Kyiv-based Swiss filmmaker Marc Wilkins had been following the jazz fusion scene in Kyiv for some years before Russia's full-scale invasion. After initially being creatively paralyzed by the chaos of war, now he is determined to finish his documentary "Louder Than Bombs", which follows the lives of young musicians and how the war has led some of them to compose music on the front lines.
The musicians, affiliated with the Fusion Jams collective, put on performances while also collecting funds for Ukraine's armed forces. They've even lost one of their own, Oleksandra Kuvshynova, who was killed while working as an organizer for Fox News. Fusion Jams considers organizing these performances to raise money as a form of "artistic revenge" for their fallen friend.
The fundraiser for the documentary can be found here. As of writing this, there are 6 days left. You can also see the full teaser video there.
To learn more about Fusion James, the jazz fusion scene in Kyiv, and the documentary, check out the article below.
Amid loss and uncertainty of wartime, Kyiv’s jazz fusion scene plays on — one filmmaker wants to capture it

VA - Luke Una Presents É Soul Cultura Vol.2 - another eclectic selection, 18 tracks over a wide range of moods and rhythms
Mr Bongo presents a much anticipated second volume of ‘É Soul Cultura’, curated by the charismatic Manchester based DJ Luke Una. In May 2022, ‘É Soul Cultura’ Vol.1 seemed to land at exactly the right moment. Post-lockdown, optimism was back on the rise and the dance floors swelled again. For many listeners, Luke Una’s intriguingly woven pattern of new, old, rare and under-discovered music from around the world became the soundtrack to rejuvenated positivity. Piccadilly Records made the release their top compilation of the year, with Rough Trade placing it as their number two. The enthusiasm from the industry was mirrored by record buyers and demonstrated that in the right hands, moving through genres, tempos and decades can make perfect musical sense. It was clear from the get-go that the concept warranted a series, there are many sides to É Soul Cultura and many musical stories to tell. This second volume gives another opportunity for Luke to share his journey of the past four decades of staying up late and getting transcendental whilst listening to holy grail music as the city slept. It follows on from where Vol.1 left off, at times venturing into the deeper, spiritual, soulful, downtempo, experimental aspects of his tastes. From the conscious, street soul fusion gospel of Veronica Mickie's 'Lost Children', to an excursion into Swiss, psych, progressive rock in the form of Pyranha, then onto the classic Indian music-inspired electronic workout of Andi Otto's 'Bangalore Whispers'. Luke hints at his softer side in Avis; a sweet, obscure cover version of Minnie Riperton’s ‘Baby, This Love I Have’, as well as championing local heroes in the shape of Manchester’s Yargo and their driving, obscure, proto-house belter, ‘Marimba’. There’s also Japanese, electronic, slo-mo heaviness from 1979, courtesy of Bach Revolution. House music is integral to the É Soul sound and is represented by Nav Aktah’s deep remix of Mr Scruff, and then there’s Isis ‘In Essense’; a track of such majestic brilliance that it has never left Luke’s record bag. The selection is eclectic, global, and plucked from different times and spaces. In theory, perhaps they shouldn't work together, but there is a mysterious link that makes them gel as a whole. That’s what Luke does best. He creates a sort of musical alchemy, unifying the diverse. This isn’t a compilation focussed purely on the rare, even though many tracks featured do fall into that camp. It is best described by Luke himself, “It’s not about showing off, collector rarity, or ego-strutting, it’s all about telling stories, sharing the music, and making life’s journey mean something. In the end, of course, it’s just a compilation of other people’s music, but hopefully it’s more than that, adding something back to the pot.”

I recommended a band to a friend the other day - Zeal & Ardor, they were one of my top artists on Spotify last year, I really enjoy their music. The lead singer is Swiss with African-American heritage, and I've heard their music described as what might've happened if enslaved African-Americans had turned to Satan instead of Jesus.
My friend listened to a couple songs and told me that he didn't mind it, but he wasn't a big fan of the gutteral screaming and growling, and it honestly took me a moment to remember that black metal is probably a little out there for people that don't listen to heavy metal all the time. Whoops.
(anyway if you like the idea of fusion between black metal and african-american spirituals then you'll love zeal & ardor!)

Best MIDI Keyboards
The discourse surrounding the indispensability of MIDI keyboards in the panorama of music production pivots around pivotal constructs of versatility, adaptability, and tactile engagement. A critical examination of these elements delineates the MIDI keyboard not as a mere accessory but as a fundamental instrument critical for navigating the complex architecture of contemporary music creation.
Versatility is the first beacon illuminating the MIDI keyboard's critical role. In an era where genre fusion and sound innovation are at the forefront of musical evolution, the MIDI keyboard stands as a maestro of metamorphosis. Capable of emulating an encyclopedic array of instruments—from the resonant depths of a cello to the celestial chime of a xylophone—it demolishes the financial and spatial barriers that once constricted producers’ creative realms. This orchestral omnipotence provided by a singular device equips music producers with a sonic Swiss army knife, essential for the eclectic demands of modern music composition.
Adaptability, the MIDI keyboard’s second virtue, offers an intuitive bridge between the analog sensations of musical performance and the digital manipulation of sound. This chameleon-like adaptability ensures that it remains a relevant and indispensable tool amidst the rapidly evolving technology landscape of music production. The ability to assign MIDI controls and map them to specific functions within Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) transforms the keyboard into an extension of the producer’s intent, allowing for a more fluid and immersive creation process.
Finally, the element of tactile engagement underscores the MIDI keyboard’s criticality. The physical interaction with keys and controls engages muscle memory and instinct in the music creation process, nurturing a more intimate and intuitive relationship with the digital composition. This tactility is paramount in preserving the human essence within music, bridging the gap between digital precision and emotional expression, ensuring that productions resonate with the listener on a deeper level.
In summation, the MIDI keyboard’s virtues of versatility, adaptability, and tactile engagement render it an indispensable instrument in the music production milieu. It is a linchpin in the modern producer’s toolkit, integral for crafting the nuanced, complex, and resonant compositions that define the contemporary musical landscape.

When Brainiacs Meet Brush Strokes: The Absurdly Awesome Fusion of Science, Art, and Edutainment!
Hey Anyguy, strap in! We're about to embark... oops, I mean launch into a universe where Newton's apple gets painted in neon, Einstein's hair is a TikTok sensation, and Shakespeare's quill is a laser pen. Yes, welcome to the wacky world where science, education, and art throw a party, and everyone's invited - even you, Bob, with your "I-only-read-instructions" face!
Picture this: a scientist in a lab coat, splattered with paint, holding a test tube that bubbles with the essence of pure, unadulterated fun. That's the spirit we're diving... ahem, plunging into. It's like mixing Mentos in Diet Coke but for your brain - explosive and messy, yet so satisfying!
First off, let's talk about those brainy boffins turning classrooms into a circus of learning. You remember that time when your physics teacher tried to explain quantum mechanics, and everyone just dozed off? Well, imagine if he had used interpretive dance instead, twirling around to demonstrate particles in superposition. That's right, Anyguy, we're talking about education getting a Hollywood makeover! Studies show that when learners are engaged through creative means, like artsy science experiments or mathemagical illusions, their understanding skyrockets – it's like feeding your brain a gourmet meal instead of bland oatmeal.
Moving on, let's waltz... I mean, moonwalk into the art studio, where creativity meets the rigor of scientific method. Artists these days aren't just splashing paint; they're coding algorithms to create fractal masterpieces, designing sculptures that double as solar panels, and making music that can literally cool down the planet - talk about a chill playlist, eh? These artsy Einsteins are showing us that the beauty of art isn't just in its appearance, but in its ability to solve real-world problems. It's like if Picasso and Tesla had a baby, and that baby was a climate activist with a paintbrush!
But wait, there's more! Ever heard of the term 'sciart'? No, it's not a typo, Bob, it's a thing. Sciart is where scientists become artists, and artists become scientists. We're seeing DNA sequences turned into graphic designs (talk about wearing your genes on your sleeve), and chemical reactions creating colors that even the rainbow would envy. This fusion is like a culinary experiment where chocolate meets chili – unexpectedly awesome!
Now, let's zoom out and look at society. We're in a world that's like a teenager's bedroom – a bit of a mess. But here's where our superhero trio steps in. By combining science, education, and art, we're not just learning about the world; we're learning how
to change it. It's like having a Swiss Army knife for society's problems. Need to inspire environmental action? Bam! Here's a virtual reality game that shows you the effects of climate change. Want to tackle mental health? Pow! Have some therapeutic art sessions backed by neuroscience. It's like having a Mary Poppins' bag of solutions – you never know what you'll pull out, but it's always what you need.
Speaking of needs, let's not forget about our dear friend, the internet. In this digital playground, science, education, and art are like the popular kids at school. They're everywhere – from YouTube videos explaining the science of cooking (hello, molecular gastronomy!) to Instagram accounts showcasing the sexiest bacteria you've ever seen (who knew microbes could be so photogenic?). It's a smorgasbord of information, served with a side of memes and cat videos, because why not?
And in this era of info-overload, where fake news spreads faster than a wildfire in a drought, our trio becomes the superhero team we've been waiting for. They teach us to question, to ponder, and to not just accept the 'facts' as they are served. It's like having your own personal detective kit, but instead of solving crimes, you're unraveling the mysteries of the universe – or just figuring out why your toaster keeps burning your bread.
Now, let's circle back (not literally, Bob, put down that compass) to our imaginary friend, Anyguy. Anyguy represents all of us – curious, a bit confused, but always up for an adventure. Through the lens of science, art, and education, Anyguy learns to see the world not just as it is, but as it could be. It's like putting on a pair of magic glasses that reveal hidden patterns, connections, and possibilities.
In conclusion (because even this whirlwind needs to land sometime), the fusion of science, education, and art isn't just beneficial; it's essential. It's like peanut butter and jelly – good on their own, but together, they create something magical. It's a recipe for a society that's more informed, more creative, and more equipped to tackle the challenges ahead. So, let's mix, blend, and fuse these elements together, and watch as the world transforms into a place where learning is fun, art is enlightening, and science is, well, downright cool.
And remember, Anyguy, in the words of a famous space ranger, "To infinity and beyond!" Or, in our case, to the infinite possibilities of what we can achieve when we let our brains and our brushes work together. Now, let's go paint that test tube neon!

Kolkata to Switzerland: A Cultural Exchange of Food, Music, and Traditions
From the bustling streets of Kolkata to the serene valleys of Switzerland, the cultural exchange between these two places is a feast for all senses. The fusion of food, music, and traditions creates an intriguing blend that can only be experienced through first-hand interaction. In this blog post, we will take you on a journey across borders as we explore how Kolkata and Switzerland are bridging gaps and celebrating diversity in their unique ways. Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of culinary delights, soul-stirring melodies, and captivating customs!
Tumblr media
Introduction: The Journey from Kolkata to Switzerland
When most people think of Switzerland, they conjure up images of snow-capped mountains, pristine lakes, and picturesque villages. But what many don’t know is that this Central European country has a surprisingly diverse culture, with influences from all over the world. This is especially true when it comes to food, music, and traditions.
I had the opportunity to experience this firsthand when I moved from Kolkata, India to Switzerland for a cultural exchange program. It was an eye-opening experience in many ways, and I was able to learn about a completely different way of life. One of the things that struck me the most was the food. In India, we are used to spicy dishes with lots of flavor. But in Switzerland, the food is much more subtle and often features local ingredients like cheese and potatoes.
Of course, there are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy Indian food in Switzerland. There are numerous restaurants that serve Indian cuisine, and you can even find some supermarkets that sell Indian spices and other ingredients. But it’s not just the food that’s different between these two countries; the music and traditions are also quite distinct.
In India, music is an integral part of daily life. You can hear it everywhere you go, from Bollywood movies to street vendors selling their wares. Swiss culture is very different in this regard; music is not as ubiquitous here as it is in India. But that doesn
Exploring the Food Culture of Switzerland
Switzerland is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It has a population of about 8 million people and is known for its neutrality, scenery, and chocolate. The Swiss are also proud of their culinary heritage, which includes cheese, wine, and smoked meats.
The Swiss love their cheese and there are over 450 different kinds produced in the country. Some of the most popular include Emmental, Gruyere, and Swiss Raclette. Cheese fondue is a national dish and is typically made with Emmental and Gruyere cheeses. It is served with bread or potatoes for dipping.
Smoked meats are another specialty in Switzerland. The most common type is Cervelat, a salami made from pork, beef, or veal that is smoked and then air-dried. Other popular smoked meats include bacon, ham, and sausage.
Switzerland is home to many vineyards and produces both red and white wines. The most common grape varieties grown in Switzerland are Chasselas, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling. Swiss wine is typically dry with moderate acidity levels.
The Swiss take great pride in their food culture and tradition of quality ingredients and cooking methods. They are passionate about their food and believe that it should be enjoyed with family and friends.
Exploring Music and Traditions in Switzerland
When it comes to music and traditions, Switzerland is a melting pot of sorts. With influences from all over Europe, as well as its own unique Swiss traditions, there is a lot to explore when it comes to the music and culture of this Alpine country.
One of the most popular Swiss traditions is yodeling. This form of singing dates back centuries and was originally used as a way for shepherds to communicate with each other across the valleys. Nowadays, yodeling is still popular in Switzerland, especially in the mountainous regions, and is often performed at folk festivals and other events.
If you're interested in exploring Swiss music, then you should definitely check out some of the traditional Swiss folk songs. These songs are often quite catchy and upbeat, making them perfect for dancing along to. Many of these songs are about love, nature, and home, which makes them very relatable and enjoyable to listen to.
Of course, no discussion of Swiss music would be complete without mentioning the world-famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach spent several years living in Switzerland and his time here had a significant impact on his music. In fact, some of his most famous works were written while he was living in Switzerland, such as his Mass in B minor.
So whether you're interested in yodeling, folk songs, or classical music, there's plenty to discover when it comes to the musical traditions of Switzerland.
Experiencing the Swiss Alps
When it comes to experiencing the Swiss Alps, there is no shortage of options. From hiking and biking to skiing and snowboarding, there is something for everyone. And with so many breathtaking views, it's no wonder the Swiss Alps are one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
No matter how you choose to experience the Swiss Alps, one thing is for sure - you won't be disappointed. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip today!
Shopping, Sightseeing and Outdoor Activities in Switzerland
Switzerland is a renowned shopping destination, especially for luxury goods. Designer brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes all have flagship stores in Geneva and Zurich. Yalla Miku - s/t LP on Bongo Joe
Yalla Miku’s frenetic and uplifting debut album is a genre twister, with musicians from North and East Africa coming together with various musical alchemists from Geneva’s burgeoning and experimentally minded, global music scene. It’s a thrilling mix of Moroccan gnawa, haunting guembri melodies and krar riffs with shoots of house and electronica and krautrock grooves and ultimately a testament to the community led, punk approach that many creatives from the Bongo Joe Record label, and beyond, adhere to. With its sparkling buildings and luxury boutiques, Geneva is a place that exudes wealth. As the host of some of the world’s most powerful financial institutions, the Swiss city is celebrated for its multiculturalism — mostly the “multiculturalism" of English-speaking expats, of the rich and privately educated. But just beneath this polished exterior lies Geneva’s true soul, one that pulsates in the city’s historical squats, in its North African eateries, and in the venues where artists, musicians, and activists meet. This is the Geneva both fostered and uncovered by Bongo Joe through their label, record store, and café, a community-oriented and welcoming space overlooking the River Rhône Yalla Miku perfectly encapsulates this ideal and translate it into a borderless, syncretic sound. Yeterian (banjo, electric guitar, voice) and Cyril Cyril bandmate Cyril Bondi (drums and voice) founded the group with the idea of bringing together the different facets of Geneva’s music scene, so they teamed up with post-disco electro pop duo Hyperculte, composed of Simone Aubert of Tout Bleu and Massicot (on synths, guitar, and vocals) and Orchester Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp founder Vincent Bertholet (on bass and vocals), and invited three immigrant musicians they had gotten to know through their events at the Bongo Joe store and cafè: Moroccan guembri player Anouar Baouna, Eritrean krar player Samuel Ades and Algerian darbouka player Ali Bouchaki. The idea however was not to follow the tired and sometimes clichèd ways of “fusion” music by appropriating non-Western styles and collaborating with foreign artists to create a seamlessly blended sound. Quite the opposite: Yalla Miku honor this meeting of cultures by specifically drawing attention to those points of contrast between different traditions, voices, and instruments, creating a lively, polyphonic conversation that gives each musician the freedom to improvise and tell their own story. The Western-born musicians composed the base for each track, and the three non-Western artists built on it through the prism of their own musical heritage. “It was a difficult challenge for them to try and understand and adapt to this music, and in a way it’s like a metaphor for the difficulties they had in their life while settling in Europe” explains Yeterian. Borrowing as much from gnawa and Eritrean folklore as it does from krautrock and electro-trance, Yalla Miku’s militant debut album dissolves sonic borders and imagines a world without geographical ones, where people are free to move without peril. Simone Aubert: Synthétiseurs, Guitare, Voix Anouar Baouna: Guembri, Karkabou, Loutar, Voix Cyril Bondi: Batterie, Voix Samuel Ades: Krar, Voix Vincent Bertholet: Basse Electrique, Voix Ali Boushaki: Darbouka, Bendir, Voix Cyril Yeterian: Banjo, Guitare Electrique, Voix

PRIYA RAGU
A Sri Lankan-Swiss singer I recently discovered who incorporates her Tamil roots within both her fashion and music. Priya is an amazing example of how the fusion between South East Asian and Western worlds can not only produce an authentic uniqueness in style, but also is capable of entering a mainstream platform for all to see.
