🍁 Does the Drowned have any regrets?

She did at first. She had days after Sylvester was murdered where she broke down. Killing all the people she did left her raw, breaking her down even more, but revenge hit harder than regret and she pretty much brainwashed herself into thinking it was necessary and that she was doing everyone a favor by massacring any and all metahumans.

She was a genuinely good person once, but grief twisted her into something evil. Kind of like the Punisher, only in that she butchers everyone, and not just the evil guys.

The sea....the only home left for her. She took in a deep breath, humming with pleasure the scent of brine and kelp. She had changed herself to fight in the sea....now the sea was all that was left for her, even in this alternate universe.

The Drowned's eyes narrowed as she saw someone else there. Who'd be that stupid enough to come that close to her, anyyways...

He was serious. He was going to go after the Robin King and the Batman Who Laughs. Julian seemed to her either the bravest man in the multiverse.....or a genius turned fool. Maybe a bit of both was true.....

“ You’re braver than I’d ever be. But be careful.....just because there’s a Batman Who Laughs, doesn’t mean there isn’t a Batwoman Who Laughs. Plus who knows what favors he has with the literal embodiment of the multiverse itself.

I can’t stop you......I don’t want to. But if you need help.....you have an ally in me and the others who refuse to go along with the BWL’s plans....”

As a Wayne AND a variant of the Bat....to admit fear was rare. While she, like her ‘brothers’, started their careers using terror to set examples, to outwardly admit they felt terror in any capacity was a weakness.

For anyone to elicit a reaction like that.....it meant they were far worse than even the sinister Batman Who Laughs.

“ All I know is is that he was a Bruce Wayne born bad. So bad.....he destroyed his own reality. And the Batman Who Laughs offered other realities to him to do what he saw fit.

He’s....a monster. I’m a monster, the others are monsters....but I became what I am to avenge my Sylvester. This one.....he was born evil.”

She shook her head at his plan.

“ They’re too smart. They’ll know. I don’t.....I wish I knew how they knew. But....they know. It’s as if they know all outcomes before it happens.....or they can see all scenarios at once.

They’ll know you’re a spy....and they’ll use your intellect against you...”

Her hope had drowned long ago......but maybe she could salvage it. Though she was cautious.......any number of things that could happen had a tendency of coming to life at the worst possible times imaginable.

“ There are others who.....feel the same as I do. But some of them are far darker than I am.....their evil more pervasive.

I know they carry more pain in them than any sane human alive should ever be forced to live with....some may be saved....”

But her voice grew wary.

“ But there are two that will stop at nothing.......the Batman Who Laughs.....and the Robin King.”

He was in a lot of pain, but he would be okay....once he was able to regenerate. It was a miracle he was even able to keep standing. The huge zombie began coughing, his lungs spasming visibly from the huge hole in his chest.

Dark blood coming out.....a sign that he needed to get home. NOW.

Thankfully home for him wasn’t too far away from here....though it would still be a bit of a walk. But slowly and surely, he’d make it to the swamp. The best place for him to regenerate grievous wounds would always be the pool he was born in.

It was like returning to the womb for him.....the swamp and his mother absorbing him into her once more to heal, before he was born again. All this time, the Drowned back in her lair, licking her wounds as she fumed over the loss of her trident.

To lose was one thing...to be BESTED by an ANIMAL like THAT?! Her rage was boiling at that point. She’d get her trident back.....even if it meant destroying the entire coast....and with that.....all of Slaughter Swamp.

She had just met him.....but already she felt a kindred spirit. Despite her rage, her hatred......ultimately all she ever wanted was justice. Justice that never came for her Sylvester. Maybe Julian wanted justice too....justice for himself and those harmed because of his past......

If he could find the capacity for heroism....maybe she could be a hero again too one day.

Hearing his exploits.....it reminded her of what she had done. She had drowned a planet, executed whole species.....because they took the one person she loved from her.

“ I drowned my world in sorrow. Had.....had it not been for the prime Earth stopping me and my brothers.....I would have drowned that Earth too.

Maybe.....maybe there is capacity for heroism in both of us.....because we regret what we have done.”

Similar, yet different. Same concept yet very different expressions and designs....while the Nega version of Julian seemed to her to operate on the concept of ‘method to madness’.....the Batman Who Laughs played the role of the ‘madness to method.’

Taking the predictable Batman.....and making him unpredictable. While all according to plan...

“ That’s the difference between the Negative and this version of Batman.....one is order, the other chaos. Yet somehow the Batman Who Laughs has infinite plans.....it’s like he’s a pair of dice rolled that determine the fate of anyone near him. No two things he does are the same....

If you try to think like him to understand him.....he’ll turn you into a pawn. He’s done it to the bravest heroes......and all he says is that it’s just something fun to kill time....”

She wished she could fully embrace the ‘badguys always lose’ line.....ironic since most would consider HER the bad guy.....

“ I want to believe it.....everyone else in the Dark Knights does. But what he lacks n physical strength.....he makes up in worse ways......

I know you want to do good by ridding pure evil.....but is it worth potentially risking your own life doing so?”

The waters boiled and churned as the fight intensified under dark waters. She slashed at him, he bit down on her arm and nearly severed the limb. Her screams erupted out in bubbles as he dragged her deeper.

It didn’t matter that she could breathe underwater......she hurt him. She hurt his home, his friends. He would eat her alive piece by piece, relishing her pain like she had relished inflicting it on all those people.

The Drowned felt true fear as she stared into glowing eyes and a massive toothy grin......she had to escape! She had to flee! Her trident in her hand, she managed to maneuver enough to slam the blade into Grundy’s chest.

The zombie screamed, erupting out bubbles as dark red mixed with brighter crimson. It was enough of a distraction for her to rip her trident out, and attempt to swim away.

But not before Grundy managed to sink his teeth into her ribs.....and crush a section of her torso. She barely managed to make it to the surface, her organs brutally damaged and her bones broken like twigs.

Her healing factor would fix them.....but it would take days. Maybe weeks....

The Drowned only noticed Grace smirking when it was too late. She narrowed her one eye, asking her in a snarky tone...

“What are you smirking about-”

She didn’t get the chance to finish her sentence as Grundy breached the waves with a horrific howl. Eyes wide and creepy, like a shark’s, teeth perfectly designed to rip and tear into even the toughest meat....

Grundy's size had doubled, and so did his rage. The Drowned leaped, only for the zombie to snap onto her leg with his deadly teeth.

Grundy fell back into the sea with a massive splash, dragging her back into the deep with him.
