Topping out on Mt. Whitney

As we continue our series on PCT traditions, the one right-of-passage virtually all hikers include is the nearly 20-mile side trip from Crabtree Meadows to the top of Mt, Whitney, the highest point in the Continental United States (14,505′).  Although the difficulty of the detour is largely dependent upon weather and snowpack, the journey is far easier than the 8,000′ of elevation gain required of those coming from the east (Lone Pine). Of course, the views are spectacular.

In the summer, it is a rare day when the top is not populated with hikers.  Even for those motivated to reach the top for sunrise, it would be rare to be alone.

One of my personal favorite historical stories in The Pacific Crest Trailside Reader: California volume was based on Orland ‘Bart’ Bartholomew’s mid-winter assault on Mt. Whitney in 1929. He followed the Sierras from south to north relying on rake-handle poles, boot spikes, and custom-made hickory skiis. 

A 1956 article in the Saturday Evening Post reported that “an amazing assortment of people make it to the top . . . History records that one man walked barefoot, another pushed a wheelbarrow, and someone tried to ride a bicycle.  Some climbers bundle up in heavy coats, some wear bathing suits, and some wear nothing at all.  One man went to the top done up in a fashionable business suit with a fedora and a bow tie and carried his blankets and food in a suitcase.”  The truth is, it is a long hike and weather can quickly become life-threatening.  The Smithsonian Institute hut on the top was built after Byrd Surby, a U.S. Fisheries employee, was struck and killed by lightning on the summit in 1904.
