Hawai’i calls The Banana Splits back, if but out of sentiment (part two)
(With apologies to Webley “Webb” Edwards [1902-1977] and his long-running Hawai’ian music radio programme Hawai’i Calls [1935-1975] as much as Hanna-Barbera)
The morning after: Following the Continental breakfast offered by the hotel, one of the porters handed Fleegle, de facto leader of the Banana Splits, a message by parties unknown directing them to “meet us by Duke at 10.”
“So who exactly is the ‘Duke’ referred to in this message?” was how Drooper queried things, with the manager explaining that such referred to the statue of “Duke” Kahanamoku at Waikiki Beach, one of modern surfing’s more revered figures by virtue of his introducing that ancient and most revered of Polynesian water sports through exhibitions at Huntington Beach in 1911 (introducing surfing to America) and Freshwater Beach, Sydney, in 1915 (likewise to Australia)--which seems ironic considering that Christian missionaries from the United States, inter alii, tried to suppress surfing in the Hawai’an Islands during the 1820′s and 1830′s because of the “immodesty” inherent (as in the boardriders going naked, which was looked on as one with Sin, never mind that the nakedness was largely out of comfort as much as custom).
At any rate, strolling down Kalakaua Avenue, basically Waikiki’s “main street,” from their hotel, Our Bhoys managed to get surprised looks from surfers and other beach goers headed out to a day’s pleasure on Waikiki, aloha print or no aloha print--and maybe one or two autograph/selfie requests--towards the Duke Kahanamoku statue, bound to see its share of leis draped around his neck (with only the statue of King Kamehamela in front of ‘Iolani Palace getting more) as a show of affectation. And once The Duke’s statue was reached, even as the Kalakaua Avenue traffic was going along at a good clip--
“Hello, boys!!”
It turned out being no less than Mildew Wolf, one with Peter Potamus’ Travelling SCUBA Par-tay, delivering such with trademark snarkiness.
“So you’re The Banana Splits, huh--Bingo, Drooper, Fleegle and Snorky?”
The which Snorky responded rather affirmatively, as confirmed by Drooper so interpreting.
Which had Bingo asking “Why would you want us to meet you beside a statue of a surfing legend like ‘Duke’ Kahanamoku when you happen to be part of a diving troupe?”
“I can see the aloha print is rather flattering,” Mildew observed, never mind that Mildew’s style was more Crazy Shirts, which begat the cheesy T-shirt phenomenon on Waikiki in 1962. (In Mildew’s case, his shirt drew inspiration from Native Hawai’ian lore.)
“So let me guess,” Fleegle enquireth, “what you have in mind--you want us to take up the diving experience, I assume?”
“However did you guess?” After a short pause, Mildew Wolf remarked “Follow uncle,” and led them to a side street about halfway towards Ala Wai Creek, whereupon they were directed to a campy-looking rebuild of a Volkswagen minibus whose entrance door featured the “Diver Down” flag prominently; not long afterward, same would be opened by--
“PETER POTAMUS?!” exclaimed the Splits in sheer disbelief.”
“None other than!” would be the reply, even if Peter’s trademark safari jacket and pith helmet seemed borderline suspicious in the tropical heat.
“So why choose us exactly, Peter?” was how Drooper parsed the question. “And how exactly did you know we were spending a few days here, to begin with?”
“Dumb luck” was all Peter could gather. At any rate, all got into the minibus and set off ... which began with a short excursion to the USS Arizona Memorial at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, paying solemn respect and tribute to such sailors as were killed in the shock Japanese attack on the naval station on December 7, 1941, forcing America’s hand into World War II. It may have felt a little solemn for a prelude to what was going to be a rather interesting day ahead.
Because after this rather solemn tribute, it was doubling back on the H1 freeway through Honolulu eastward towards “the Blue Hole” otherwise known as Hanamua Bay State Underwater Park, particularly popular with snorkellers and SCUBA divers because of the rather lush coral reefs to be had offshore as well as the legendary dropoff. Following some awfully impressive snorkelling there, Peter felt it worthwhile to try another interesting dive spot off Makapu’u Point on the southeast fringe of the island of O’ahu, reachable by way of a dive pontoon Peter and Mildew were able to hire over in Waimānalo Beach by way of the local dive shop, itself right on the main highway ... and with some help of some crew from said dive shop, Peter and Mildew were able to coax the Splits into SCUBA gear for a SCUBA lesson which turned out being exceptionally memorable. As in memorable for the flatulence discharged underwater, especially considering the inexperience that Our Bhoys had with SCUBA while trying to stay focused on the view underwater.
“At any rate,” Peter was quick to explain, “such gas passing as you had underwater is not exactly your fault, to begin with. Divers are bound to pass a lot of gas underwater anyway ... Shall we try again, hoping not to get too focused on the likely breaking of wind?” You can guess how that dive turned out, especially when you had unlikely dive instructors and coaches like Peter Potamus and Mildew Wolf “on the spot” in Hawai’i and pointing out some rather beautiful bits of reef, with monk seals and dolphins joining in on the swim ... followed by the magnum opus of any dive with Peter known as the Underwater Hippo Hug on the ocean bottom (which, for some reason, Bingo couldn’t help but feel all the more wonderful about).
*************
“Boys,” Peter Potamus was quick to explain after wrapping up the dive session, “I’ve decided to lay on a surprise for all of you this evening!” (This as the sun was starting to go down, which, considering the latitudes at which Hawai’i is situated, is bound to be rather sudden, not to mention a rather roundabout drive along O’ahu’s eastern shore.)
It was just past the Valley of the Temples, south of Kahalu’u, that Peter explained what was about to go down for the Splits: Nothing less than a night in a hula hut which Peter knew about, on a remote side road which mainstream maps chose not to include, complete with the old-school luau of roasted spit pig and other typically Hawai’ian delicacies as included Japanese noodles and Korean kimchi guaranteed to go all night. Not to mention keeping alive the old, eroticised style of hula which was driven underground thanks to missionary and trader influence because of perceived “sinful” associations.
Admittedly, the Splits took some time to get acquainted with that rather starchy Hawai’an appetiser poi, which Drooper was quick to compare with eating a mix of flour, water and library paste as if having to explain to Snorky that he shouldn’t use his trunk to consume poi wasn’t awful enough ... and to imagine a rather impressive mix of spit-roasted pork, hula in the “natural” style and a view looking out upon a moonlit Kāne’ohe Bay with the tide coming in coming together for a night as worthy of remembrance as the diving earlier in the day!
(Oh, and did I mention their being invited to sleep with the girls of that noble establishment, to be followed practically at sunrise by some uniquely Hawai’ian skinny dipping--including some unlikely pre-dawn time underwater?)
Look, then, for more interesting escapades with The Banana Splits in Hawai’i next week in this space!

How a surfing revolution is riding the wave in India
Murthy Meghavan is a former fisherman who is now a surfing instructor at Covelong Beach in Kovalam, a coastal village 40km from the southern Indian city of Chennai.
He had been riding the waves before he even knew it was an actual sport but had never aspired to surf professionally. As a child, he used an old wooden plank that had washed ashore, once a part of someone’s door, as a makeshift surfboard.
In 2007, a 20-minute chat with Jack Hebner, hailed by locals as the “surfing swami” for his passion for yoga, Hinduism and surfing, changed Meghavan’s life.
In 2004, Hebner had established India’s first surfing school, the Mantra Surf Club in Mangaluru. Fascinated by Hebner’s carbon-fibre board, Meghavan mustered up enough courage to ask him if he could borrow it.
“When I went surfing with it, it felt like I was floating on a cloud,” 47-year-old Meghavan, who now runs his own surfing school at Kovalam, told Al Jazeera.
Many of the students he teaches are children of fisherfolk from low-income families.
Sekar Pachai, 29, is another fisherman-turned-professional-surfer from the same village who has won several championships at home and abroad.
When Pachai first began surfing, corporate sponsors made it possible for him to turn pro, he says, adding that it is very difficult for someone from an underprivileged background to make it as a competitive surfer without support.
Despite the country’s 7,000km of coastline, not all beaches provide the ideal conditions to surf
Finding a decent surfboard is often the first obstacle. A foam or fibreglass board for beginners can cost between $150 and $1,000. A professional board can cost upwards of $1,500.
Even if you could afford it, surfboards were stocked in India’s sporting goods stores only in the last five years. Prior to this, a good board was more likely to find its way via foreigners.
In 2003, an Australian surfer gifted a battered board to a child in Meghavan’s village.
When Meghavan realised the kid did not care for it much, Meghavan paid him 1,500 Indian rupees ($31.4 at the time) to buy it from him. But he did not have an ankle leash so he used his fishing rope which alarmingly wound itself around his neck whenever he fell.
President of the Surfing Federation of India (SFI), Arun Vasu, feels regular financial support for the sport would help carve its future trajectory in India as it is funded by private donors and corporate sponsors only.
Despite the country’s 7,000km (4,350 miles) of coastline, not all beaches provide the ideal conditions to surf. The lack of sponsorship also affect surfers in restricting travel for training under different wave conditions.
“To be on par with a global surfing community, Indians need training in all-wave conditions and to travel in the global surfing circuit,” said Vasu. “Without adequate funding, this won’t happen.”
Even within the country, travel expenses can mount.
Surfers must practise in the few beaches where encountering bigger waves is possible – Mahabalipuram and Kovalam in Tamil Nadu, Varkala in Kerala, Mulki and Gokarna in Karnataka, coastal Pondicherry and Goa.
These waves are seasonal – between May and September – and even during the peak season, these beaches do not offer as wild a wave as you can encounter in Playa Grande in Costa Rica, Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, Bell’s Beach in Australia, Uluwatu in Bali, or Huntington Beach in California.
The surfing community in India is small and tends to be spread out over the country.
Very few women – the SFI estimates their number is at eight to 10 across the country – have taken up the sport
Surfing festivals are held in Kovalam, Mangaluru and Orissa, drawing attention to the sport, attracting sponsors and helping professional surfers meet and compare notes.
India has an estimated 40 surfing schools. Vasu estimates that there are only 100 to 120 professional surfers. The others are enthusiasts who love the waters, take occasional lessons and who enjoy surfing for leisure.
Srikanth Dhanashekar, 16, is a son of a fisherman in Kovalam.
His day starts at 7am with a gruelling training schedule that lasts four hours. But he does not mind the aches and pains.
“Surfing gives me such joy,” said Dhanashekar. “I feel one with the sky and the sea. I can’t imagine my day without it and my dream is to represent India in the Olympics someday.”
While diverse athletes from fishing communities are finding their footing in the sport, there is one area in which it continues to lack representation: gender.
Very few women – the SFI estimates their number is at eight to 10 across the country – have taken up the sport.
Even those who do surf confront many difficulties and prejudices head on.
Ishita Malaviya, 32, began surfing in 2007, becoming the first professional female surfer in the country.
Ishita Malaviya, India’s first female professional surfer
When she started competing, her goal was to represent women at events. While still in college, she and a friend would surf on weekends, boarding a bus at 5am, lugging an eight-foot second-hand surfboard to the beach in Manipal, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.
“The board took up the combined backrest of eight seats on the bus. People would have to lean on it while sitting,” said Malaviya.
Curious and amused, other passengers would ask her questions about surfing, so at least it sparked conversations.
Sinchana Gowda, 20, crossed over to surfing from professional swimming and has been winning national awards since the age of 13.
But intrusive questions about the way she dresses when surfing in a wetsuit or shorts have been much harder for her, she says.

— oomna (@oomnawhodares) October 24, 2017
Suhasini Damian, 29, from Auroville in Pondicherry, is a national award-winning surfer coached by her husband, a surf instructor who shaped her red and pink board for her, customising it to her body weight for easy manoeuvrability.
Strangers have walked up to her to tell her that if she spends too much time in the sun, her skin would tan beyond recognition.
She has never felt comfortable surfing alone because she has had to contend with drunken men, lewd comments, catcalls and whistles.
India’s lack of a beach culture meant that female surfers were often singled out, says Malaviya.
But she hopes that will change as more women discover the joys of surfing.
“I’ve found my surfing family but I’m still striving for a surfing sisterhood,” said Malaviya.
The family Malaviya refers to are fishermen and their children, who, in 2012, helped her and a business partner set up a surfing club near Udipi, Karnataka, transforming a dilapidated abandoned home into a warm, inviting resort.
“Surfing dissolved all our barriers as they welcomed us – strangers – into their community. It reminds me of how in front of a mighty ocean, we are all equals.”
India’s lack of a beach culture meant that female surfers were often singled out, said Malaviya

Credit to @clintcov : This is 50... Six months ago I could barely swim 50 yards and deep water terrified me. Weekly swimming lessons with a great coach boosted my swimming endurance from 600 yards to now 1,500. For my 50th I wanted to experience a first — an open water swim. I was sick and the water at Huntington Beach was unseasonably cold. The wetsuit fit perfectly and kept my core warm. For 10 minutes I swam through ocean surf and felt calm and in control. I still have a long way to go in swimming development but this was a huge step. Thanks @newwaveswimbuoy for the extra security and visibility. posted on Instagram - https://newaveswim.com/2R06JNQ

TUNE IN – EXPLORE – RESTORE Amidst a breathtaking scenery, Obonjan regenerates body, mind and soul. Reward yourself with the unique experience of music, yoga, meditation, fitness and sport.
This is just one of the many promises on Obonjan’s website. Marketing, SocialMedia, pictures, program – everything is superbly done – innovative, fresh, glossy, lifestyle-ish.
An adult glamping version of a festival away from the Springbreak Party Islands in Croatia with an extraordinary program of yoga, lectures, workshops, sport and music.
Sounds great – that’s what we wanted to see.
Obonjan is a 1.5 km long island on the Dalmatian coast, about 6 km before Šibenik. Originally conceived as an “island of youth” for boy scouts, the island is very beautiful and really serves all clichés of the Adriatic: turquoise-blue water, pine and olive trees, beaches and the obligatory background sound system for cicadas. With a small ferryboat you can reach the island about one hour from Šibenik harbour. In the 1950s, the scouts left behind a complete infrastructure of ports, houses and streets. All beautifully ingrown and a little wild. In 2016 the island was renovated by a Croatian/English event agency, partly rebuilt and put back into operation.
On the island there are tents for about 500 guests, divided into two categories. The tents are new and of high quality, equipped with AirCon and in the category “Forest Lodge” even with refrigerator, toilet and shower. For the tents of the “Bell Tent” category there are sanitary facilities available as on a camping site. All the public buildings we saw were in order, some of them new or renovated and clean.
Obonjan offers two restaurants and three food stalls (pizza, burgers, curry) for catering. In the big restaurant “The Kitchen” on the highest point of the island there is a breakfast buffet and a large seawater pool. The small restaurant “BOK” at the harbour opens at noon and serves mainly seafood. And then there is a small “Green Bar” which offers tea, smoothies and allegedly veggie / veganes food, but during our one-week visit the bar was mostly empty.
At the harbour there is a bar all day long which is played by DJs in the afternoon and in the evening. At events, parties or concerts there are more bars at the amphitheatre and at the open-air club. Then there is the “Zen-Den”, a wellness, massage and yoga temple and a pavilion for all kinds of events.
The seasonal programme is dedicated and of high quality. Every week a label, publisher, promoter, agency or other organisation takes care of the work. The curator brings together bands, DJs, performers, artists, trainers, coaches, etc. and brings the associated followers to the island. An interesting concept that reads itself thrillingly and holds many surprises and discoveries ready.
Here is an overview of the 2017 programme
[toggler title=”Curators” ] Gilles Peterson and Worldwide FM, Wanderlust, Electric Elephant, The Numinous, Late Night Tales, Hunger, The Hoxton, Unit 44, Supersoul, Fashion Revolution, Visual Fodder, Wildfitness, R&S Records , Ernest Journal, Secret Yoga Club, Gottwood, SHE, Phonica, She’s Lost Control, Soul & Surf, Creative Social, Refinery, Switch On, Serenebook, East of Eden, Yogarise, Your Space Berlin, and Yoga Hero.[/toggler]

And after a short acclimatization period you can get really busy. Here’s a typical Obonjan day.
[column size=one_quarter position=first ]07:30 am – 10:30 – 14:30 17:00 19:30 – -[/column]
[column size=two_quarter position=second ]Early Morning Yoga Breakfast Mediation – Session Lunchtime Beach Life, swim and/or swim and / or hang out at the harbour Readings, workshops, coachings, etc. on the tent veranda enjoy the view and sip the first glass of wine Sunset Yoga Dinner In the evening a concert, a party or a film on big screen?[/column][column size=three_quarter position=third ][/column][column size=three_quarter position=last ][/column]
Great! An Eco-Hipster-Art-Professional-Chiller-Paradise.
But on closer inspection we were really disturbed by some points, which we don’t want to share here as an offending online review and experience report, but as a call to guests, media and organizers.
If you look at the Obonjan SocialMedia and website and read through the programme, you will get the impression of a committed, sustainable, organic & eco-resort. Unfortunately, this is not the reality.
Disposable dishes, plastic cups, plastic cutlery, plastic straws, coffee to go paper cups even at the breakfast buffet. Not a single solar panel all over the island, no grey water recycling, no waste separation, delivery vans and cars on the island are normal petrol, no call to recycle or any other recognisable spirit for a sustainable island life. And the air-conditioning systems in the tents are not really necessary either.
The team, the employees on Obonjan seem to be recruited partly from unpaid volunteers, who are mostly gastro beginners and also by the bank only minimal-friendly. But the organisation worked out well for us – but good mood feels different.
Vegetarian or even vegan dishes are scarce. In the restaurants and stalls there are hardly any meatless or vegan options (or the veggie paddies at the Burger Grill or the summer rolls at the Green Bar are just randomly off…). If you are not into meat, fish and cheese, you should bring enough food from the mainland, otherwise it could get cramped. Anyway – Basically the food was good to OK everywhere.
At some bars, menus and drinks disappear inexplicably and drinks seem to be charged according to a kind of daily rate; especially the later the evening, the more volatile the prices can become. And watch out for the Beer/Lemonade Mix Shandy – then you will soon have two drinks on your bill: a small beer and a lemonade = 2 x 36 kuna / 9,80 € – without tip: -) Tricky is the payment even if you haven’t brought enough kuna. But it gets complicated when you pay in € and get Kuna change back. Then it becomes expensive and here too there are different, suboptimal exchange rates.
In the little shop with limited, completely commercial offer and prices like at the bar there is a ban on photos. On demand: why? … there’s the answer “Because my boss said so.” Which, by the way, is something you get more often as a curious guest.
The prices are not cheap all over the island.
Beer 0,3l = 35 Kuna / 4,70 € Beer 0,5l = 52 Kuna / 7 € Corona 48 Kuna / 6,50 € Cuba Libre 85 Kuna / 11,50 € Burger 65 Kuna / 8,80 € Pizza 85 Kuna / 11,50 € Curry 90 Kuna / 12 € Breakfast buffet 100 Kuna / 13,50 € Small Water 20 Kuna / 2,70 €
But hey – it’s an island and not the mainland, every can of beer is brought by ship.
All this is not dramatic and doesn’t deserve a rip-off stamp.
The somewhat „Mediterranean“ gastronomy practise has to be taken sporty and nobody can be really good and friendly all the time. But the impression transported by the Obonjan communication of an Eco Village, which is operated only by yogis, gurus, hedonists, vegans and mindful eco guerrillas, we see then nevertheless as genuine label fraud.
The people we met in Obonjan were just as amazed and disappointed about all the mentioned non-ecological points. Obonjan manages to bring a great, open, interesting and mixed audience to the island and then disappoints on the spot with small and big failures, which leave a more than bland aftertaste. Obonjan could be so much more.
Obonjan could be a lighthouse for the entire tourism industry of the Adriatic Sea. The advertising for this has already been placed, and the appropriate guests have already arrived.
“The spirits I called…”
Many of the Obonjan visitors we spoke to agreed that there will be a lot of feedback when you bring such an environmentally conscious target group to the island and then do not fulfill expectations. The pressure on the organizers must be big. The complaints, concerns and comments must take on alarming proportions. All curators have to be asked whether they will continue to support this or demand changes.
You can’t have a wellness / ecological festival, throwing around with disposable dishes and hardly offering veggie food without an echo of the guests?
Actually we are Obonjan fans. But just disappointed Obonjan fans. As a real eco island, the 2018 season might be fully booked already – think about it.
The Obonjan project is a respectable feat of strength, the organisation, the infrastructure, the booking, all this is not stomped out of the ground in one season. We realize that. In the second year the shop seems to be running a little more smoothly, but in many areas there is still room to move upwards.
We could imagine going back to Obonjan again. But next time we’ll ask what has changed. And whether the eco awareness yoga meditation marketing show has perhaps even become a reality by now. We wish the whole Obonjan team much success for the third and many more years.
Go-bonjan! www.obonjan-island.com
Tips for the Obonjan trip: Bring: Eye mask (the tents are bright), Ohropax (the tent walls are thin: -). Food/Beverage: a bottle of wine, a few beers, some snacks and a couple of water bottles are allowed and useful. Of course, the organizers also have to earn money, but you can also bring along what you consume in the tent. Enough Kuna: the exchange rates on the island can become crazy. Except in the two restaurants, cash is used everywhere. There is an ATM on the island, but we didn’t try it. Internet / W-Lan: There are top free wifi almost everywhere on the island. Water: The tab water is drinkable. Children: Obonjan is not really meant for families / children. Guests: The promoters come from the UK, so most of the guests are british but we’ve met people from all over the world. Arrival with your own car / parking lot in Sibenik: We drove with our own car from Munich to Sibenik and after 8 hours of driving we stayed for one night in Hotel Jure **** / Solaris Beach Resort (170 € double room incl. breakfast). The resort has a large, guarded parking lot and we have parked the car there for a week (7 € / day) Taxi / Bus: From the resort there is a bus for 17 Kuna p. P. to Sibenik. With Uber the trip from Sibenik Harbour to the hotel costs 45 kuna, taxis in the city wanted three times as much for the same trip – they just haven’t heard the gong and keep trying to advantage from tourists.

This limited-edition knit features a 1980s Coach advert on the front.
Okay, so it's not real leather—but can you tell?
You're looking at the next Zara Instagram success story.
Because the back of a top is just (if not more) important.
Nothing screams "book a holiday to Ibiza" quite like them.
Mango are giving Zara some competition in the tweed jacket stakes.
These are due to arrive any minute—we are patiently waiting.
They're the hoops every influencer has or wants to have.
These are no ordinary sneakers.
Pretty certain you will be popular when wearing this.
We definitely just found the bag you'll wear every day for the foreseeable future.
It's the one accessory that truly updates everything you own.
This season's prettiest florals are made cool with black ribbon straps.
Can you keep this affordable shoe brand a secret, please?
Sun's out, legs out.
This beauty of a bikini is sold in two parts, so be sure to get the matching Bikini Briefs (£17) into your basket.
Still can't get over how expensive this looks.
From the coolest brand of the moment comes the coolest skater-girl jeans.
The original black Mango corset sold out fast—expect the same for this new-in creation.
The most universally flattering dress you'll find for £30.
Taking it back to the 1980s, with a little less shoulder padding.
These "invisible" sandals are a leg-lengthening dream.
A major talking point for any given outfit.
We're falling hard and fast for Bally's retro-cool accessories.
Another gingham skirt to add to our collection…
Allow us to introduce your most perfect summer dress.
Meet the beach-to-city tote we've been praying for.
The dream indulgence for spring.
The wait is over—this dress is back in stock.
For extra mileage, wear this bathing suit with jeans on the weekend.
A little bit Dolly Parton, and we like it.
It's like carrying your holiday memories around with you.
So by now you know the Chloé It bag, but did you realise matching earrings existed?
Spring jackets don't get cooler than this.
Of course Mango, Zara et al. are all maxing out on gingham right now.
We were checking out COS's 10-year anniversary collection but got sidetracked but this stunner of a onesie.
The affordable designer favourite has returned in fresh colourways.
Yes, the matching tropical briefs (£38) are essential.
Swap out your black handbag for this denim number.
You could lie and say this is a rare 1970s treat you found in a thrift store.
The chicest thing you'll find for your feet on the high street.
The cutest thing we've seen in 2017 thus far.
We have two editors in the office already set to get this for a summer wedding.
No joke, we know girls using these cosmetics pouches as sweet mini handbags.
Forget jewellery, this is our number one accessory for the season ahead.
Mark our words, this Mango creation will be all over Instagram come summertime.
Bohemian sandals that work with every outfit.
Another ruffled winner from trusty Marks.
Just when you thought you weren't a sneaker kind of girl…
Damn you, Zara, for making us buy more every week.
Possibly the coolest twist on a trench we've seen.
It's too cute. We can't handle it.
Even better than silver? Icy blue.
The one-shoulder is this year's off-the-shoulder.
If you thought you liked your 501s…
These in-built corset tops are flying out of Mango and Zara.
Pearls? Tick. Ribbon? Tick. There's a lot to love about this statement piece.
You could literally style this 365 days of the year, which works out at £2.70 per wear. Cost effective, we think.
Like choosing to move around town in pyjamas, only chicer.
These were the surprise hit of summer 2016, and now they're back with crystals instead of studs. Sound the alarm.
A heartfelt thank you to the clever person who designed this wear-to-every-occasion-and-feel-super-slim jumpsuit.
This Style.com exclusive capsule collection of reinvented classic Sonia Rykiel knits is all kinds of perfect.
All the Chloé bag oomph, without the mega price tag.
Like a walking work of art.
This is straight out of an old-school Hollywood scene.
Trend-driven? Tick. Flattering? Tick. Inexpensive? Tick.
The affordable designer handbag brand that our editor is currently obsessed with.
At first, we were just going to buy the culottes, but it's insane to get them without the matching tunic (which can also be worn as a short dress).
Don't mind if we do.
The twisted gingham shirt is high up on our spring shopping list.
The most spring-ready thing a girl could own.
The best earrings on the high street, hands down.
All. Summer. Long.
Even if you aren't a denim jacket girl, you can appreciate this.
Please don't wear these beauties in the rain.
You can get 365 days of wear out of this.
Finally, an inexpensive trench that genuinely keeps you dry.
Do you even need persuading into this one?
From work to Glastonbury to the beach, this wonder jumper does it all.
These tick off two major trends: embellished toes and kitten heels.
For alternative brides and partygoers alike.
We actually cannot believe these are from the high street.
You're looking at a bona fide It bag of 2017.
Don't delay: These keep selling out.
Hello, best dressed wedding guest.
So fun they'll prompt you to book in a few parties…
A complete and utter steal.
Like the whole of summer sewn into a pair of excellent trousers.
Sometimes you just have to snap up the perfect slip dress.
The checked blazer trend has taken over the globe.
Did you get the mad bag memo?
Olivia Culpo (and lots of girls we know) just snaffled this one.
These will win out at every formal event to come.
When we're not obsessing over Topshop's silver boots, we're thinking about this.
It's the black hem that makes these feel unique.
Hot-new-label alert.
What are you waiting for? Seriously. Get moving.
A winter-to-spring winner right here.
They're back, and this time they're grey. Chic.
Every fashion girl under the sun is obsessed with Attico.
Because it's payday, and we heart Prada.
Dark-wash denim and hem detailing? Now these are a real steal.
If you're a Balenciaga fan, you'll appreciate why we put these in.
Here's our high-street go-to when we don't want the same thing as everyone else.
Work. Beach. Wedding. Party. Winter. Summer. This skirt does it all.
Is this the most awesome Miu Miu bag ever created?
A slightly looser fit can be tempting when it comes to the vinyl trouser trend.
So. Much. Bang. For. Your. Buck.
This looks way beyond its tempting price tag.
You have been warned: This keeps selling out.
The one thing everyone is buying at Who What Wear HQ: A checked blazer.
Everyone else has this in black, so why not stand out from the crowd?
Self-Portrait makes trousers that are just as good as its dresses.
Bonus points for being both warm and making a statement.
Loafer love alert.
Next up, our edit of the best autumn/winter 2018 fashion trends.

What to do in Huntington Beach
Huntington Beach can be found around Orange County in Southern California. It's known for its expansively long beaches, white sands and excellent surfing waves due to the land's orientation with the ocean current. Among all the qualities Huntington beach has, it's waves are top-notch, giving Orange County the nickname, "Surf City."
There are a lot of things you can do around Huntington Beach. So much that you may need to book a place for more than a week to enjoy them. So, what are the things you can do in Surf City?
youtube
Huntington Dog Beach Hangouts
Located on Pacific Coast Highway, between the ends of the 9th street and 7th street is the famous Dog Beach. It's basically an area where beachgoers with their canine buddies go to enjoy. It's perfect for people with dogs or people who love to go people and animal watching.
Clustered here are all manner of small shops made for both man and dog, with is good in case you want to give your buddy a treat but you forgot it in the house. However, this is not a place to go if you want to enjoy a nice quiet time on the beach. This is an active, fun place for dogs, where they are allowed to go unleashed, play in the sand, and establish connections with others of their kind. Expect what you'd normally expect in areas with lots of dogs. If you're bringing your dog, always pick up after them, and it's generally advised not to go barefoot in the sand.
They are open from 6 AM to 10 PM, open every day, even during holidays.
youtube
Huntington Beach State Park Activities
There are other beaches along the long coastline, but this one is among the most popular among the denizens of Orange County. This is where you can go to do every recreation you can do along the shore. The sands are perfect for making firepits, the waves are tame enough yet vigorous enough that you’ll really feel the seashore experience. From here you can watch the surfers ride the waves this beach is famous for, and be among them.
It's located at 21601 Pacific Coast Highway, which opens and closes at 9 AM to 5 PM respectively. Expect a lot of people closer to the weekend and during holidays.
youtube
Whale Watching Tours
It’s one thing to see them in media, another to see them in real. There are several kinds of whale watching tours available, from those that pick you up from select hotels and drive around the beaches for that perfect spot, to boat tours that get you in the closest watching distance. Seeing them breach from the water and slam back to the ocean is simply awe-inspiring.
The tours also include a visit to the museums, where you can get snippets and tastes of Orange County’s rich history. The pit stops between the trips land you to Main Street, where you can enjoy the many restaurants that line the sidewalks. Some of them have seafood so fresh, they were caught just this morning.
youtube
Surfing the Gnarly Waves
This isn't called Surf City just because of a song. The waves break at the beach and the bottom of it is forgiving sand, making it ideal for beginners. You don't have to swim that far from the shore to get rideable waves, making it both safer and efficient.
One thing to note is that the waves break pretty quickly, but at least wiping out closer to the shallow sands is better.
If you are interested in learning how to surf, there are multiple surfing schools all around Huntington Beach. They are easy to spot, as you would see aspiring surfers train on the beach with their coaches.

Lakers Take a New Direction with Magic’s Return
With a focus on economics and political science, Nita Charlton-Gomes graduated from the University of California, Irvine, and now serves as the owner of HB Business Consulting Services & Solutions in Huntington Beach, California. In addition to her interests in swimming and traveling, Nita Charlton-Gomes enjoys following her favorite basketball team, the Los Angeles Lakers. As the team embarks on a new era of restructuring, LA Lakers president Jeanie Buss recently announced the installment of past Laker great Earvin “Magic” Johnson as the new president of basketball operations. Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss have been relieved as general manager and executive vice president of basketball operations, respectively. The organization is actively searching to fill the vacant general manager position and expects to make a selection in the near future. Besides the aforementioned changes, the Lakers' chief operating officer Tim Harris has begun a search to replace past vice president of public relations John Black. The franchise’s executive management, including Ms. Buss, have expressed high expectations for the Lakers and believe team president Johnson, head coach Luke Walton, and the soon-to-be-named general manager are the beginning of the team’s successful future.
