And yet Uther killed him easily.

OKAY time to nerd out a bit! This is quartering, an advanced heraldic tradition in which an individual for some reason or another wanted to show MORE than one coat of arms they were entitled to. You guys should look all this up, its fascinating! But onward!

Okay yeah remember what I said about Gwens family likely descending back to the Roman times? It's still possible but if Arab knight equivalents can get to Camelot then her family could totally have come from northern Africa for other reasons. Also I like the dude in Mauve having an Anglo-Saxon Helm and the due behind him having one from the 1100s I love Merlin's stew of things from all over history.

Okay this is perhaps just Uther being an ass. Because I'm sorry if you are not the king of Mercia I refuse to belive you are the king of Ireland. (Albion is not united yet.)

Perhaps its mostly knights of Camalot here with some exeptions? I mean if we are creative with the dude CLEARLY of the middle east we can say somehow became a noble of camalot. It would explain a few things. Did Valiant come from Ireland (Sorry I mean The Western Illes) originally then somehow for reasons we will not question also moved to Camalot? (Unlikely as Uther asks him to stay later.) There are also very few people here so likley perliminary tournaments were held? I mean we do see in Lancelot people come from all over to try to be knights of Camalot. so THEORETICLY Uther might be being honest here?

Okay this guys helm is the same as the Arab dude we saw before I think he just took his outher coat off. BUT And some of this gear is very European. So Camalot somehow has an Arab noble family that fights in ancestral gear when they can OR he got repairs along the long journey to Camalot in local styles. Take your pick!)

(You know because I can't be normal and just say they throw this in for visual appeal.)

Something to note! This would normally be the job for a Squire. A Squire was also usually the step before knighthood but in the Merlin world they do not seem to exist!

Welp. Lots happened in the past two weeks so this is gonna be longer to get through it all.

Nov 6

Finally we get to see Dave's strife animation. It wasnt what I expected but given all the context it makes sense. Dave is a bonafide fighter with 8 options with the new ones being:

Abuse - treat with cruelty

Accuse - claim someone commited offense

Assail - make a planned, violent attack

Assault - physical attack

Unfortunately, Bro slashes his options leaving Dave unable to us them. This is the first fight were we cannot do anything but watch Dave get beatdown by a puppet. Thats right, Bro isnt even seen beyond a few flashes. The main fight is with Lil Cal.

We switch over to Jade who is talking with Rose back before Rose loses power. Jade continues to be cryptic about her knowledge in the whole situation but its not too bad as weve already seen parts unfold.

We switch to Rose back in the mausoleum, grabbing Jaspers and decending into the secret passage Mom revealed.

We go back to Jade (lots of switching perspectives this day) whos finally decided to go downstairs.

Nov 8

But before she actually descends we get to see John! Very cool idea using the color reminders for transition.

John is in the middle of a fight loop with the two ogre halequins we saw scaling the platforms Rose created. There are some great movements as John powers up his pogo hammer to try and attack but unfortunately he gets beat back with the Sassacre book. From there hes flung around with the tire swing and deftly saved and healed by Nanna.

Nov 9

We jump to the far future with Peregrine Mendicant who is very surprised by the worm that appeared from the apple and vice versa. This worm decides the mailboxes are a great snack much to PMs disdain. They are fitted with a very nice black sword that does not bode well for the worm.

The gameFAQ page is updated by John. A twist but very welcome. I wonder when he had time to do so. I didnt get to fully explore the punch card code before the reveal of how it functions so I only figured out half of it (being that the code on the back was base64) while John figured out the binary part first to convert to the captcha code. For supposedly not knowing how structures work, John is surprisingly very knowledgable! Im gonna have to place John very firmly in my 'favorite characters' list. We have a lot in common honestly and Im curious on how the game will change him over time.

We are back with Rose after this who is now exploring the secret lab. Above the door is a SN logo (skaianet?) with and atom symbol on the top of the S and the spirograph on the bottom.

Nov 10-12

In the lab we find a giant HUBGRID of what I believe are server drives. The pattern of the layout is very familiar, a checkerboard devided into four parts glowing in pulsing green.

Back with Jade, we get to see some levels of the house filled with her Grandpas interests. The Harleys seem to like breaking established patterns as Grandpa does not have a single interests instead he has:

Out of these I would be happiest if he stuck with knights. On the last level is a giant worm creature which looks very similar to Johns Typheus browser.

Before we get any further to the outdoors, one of those Trollslum people finds a way to pester Jade. New character unlock? (imagine this said in the most scathing polite southern church goer accent for maximum enjoyment) CarcinoGeneticist seems like *such* a pleasant fella, they have manners but bless, they dont say much.

Truly though, whoever this is seems inordinately angry over what is happening. Who is this and why does it matter to them? Apparently they know the world is ending, believe its Jades fault, believe it was going to be so, and then fail miserably to live up to the troll name. Just calling someone stupid isnt enought to really troll someone, friend.

Going back to Rose, we use the kiosk to see the grid better with the third hub encompasing 0288-0431 is unlocked. In the center of the hub is a transportalizer, though Rose doesnt know it. Rose shows she is just as bad at modi systems as everyone else, grabbing her laptop and transporting Jaspers to who knows where. After switching to leaf instead of root, Rose finds the unlocked hub (which after counting is #0413) and plugs in her laptop which leads to some of the coolest visuals of sylladex operations as the cable connects the two cards.

At the back is a countdown (Hussie really likes countdowns) that for us starts at 3 min and 14 sec until 'unestablishment'.

Nov 13

We jump to PM who has gone through the whole rigamaroll WV did to start the timer to also start a journey to, hopefully, where WV landed. The worm was beheaded, the 'apple' is sideways, and three more worm 'legs' appear to right it before takeoff.

alternate jaune weapons

@heliosthegriffin figured i should actually discribe the weapons of other jaune's assuming they actually use them. first up is the golden blade: since he doesn't get the added speed boost and mythic feats super hero jaune does most of what he can do comes from his sword, and scabard. his scabard gives him regeneration 5 and endless so he's effectively immortal so long as no one takes it from him. his sword on the other hand is a bastard sword with impact, dueling, and valiant on it. it also counts as a rod of splendor making his charisma super human (this jaune also picked up almost exclusively charisma boosting items to help out and eventually found a tome of leadership and influence +5) all together jaune's charisma should be 41 in this au, but keep in mind that's at the end of the build. at level ten it should be more like 30. still really fucking high but that's just a headband of alluring charisma, which this jaune exclusively upgraded. this makes not only intimidation far easier but makes his civilian persona much more influential. all in all it's pretty simple but the sword does 2d8 damage every swing with an extra 1d6 if he challenged that person before hand. and a solid +4 to disarm and feinting, attempts from dueling and valient. with a +6 on defence against those same checks, and a +4 on initiative checks. keep in mind this weapon has no enhancement bonuses though.

oddly enough the sword itself can only be used by a hero. so golden blade's weapon requires he be lawful and not evil. but being heroic doesn't mean being nice and if this jaune can end a fight before it begins he'll do it

superhero jaune has the handwraps of mighty deeds. having no other weapons or bonuses he's invested a lot in these, giving them a +5 enhancement bonus and the holy and merciful traits. this means the weapons give a plus 5 to attack rolls and damage rolls and with his superhero costume (monks robes) his unarmed attacks now do 1d8+5+ 3d6 against evil creatures, (evil being selfish beings so most creatures are evil that;s just how it goes lol) and that's before adding in all of the bonuses of his build. wizzard jaune has mainly spent his money on his spells but he does have a +3 revolver with a bandolier that telliports the bullets into his gun meaning he doesn't ever have to take time to reload. he is limited to only 200 rounds at a time though. but some of them have enchanted effects on them so they can do some wacky shit. everyone else is either utterly unarmed or using common weapons/ magical bullshit to handle everything.

that good for unique weapons? i tried to limit them to only what they would invest money into and gave golden blade jaune a boost to show that he's been at this longer and has more money to throw at magical items as a result.
