the freak in the penthouse part 12
E-rated (for sexual content), accidental millionaire eddie/sex-worker steve. On tumblr: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3.1 Part 3.2 Part 4.1 Part 4.2 Part 5.1 Part 5.2 Part 6.1 Part 6.2 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11 or search #thefreakinthepenthouse :)
On AO3 FYI, I’ve basically imagined that Dustin and Suzie are roughly the same age as the others in this, so in their late teens and early twenties…
Chapter 12: reality check
Five Days later
Steve picked up the phone and dialled Eddie’s number. It rang twice, before the answerphone stabbed him with the same old jack-knife in the gut:
“Hi! This is Suzie.”
“And this is Dustin.”
“We’re not around right now—
“—or we’re having our downtime, together or apart, which is super important to us—”
Jesus Christ, kill me already.
Steve had heard this message a dozen times. Dustin and Suzie sounded so goddamn chirpy, like they were going to explode into song. And Steve had endured waaaaay too many chirpy songs the last few nights, courtesy of Robin’s mom’s cassette deck.
He endured the rest of their nail-scapingly annoying message and braced himself for the Ding!
“Hi, this is Steve. Again. Look, I really need to talk to Ed—”
“Answerphone tape full,” recited an electronic voice, the polar-opposite of chirpy.
“Fuck!” Steve slammed down the receiver.
Why wasn’t Eddie returning his calls?
Okay, Steve had been sleeping a ton the past few days, might’ve missed something. Robin’s leave was over today, and her mom worked really long shifts…
A muffled meeeeow had him looking up sharpish. Resident cat, Fernando, glared at him through the window.
“All right, I’m sorry I stole your couch. I don’t hate you, it’s your fur that hates me. Way to go making me feel even shittier about it.”
He glared back. Trouble was, this was Fernando’s home, not his. Robin had technically moved out last year, and he’d barely got a nickel to slot into the housekeeping kitty.
He was gonna have to sell his watch. Or the guitar. Dammit, he’d wanted to check in with Eddie first, but what choice did he have?
He leafed through the telephone directory for music stores, scraped together some loose change, and caught a bus across the city. On the journey, he missed his old Sony Walkman as never before. Thanks to Robin’s mom, ‘Mamma Mia’ by Abba ear-wormed through his brain. Uuuuuuurgh! He  hugged the glittery guitar case tightly and attempted to pep himself up.
Eddie said he was crazy about Steve. Steve sure as heck felt the same.
“Yes, I’ve been broken-hearted, blue since the day we parted. Why, why did I ever let you go?”
“Shut the hell up, Agnetha,” he muttered, earning himself a scathing glance from a woman sitting close. But Steve hadn’t been broken-hearted when he left the hotel. He’d been scared shitless over that fact he was losing his memory as well as his mind. He still was. His future with Eddie had been the one thing he’d felt faintly optimistic about, and…
“Look at me now, will I ever learn?”
No. No way. Eddie was a good person. Yeah, Robin had passed hours bad-mouthing him. No matter. Steve believed in Eddie. Well, he desperately wanted to. He was getting really worried about him—about whether he’d really been ‘cured’ of his agoraphobia, and about his overly sass-tastic and curiously absent friends.
He missed him so much. Christ, it hurt.
In ‘Jivin’ Jams,’ Steve laid the guitar case on the counter and opened it. The store-owner’s brows shot sky high: “Where did you get this, son?”
“A friend gave it me,” said Steve. “There was a rumor it once belonged to Jimi Hendrix or something.”
The guy stared at him, mega-intense, which Steve took to be a positive sign. Maybe he should play hardball, get competing offers from a bunch of stores.
“I’m looking for at least two-thousand bucks,” he ventured.
“I got some catalogues out back that should help me figure out what it’s worth. Gimme a tick.”
Steve shrugged. “Sure.”
The dude vanished. Steve waited, grinning when a track he knew—‘Friday I’m in love,” by The Cure—drowned out the Abba hell-loop in his head. He remembered this one. Yeah, he’d been flat on his back on that honking great bed, with his ankles looped around Eddie’s neck. While merrily fucking Steve, Eddie had sung along like an idiot:
“Monday, you can hold your head, Tuesday, Wednesday, stay in bed, Or Thursday, watch the walls instead, It's Friday, I'm in love…”
Christ, he missed Eddie’s dumbass ‘o’ face. He missed how Eddie always needed him to come too, loving it when Steve squirted across those lick-tastic tatts. Yeah, he missed… so much. If he got a decent amount for the guitar, maybe he and Eddie could rent a place together. Get back to fucking every day of the week…
He was still daydreaming, smirking vaguely, when the two policemen walked in.
“I didn’t know it was stolen!” protested Steve. The son-of-a-bitch store-owner handed the guitar over the counter to one of the cops.
“Where d’you get it then?” asked the other.
“A friend gave it to me.” Steve’s legs started to feel wibbly.
“This friend got a name?”
Steve bit hard into his bottom lip.
“You think on it, and tell us when we get to the precinct, huh?”
They took his knapsack and turned out his pockets. When the handcuffs came out, the bubble of panic in his windpipe ballooned.
“I didn’t know it was stolen,” he repeated, sort of on autopilot. They cuffed him anyway. Outside the store, the cool air smarted against his burning skin. “C-crap. No, please! Look… I… I didn’t know!”
He was guided into the back of their patrol vehicle and the door slammed shut. He shut his eyes, rested his head back, and battled his instinct to struggle against the cuffs.
OH MY GOD, EDDIE! YOU REALLY WERE TAKEN FOR A CHUMP!
Unless he knew it was stolen? No. No way, no way. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. Okay… breathe. Keep calm, right? Shiiiiit!
Steve had been picked up by the police once before. It’d been soon after he’d run from that man, when he was on the streets, and… Nope, nope, NOPE.
His mind grew as clammed up as his body. Which was probably how, breathing fast and shallow, he survived the short journey to the precinct. Still kinda dazed, he was uncuffed and processed. His rescue inhaler, which had been in his pack, was handed back to him. For the first time in a while, he managed to form a coherent sentence: “I need to make a phone call.”
As he was shown to the booth, his worries swerved off in a whole new direction. Dammit, he still didn’t know Robin’s number. He could try calling the hotel, see if he could get a message to her, but…
His unsteady fingers dialled the one number that’d etched itself into his heart. He knew it was gonna go to that ‘answerphone full’ message.
Shit, you are not gonna cry, Harrington, or you’re gonna be eaten alive.
“Hello, this is Suzie.”
“Oh Jesus Christ!”
“No, I’m afraid I’m not Him. This is Suzie Henderson. To whom am I speaking?”
“It’s Steve.” He swiped his knuckles across his cheekbones. “I’m, uh… um… Eddie’s friend. Is he there?”
“No, we don’t know where he is. We’re really worried.” She sure sounded less chirpy than in her message. “I thought Dusty tried to call you back. Have you heard from Eddie?”
“N-no, no. Oh my God. Oh my God, this isn’t happening, this isn’t happening.”
“You seem distressed, Steve. Can I help?”
What choice did he have? He poured out his story, including how Eddie gave him the guitar he was accused of fencing, right till the call randomly cut off.
In the interview room, a tired-looking cop dumped a worryingly thick file between them.
“It’s a simple question, kid. Tell us how you came into possession of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar, and we can cut you a deal. You sing sweet enough, you could skip all charges.”
Steve chewed his thumbnail, stared at the table: “I got it from a friend.”
“Listen to me. That guitar was stolen during an armed robbery at a house in Brentwood. You already got an arrest record. You don’t talk, you’re looking at some serious time behind bars.”
Steve gawked up at the interviewer, his thumb still half-caught in his mouth. He’d go to the prison for the guy he loved but…
This isn’t happening.
“Whoever you’re covering for, are they worth it? You scared they’re gonna come for you? We can put you in witness protection.”
Scared? Of Eddie? It was almost hilarious, and finally snapped Steve from his clammed-up funk. He giggled nervously.
“You think this is funny, kid? You can laugh your ass off in jail. You wanna recall your friend’s name for me now?”
“I… um…”
Eddie would want you to tell him, you idiot! He can probably help clear this mess up! There is also the teensy weensy possibility he’s skipped town, leaving you holding his seriously problematic baby…
“Look, I’m not exactly sure where he—“
The door flew wide and a young woman with fashionably frizzy hair and some serious shoulder-pad action stepped in. “Stop the interview. My name’s Nancy Wheeler. I’m Steve’s lawyer and I need a moment alone with my client.”
The interviewer looked mildly pissed then picked up his files and shuffled out.
Steve slumped back in his seat and blinked at his apparent saviour. Beneath the make-up and the power suit, she didn’t look much older than he was. She smiled tightly, pulled a chair around and sat down beside him.
“Woah, woah, woah.” Steve finally found his voice. “I don’t wanna sound ungrateful, but I can’t pay you anything."
“I’m not actually a lawyer,” she hissed, kinda apologetic. “I’m a trainee journalist. Friend of Suzie’s. She’s sort of into law as a hobby, and she’s clued me in on exactly what to say, so… sit tight, keep quiet. We’ll have you out of here in no time.”
Nancy did a lot of talking, and Steve eventually found himself leaving the precinct flanked by Nancy and Suzie. Suzie had brought her checkbook to pay Steve’s bail, though in the end, he hadn’t been charged.
He’d lost track of time during his ordeal, and it was past ten pm and dark outside. Before they reached the bottom of the precinct steps, a Volvo drew up, and its internal light switched on. A guy with curly hair and a ‘Vecna’s Doom Quest’ baseball cap wound down the window.
“Get in!” he yelled.
“Love you too, Dusty-bun.” Suzie headed around to the front passenger seat.
Steve hesitated. “Uh, look, I appreciate the cavalry charge and all, but you’re, like, complete strangers.”
“Get in, Dingus!” Robin had rolled down the backseat window.
“What the heck are you doing here?” He climbed in, and she folded him into a clumsy hug. Nancy climbed in on his other side.
“Are you okay?” asked Robin.
“Jesus, what do you think? I got arrested, and.. I’m so confused.”
Robin launched her story, as Dustin drove off. When she’d discovered Steve AWOL, she’d freaked out. Then she’d called Dustin’s number, which she knew Steve had been trying all week. While garbling madly at each other, she’d learned from Dustin about Steve’s arrest. Dustin, meanwhile, gleaned that Robin had heard from co-workers that day about an incident at the hotel.
The same incident that Dustin, Suzie and Nancy had spent the last few days trying to get to the bottom of.
“What happened at the hotel?” asked Steve.
“We’re not entirely sure,” said Nancy. Steve wasn’t sure why they'd gotten a rookie journalist in tow. So much baffled him right now. “What we do know is that the police have charged Eddie with assault and battery. His disappearing act doesn’t exactly help his case.”
“What? No way!” Steve couldn’t buy it. Eddie was one of the gentlest guys he’d ever known. Okay, there was that one time he busted his own knuckles, but…
"It's a pretty serious business," Robin was saying. "The only witness was Doreen. She swore that the so-called 'victim’”— Robin spluttered the word out like sour milk—“was blind drunk and walked into a pillar, but the police didn't buy it.”
“We’ve got to find Eddie before the cops do,” chipped in Dustin.
“Yeah, well, LAPD are the least of Eddie’s troubles,” snapped Robin. “I’m gonna gut him over this whole guitar business.”
Too fucking much.
After the rollercoaster of the past few hours, Steve felt basically punch-drunk. He groaned, rubbed his brow, then shaded his eyes from the dazzle of the streetlights. “Please just someone tell me you’ve got a clue where Eddie is.”
“It’s a work in progress,” said Suzie. “He never picked up his ride from the hotel. We’ve exhausted our leads locally, so we’re heading up to Oregon to see his uncle. Wayne won’t talk over the phone—”
“He won’t talk to us, period,” interjected Dustin. “But I think he knows something.”
“We’re going to Oregon?” Steve emerged from beneath his fingers. “Now? The cops told me to not leave town.”
“Dustin said he’d drop us home first,” said Robin. “I’d be delighted to wash my hands of Jon Bon Jovi’s evil stoner cousin for good.”
“He’s not evil.” Steve gave an enormous yawn, then zoned in on the one thing he knew for sure. “I need to find him. You go home, Robin. Fernando will scratch my eyes out if I spend another night on his couch.”
She bitched a bit more, including about how yuck and sweaty he was. Then she refused to leave him. He curled up against her—he couldn’t risk drooling on a complete stranger—and hunkered down for the long drive.

Great Guitarists 100 - Mick Ronson, Joe Perry, Steve Jones, Mick Jones, Paul Weller, and Andy Gill [CROSSBEAT (November 2009)]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mick Ronson What is the sound of glam rock? In a nutshell, it's the sound of Mick Ronson's glossy guitar. From 1970 to 1973, Mick Ronson was David Bowie's right-hand man and the guitarist who defined the sound of the glam rock era. His best-known work from the glam period is Bowie's 1973 album "Aladdin Sane". The sound of glam's golden era can be fully appreciated, including the guitar sighing in "The Prettiest Star". His independent 1974 solo work features songs that show Bowie's influence. He remained in intermittent contact with Bowie and Ian Hunter until his death in 1993. However, I think his best work as a rock guitarist is the 1971 Bowie song "The Man Who Sold the World". Listening to the dynamic performance of 'The Width of a Circle', you realise that he had plenty of potential to become a hard rock guitar hero. -Hirose Tohru
Representative albums "The Man Who Sold The World" (1971, photo) David Bowie "Aladdin Sane" (1973)
Joe Perry Besides Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix, Joe Perry's biggest influence was Peter Green, the guitarist of the early blues-tinged Fleetwood Mac. His cover of "Stop Messin' Round" is a favourite, sung by Joe himself and performed live without fail, and is included in the covers collection "Honkin' on Bobo". He mainly uses a Gibson Les Paul, but also plays chords and solos on a six-string bass as well as a regular guitar, and his weighty sound can be heard on two of Aerosmith's best-known albums of the 1970s, "Rocks" and "Draw the Line". The figure of him singing with Steven Tyler on stage with one microphone is reminiscent of Mick & Keith of the Rolling Stones, and countless artists, such as Slash of Guns N' Roses, admire his cool guitarist image. -Ikuyo Kotani
Representative albums "Rocks" (1976, photo) Aerosmith "Draw the Line" (1977)
Steve Jones Steve Jones is the guitarist of the Sex Pistols, a band synonymous with 70s punk. His most famous work is, of course, his debut album, "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols". At the time of its release, he was playing the guitar behind the bellowing Johnny Rotten, and that's exactly what he did. At the time of its release, the only impression it gave was that of a punk band with a bad-ass vigour, but 30 years later, on the live reunion album "Filthy Lucre Live", the band sounded extremely decent! However, if you look back after the Pistols broke up, they played on many albums, including The Professionals with Paul Cook, Suzy & The Banshees and Bob Dylan. The 30-year gap in the sound of "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols" may be proof of his struggle to find a place in the world before the Pistols, when he liked Iggy Pop, David Bowie and others and stole their equipment, while being torn between the rise and fall of punk and the rock music that followed. -Ikuyo Kotani
Representative albums "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols" (1977, photo) The Sex Pistols "Filthy Lucre Live" (1996)
Mick Jones Mick Jones used to be a big fan of Mott the Hoople, to the extent that he even followed them around. The guitar that made his mark on the world was that jangly, crisp guitar. The Clash's "London Calling" was a milestone in punk, but it also showed many different directions, including reggae and rockabilly. It is a must-hear along with "Combat Rock", which later spawned big hits such as "Rock the Casbah". The band's versatile sound, while also defining punk guitar cool, earned them a spot on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 25 most underrated guitarists in history. Since the Clash, he has been involved in various bands and projects, including Big Audio Dynamite, but in recent years he has been more active as a producer, for example with the Libertines. It is no wonder that he is close friends with the members of Hard-Fi. -Ikuyo Kotani
Representative albums "London Calling" (1979, photo) The Clash "Combat Rock" (1982)
Paul Weller During his time with The Jam, Paul Weller was far more highly regarded as a vocalist and songwriter than as a guitarist. It is well known that after the Style Council, which greatly expanded his musical range, his presence as a guitarist increased alongside this. Originally, his guitar playing was more of a backing for songs, focusing on chord cutting and rhythm riffs, and he was not a technically gifted guitarist by any means. He has actively played guitar solos since going solo, but when listening to his playing, I feel the influence of Neil Young, with whom he has also featured on cover songs. The common denominator is his clumsiness, which becomes a passionate emotion and erupts in his tasteful, bad-guitar playing, and his hot, rough guitar charm is even more powerful in his spontaneous playing live. -Yoshihiro Hoshina
Representative Albums "All Mod Cons" (1978, photo) The Jam "Catch-Flame!" (2006) Paul Weller
Andy Gill Gang of Four from Leeds were one of the first post-punk bands to be enthusiastically re-appraised in the 1990s and 2000s. The band's first impression in the early days was Andy Gill's incisive cutting. His clean, cutting-only playing on tracks such as 'Damaged Goods' inspired later alternative acts. It is also symbolic that in later years Gill produced work for the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Jesus Lizard. Although the general reputation of the band is concentrated on their first two albums, their later works, which replaced the band members and had a more funk-tinged sound, were also revisited in the 2000s. Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Rakes, who participated in the 2005 revival album "Return The Gift", were the first of the bands to inherit Gill's chappiness and dry funk feel. Gill's shadow can be clearly seen in the arrangements of Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. -Masatoshi Arano

Pictured: Les Paul (left) and Dick Dale (right)
Top 10 guitarists by genre: Instrumentalists The country-tinged (1/ Les Paul) is an exception to the rule, and the influence of the guitar he developed, as well as his playing style, is enormous. The founder of garage (2/ Link Wray), known for "Rumble" (also covered by Guitar Wolf), inspired Pete Townshend and many other guitarists. The Shadows' bespectacled man (3/ Hank Marvin), who used tremolo arms extensively to produce a clear sound, was Britain's first guitar hero and was admired by Brian May and Ritchie Blackmore. (4/ Allan Holdsworth) and (5/ John McLaughlin), with their superb technique and wealth of musical information, have moved freely between jazz/fusion and rock, influencing everyone from Eddie Van Halen to Vernon Reid and Mike Stern. (6/ Duane Eddy), who helped make the guitar the mainstay of rock 'n' roll in the 1950s, has earned the respect of too many guitarists, including George Harrison. Telecaster user (7/ Steve Cropper), who supported Stax Records as the guitarist of Booker T. & the M.G.'s, also deserves a lot of credit. Kraut-rock stalwart Ash Ra Tempel's (8/ Manuel Göttsching) has continued his experimental guitar adventures as he released 'Inventions For Electric Guitar'. John Frusciante has been playing delicate guitar sounds sprinkled with various effects since the heyday of punk/New Wave, and (9/ Vini Reilly) has been highly acclaimed by John Frusciante. (10/ Dick Dale), familiar to many for "Mirselou", established the surf guitar with a Middle Eastern melody, and impressed even the young Jimi Hendrix. -Shiho Yamashita

For TMI Tuesday, I would like to ask Crowley from Glam Rock who his favorite bands are? :)
Oh shit, this could get controversial XD
(I'm setting it in approx 1974 but that won't be firmed up until I've gotten more written and read through for continuity.)
Obviously Crowley adores Bowie and Marc Bolan. The Stones are always a classic and he'll tell you that they are infinitely better than the Beatles (but you better believe he had a Sgt Pepper phase).
He went to see Tommy multiple times when it was at the cinema.
He sees Suzi Quatro as what the modern parlance would call "life goals or wife goals?" See also: Jimi Hendrix.
He's pretty sure Jim Morrison was a twat but he'd have gotten on his knees for the bastard anyway.
Ana likes to play Sweet in the studio and he's fine with that though he sometimes suspects they stole wardrobe inspo from some of his own early designs.

Be normal. Don't stare at the wall. Stop staring at the wall.
Marlene's eyes fell to the ground as she continued walking.
No, not the floor either. Look straight ahead. That's what people do... right?
Marlene moved her gaze to the others walking around her.
No, you can't stare at people. They'll get insulted. Or think you have a crush on them.
"Right", Marlene nodded.
Mary looked at her in confusion, "What?"
"Nothing!" The reply came quickly.
Good going, now your best friend thinks your crazy. She doesn't. She does.
Mary pulled her hand, "Come on. We've got Charms", she nodded towards the classroom door just beside them.
Marlene swallowed nothing and flicked her eyes from the door to the emptying hallway, "Go ahead. I'll catch up later."
"You'll be late though..." Mary started to say before Marlene took off in a run, leaving Mary yelling after her.
She definitely thinks your crazy now. And you'll get detention. Detention doesn't matter. You're failing every class anyway. But Mary's going to hate you now. She won't. She will.
Marlene ran into the nearest toilets and dropped to the floor by the sink.
You've got class, go to class. You can't go to class, you're having a meltdown. Stop crying, idiot. Go play quidditch. You can't play quidditch, you've got class. When's the next practice? Did you miss it? Fuck, you missed practice. No you didn't, it's this afternoon. Maybe you should go early. Now. Yes now. No not now, you've still got 6 hours. And you're meant to be in Charms. Fuck Charms. Oh Merlin, your head hurts. Why does your head hurt? You're an idiot, that's why. Think of Suzie Quatro, think of The Runaways, think of Jimi Hendrix, think of Led Zeppelin. Strum. You can do it. It's all you can do. Strum. Strum. Strum. Strum. Strum. Strum. Strum. Strum.
"Mckinnon!" Someone touched her arm.
She looked up.
Fuck. It's Meadowes. Meadow? Pretty. Like them. No. Stop. Meadowes is a prick. And now they've seen you crying on the floor. You're never escaping this.
Dorcas sat down on the floor opposite her, "You alright, Mckinnon? What are you doing on the floor?"
"Fuck off."
They snorted, "No."
Marlene glared at them, "What do you mean 'no'? Leave me alone, git."
"No."
"Honestly, Meadowes! I'm not in the mood to get in a fight right now."
"Good, neither am I", Dorcas said, springing up and holding a hand out for Marlene, "I am in the mood to race you round the pitch though."
Marlene took the hand, "I've got class."
You're holding Meadowes' hand. It's warm So warm. Like the sun. Never let go of this hand. You exist just to hold their hand. Hold tight and don't let go.
Dorcas smiled again.
Why do they keep smiling?
"And were you actually going to go to class?"
Marlene didn't speak.
"Exactly." They pulled her up.
At eye level, Marlene watched as Dorcas instinctively lifted their spare hand and wiped a tear away from Marlene's eye.
They stilled after realising what they had done, "Sorry. I didn't mean to do that."
Marlene just squeezed their hand tighter.
And Dorcas smiled again.
Fuck.

Indigenous Rock
Starting with the genre of Rock, there are so many artists you could cover in this genre, and show off their immense talent. I want to start with the band Redbone.
Tumblr media
Redbone is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1969 by brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas. The band is most famously known for their song Come and Get Your Love featured at the beginning of the 2014 smash hit movie, Guardians of the Galaxy. That's not to say they didn't see success in the past, in 1974 they reached the Top 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with their single Come and Get Your Love, thus causing them to be the first Native American band to reach the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. They also had another string of hits with the records "We Were All Wounded At Wounded Knee", "The Witch Queen of New Orleans", "When You Got Trouble", "Wovoka", "Suzi Girl" and "Maggie". Redbone's success set the pathway for other Native American musicians to follow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another big Indigenous rock artist is the late, great Jimi Hendrix. Jimi Hendrix is arguably the most influential rock artist of all time. According to the Smithsonian magazine "Guitarist, singer and songwriter Jimi Hendrix is most known as one of the greatest electric guitarists in the history of rock 'n' roll. What he's not as well known for is his Native American heritage. The musician's grandmother was Cherokee, a heritage Hendrix's family has continued to celebrate."
Tumblr media
Jimi Hendrix often wrote about gender, ethnicity, interculturalism, and the natural environment of the world, and all of those examples, he draws from Indigenous dimensions. The main album that combined all of these ideas is Axis: Bold as Love - The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The song off of this album where all of these ideas come together is Castles Made of Sand.
Tumblr media
Castles Made of Sand is the story of Jimi Hendrix's upbringing. Where commentators Harry Shapiro and Caesar Glebbeek summarize the song as "a sharply observed reflection on life's bitter ironies". They go on to talk about the idea of sand, and how it reflects life; forever fading away, and how nothing can be taken for granted -- love, family, friendship, etc. This idea is central to Native American tribes, all across North America.

Name: Suzanna Louise “Zanna” Hendrix D.O.B: May 4th Age: 21 Species: human (latent psychic) Family: Samuel Hendrix & Renee Dubois-Hendrix (parents), Suzanna Hendrix (paternal grandma), James Hendrix (paternal grandpa), Hugo Dubois (maternal grandpa), Louise Dubois (maternal grandma)
Suzanna Hendrix had a pretty good childhood growing up. She had two artistic parents; a mother who was a painter and a father who was a professional photographer. They both taught her to see the beauty in the world and they always encouraged her to express herself. She got to spend a lot of time with both sets of grandparents, and all four of them loved to spoil her (she was the only girl on her mother’s side and the youngest grandchild on her father’s side).
As Suzie grew up, her parents began fighting more and more. Her mom thought her dad worked too much and wasn’t attentive enough, while her dad thought her mom was too demanding, yet simultaneously flaky–it was true, her mom was late for just about everything. Ultimately they ended up getting a divorce; technically they had joint custody, but Suzie ended up spending most of her time with her dad.
Right before she started high school, Suzie started going by “Zanna”. She maintained the nickname her father had given her was childish and immature, while Zanna sounded cool and mysterious. Along with the name change, came a new haircut, which she would keep for years to come.
Zanna loved art in all forms, but what she was drawn to most was photography, like her dad. She’d grown up helping out in her dad’s studio and loved working with film. When it came time for her to start applying for colleges, all the schools she applied for had strong art programs. She planned on studying photography and design. Zanna was all set to go once she graduated; she’d been accepted into her top choice school, her dad helped her find and move into her first apartment, and she was settled in with a few weeks to go before her first college classes began.
That’s when life as she knew it ended.
A car accident left Zanna permanently blinded. Instead of living in her fabulous little studio apartment and going to art school, Zanna had to move back home and start going to a school for the blind so she could relearn how to do everything and find out how to be as independent as possible. Her dad hovered for the first few weeks after the accident, but then started employing tough love; he always pushed her to do as much for herself as possible, refusing to baby her. It turned out to be the best thing for her, because she ended up adjusting fairly quickly to her new normal. Her dad even went so far as to get her into some sculpting classes so she could still enjoy art in some way, even if she couldn’t see it.
Zanna was blind for less than a year before something else horrible happened. Her dad got pulled into a drug run, playing an unwitting mule when someone asked him to hold a doll for them, and Zanna got dragged in along with him when the crooks came looking for their heroin stuffed inside. They got a bit more than they bargained for; while Zanna was blind, she was far from defenseless. She tricked them, tried to keep them busy for as long as possible until help could arrive, and when the criminals got frustrated with her and attacked, she fought back with everything she had.
Two years and lots of therapy later, Zanna is now a mostly well-adjusted blind woman. She lives on her own now (though her dad still checks in frequently) and makes pottery and smaller sculptures on commission.
