LED vs HPS Grow light – Which is best for you? | ECO Farm
There are so many different lights on the market and so many different customers with unique needs.
Farmers, horticulturists, gardeners and medical marijuana growers all need different features and they have a very broad selection of options to choose from.
The first big decision is between LED grow lights and HID lights, which include HPS and MH bulbs.
LED Grow Lights
Light emitting diodes, (LED) are relatively new in the horticultural and many people are not yet familiar with their benefits and drawbacks. HID lighting has been used in the industry for decades and has been the system of choice for indoor gardeners.
There are many compelling reasons why growers are making the switch to LED technology, including:
Energy savings – LEDs use up to 40 per cent less energy than traditional HPS systems to deliver the same light levels.
Optical design freedom – LED optics offer exceptional design flexibility in terms of light level, colour spectrum and distribution pattern.
Spectral tuning – LED fixtures offer multiple colour spectral variations – each specifically designed to elicit the desired plant response – including leaf size and stem elongation, chlorophyll concentration, pigment concentration, branching and early/late flowering. Plant response times are also often faster with LEDs.
Heat management – LED fixtures produce less heat and can be placed closer to plants, enabling higher light intensities without excessive heat. Reduced heat also translates into reduced water consumption.
Long life, low maintenance – LEDs last much longer than HPS lamps, and require far less maintenance.
HPS Grow Lights
HPS, or High Pressure Sodium lights are capable of producing a huge quantity of light. In fact, a lot of farmers preferred HPS lights for years because of this. Light is crucial during the flowering stage and has been known to increase yield at harvest. The high intensity of HPS grow lights can create an ideal environment for cannabis flowering. HPS lights are also comparatively cheap to set up. However, on the flipside, the high intensity output of High Pressure Sodium lights generates a lot of heat. In many cases, using HPS grow lights requires additional ventilation for sufficient airflow. This can increase costs significantly. In addition, the high intensity light consumes a huge amount of energy, driving up costs while also causing more environmental damage.
Which Option is Better?
Should you be using HPS or LED grow lights? Both options have merit. There are pros and cons of each. However, unless you are growing in frigid temperatures, you’re better off using LED lights. There are simply more advantages. LED lights offer long-term savings, energy efficiency, and do not require extra equipment. While the upfront cost of LED lights does tend to be higher than HPS lights – you may be shocked by just how affordable high quality options have become. The market has expanded enough that you’ll find a wide variety of options available. With the long-term savings, investing in a quality LED lighting system is the way to go. Whether you need LED lights for a large-scale grow or small operation, we have something to fit your needs!
Advantages of HPS Grow Lights
HPS grow lights are capable of producing an intense amount of light, which can increase cannabis flowering.
There are a wide variety of HPS grow lights available, so options have become more standardized.
The initial start-up costs are lower with HPS grow lights than LED lights.
Drawbacks of HPS Grow Lights
HPS grow lights require more power and are less energy efficient than LED lights.
HPS grow lights have a shorter shelf life in comparison to LED lights.
The intense lighting of HPS makes adequate airflow and ventilation essential.
Setting the optimal temperature can be challenging, particularly in confined spaces.
HPS grow lights increase costs substantially in the long-term
Advantages of LED Grow Lights
LED grow lights are more energy efficient. They produce the same amount of light as HPS lights but consume substantially less energy.
LED grow lights do not produce as much heat as HPS lights, avoiding the need for additional ventilation or airflow systems.
LED grow lights are smaller than HPS lights, maximizing grow space.
LED grow lights feature an impressive shelf life.
Drawbacks of LED Grow Lights
LED grow lights require a higher upfront investment. However, they can reduce costs in the long run due to their extensive shelf life.
LED grow lights may not produce enough heat as HPS lights for colder climates
LED lights lack standardization, which makes comparing options more challenging.
However, there is a top quality and best priced LED grow lights for you!

Conclusion
Both LED grow lights and HPS grow lights are equally capable of producing great yields, and both have advantages over the other. If initial cost is not an issue, the answer to which one is better really comes down to other main factors contributing to your grow such as the growing method you plan to practice as well as the ambient conditions and size of the grow area.
In summary, whether or not an LED grow light is better than an HPS one involves a lot of factors. The debate will likely rage on for years to come, with LED growers offering up math that shows they are right, and HPS growers offering up math that says they are right, and both sides claiming that the other one is fudging the numbers. With cannabis strains and environmental factors being varied across the world, it makes matters that much harder to pin down.

Abstract
We report the detection of a planet whose orbit surrounds a pair of low-mass stars. Data from the Kepler spacecraft reveal transits of the planet across both stars, in addition to the mutual eclipses of the stars, giving precise constraints on the absolute dimensions of all three bodies. The planet is comparable to Saturn in mass and size and is on a nearly circular 229-day orbit around its two parent stars. The eclipsing stars are 20 and 69% as massive as the Sun and have an eccentric 41-day orbit. The motions of all three bodies are confined to within 0.5° of a single plane, suggesting that the planet formed within a circumbinary disk.

Yamaha DTXTREME III Special Set http://bit.ly/2xAbByg
For many years, Yamaha drums have been the first choice of the World’s most respected drummers. Now, Yamaha have combined the legendary sound of acoustic drums with our innovative technology to create the most powerful electronic percussion system ever. Ever nuance of your playing comes across, allowing you to express your creativity as never before.
Module
Yamaha enlisted the help of several of our drum artists, and looked at the requests from consumers to make sure that new module meets the needs of e-drummers at all levels. The most important feature in an electronic drum set is the sound. Yamaha began by sampling our most popular acoustic drums, the legendary Recording Custom and Maple Custom. Then Yamaha added the groundbreaking Oak Custom and industry standard Maple, Birch, and Beech Absolute. Then sampled many of their most popular artist snare drums and cymbals from all the major manufacturers. Yamaha combined these, along with samples of percussion instruments from around the world and dozens of special effects to create 50 pre-programmed kits.
When you want to customize your sound, you can take any of over 1,000 internal drum, percussion, special effects voices and loops to create up to fifty user kits. Insert a USB stick and you can save another 1,584 kits. Taking it even further, you can assign any MIDI channel to each pad, giving you access to over 200 melodic GM voices that you can trigger from any pad. With the optional DIMM, you have 512mb of sampling memory allowing an additional 1,016 user voices.
There are 15 trigger inputs, 14 of which will accept three-zone pads. Input 10/11 is able to accept two mono pads by using a stereo splitter. For live performance or recording, there is a stereo pair of outputs, or six individual outputs that also function as three stereo pair, and an S/P DIF digital output. The Aux in allows you to plug an external music source in so that you can play along, or lets you sample directly into the module. There is a full-function sample editor so that you can tweak your samples once recorded. The MIDI in/out allow connection to other devices, and the USB and TO Host terminals allow easy connection to a computer. The USB also allows use of a flash drive to store and load user created data such as kits, samples, songs, and click settings.
The DXTIII has a fully programmable metronome on board, and to take your practice to the next level our Groove Check feature shows you if you are playing ahead of, on, or behind the click. An additional feature of the click, the Rhythm Gate, mutes any hit that is not in time. The width of this gate is adjustable and can track all triggers, or your choice of up to five triggers. The Groove Check and Rhythm Gate function with either the click or the internal sequencer.
The onboard two-track sequencer is loaded with great preset songs in many styles from rock, pop, blues, funk, Latin, and jazz. The sounds are from our famous MOTIF synthesizer so they sound amazing. You can mute the drums, bass, or rhythm/melody instruments to play along, and even record your own drum track to any preset song, and you can speed up or slow the tempo without changing the pitch. There are 50 user songs that you can record your own compositions, either from the pads or with an external MIDI device. There are also 40 pad songs that you can start and stop from any pad, up to four per kit.
Hardware
The DXTIIISP includes revolutionary Hexrack featuring hexagonal tubing and tom clamps that rotate on a synthetic ball. Originally developed this rack system for use with Yamaha acoustic drums, so it is more than sturdy enough to handle duty with an electronic drum set. The clamps allow minute angle adjustments so the pad placement wherever you choose is easy. The kit also includes updated 700 series SS-740A snare stand, HS-740A hi hat stand, (1) CH-750 and (2) CH755 cymbal booms. There are five different accessory clamps and three curved rack tubes available to allow you to customize your kit.
Pads
The DTXTREMEIII Special kit includes the TP120SD three-zone snare pad, (4) TP100 three-zone tom pads, (2) PCY135 three-zone cymbal pads, (1) PCY155 three-zone ride cymbal pad, the RHH135 hi hat, and the new KP125 kick drum trigger. The snare and tom pads have the onboard controller knob that allows trigger adjustment on the fly. You can adjust snare tension, or the pitch, voice assignment, song/click tempo, filter on the snare or toms. The new cymbal pads choke when you grab the edge, respond to the lightest touch, and feel great. The RHH135 attaches to the included hi hat stand using a modified clutch. The cymbal goes up and down like an acoustic hi hat cymbal, and is pressure sensitive so the pitch changes when the pedal is pushed. The KP125 has a large playing surface that feels like an acoustic drum, and easily accommodates a double pedal. The spurs on the new kick trigger hold the pad securely in place, even under the hardest playing.

Most Protein Bars Are Worse Than Doughnuts
Dr. Mercola
It’s time to put down the protein bar you reach for after your workout or the snack bars you pick up to stave off hunger pangs in the afternoon. While manufacturers may have positioned these bars as part of the clean eating trend, most contain more sugar than a doughnut and only slightly less carbs than a Snickers bar. Many protein bars also use soy to boost the percentage of protein in their products.
While you may have heard that soy is healthy, unfermented soy products are nothing more than a clever marketing gimmick to reduce the cost of production. Soy was a minor industrial crop in the early 1900s. By 1935 Ford Motor Company was using a bushel of soybeans in every car produced to manufacture strong plastics for gear shift knobs, horn buttons and window frames.1
Today, 31 states2 produce $40 billion in soybeans each year,3 the vast majority of which is used to produce oil and soy protein that are used in the manufacture of food products.
Although these products have become a popular choice among gym goers, protein and energy bars are not the best choice and likely shouldn’t be the first choice to refuel your body after a heavy workout. In an effort to determine the nutritional benefit of protein bars available in the U.K., bespoke insurance company Protectivity developed a Fitness Food Index that identified specific nutritional markers and compared those against other bars.4
Many Bars Fail to Meet Advertising Claims
Andy Brownsell, commercial director at Protectivity, found the result surprising.5 He shared with Food Navigator that many of the bars they tested had more saturated fat and sugar than a Krispy Kreme doughnut. PowerBar’s Protein Bar 30% Lemon Cheesecake has 31 grams of protein and 20 grams of carbohydrates, 19.5 of which come from sugar.6 Maximuscle Prograin Flapjack Berry protein bar has 22 grams of protein and a whopping 41 grams of carbohydrates.
The index revealed that although product advertising indicates these bars are “healthy” and high in protein, many are also loaded with processed saturated fats, sugars and carbohydrates. In comparison, a Snickers candy bar has 4.5 grams of saturated fat, 33 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of protein packed into 250 calories.7
However, while the Snickers has more calories, it is also a larger serving size. Gram for gram, both the Luna protein bar and the Snickers bar have the same number of calories.8 Neither is a good choice to refuel.
Advertisers also claim these products help to refuel your body after a tough workout, but further independent research indicates they do not prevent an energy deficit or influence your ability to perform physical activity.9 In a study using energy bar supplementation to evaluate physical performance on 26 men eating field rations plus energy bars for eight days, the researchers found the group eating the protein-rich energy bar experienced no differences in physical performance or lean mass from those who did not eat the bars.
These nutritional challenges are being met with creative advertising campaigns that are estimated to grow the market by nearly 8 percent each year between 2017 and 2021.10 The report indicates that traditional print media and social media campaigns will be aimed at the convenience factor as more people are looking for quick, ready-to-eat food and snack options. There are literally hundreds of power/protein/energy bar options available in stores, at the gym or your local coffee shop.
Many believe that your body only requires calories to produce energy and thus these bars are acceptable nutrition options. Nancy Clark, R.D., director of nutrition services at Sports Medicine Associates in Brookline, Massachusetts, believes similarly, saying,11 "Bananas give energy. Twinkies give energy. Energy bars give energy. That's because they all provide calories."
Soy, Sugar and the Wrong Fat Equal Big Problems
Up to 95 percent of the soybeans grown in the U.S. used to produce soy isolate proteins for protein bars are grown from genetically engineered (GE) seed. This allows the farmer to routinely and liberally spray their fields with glyphosate to kill weeds without damaging the plants.
However, the soybeans also become severely contaminated with this known endocrine disruptor. Glyphosate is toxic to the placenta that delivers nutrients and removes wastes between mother and the fetus. Unfortunately, once damaged or destroyed, this can result in a miscarriage.
In a Brazilian rodent study, researchers found GE soy significantly reduced fertility.12 Soy has also been linked to erectile dysfunction. The two natural drugs found in soy, genistein and daidzein, mimic estrogen so well that they have been known to cause a variety of alarming side effects in men, including:
Breast enlargement (gynecomastia)
Decreased facial and body hair growth
Decreased libido and erectile dysfunction
Mood swings and frequent crying jags
Lowered sperm count
Soy is added to a massive number of processed foods under many different names, including any ingredient that starts with the word “soy,” as well as:13,14
Mono-diglyceride15
Bean curd
Kinnoko flour
Okara
Shoyu sauce
Soya, Soja or Yuba
Textured vegetable protein (TVP)
Textured soy protein (TSP)
Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
Lecithin
Textured soy flour (TSF)
Miso
Natto
Soy sauce
Tempeh
Tamari
Tofu
Large amounts of refined sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup are necessary additives when using soy proteins in order to disguise the taste and make the bars more palatable. This addition increases your risk for obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. In other words, while sugar and fructose have become a daily habit and are included in almost every processed food produced, they damage your health, increase your risk of disease and are responsible for diseases with a high mortality rate.
It’s Easy to Get Hooked on Ultra-Processed Foods
If you’re hooked on protein bars, candy bars and easy-to-eat convenience foods, there’s good reason. Foods that aren’t fresh from the vine, ground, bush or tree are considered processed. If they are altered, such as pasta, bread and canned or frozen products, then they are processed. However, depending on the amount of change, the processing may be significant or minimal. Ultra-processed foods have dramatically higher amounts of sugar, and typically more chemicals, than minimally processed foods.
Protein and energy bars are ultra-processed foods as they don’t look like anything grown naturally and also contain ingredients not found naturally. Research has found nearly 2 percent of calories in processed foods come from sugar, on average, while unprocessed foods contain no refined or added sugar.
Researchers who performed a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of over 9,000 participants, concluded that,16 "Decreasing the consumption of ultra-processed foods could be an effective way of reducing the excessive intake of added sugars in the USA."
Despite what industry-funded studies, industry expert advice and advertising campaigns would like you to believe, processed foods are unhealthy. Eating processed foods is associated with depression, low academic performance and behavioral problems by age 7.17,18 However, food manufacturers have carefully orchestrated flavors and sensations to be as addictive as possible.
For instance, when Yoplait yogurt was first introduced in 1999, it contained 100 percent more sugar per serving than Lucky Charms cereal. But, since most believe all yogurt to be healthy, sales soared.
Although, food manufacturers shy away from references to “addiction” when referring to their product, sugar is just as addictive as cocaine. A rodent study demonstrated that 94 percent of rats allowed to choose between sugar water and cocaine, chose sugar.19 Even the rats addicted to cocaine quickly switched their preference to sugar. According to the researchers:20
“Our findings clearly demonstrate that intense sweetness can surpass cocaine reward, even in drug-sensitized and -addicted individuals. We speculate that the addictive potential of intense sweetness results from an inborn hypersensitivity to sweet tastants. In most mammals, including rats and humans, sweet receptors evolved in ancestral environments poor in sugars and are thus not adapted to high concentrations of sweet tastants.”
In my view, eating a diet consisting of 90 percent real food and only 10 percent or less processed foods is a doable goal for most, and could make a significant difference in your weight and overall health. Unless I'm traveling, my diet is close to 100 percent real food, much of it grown on my property. One just needs to make the commitment and place a high priority on it.
Too Much Protein May Sabotage Your Health
Protein is one of the necessary building blocks in your body but, like all things, too much of a good thing is not better. Protein bars deliver between 8 and 30 grams of protein per bar. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) established by the Institute of Medicine (IOM),21 is 0.80 grams of high-quality protein per kilo (kg) of body weight (0.36 grams of protein per pound) or approximately 46 grams per day for a sedentary woman and 56 grams for a sedentary man.
Yet, most Americans eat an average of 100 grams of protein each day, nearly double the RDA.22 This means the addition of a protein bar could increase your protein intake to levels far greater than your body needs. It’s important to remember that your body has an upper limit of how much protein it can use. When you over consume protein it stimulates a pathway called the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) that plays a significant role in the development and growth of many cancer cells.
This pathway also plays a role in the aging process. This means excessive protein may increase your rate of biological aging and your risk for cancer. For optimal health, I believe most adults need about 1 gram of protein per kg of lean body mass (not total body weight), or 0.5 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass. To calculate your protein requirement, use this formula:
First determine your lean body mass by subtracting your percent body fat from 100. If you have 30 percent body fat then you have 70 percent lean body mass
Multiply this percentage (in this case 0.7) by your current weight in kilos or pounds. For example, if you weigh 170 pounds, multiply 0.7 X 170 = 119 pounds of lean body mass
Using the “0.5 grams of protein per pound” rule, 119 X 0.5 = 59.5 or just under 60 grams of protein per day
Pick a Healthy Post-Workout or Midafternoon Snack
Protein bars are advertised as convenience foods for an on-the-go lifestyle that may leave little time for cooking and sitting down to dinner. However, with very little effort you can pack your own convenience foods that are nutritious and support your health. Once you're eating unadulterated foods — foods that are as close to their natural state as possible — your body and mind will thank you. Examples of healthy snack options that will, nutritionally speaking, put your ordinary candy bar or sugary yogurt to shame, include:
Raw nuts such as macadamias and pecans
Pumpkin seeds
Avocado slices
Dehydrated veggie chips made at home
A cup of homemade bone broth
Vegetables, cooked, raw or fermented
Cheese made from raw, grass fed milk
Organic pastured boiled eggs
Yogurt or kefir made from raw organic grass fed milk
Fruits in moderation, such as mangoes, strawberries or blueberries

TEST DRIVE: 2017 BMW 118d xDrive
It’s been roughly two and a half years since I last test drove a car with a manual gearbox, and the last press car I had the pleasure of driving with three pedals was a MINI Cooper. Therefore, I was rather excited when BMW called and invited me to take a BMW 118d xDrive out for a spin for a few days. I was reticent at first but after learning about the clutch pedal, I was sold on the experience.
The BMW 118d is almost the cheapest model you can get with a blue and white roundel on the hood especially and that makes it a good candidate for fleet managers wanting to get the best bang for their buck. Furthermore, this is one of the cheapest RWD cars you can get today. Chip in the fact that you can get it with a manual gearbox and things get quite interesting if you’re looking for fun on a budget.
I personally would’ve preferred if the car was rear-wheel drive as that would’ve made the whole experience a lot more enjoyable but for some reason, most of the press cars BMW has in its fleet lately come with all-wheel drive. That said, you can still have fun and be safe during winter months if you live in colder areas, and with a set of good winter tires and some skill behind the wheel, you could still deal with snow and ice.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I found myself face to face with a diesel, RWD, manual hatch and I couldn’t wait to get behind its wheel and enjoy the times ahead. That may seem a bit weird, considering the car that stood before me, but getting to drive a manual press car is truly a rare occasion these days. That’s because most manufacturers kit their press fleet cars with all the tech they can so that the journalist behind the wheel can experience the best they have to offer. Getting to enjoy a more ‘pedestrian’ model is a relief from time to time.
In the case of the 1 Series there’s another reason why the 118d xDrive came with a manual: that’s the only gearbox available for it. What’s more interesting is that if you live in the UK, the 118d is not available with xDrive at all, so things are quite peculiar for this hatch. Therefore, you can either have a 118d RWD with a manual or automatic gearbox, or a 118d xDrive but in that case, you only get a manual gearbox.
No matter your choice, you’ll get the same 2-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine under the hood, the B47 mill being tuned to make 150 HP in 118d guise along with 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. It may not seem like a lot at first glance, especially since we’ve recently sampled the M140i by comparison, but it’s enough for your daily needs, rest assured. That’s because the 1 Series is the smallest car BMW makes today and it’s also one of the lightest. Were it not for the added 80 kilos of the xDrive system, the 5-door 118d would’ve tipped the scale at just 1,425 kg (3,141 lbs). Even so, the 150 HP drivetrain handles the 1.5-ton weight of the chassis pretty well. You won’t win many drag races but you’ll have plenty of power to do your daily chores.
From the outside, there’s nothing to set the car from the rest of the range. It didn’t stand out in the crowd whatsoever, even though it was painted in a nice shade of Mediterranean Blue and was wearing the Sport Line exterior package. The wheels were definitely a nice touch, the 17” Star-spoke 379 model with black faces and chrome spokes giving the general dark theme of the car a decent contrast. Chip in the tinted windows and you get the picture.
Inside the cabin things were just as standard, with the cloth seats and M Sport steering wheel dominating the cabin as the center points. Unlike the 2 Series, which received a new instrument cluster along with the facelift this year, the 1 Series is still using the old analogue orange cluster and that’s fine, giving you a retro feel, somehow. Alas the old iDrive system is gone and, in its place, we’re dealing with the most recent iteration of BMW’s infotainment system. It has had everything revised, from the menu and submenus to the graphics and works really well, being one of the benchmarks in the industry at the moment. On the 1 Series you don’t get a touchscreen but you don’t really need it as the rotary control knob on the center console will get the job done perfectly anyhow.
And right next to it you’ll find the gearshift lever, in this case wearing the M logo on the knob. The manual gearbox is typically Bavarian which means it’s a bit rubbery but the gates are precise and closely stuck together. Shifting gears is rather enjoyable but there’s a quirk that some people might find annoying: rev-matching. All the newest models in BMW’s range come with this function and it is probably intended more as a protection measure than a restriction on the driver but you can turn it off if you want to. Just deactivate the DSC and rev matching will be gone, it’s as simple as that. And while some have been complaining about the car automatically raising the revs as you downshift, to be honest I had nothing against it. In truth, it comes in handy and all those people claiming it’s for those who can’t drive are, in all honesty, hypocrites. It’s the same kind of argument people initially used when automatics started taking over the world. Nobody is stopping you from turning this function off.
When you take the BMW 1 Series to the limit you start to understand why it’s the best handling car in its segment. To put things in a different perspective, I should also mention that it’s the only rear-wheel drive model in the hatchback segment which makes it considerably better balanced with or without xDrive. There’s little body roll too and the suspension is perfectly damped, offering the most comfortable ride when compared to the likes of the A-Class or the Audi A3, especially when you go for the optional adaptive dampers. Our tester came with the 17” wheels and runflat tires and that took away some of the comfort but we still found the ride to be more than decent. Go for smaller wheels and maybe different tires and you probably won’t need adaptive dampers anyhow.
Switching between the three driving modes did almost nothing for the way the car handled since we’re dealing with a manual gearbox here. Sure, the steering becomes a bit heavier in Sport mode and the throttle response is a bit sharper but the differences are incredibly small or, better said, barely noticeable. In Eco Pro mode, the throttle response is toned down, allowing you to get better fuel consumption figures by helping you out with that heavy right foot.
Speaking of which, the 118d xDrive wasn’t all that impressive in terms of returned mpg around town. I guess my led foot had something to do with it but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get the fuel consumption to drop under 8 l/100 km (29.4 mpg) and that’s way off what BMW claims in the NEDC test. Outside the city limits, since there’s less variation and gear shifting, the fuel consumption came closer to the claims with the on-board computer showing 5.7 l/100 km (41.2 mpg). That’s a decent figure and it would’ve been lower if the car wasn’t all-wheel drive. Flat out, the BMW 118d xDrive is also quite quick off the line but not neck-breaking fast. It will do 62 mph from standstill in 8.4 seconds which is decent. Nobody’s going to buy this thing for drag racing anyway. On the highway, you’ll be fine as long as you don’t venture too far past the 81 mph (130 km/h) speed limit which isn’t great for your driving record anyway.
As for the practicality of the car, having so much fun behind the wheel does come with certain drawbacks. The driver’s seat is positioned low, offering a great driving position overall but not great visibility if you adjust it to the lowest position. You sit down low and the seats are comfortable and offer great side support, even though we’re not dealing with the M Sport variant here. The seats of our tester were actually textile and yet looked and felt great. If you’re on a budget, I wholeheartedly recommend skipping the Dakota leather.
There’s plenty of room up front but passengers sitting in the back might find their leg and head room quite restrictive. You definitely shouldn’t force three adults to sit abreast in the back, especially if they’re about 6-ft tall each as that could lead to all sorts of headaches. To put things better in perspective, you get a bit more room in cars like the Volkswagen Golf, Seat Leon, Audi A3 and the A-Class but that’s understandable since the 1 Series does have to make room for its longitudinally mounted engine and driveshaft sending power to the rear axle.
However, the cabin does come with plenty of storage spaces. The door bins are generous in size and there’s a lot of space in the center armrest to store various small items. With the back seats up, the boot can hold up to 390 liters of stuff which is 30 liters more than the old model. Fold the seats and that figure goes up to 1200 liters. And while those may seem like impressive figures, they’re both some 20 liters shy of what the A3 offers, for example. Furthermore, the loading aperture has a bit to suffer because of the shape of the taillights and the boot floor isn’t straight, dropping towards the back which can make loading things flush a bit of an issue.
Despite these drawbacks, the 1 Series is still the most fun to drive car in the segment. Get it with a manual gearbox and things get even better. To think that almost the entire range is available with a stick shift makes it a true driver’s car. The choice of engines is extremely varied as well, from 3-cylinder mills to the top dog M140i, every man and woman out there being able to choose their favorite easily.
As for the 118d xDrive model, it’s clearly been set up to appeal to the more frugal minds out there. It was developed to be a decent cruiser for those wanting to have a small hatch with a great feel on the road. Despite having a diesel engine under the hood, you can have plenty of fun with the 118d and, to make things even better, a small ECU tune can get the power levels up to what the 120d offers, 190 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) which is more than enough for a small hatch like this. The internals are the same under the hood and you can get a great bang for the buck this way.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the car. The diesel mill under the hood was hushed down thanks to proper sound isolation and it is well balanced, while the abundant torque band allows you to cruise around in almost any gear you wish to. Pinch the throttle and you get out of any sticky situation in a hurry while if you want to have even more fun, all you have to do is counter steer quickly to get the rear end sliding. And that, simply put, is something you just can’t do with any other hatch these days.

Yamaha DTXTREME III Special Set http://ift.tt/2xAbByg
