Shooting The Rapids!
Tuesday 18th February 2025 – Suva, Fiji.
Captain Bligh first charted the Fijian Islands when he sailed HMS Bounty through the waters between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu in 1789 and for a time they were called the Bligh Islands.
Tumblr media
Overnight, we made the passage of 99 nautical miles from Lautoka and docked on the other side of Viti Levu in Suva, the capital.
Today, our excursion was something of an adventure, with a Fijian canoe trip up river, with the opportunity to swim at a waterfall!
However, our adventure began with a 1-hour bus journey to Koromakawa, an authentic village on the Navua River where, unlike as promised yesterday, we were greeted by the Chief and his family in the Meeting House.
Tumblr media
Here we observed the famous ‘kava ceremony’, a traditional Fijian welcome. Kava is a local drink distilled from kava root but which has what was described as ‘an acquired taste’! Drunk in sufficient quantities, it has psycho-tropic effects and it can be highly addictive.
Tumblr media
As part of the ceremony, our ‘chief’ (ie a male bus passenger chosen at random) is offered the drink; we just observed!
Then there was the usual ‘folkloric’ singing and some warrior-prancing by some rather fit young guys in grass skirts before a buffet lunch was offered.
Tumblr media
The fact that it was only 10.30am was a bit disconcerting but this was because all the boats were already being used by the first two coach loads!
Tumblr media
Anyway, soon it was our turn and we boarded our ‘authentic’ Fijian river boats for an exhilarating ride up the Navua River, past forested banks and up through a gorge with a number of waterfalls.
Tumblr media
Each boat had a very low freeboard, so they were quite ‘splashy’ and at one point, we had to disembark the boats, so that they could navigate safely past some ‘rapids’ (quite gentle ones really but rapids nonetheless), re-embarking a bit further up.
Tumblr media
After about 45 minutes, we arrived at our destination, which involved a light uphill ‘trek’ up a small tributary with what seemed like impenetrable jungle on either side. Onward we climbed, wondering how much further – and would it be worth it?
Tumblr media
Suddenly, the narrowing gorge opened up to reveal a rick-pool and rather impressive waterfall! Having been promised the ‘opportunity’ to swim here, we had come prepared and I decided to brave it.
Tumblr media
It was quite exhilarating, although standing up on the uneven slippery bottom to get out again was not as easy as it looked! Andrew, meanwhile, kept safety watch from the bank!
The journey back down river was even more exciting than the trip up because this time, we didn’t disembark for the rapids but did a bit of ‘shooting the rapids’ instead – very wetting but I was wet already! Great fun!
Tumblr media
We were really fortunate with the weather today, with temperatures 28-33 degrees and sunny with broken cloud. The guides and boatmen were wonderful, friendly and so intent on us enjoying the experience.
All in all, it was a fantastic experience and an amazing adventure! After such dreadful weather and a disappointing excursion in Lautoka yesterday, I was so glad we were able to see Fiji today in a much better light and leave with the memory of a brilliant day in Fiji!
