That leftover bunch of bananas (not shown) on the tabletop is getting mushier by the minute, sprouting brown/black spots with age. Rather than dumping them into the bin, sis made Banana Bread with them. Don’t ask me why it is called bread when it tasted just like cake, albeit a coarser cake. I know I told you that I don’t eat fresh banana but this bread I can accept. Love the crusty and caramelised edge on both sides of the loaf.

An 80-year-old Ukrainian woman bakes Paska for her grandchildren.
Paska is traditional Ukrainian sweet Easter bread.
The tradition exists in many parts of Central Eastern Europe, but each type of bread is slightly different.

Happy Xmas Eve Eve!
I just now finished baking!
6 loaves of my gram’s sweet bread to deliver to neighbors/friends.
4 types of cookies
2 candies
Tomorrow, I take the boy grocery shopping and then start the savory items. After we open gifts Xmas morning, I’m not doing anything else but watching movies and eating the spoils of my toils!
Here’s a look see at the baked goods:

First photo: Saint Peter sabre from Sant Pere de Ribes (photo by Xurei), all made of coca (Catalan brioche or sweet bread) perfumed with anise and topped with glaced sugar. Second photo and bottom row: Saint Simon sabre from Mataró (photos by festes.org and Gastroteca), where the coca is filled with marzipan and topped with glaced sugar or candied fruit.
Some Catalan towns that have Saint Simon (October 28th) or Saint Peter (January 25th) as their patron saints have the tradition of eating a brioche in the shape of a saber sword on the day of the patron saint.
In Sant Pere de Ribes, it's unknown how old the tradition is. As far as everyone knows, it's always been done. Nowadays the sabres are sold by bakers, but generations ago they were made in each home. Saint Peter is often represented with a sword because in one of his most famous stories he cut off a man's ear trying to stop Jesus' arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane.
As for Mataró, we have more information. Back in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period, when it was common for Mediterranean coastal towns and cities to get sacked by pirates, the people of Mataró prayed to Saint Simon to protect them. In the 1700s, the Mataró fishermen's guild started making this brioche on the day of Saint Simon to represent the saint fighting to protect the town.

A colleague who recently retired recommended this Red Bean Bread (S$3.50) from Wataa Bakery. This halal-certified confectionery is a franchise brand of homegrown Swee Heng Bakery. This fluffy yellow bread has a spiral of sweetened red beans embedded in the dough and sesame seeds on the outside. The bread is good on its own if not a wee bit sweet due to the sweetened beans.

Sixx was a huge help! She decorated the gingerbread cookies, and then baked the Anise Italian Wedding (b&w) cookies while I showered. She forgot to roll them smooth before baking but like I told her, they’ll taste the same! And the ones there in the middle. Bought those. Dansk does a fine job with butter cookies, why reinvent the wheel?!
I’ll let the decorations on the Xmas Bread dry and then re-wrap them in clean wrap. Then they’re ready for delivery tomorrow!
All I have to do now is the Chocolate Trifle for Xmas Dessert.

cinnamon-raisin bread (coiled like a babka, krantz, povitica, or cozonac as the dough was just a bit too long for the tin) 🍞
